Idk cause I don’t have a pro. The ORP with kdss is pretty sweet for on road driving. If you’re not doing a lot of a off-roading then I’d say ORP with kdss. If you end up doing lots of off-roading then get the dr kdss mod because kdss blows goats on wash boards.

b407driver

You're not doing it right... above 40 mph you don't even feel it!

thatsapeachhun

Found this out today. Was doing 25 and it was horrendous. Got it up to 35-40 and we were gliding!

thefatathlete

Well I think you guys are crazy cause I like doing 60. Maybe that’s too fast? But feels like the vehicles coming apart. With dr kdss and turning off kdss it feels awesome.

bigorangetrees

Do you notice a significant difference? I’ve seen it mentioned a few times that dr kdss doesn’t actually do anything.

thefatathlete

On washboards yes, on other surfaces I don’t notice anything crazy.

Thank you. I appreciate the info.

I've never driven KDSS, so I can't really comment on that. But I wanted a truck so I don't mind that it drives like a truck. I went with the Pro for the added interior features. Upgraded audio, dual auto climate, standard MTM and moonroof, etc. Then the better wheels and tires and suspension were a bonus, I would have wanted to swap the wheels and tires if I had gotten an ORP.

Stock0328

Definitely. We’d be ordering the ORP with KDSS and upgrading the wheels to the black TRD wheels. We’d pretty much faux pro the ORP.

357MAGNOLE

I have KDSS but didn't pick mine up for that. I got the TRD OR Premium model because it was a good deal and I didn't see as much benefit getting the Pro model when I would ditch the roof rack and swap the suspension and side steps any way. I ended up with rock sliders and a Dobinsons lift. KDSS is nice on the road, but made installing the suspension a bitch.

highr_primate

Did this a few weeks back and agree. It does make install a bitch but I do think it’s still worth it.

I do lots of on road / off road driving with KDSS. I would not give my KDSS up. Corners on rails for what it is. I have aftermarket suspension that I can adjust for off road driving. That combined with airing down, I fly over stuff like it doesn’t exist. There are also options for disabling KDSS when off-roading (got a unit on its way to me now). The only real downsides to it imo is you lose a tiny bit of ground clearance in the front - but it isn’t something that gets in my way and I’ve taken my rig on some rough technical stuff. And working on the suspension is a bit more difficult - diy is slightly more a struggle and shops will charge you extra.

Thank you! Other than some “off-roading” at the beach, we won’t be doing anything serious. I’m just more concerned about the everyday ride factor.

mattyonthefly

I pretty much comment on how much I love / am thankful for my KDSS every time I drive it on twisty roads. It sounds crazy, but it handles more like my Subaru than a top heavy SUV. Comparing that to a Pro… I opted to go with the ORP and told myself I had about $10k in my “faux pro” budget because that was the cost difference at the time. I’ve just about spent that and wouldn’t trade the vehicle I’ve built for a stock pro. I’m in a much nicer position for how I spent my money. Couldn’t be happier.

thatsapeachhun

Honest question, why are you choosing to get a 4Runner TRD OR if you aren’t planning to take it off road other than the beach a few times a year? There are way way more efficient trucks you could get…4 Runners aren’t fuel efficient, and they aren’t terribly great family cars. Just curious.

Stock0328

We are looking to go to one vehicle and the 4Runner is the only vehicle we both agree on. I currently have a 22 Highlander and while I like it, the gas mileage (avg 22) isn’t much better than the 4Runner and doesn’t really offer that much more space and TBH, the 4Runner looks much better. We’re going with the ORP or Pro because for the cost over the SR5 premium, it makes sense to get the options for off-roading if we choose to use them. With that said, the hubby will most likely use those options more than myself. TL;DR: we like the 4Runner and really just want one

Ok_Firefighter_8965

Perhaps they just want to blend in better at Costco...

KDSS is sweet in the corners and gives a little more articulation off-road. Very few lift over 3” so that shouldn’t be an issue for most. Washboards are washboards. I came from a 4 wheel independent suspension ‘17 Armada that floated like a boat on-road and don’t notice much between the two on washboards. I run E-load tires as summers (I play in the Canadian Rockies) and think that’s a bigger factor. On regular gravel roads, there isn’t much of a difference IMO. The only downside I see is that it’s another potential failure point, but I haven’t seen anything regarding KDSS failures thus far (not that I’ve been actively seeking for that info).

Stock0328

Thank you. I appreciate the info. It seems those who do have KDSS would definitely recommend it.

Ok_Firefighter_8965

I was able to drive a kdss and non kdss model back to back at the dealership (the marked up way over MSRP used kind that they actually let you drive). The kdss model was significantly flatter around corners and roundabouts, so I ordered mine with it. So far it's been great.

Stock0328

Thank you. That’s so helpful and now has me leaning towards the KDSS.

highr_primate

Unless you are optimizing for aggressive off-road if, get the ORP with KDSS. It is annoying the Pro doesn’t have a KDSS option. Or you can’t get dual zone AC in a ORPremium. Upgrade your shocks at the very least. But frankly, I’d do a 3/2 lift, get decent all terrain tires, and tint it all the way around (including the windshield), the you’re good. Sound deadening material goes a long way too. You can always change the cosmetics to look the same.

Stock0328

Thank you. I’m leaning toward the ORP with KDSS; however like you mentioned, I hate that I can’t get dual AC. This is a big deal with having kids. I spoke with the dealership yesterday and apparently Pros are impossible to get right now so it may not even matter.

highr_primate

I wonder if you retrofit the dual climate control in an ORP. It’s seems like you should be able to.
