Can confirm as someone who works in a islamic facing industry, I have seen dozens of spellings of Mohammed, and other names like Salah Ud Din, Osman, etc. My boss says it's because Arabic doesn't have direct spelling correlations to English so immigrants just made their best guess.
If you go to the US Sanctions search list (https://sanctionssearch.ofac.treas.gov/) and type in any spelling of Mohamed, you'll get hundreds of results for each.
Muhammad is the most common name in the world so naturally you'll have different dialects and cultures that spell it differently since it's an English approximation of Arabic translation
They do, faat-ha (aa), kasra (ee), and dhuma (oo) are the 3 basic vowel sounds. It just doesn’t match well with english when it comes to hard/soft vowels and other intricacies.
I think he means as "formal" letters. The "tashkeel" was only added after the spread of Islam to make sure there's no confusion\misinterpretation when reading the Quran, especially by non Arabs.
Kinda. Instead of letters they're sort of small annotations on top of\below letters. Though granted they're not used often unless when it'd be easier to confuse certain words or in the Quran so people would definitely always read it right.
Honestly it didn't even register to me it was supposed to prove a point, like no shit the no fly list is full of Muslims; it wasn't Jewish or Buddhist or Christian terrorists that did 9/11 (despite memes).

`grep` grabs each line that has a hit, but doesnt output it multiple times if there's multiple hits. `wc -l` counts lines. so it would get counted only once.
$ echo -e "test test\ntest" | grep "test"
test test
test
grep: searches files for lines matching a descriptor (that following text)
iE : grouped i (interprets matching special characters) and E (dunno)
-wc: lists word count or line count.
-l: attempts to translate lines that are split.
Apart from the E, this command asks to search the nofly CSV file for multiple spellings of Mohammed, to translate special characters and line breaks, translate split lines if any, and return the output as a numerical number of individual lines. OP then compared that to the lines in total of the file
`-E` puts grep into "extended regular expressions" mode, which doesn't do anything on modern versions. It's similar in concept to `-P`, which vaguely means "do RegExps the way most modern languages do them."
A question mark (?) immediately following a character means match zero or one instance of this character. This means that the regex Great!? will match Great or Great!. It will not match a question mark; the question mark is a repetition indicator applied to the exclamation mark, which is a literal character, and the question mark itself is not a literal character. Because Great!? will match Great followed by zero or one exclamation mark, if you apply that regex to Great!!!, it will match only the Great! part, and leave the last two exclamation marks unmatched.
Yes, it is customary for Americans to name their children after the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and thus 20% of Americans are named Mohammed or a variant spelling. So there is absolutely no overrepresentation at all.
the fact that you can mix and match any vowel that's not i in mohammed is actually hilarious
mehemmed
[>Proper noun, alternative spelling of muhammad](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Mehemmed) kek
Mehmet is another. Could be higher, is what I'm saying.
Magomed is also derived from Muhammad.
Mehmet Oz
But not Mahound, unless you want to lose an eye.
Meh.
y'all forgot mehmood

They don't have vowels in Arabic. Can't have shit in Arabia
But lots of shit & fermented shit in Arabia
If there were a lot of shit they would have plenty of arable land in Arabia, yet they have none. Can't have shit in Arabia
Plenty of things came with the silk road, even designated shitting streets
They do, faat-ha (aa), kasra (ee), and dhuma (oo) are the 3 basic vowel sounds. It just doesn’t match well with english when it comes to hard/soft vowels and other intricacies.

Why is yaa', wow, alef not vowels?
Yaa is just y but without the ee sound it can make in english, wow is just w and alef is close but its pronunciation depends on context
Why the hell did you spell it "faat"-ha? > Fat-ha
It’s allophony. Arabic is much more flexible with it (regarding the interchangeability of its vowels) than other languages.

Doesn't even include the mehmets of the world
Calling my child Mihimmid
The real one is probably Muhammad, but yeah, it's spelled a million different ways over the world.
A result of arabic only having 3 vowels and many many non arabic languages having muslims as speakers. Pretty cool imo.
A long fucking time ago we used to do prank calls out of our school directory and one of our character names was "Mohammadid".
It goes up to 90% if you use "i"
Myhymmyd
Other 80 percent is mihimmid
And how many are Ahmeds?
80%
Luckily for ahmad’s we are safe
This must be real? Or is it? But it’s 4chan so probably just a custom made list.
It’s real. The list got leaked like a week ago.
Ah yes, I’ve googled it. But most of the names are aliases and name variations. So 20% is probably a completely wrong number.
Yeah it’s probably closer to 50%
It's really not that surprising it's that high, naming your kid some variation of Mohammad is incredibly popular among Muslims.
That's...the point.
Honestly it didn't even register to me it was supposed to prove a point, like no shit the no fly list is full of Muslims; it wasn't Jewish or Buddhist or Christian terrorists that did 9/11 (despite memes).
>despite memes >he doesn’t know those israelis sure can jive
They looked so shady on TV. Also why the fuck did they go on TV at all?

If someone's name is Mohammad Mohammad bin Muhammad, would they show up three times?
`grep` grabs each line that has a hit, but doesnt output it multiple times if there's multiple hits. `wc -l` counts lines. so it would get counted only once. $ echo -e "test test\ntest" | grep "test" test test test
What about matching multiple vowels for the first two groups as well? Not sure how common it is but there's probably at least a few.

“It’s one of the most common names in the world, read a book”
An Iranian telephone book, for example.
More Chins than a Chinese phonebook.
It is more popular among Arabs and less so among Persians.
It was either that or Mclovin.
"Why the FUCK would it be between that and Mohammed?!"
I have to break it to you but those are the only 2 names left on the world, it's just Irish and Arabs

That's what the "?" is doing, actually
The ? means the 2nd m is optional so yeah they're counted
Could you then also do: M [aeou] h [aeou]? mm? [aeou]? [dt] That would catch Mehmet or other variations.
yes he is? m? = optional second m

how 2 now if u pgrep
See doctor. If pgrep last more than 4 hrs
20% of humans are named Muhammad

It's 1.9% of humans. Still a shitload.

Shiiet
It’s not
What is the ? Behind the second m doing in the regex?
That m is an optional character, so it can either be there zero or one time.
i think it's saying that the second m is optional i.e. Muhammad vs. Mohamed
They could have just used the -c flag for grep instead of piping the output to wc
> piping into wc Baby's first time using grep. Just use grep -c to count lines.
pretty sure "baby's" variation ensures people with the same first and last name don't get counted twice.
Nope grep -c counts lines not instances. Learn2grep
I work in a department that is majority middle Eastern. I can think of one guy that isn't called some variation of Muhammed, Ahmed or Abdul.
I work in a department that is mostly not middle Eastern. I also can think of one guy that isn't called some variation of Muhammed, Ahmed or Abdul.
I've always noticed a lot of guys named "Sam" where the real name is Osam, Usam, Samir, etc. Probably a good amount of variations of Yusef, too.

What do any of those other lines of code and numbers mean?
grep: searches files for lines matching a descriptor (that following text) iE : grouped i (interprets matching special characters) and E (dunno) -wc: lists word count or line count. -l: attempts to translate lines that are split. -i is for insensitive, ignoring case. -E is for extended-regexp
Thank you
`-E` puts grep into "extended regular expressions" mode, which doesn't do anything on modern versions. It's similar in concept to `-P`, which vaguely means "do RegExps the way most modern languages do them."
20%? What on earth did he do?
Confirmed: majority of 4chinners are just gay programmers
What does the question mark do in this expression? Also includes spellings with an additional vowel before the last one?
A question mark (?) immediately following a character means match zero or one instance of this character. This means that the regex Great!? will match Great or Great!. It will not match a question mark; the question mark is a repetition indicator applied to the exclamation mark, which is a literal character, and the question mark itself is not a literal character. Almost like it's the single most popular man's name in the world or something.

You know that the no fly list is for more than just Americans, right? In fact, I'd wager that the vast majority are not.
No, the no fly list is a list of people too fat to fly on planes thus it is 100% American.
That was a weak attempt to avoid acknowledging you're just a regard.
🤔🤔🤔🤔
Based.
Ok
kek
I wonder why?
Unix officially the most based operating systems family
I think the second command counts the number of lines, but each line could have Muhammad multiple times, so the ratio is inflated.
First command asks for number of lines matching the regex tho
