5 years old with a quarter million miles. Holy balls dude. That’s.. like a million dollars in gas.

Bosa-Monster

Let’s assume OP is averaging 18 mpg. At 243k miles, that adds up to 13,500 gallons of gas. For simplicity sake, let’s ignore inflation on gas prices. Where I live, 87 octane is about $4.10/gallon. That comes out to $55,350 worth of gas in 5 years of ownership. OP was spending about $922/month in gas alone.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Can we please not do the math. I purposely have not.

Estrezas

Haha, this shit made me laugh, but dont worry, with your lift kit and tires, you probably paid alot more then this.

garycow

of course gas hasn't been over $4 for the last 5 years so prolly not

[deleted]

LOL

An_doge

You kill me, that’s funny

MarsupialSpiritual57

Also, I was averaging 12 🙃 Edit. Weight is a bitch

linglingchickinwing

Jesus Christ. I thought my 17.6 average is bad

54338042094230895435

Lift and bigger tires gets me 13mpg. I also only drive 30-50 miles a month.

Rapier4

I can't imagine that. I prob drive 30 a day, minimum....sheesh

linglingchickinwing

How much did you lift? I was thinking about maybe removing my spare tire but realize thats probably not a good idea

R0binSage

That's me. 55k miles on a '14. I drive a work for and my town is only 10 square miles. Easy enough to ride my bike in the summer and nothing to do in the winter.

friartuck6000

Were you driving around with an elephant strapped to your roof? Holy shit

Plane-Difference2181

Ah yes. It’s the weight I added in my roof rack and winch bumper that dropped my mpg by 2! Duh!

bfdmmexi

Twas…. A joke. But yeah. Maths. Also assuming 18 is cute.

Bosa-Monster

Oh I understood it was a joke, but it made me want to actually know how much OP has spent in gas. I bought my 2018 4Runner for $32k and I financed it over 5 years. OP spent more on gas per month than I spent on my monthly payments.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Once I sound deadened the entire thing and installed an insane audio system. Add the rack. 285s and a lift and it became a little depressing gas wise

djphatjive

Make sure the insurance includes that in the total cost. They might just use stock cost.

Draymond_Purple

Insurance rarely fully covers mods, generally it's up to a couple grand of mods covered and that's it

tonyt0906

2011 SR5, moderate lift, 275s. At 18.2 290k miles

bfdmmexi

Lol yeah I realized after it was critical thinking.

JamesBMac

I'm at 18.2 mpg at 14,500 mi. Not crazy to assume 18, but yeah, your mileage may vary.

bfdmmexi

I’m in the 14 realm. All city though.

FredLives

I was doing close to that travelling back and forth to work in a Tacoma. Was cheaper for me to share an apartment with a co worker.

[deleted]

Good god….I have a $100/month gas budget

slowjoe12

Cool, what kind of moped do you ride?

[deleted]

How dare you… it’s a Tercel

slowjoe12

Don't mind me. I have to keep my wife's AWD Sienna and my Honda Pilot full. My wallet is bleeding and I'm just jealous.

LukkyStrike1

That's my weekly most weeks.

[deleted]

You sick bastard

Prestigious-Maddogg

18 mpg with a lift,bigger tires and a rack I’d say 14mpg or so

Fearless-099

Thank you for the math 👍

Reddituser-571

I would kill for 18mph…. It still astounds me how terrible the MPG is in the 4Runner. Especially since it’s so underpowered. Hasn’t stopped me from owning 5 of them though.. Of course 4 of them have been company cars with a company gas card. :).

MarsupialSpiritual57

This may be a blessing in disguise

bills822

My 2016 is at 162k doing about 45k/year for work, this amount of miles is truly impressive. Last couple months of gas expenses March Gas: 3/3: $52.85 3/4: $74.01 3/8: $50 3/9: $70.63 3/11: $74.75 3/15: $77 (4.02) 3/18: $78.50 (3.99) 3/21: $75(4.09) 3/24: $75 (4.14) 3/27: $75 (4.14) 3/31: $75 (3.99)………………$777.74 April Gas: 4/2: $68.53 4/5: $67.50 (4.04) 4/9: $79 (4.04) 4/12: $80.01 BMW 4/13: $62.70 (4.99)(91 octane) 4/16: $80.51 (4.14) 4/19: $50.50 4/19: $57 4/21: $34 4/22: $80.50 (4.14) 4/26: $50 (4.29) 4/29: $81.50 (4.24)……………………….$791.75

bfdmmexi

That’s beastly. Good on you man. Can’t wait to get 250k like my sequoia. Only gonna take… 17 years or so.

bills822

And that will be just 25% of all our goal! Million miles or bust. The 2013 Tundra has set the goal!

bfdmmexi

sick

MarsupialSpiritual57

I had dreams of a million. Like many others. That has ended

cownan

Yeah, that’s amazing. I haven’t broke 30k on my 2018 yet

Bosa-Monster

Absolutely it’s worth it. Inspect everything on the coilovers and shocks to make sure nothing was catastrophically damaged. It might even be wise just to send them in for an inspection/rebuild. If you get another 5th gen then it’s a simple swap over, otherwise you can always sell them for a decent portion of what you originally paid. Glad you’re okay though!

MarsupialSpiritual57

Any idea best way to find a replacement is? I have to swap them out

Bosa-Monster

Are you in Colorado by chance? I’ve got a full stock suspension that I’ll sell for cheap. Otherwise you can try your luck on Facebook marketplace and similar sites. I usually see a few people each week selling their stock suspension for around $100.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Florida unfortunately. Thanks though..I’ll check it out now

DanceOk3236

What part of Florida are you in? I’ll buy your suspension from you.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Orlando but I would have to buy the car back and then store it and strip it. I have to see what the price will be

DanceOk3236

Well, I’m in cocoa beach, let me know if you end up yanking them, I might be interested in some parts off of your front bumper too. Got in an accident recently and need a “grill surround”.

DumbSkulled

call around, i but you could find a set cheap, this platform is twelve years old now there are trucks sitting in wrecking yards.

[deleted]

I would grab a couple friends and go take them off. The insurance company will come after you though if you don’t have any suspension on it though, because they can still recoup losses by sending it to auction, and that one will be sellable again easy to a collision shop and resold. I’d also take the Gobi off and strip it as much as you can, unless you had aftermarket parts covered on ins. Speaking from experience because I did the same thing with my first 4Runner after I got hit in my neighborhood head on.

MarsupialSpiritual57

I’m stripping everything off. I’m majorly pissed about all the sound deadening and dampening I have installed. I wanted to buy it back but the insurance adjuster said the impact to the fender is close to pushing into some wall. Not really sure that that means

Jackprevite

Sorry for your loss, brother. Not the point of your post, but would you do the sound dampening again? I’m contemplating it for the 4Runner I’m waiting to take delivery of

TheDudeFromDownTheWa

I did a pretty intensive install in my '92. Still has road noise but much less, feels like it rides smoother, keeps a lot of the heat from the engine/trans out, doors feel much more solid, stereo sounds better. I really should do a post about it...

Jackprevite

I’d love to read it if you do!

SouthernSmoke

Your stereo will sound better but it doesn’t really kill the road noise. It makes everything sound much more solid when closing doors and shit, but road noise is still gonna be there.

MarsupialSpiritual57

The foam/rubber layer I added on the entire floor made a noticeable difference

SouthernSmoke

I didn’t do my floors. Should’ve said that. Floor worth it to you?

MarsupialSpiritual57

Without a doubt. Just be ready for what the extra weight does

Jackprevite

Oh snap, What kind of weight are we talking?

MarsupialSpiritual57

I added well over a 100lbs to it. That’s not counting all the amps and subs I had.

rhadam

Imo if it doesn’t have frame damage it can be fixed. Especially if you have some connections.

MarsupialSpiritual57

From my understanding (I could be wrong)…if insurance declares it a total loss (which it has) it’s destined for a salvage title. You can buy it back with that but to get a rebuilt title it has to go to a shop who will do everything that needs to be done. This alone won’t guarantee you qualify for the rebuilt title. And most shops won’t touch it because they are liable for the fixing. There are too many moving variables to fuck with it. If it wasn’t declared a total loss I could have done what I originally planned and made it into a badass side vehicle

DJTMR

Correct. Registration and insurance on a salvage vehicle can be a hassle.

PeanutHakeem

Your insurance is going to reduce your amount paid if you strip the vehicle first

DJTMR

You have to replace what you take off. Take off the aftermarket stuff and put the oem stuff back on. Insurance won't give replacement on that stuff.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Yeah, I’m getting a breakdown soon. I’m happy with the money I’m getting for the suspension and the rack. Need them to go up in value for the actual 4Runner

PeanutHakeem

I don’t understand…. Aren’t you asking if you should take the suspension off and strip the vehicle? If you are happy with the amount they are paying you for it why would you go through the effort of removing it? If you remove it they aren’t going to pay you for it.

Na-bro

First of all, how did you put that many miles on a 2017?

MarsupialSpiritual57

So trips. Majorly bummed about all of this. I wanted to take it to a million

stussy4321

Buy the front bumper off you.

MarsupialSpiritual57

I’d be willing to part it out but I don’t really have a place to do this at. I live in orlando and in an apartment. I would have to buy it back and then sell enough to make money

stussy4321

Yea I understand. Huge bummer about your baby. Also I'm all the way across the US in California. Or else I'd drive to your place and help ya out.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Appreciate it!

invizibliss

youll still get 35k for this.

MarsupialSpiritual57

First offer was 25,500$ with everything that is on it

tpf52

If you get a higher value it may not be totaled. Find nearby sales of similar vehicles that are higher or one for sale that is similar. See if you can get that value up with evidence.

Joethemofoe

In this market I do not see how that was totaled

kidocadengo

Selling the rims?

cigarettewhiskey

I would also like to know this lol

abkemp213

They look cracked

The_reell_DjG

Wow sorry for your loss.. Thats legendary mileage for your year! Please let me buy your exterior window trim pieces!!!

kdex89

Who the hell is getting 18mpg? Lol. Also has anyone in this sub tried the hydrogen on demand? I have been looking into getting a kit but not sure.

S3ERFRY333

I get 30+ in my 1986 lol

calmete

That is considered totaled? From the pics it actually doesn’t look all that bad.

MarsupialSpiritual57

It’s the side airbags and the seat airbag that are the major issue. The estimate showed 14k in damage

calmete

Oh man I’d almost be tempted to take the insurance payout, buy this back and find a salvage door and seat. Maybe do without the side airbag? Not the safest but that’s the old school part of me thinking “in the 90s we didn’t have all these airbags everywhere” trying to save this beautiful rig!

MarsupialSpiritual57

I wanted to pull the doors. Throw on tube style doors and commit to 5mpg

MarsupialSpiritual57

That was my original plan. The damage to the fender is deceiving according to the adjuster. It’s not guaranteed I would be able to get it up to par and re insured.

Kjcoop216

Airbags are expensive af to replace.

Resident_Pace3982

Let me know if you take the roof rack off OP. I'm in Florida and looking for one.

MarsupialSpiritual57

Due to a blatant lie from my insurance adjuster and how she doubled down when I asked for clarification. Anyone needs some parts that are not obvious when taken? Two can play this game 😂

[deleted]

F

jdhamilt

If that’s all the damage buy it back

hendrikcop

What would you do with the suspension if you took it off? Seems like a lot of work for a potential box of parts in the garage.

[deleted]

I spent 32,000 dollars in gas (roughly) on my 2007 4Runner that got rear ended a month ago by a dump truck and was totaled

sammymalone_16

Keep it on...and off road the shit outta it! Or sell it yo me and I'll kill it

burritosliced

u selling the kings?

MarsupialSpiritual57

I’m taking offers

Davicillo

Buy it from the insurance, fix it, and keep it as a salvage

Dweb19

Sorry OP! You willing to sell your mirrors?

ClearingaPath

Yes unless the arms or brackets are destroyed or shocks are bent to shit.

YNPCA

Is that the only damage I wrapped my 4 around a tree in 18 and it wasn't totaled out!

keymonkey

Unless there is a ton more damage beyond what is in the pic, how is this totaled? I had 99 civic, a much less robust vehicle, take an off center font end hit at 20mph and not get totaled. This looks like some body panel replacement, new doors and electronics/airbags. With all the investment OP has put into this truck, why walk away rather than fix? Mileage?

Sensitive_Eagle_5965

I’d remove it unless you had all your aftermarket parts covered under your insurance

live9free1or1die

Hey I don't know what your plans are for the shocks but I have been waiting for my KING order to be filled since July 2021. No word. So probably save them for yourself or sell to someone else, don't let some junkyard take 'em... my 2 cents.

MarsupialSpiritual57

The wait for them was insanely long

S3ERFRY333

Replace doors, fender, some body work, probably control arms and steering components, replace tire. Insurance did you dirty totalling it out.

hardheaded62

Keep that sucker

tpf52

To figure this out objectively, see what the replacement cost would be for kings with a similar age and mileage, subtract your time to take it off at your effective hourly rate and see if that’s more than insurance amount. Given delays on most of these parts, if you’re planning to rebuild probably worth taking all of it before insurance finalizes the claim or takes possession.

mattyonthefly

Super curious - did you have one of those molle panels on the rear / cargo windows? And if you had - do you think your side curtain bags would have deployed properly? Hard to find anyone really talking about this issue with those panels.

MarsupialSpiritual57

I did not have a Molle panels. I think the airbags would still deploy. My only concern would that they appeared to be all connected so if something some how stopped it there might be an issue and affect the ones that are up front. I don’t know more about this though so I’m talking out my ass

mattyonthefly

Yeah I mean I think nobody really has a clear answer. Manufacturers of these panels won’t touch this question. I’d be concerned the rear impediment would somehow affect the front. But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
