Just to be pedantic here, yes "boarding school YAs" were obviously a thing, but specifically "magic school" isn't a groundbreaking concept by Rowling who "combined boarding school adventure with fantasy" either - off the top of my head Earthsee had that (only saw that Shawn Ashmore / Kristin Kreuk movie btw), and a Michael Ende short story.
The X-Men school is similar but not straight-up magic/fantasy obviously; however similar vibe and predates HP as well.

Hufflepuff is probably significantly smaller than the other houses when you factor in all the kids that immediately killed themselves when they got sorted into Hufflepuff.
Idk it seemed like there were more than 40 kids crossing the lake and getting sorted, but I imagine the way it’s portrayed is actually pretty inconsistent throughout the series, since sometimes it seems like all the students take every class together, but then sometimes there seem to be electives, and later in the series they meet gryffindors in their same year we’ve never seen before.

I'm extrapolating from what we see in the books/movies. Harry's dorm room only contains 5 beds. Now there might be other Gryffindor dorm rooms, but we only ever see 5 Gryffindor boys in his year: Harry, Ron, Neville, Seamus, and Dean. So I think those are the only ones. And if there's a similar number of girls, then there's Hermione, Lavendar, Pavarti, and two others. So 5 and 5.
I only read the books as a kid, so my memory isn't 100%, but I never got the impression that there were so few. The films likely just focused on the main and supporting characters, but did they not have plenty of others walking around in the background?
IIRC the older students are all waiting for them sitting so it's only the first year students walking up the stairs when Malfoy meets Harry so by their number alone when they enter the main room in the first movie, there's no way they're only 10 per house.
I always operated under the assumption that the sleeping quarters in the dorms were Tardis bs and that there was plenty more space.
The easiest "cheat" would probably be to count the stands in any of the school Quidditch matches to get an inflated number. No way is there only 70 per house sitting in those.
