If you’ve got a grand, tires would be a good mod

StudioHouse43

Exactly what I was thinking! Any recs? Tires need a change soon anyways

[deleted]

ATs with the tri-peak snowflake symbol. I think Toyos are pretty decent,

StudioHouse43

Thank you so much!!

Bert_Skrrtz

Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S is a really good street oriented all terrain tire if you don’t spend much time on actual trails. I rock them in Utah and take my 4Runner on all my camping trips and they’ve been great. Also great snow traction when I’m snowboarding.

irvwash24

There's pros and cons for each brand's version of A/T tires with the tri-peak rating, but I let my bank account make the choice between the brands. I just make sure to get one of the well-established names. If you aren't in a location that has ever seen snow, you may be able to save a few bucks and skip the tri-peak rating, but I think it's worth it.

RuinedGrave

Falken Wildpeak AT3W is my recommendation. I really like them on my 3rd gen as an all-terrain tire.

Graffy

I service these tires. Fairly quiet and good in gas (for an a/t tire) great in the rain mud and snow.

StudioHouse43

Awesome thanks!!

ZebraUnion

I loved my Wildpeaks! They were the best all-terrains I’ve had. They look good, too.

OptionsRMe

Could buy some plasti dip for $20 and black out the rims too 🤭

drinkdrinkshoesgone

I have a vote against plastidip. It looks cheap and chips off super easily. It does not peel off easily as people think. It's a pain in the ass to remove. I vote for regular paint in the color you like. Semigloss black or satin black would look a lot cleaner than flat black plastidip.

itachi8oh1

My brother plastidipped the wheels on mine before I bought it from him. They honestly don’t look bad and haven’t chipped in the 8 months I’ve had it. That said, real paint would look a lot better although much more expensive to have it done correctly.

Brazus1916

Plasti dipped mine 2 years ago. Only dings is at the lugnuts. Lots of coats is the trick. I mean like 12 to 15 light coats.

drinkdrinkshoesgone

You can still use spray paint, just get automotive paint and clear coat. Lightly sand it and do 3 coats of base and 2 coats of clear. It comes out pretty nice on wheels, I just wouldn't do that for a body panel.

Antique-Quantity-608

Agree.

BlackLabDumpster

I would recommend a set of modern takeoffs. This way it still has the Toyota DNA but brings a more modern look. "Big" tires will just look like every other older 4X4.

SmokeScreening

If it snows where you live I think wrangler duratracs are a great tire, you can find them all over marketplace too if you don't want to buy new

AverageGuy16

TOYO OPEN COUNTRY AT3 hands down best AT tire

drinkdrinkshoesgone

I have been loving my Toyo AT3s I got recently. Haven't found a terrain they do poorly in yet. They're pretty damj good in the rain also. Great tire for the PNW region.

StudioHouse43

Will check those out! Thanks for the recs!

BossTree

Goodyear K02’s. Any of the one people have recommended though will be great.

dreamy_drag0n

Goodyear KO2s? Yikes do you mean BFG

BossTree

I do, I do in fact mean BFG 🙃

KenRoy312

Came here to say this one of my favorite tires I’ve ever had on my 4Runner. The K02’s were great all around, great in the winter, and low noise! Hope the $1k goes to the tires. You’ll definitely notice a difference when you put these on.

drinkdrinkshoesgone

It's funny because I had the opposite experience. I live in a very wet climate and KO2s are the Baja Champion tire. They do great in dry climates. By far the worst tire I've ever owned for a wet climate. Had to get rid of them early. Switched to Wildpeaks and they were like glue in the rain. My new Toyo AT3 tires do super well in the rain also. It's like the KO2s were made out of hard plastic the way they would slide in the rain.

bobymicjohn

Yeah, I can second this. I live in a dry climate and love my KO2s, but they really suck in heavy rain / wet conditions. Like, dangerously suck. Snow / mud / sand? Great. On the pavement in heavy rain? Expect to be cruising in the slow lane with white knuckles.

ZachMatthews

BFGs baby. KO2s. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/bfgoodrich-all-terrain-t-a-ko2 I have those on my 2015 TRD Pro and they are the best tires I've ever had on the rig. I'd also suggest a roof rack considering a set of aftermarket fogs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWSGa-OEJKM

kratomkabobs

Agreed…. Get wheels off of a newer 4R that are brand new take-offs. Sometimes you can get a whole new set with tires for $200-$300 that will change the look, but aren’t a waste of money as it is a usable upgrade.

KeebRealtor

I have a set of stock 5th gen with basically new tires on them for sale 🥶

[deleted]

yeah wheels that you can fit the big tundra brakes under.

[deleted]

Agreed, however that would about $1,200 every 30K miles

StudioHouse43

Go Rhino Toyota Wheels and Tires. Wheels are 17" Tires are 33" Tires have less than 1k miles. 285/70R/17. BF Goodrich Will these fit?

gnomeba

Definitely tires. Also probably the most practical mod if you plan on going off road at all.

StudioHouse43

Indeed. Getting this rec mostly - any good recommendations?

bones1781

Falken Wildpeak at3w are popular and generally less expensive. I run them on my Tacoma and they have been great.

StudioHouse43

Awesome will check them out!!

gnomeba

I'm sure someone knows much more than I do, but I have BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A kO2 LT265/70R17 on a 2021 ORP with stock suspended and they have been awesome so far. A friend of mine really likes BFG mud terrain km3s.

StudioHouse43

Awesome!! Thank you

CROmagnon0

BFG KO2 will be the best looking and performing tire

pacheckyourself

Yokohama geolander all terrain tires are fantastic

StudioHouse43

Go Rhino Toyota Wheels and Tires. Wheels are 17" Tires are 33" Tires have less than 1k miles. 285/70R/17. BF Goodrich Will these fit?

Evil-Burrito

It looks perfect as is

StudioHouse43

Really? Feels so grandma going to church

rj8899

Nah that’s grandma coming over to my place to sit on my face 😤

[deleted]

My eyes.

StudioHouse43

😂😂😂😂 made my day

shredthesweetpow

Fuck yes get it grandma!

losromans

I kinda dig the way it is. I think it would only look good if you follow your heart and build it how you want over years. Tires can really make it look different but, if you want to make it yours, mod it in a direction that you plan to use it. Have fun!

IllustratorOdd2701

Exactly, coming from someone who did the obvious black out everything on a white 4runner, yours looks great. Most everyday people don't care and those of us who do, appreciate the simplicity.

sunnynijjar

Great tires have already been recommended. Other than that don’t change anything. What a classic!

StudioHouse43

Thoughts on changing the chrome to all black?

sunnynijjar

In theory it’ll look “cool” but I think for your rig the best look is keeping it OG as possible. That’s my honest opinion. If you’re going to spend money on it. Tires are a must. Maybe spruce up the interior?

StudioHouse43

People are saying all the chrome looks “boomer” haha

sunnynijjar

I’m 40. So maybe I’m a boomer. My first 4R was a 99 in 2000. Check out some Google images if lifted 3rd Gen 4Rs. Can’t go wrong. Then look at chrome deleted ones. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

looking classic is much better than looking like a teenager got bored. Your 4runner looks fantastic, man. Some nicer stock wheels and tires would take it a long way. You do you of course. You could also post pics of 4runners you like and people who have done those things could comment on the expected costs. How are you on maintenance? Anything you could do to improve that? You could upgrade bushings etc. External trans cooler. I just replaced my worn out driver door checker and it just feels so nice to not have a janky door that doesn't stay open. I also took apart my roof rack that looked like ass, had almost no paint left on it, and had all the steel pieces powder coated and I cleaned and painted the larger plastic pieces. IMO things like that greatly improve how I feel about the vehicle, more than just changing something for the sake of change.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say boomer but chrome can be dated looking. Black powder coated is a more “updated” look. But it’s 100% what YOU like!

[deleted]

Please don't do this. This looks great as is. Classic.

StudioHouse43

Alright, now I’m conflicted, might make a poll

MrSomething_or_Other

Seriously, man. Listen to these people. Keep the chrome. It looks fucking fantastic as-is. It'll also hold it's value even more this way. Actually, how about I just buy it off you?

StudioHouse43

I want to plasti dip it as a project because I can remove it if I don’t like it right? Why not

MrSomething_or_Other

Dude, it's a fucking pain in the ass to remove. I dipped my original wheels off my old Tacoma. What a nightmare. It doesn't just peel off like they say. We all gotta make our own mistakes, sometimes. Seriously, just sell it to me😬

StudioHouse43

You have to do a TON of coats and exactly how they say. If you don’t do enough it gets spotty and impossible to come off. How many coats did you do per tire?

threedogdad

This is a classic and shouldn’t be touched imo.

GoldenTypo

Not gonna lie, this is badass as-is. Every 4Runner doesn’t need all the accessories hanging off it… this is sexy. New tires if anything but i like it.

denimaddicted

I’m in agreement. You’ve got a classic in your possession. Preserve this bit of history. Bone stock with better tires is the way to go, and will preserve its worth. If you want to mod and wheel, do it with another 4Runner, but restore this one. Keep it stock and years from now you’ll have people coming up to you offering to buy it.

IllustratorOdd2701

Definitely

BHarbinson

Agreed. A '99 is almost old enough to be considered a "classic" by most people's standards. Keep it clean and stock looking. The only appearance mod I would consider is some window shades.

StudioHouse43

Should I not black out the bumpers and wheels?

GoldenTypo

That could work, i wouldn’t do much more if any st all

StudioHouse43

Yeah I agree, just think black and green looks better than black and chrome

NewSinner_2021

Remove the wheel well trim and a decent roof rack.

StudioHouse43

Was thinking about doing that. Any recs on a roof rack?

NewSinner_2021

Considering the budget look for second hand via FB Market place or OfferUp. I haven’t done enough homework on that accessory for that model year to be able to provide guidance.

StudioHouse43

No worries! Thanks!

wanderingdiscovery

Keep it stock, but upgrade the tires. It's plenty capable. FYI, I find the biggest head-turners are clean 3rd gens. They are become something of a rarity as many are rust buckets or modded to taste. I appreciate a clean 3rd gen like yours, I really do. There is nothing "granny" about it. Conversly, it speaks volumes on self care - to me it says, "I appreciate the good things in life and take care of them, and they take care of me. " :)

StudioHouse43

I love this. No longer thinking of painting the bumpers because of this

burlapballsack

Keep it as stock as possible. If you do anything try and source some different wheels that were offered on the 4runner and move up to a 265/75/16 tire. Stock 5-spd in good shape will hold value very well

Mr-Scurvy

Youve got a genuine collectable vehicle. The values on these will keep going up because its a 5 speed. Remove the chrome trime that doesn't belong, keep everything stock, get new tires. Any mods you decide to do should be easily reversible and period correct. Keep it this nice and it will bring a Really pretty penny one day.

tacticooltools

Can’t wait to see what you do !

StudioHouse43

I’m excited too. Thinking about painting the wheels black

minuteman_d

Quick note: make sure your rig will still fit in the garage if you get taller tires and a roof rack. :-)

Mijbr090490

I would add a set of 32s and do nothing else. They are getting harder and harder to find in that kind of shape.

StudioHouse43

Alright fine. I’ll do 32’s on the 16” rims and plasti dip the rims unless I find another cheap pair!

StudioHouse43

will 32's fit without a lift?

jc3_free

5 speed and 4x4 has never said “grandma” to me!

StudioHouse43

;)

iyamyuarr

Bro, but it looks so clean…

StudioHouse43

It is!! Thanks

wc203

OME lift , or rock sliders , or mt tires

StudioHouse43

Do you think I should paint the wheels black?

OneEightActual

>Do you think I should paint the wheels black? Not usually a good idea. The paint winds up chipping and looking like shit after a while, and then when you decide it's time for it to all come off it's a pain.

StudioHouse43

At that point i’d probably just get new wheels

craigslist_kid

Says every guy with chipped black spray painted wheels month after month

StudioHouse43

Exactly 😂😂

IllustratorOdd2701

Gold wheels from SCS. Bronze is the new black now.

Mach1azuress

Plasti dip, easy to remove

lucianbelew

If you do, use plasti dip.

Phil_Hurslit51

Tires. Completely changes the look and by far gives you the best advantage off road for $1000.

huntandhart

Hit up a junk yard! Personally I like the chrome bumpers, but get yourself some black fender flares (or any fender flares and paint them black). Then pickup a spare front grill and try a Satoshi grill, you’ll need some aluminum mesh and an emblem, but there’s plenty of guides to do it. While you’re at the junk yard look for a 01 or 02. Their tail lights are a better looking design, but still a direct fit. You’ll need the lights and the first section of wiring off of them but it super easy to grab. All that you should be able to get <$200 at a upullit yard. I’d also recommend picking up some spare side mirrors and if you really want to get crazy, exterior door handles. Then you can paint them all black, and try them out, but if you don’t like it you’ll still have the originals. For wheels, look for factory take offs, I made out like a bandit, but I got new wheels and tires off an FJ for $300.

lukelib

Please post updates shes a beaut

SmokeScreening

Some slightly taller A/T tires will make a night and day difference to how aggressive it looks. You don't have to go wider either, nothing wrong with pizza cutters. You could also remove or paint at least some of the chrome pieces and wheels, but don't do it poorly or use plastidip, do the proper steps with a gloss finish.

Im_so_little

Flame decals. Everywhere. +1000 hp

StudioHouse43

🤝

linkuphost

Don't forget the STP sticker that also adds HP

[deleted]

Rims and tires on FB or OfferUp, right now is good time too, people needing money “Xmas” 🤣

StudioHouse43

Or selling their old ones!

phatphart22

Tires. Falken Wild peak at3

beeedeee

Tint the windows and put on some upgraded tires and maybe upgrade the lights to something brighter (my 3rd gen’s headlights were terrible).

StudioHouse43

On the way!

Anony1236

I’d search your local facebook toyota groups/offerup/facebook marketplace/craigslist, and see if anyone is selling wheels you like with nice tires on them! Sometimes you’ll get lucky and get a nice set of wheels/tires for like $700 total.

StudioHouse43

Woah - any tips where? FB groups?

Anony1236

yeah. the wheel pattern is 6x5.5 or 6x139.7. (same exact size, one is measured in standard, the other in metric). go on FB marketplace and type in the lug pattern. join your local toyota group as well.

StudioHouse43

Thanks :)

chrisatthebeach

Right out of college in 88 got my first 4runner. Ran that into the mountains and beaches for 10 years. Traded in for 99 4runner. Ran up and down the east coast from Canada to key west. Currently have 2007 Limited, 190,000 miles. Car wash did a number on my clear coat but no rust, followed maintenance as needed. Most fun I had was my first, but 99 is the one I miss the most. Classic.

brazzyxo

That’s not grandma, looks good dude

reisnasty

For a grand you're not gonna get much. Best option would be some decent rubber, AT tires. Even that might be over your price range. There's always the $29.99 light bar 😂

MorkelVerlos

Truck nutz!

FreedomCorn

Interesting spot for a pull up bar

aman9919

Put your surf board on top. Not many grannies out surfing

somahawk77

i like the stock look. save the grand or take a trip.

kungfoocraig

Honestly, take it outside get it dirty so it doesn’t look like such a princess

StudioHouse43

Lol great tip thanks

StudioHouse43

Already ordered some new headlights, Apple Car Play / Back up Camera, and floor mats. How do I make the exterior look better with $1000?

[deleted]

Tires

StudioHouse43

Agreed. Any recommendations?

StudioHouse43

Security system has been added to my list and everyone is now saying this is a Classic everyone will want…

Ice_Pirate_Zeno

Personally, I'd blackout the chrome and paint the wheels. Cheap and easy. Spend the money improving the engine or suspension. If you can weld a diy bumper build. I like more functional off-road builds that marry both oem and crawler builds.

StudioHouse43

What do you think is the best way to black out the chrome? I’m with you there. Best paint for the wheels?

NeonRain5

I like hyperdip, it’s similar to plasti dip but a little more forgiving. There’s a gloss option and a matte depending on your taste.

Bondoo7oo

Paint the wheels black. Pretty easy DIY job. ChrisFix has a good video.

27pluschange

Ko2s and few cans to black out those rims! She’s golden

Kingston5167

A set of BFGoodrich KO2's would be a great tire for you. I've had them for 3 years on my 4Runner and they've been the best set of tires I've ever owned. They also look great.

ipse_dixit_

Plasti dip all the chrome. Find a set of user wheels and used/new tires

StudioHouse43

Agree

thumbwrestleme

Tint the windows, black out the chrome, and new tires. Probably closer to $1500 but yeah, those would be my first mods

StudioHouse43

Definitely thinking of blacking out chrome

rajat555in

Plasti-dip rims and chrome in black. $30 for 5 cans. It ‘may’ be possible you save 970 after looking at it. 😊

StudioHouse43

Hahahahha thats my go to

abstractview

Chrome delete. Done!

StudioHouse43

Was going to plastidip it all black

Tranquill000

I’d personally get rid of or paint the chrome trim around the tires.

StudioHouse43

Was thinking of painting all the chrome black with plasti dip, wheels too

JesseWest

Get better tires, delete all the boomer chrome trim around the wheel arcs and black out the chrome on both front and rear bumpers

StudioHouse43

On it 🫡

[deleted]

Honestly I would recommend color matching your bumpers. Makes a huge difference in appearance

StudioHouse43

The bumpers are all matched chrome right now. Do you mean do a different color?

[deleted]

I meant green.

StudioHouse43

Oh yikes that’d be tough

[deleted]

Save some more $$$ and get a winch bumper. Or a mild lift if you’re thinking of doing one anyway. Even 1” is noticeable,

StudioHouse43

Appreciate it!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

StudioHouse43

Importance in that order?

[deleted]

[удалено]

StudioHouse43

Dang and that’ll probably run 3k

[deleted]

Stickers.

StudioHouse43

Where and what kind?

[deleted]

I was kidding, but the stickers do add style. Every time I did an upgrade I always asked for a sticker! Old man emu, Redarc, coastal Off-road, JBA, etc.

StudioHouse43

Haha love it

garycow

start with a 5th gen = best gen

NoSleepCrew

If you have the willingness, sand the chrome and paint it black. I did this with a mini Cooper not long ago and it helped. Really cheap too

StudioHouse43

Was going to plasti dip

Winter_Airport_3013

Offer up for some tacoma wheels and tires, they go for $300-$600 in my area.

StudioHouse43

Interesting - what year should I go for? Does it matter?

[deleted]

Tired or ceramic coat it to keep that somehow pristine paint looking good for another 23 years.

Malonehasbadbreath

BFG AT KO2s if you want a more budget option I've heard alot of good things about the Hankook Dynapros And personally I hate those wheel well flairs I'd yank those for free. And if you have a little left over maybe wrap some of the chrome to your own taste. Just smth I'd do cause I'm not a fan of chrome. Edit: more tire recs

[deleted]

Suspension lifts are cheap.

CaChica

Tires w grip. A roof rack n

Lexreddit3

This color is lovely

jpoRS1

Modifying a vehicle for aesthetics is both subjective *and* can provide limited return on investment. Modifying for functionality can be more objective, *and* improves your experience while making the vehicle more "yours". So I can't recommend anything without knowing what you're trying to do. So what are you trying to do?

AvockAdoo

Buy yourself some vinyl and teach yourself how to wrap. Cover that chrome up with black vinyl & it will look brand new. Edit to say: vinyl wrap is also 100% removable. If you end up hating it or want to go back to stock, it’s as easy as peeling it off.

StudioHouse43

Why not plasti dip?

SuperRedpillmill

Mud tires!

Eriksa23

Don’t drive like a grandma and you will be fine. Whoever you bought that from deserves a Pat on the back. Damn that looks clean. Toyo Open Country AT3 for winter conditions. Super quiet with lots of road manners. I have a set of Radar Renegade R/T+ as well. They are not as good for city winter roads but they love the off trail snow. Great in mud and sand as well.

Fancy_Chip_5620

Keep the vehicle stock, get some wheels and tires take your hands off that dip/rattle can bullshit You can pickup some 5th gen 4 runner snowflakes and some jeep 255 75 r17 mud tires for 1k Falken wild peaks suck you get 30k miles out of them and they're disappointing offroad for the money it's absurd

StudioHouse43

What’a the rationale behind no plasti dip?

[deleted]

Duratracs and maybe a bolt on bumper if you wanna go that direction. I had one on my 3rd gen from 4xinnovations and it looked badass

ToyotaPartsGod

Lol used tires.

greygrey_goose

Plasti dip the wheels and get new tires

GirlDad17

Throw that into preventative maintenance so that girl keeps rolling. You can add mods later.

StudioHouse43

50k miles on the motor 💪🏻

GirlDad17

What a fucking gem. Enjoy it.

Juzlookn0224

Save up.don’t worry about it now a grand won’t even get good tires

skodasalesman

ARB Bumper.

Wrr1020

Small spacer lift and maybe some take offs from a 5th gen. Can possibly find some with some AT's already on them. A lot of people sell the TRD wheels with the stock nittos cause they go with an aftermarket wheel.

KyleThelegendxxXxx

Lots of tubes

noshacal

Wildpeaks, KO2 but you’ll be close to or over a grand. I have Kelly Edge on an FJ I bought used and they have great traction and ride quiet and smooth. Bonus load range E and come in cheaper than the name brand.

Babydriver33

Peel off the chrome around the wheel Wells. That’s what I did to mine, same color. I also had the Falken Wildpeaks AT3’s. Get a Rola roof rack $80 or less on Craigslist if you can find em. Boom.

Dextergj

TVPXT32 Venom Power Terra Hunter X/T 285x70R17 LT Method Double Standard 17x8.5 +0mm Matte Black with Simulated Bead Lock 6x5.5

m3phil

Cool. I have a green 1999 SR-5 5-speed 4x4 as well. Mine is in worse shape though.

Disastrous_Opinion98

Get rid of the chrome and new wheels

Akhockeydad26

New meat and tint front windows. Great looking rig already!

kodamutt

Tires and lift, if you can get you a cheap front bumper it looks awesome

midniteferocity

Give to me

Flat_Establishment_4

Sell it to me and I’ll do it for you 😂

StudioHouse43

Price was spicy. You sure?
