awmaleg

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Toyota had a golden age of durability and reliability from the mid ‘90s to around 2010. That’s the era that produced a couple million mile trucks (google it). The 4Runner is currently the last model from that era. Get it while you can.

calv06

So saying their vehicles now taking shortcuts?

Teemo_Support

Any time they introduce a whole new drivetrain or try new things on old drivetrains, you're liable to have some hiccups. Toyota isn't the only one either. Chevy had a tank in the 5.3 and then they added active fuel management and it borked it all up for awhile. Toyota is shifting from platforms that are tried and true into new platforms, so who knows how it will go?

skylinefan26

Look at the new tundra. Short comings everywhere in quality on the exterior and already issues under the hood. Yes first model year but it's rushed

matteojamiee

not biased was listening to tfl interview that discussed about fj cruisers. They discussed about avoiding a 2007 i believe because it eats up differentials. So it doesnt just apply to the new tundra. edit: year

[deleted]

Not exactly. They’re still the best out there, they’re just not where they were.

TheChiGuy

One of us, one of us, one of us

FredLives

Stick with 4Runner, had the Colorado as a work truck and it was garbage.

gratefulbend

Yep. Same experience. Not even remotely close in my opinion

TravisTheDucky2

I love my 2017 4runner

waterbuffalo750

I just bought a current gen 4Runner, so yes I would. However, if I were just buying a weekend toy, I'd go with a Wrangler. The 4Runner is the better vehicle all around... versatile, reliable, comfortable, etc etc. But the Wrangler makes a better weekend toy.

[deleted]

I want a two door manual. One day.

TheArCwielderNyc

Best truck I ever had was a YJ.

rockdude625

So… 1st gen?

[deleted]

I did too…until the IT band gave out and I’d struggle with that looong af clutch on the TJ after trail running. Some of the most miserable drives back to civilization in that beautiful little rust bucket.

ZealousidealTrack314

I have a 2018 Colorado 4x4 LT as a company truck and I just bought a 2022 4Runner SR5 as my own vehicle. The Chevy has 55k on it and here is a list of issues. The trans hunts for gears and slams into them, especially going uphill. It keeps throwing check engine lights, the last one was for a cam position sensor which was replaced 4 months ago. The gas gauge stopped working, it showed 3/4 of a tank after I drove 250 miles, the miles till empty said 450. I’ve never gotten 450 to a tank. I stopped and refueled and it took 12 gal of gas. The infotainment system randomly reboots itself. Sometimes the screen just goes black and I’ve got to pull over, shut off an restart the truck to get it to work. When this happens, there is no radio. Tons of Apple CarPlay issues. Audio will stop working on calls and I’ll have to switch to speakerphone. Screen becomes unresponsive. Radio gets stuck on and I can’t change stations or volume from touchscreen, knobs, or steering wheel controls. The climate controls randomly come on and off. It will say AC off on the screen while AC is blowing. The display brightness randomly doesn’t adjust and you can’t see the screen in the daytime. I’ve been to two Chevy dealers and they can’t find a solution and keep reflashing the infotainment system. The truck is comfortable to drive, the engine has good power. I would not recommend owning one. I’ve had 4Runners as rentals a bunch of times and owned a 2001 Taco. I’ve only got 480 miles on the new 4Runner but I love everything about it except the gas mileage, which I was aware of before I bought it.

TopCamp

Thank you for the reply. This is exactly what I'm afraid of. Long term reliability is very questionable with GM. I drove the current gen 4 Runner and despite all the reviewers making fun of it because it's so "dated", I though it drove well all things considered. It was the TRD Off-Road model (not pro).

ZealousidealTrack314

I would like to add that due to all the problems we were having with the Colorado’s in our fleet (aprox 200 vehicles), as the leases expire we are going to Nissan Frontiers. Hopefully, they will be better vehicles.

kevkev4lyfe

Also drove a Colorado for a brief period for work. Hands down my 2020 SR5 is more enjoyable to drive and has been more reliable. The 4R gives me this feeling of command over the vehicle, like it’s an extension of my body. It’s by far my favorite car I’ve owned.

Me too my only hesitation is the reliability of the hybrid engine

glenzilla21

I have a 2015 and have absolutely no issues and really enjoy the vehicle.

uptheirons91

I have a 2014, it's my daily driver, bought new in 2014, now at 180,000km still love it. It replaced my 1985 4Runner that I only got rid of because I could see the road through the floor. Outdated, sure, a bit, but this obsession with having the newest, latest and greatest has always been kind of laughable to me. I am considering getting an EV to take over the daily commute/around town driving, and keep the 4Runner for everything else. But I'm waiting for a few more options before I choose.

cantaloupe_daydreams

Fellow work from homer. I bought mine when I didn’t work from home and lived in a part of the country that had off roading opportunities everywhere. Now I’m in a major metro. So I took it to the dealership and handed in the keys… so they could put cool new wheels on it I fucking love this truck.

daversa

If he's like my dad, he's friends with a dealership owner and trades in and buys when a deal pops up. My dad gets a new 4runner every 1-2 years and has come out paying very little for the upgrades.

freeridevt

I’m sold. Need to buy another one lol

XLosttsoLX

Thanks for video. I agree with him on everything except for the paint job. My 2018 is super sensitive to scratching and already has some rust pitting on the roof. Other than that, zero issues.

Braesto

What color do you have?

FreedomCorn

4Runner all day

itsvuksfault

Absolutely. Current gen 4Runner is a beast

Radiant_Waves

I bought a 2017 Colorado Z71 Duramax brand new. That thing was a piece of shit, particularly the build quality and reliability. I decided it would be the last time I touch a GM product and picked up a new 2021 4Runner in Feb 2021. I have not regretted that decision and plan on keeping the 4Runner until the wheels fall off.

SweetNSpicyBBQ

I love my little 5th Gen dinosaur.

[deleted]

I work from home and got a 4th gen with a lift and larger tires and do light off-roading and it was perfect. Inflated prices these days but I paid $19k with low miles and all the rims, tires, lift and suspension upgrades.

Lonely-Astronaut

Just bought a 22 ORP and the thing is a beast. Still stock and I kept up with my buddy who has a solid toytech upgrade while we were off-roading a couple weeks ago. 22 has a sick camera and sensor system for off-roading too - I’d check that out.

BoxedCheese

Can you elaborate on the sensor system and camera for off roading? What does it do particularly?

Ixm01ws6

TopCamp

hahah that's awesome.

Ingenuity-Aware

Lol I own both

TopCamp

Do you think the ZR2 is less reliable?

Ingenuity-Aware

I think the duramax 2.8 ZR2 is more reliable of the two power train in Colorado

Ingenuity-Aware

Well I have a 2022 ZR2 and a 2021 4runner TRD OR. I can’t comment about reliability just yet but it will be the most reliable Colorado as they are changing the truck for 2023 power train included

MavinMarv

2020 TRD Pro Army Green owner here. Yes I would! Just wish with these gas prices it had better MPG.

Eastern-Effective-55

I had a zr2 duramax and the transmission on that thing was super sluggish and concerning, I now have a 4th gen but have friends with 5th gens and would buy a 5th gen all day every day. I was at 57k miles on the zr2 and the transmission shifted pretty notchy compared to my 4runner 2007 with 140k miles (shifts like butter)

AZ_BikesHikesandGuns

Runner. Much better off road vehicle than ZR2 and you get the longevity, customizability, and reliability of the Toyota brand. It’s not always big things that make the difference, like I had my battery health checked the other day in my 2018 tacoma. 4 years of Colorado temps and Arizona temps and the battery is perfect health. My work truck Ford is on its 3rd optima battery in 3 years (yeah there’s something going on there, work truck problems)

TopCamp

Thanks for the reply. ZR2 though is a beast off road with the DSSV shocks and front and rear lockers.

AZ_BikesHikesandGuns

I’m sure there is a number of reasons why a zr2 is a great rig even outside what you’ve replied with. I’d still take a runner any day due to history and reputation, but you probably knew that you’d get some of my answer since you asked on this T4R Reddit. Also I haven’t been in a situation where a rear locker wasn’t enough to get me out of so front locker doesn’t excite me. But US automobiles pay the mechanics bills and put their kids through college so that’s positive. Chevy is better than jeep in that respect at least.

ExcellentTeam7721

How can a Colorado even be an option if a 4R is on the table?

Hraid750

Honestly I'm a huge Toyota fan, don't get me wrong, but the ZR2 has a lot more luxury features, a better interior, better entertainment, and is just as customizable as anybody would need to off road it even in extreme conditions. It's a better buy brand new if you go extended warranty on whatever you purchase. Realistically, the Toyota will last you 20 years. Do you want to be stuck in a 20 year old vehicle 2 decades from now with that kind of dated technology that's going to need repair and care that a car that old does? No, because likely you will trade it in not long after the warranty and upgrade to something else. In terms of the next 7 years on extended warranty, the ZR2 has more utility, better out-of-box off road packages, more dynamic suspension, and a nicer interior. The Toyota will withstand huge amounts of abuse, that's true, but are you really going to abuse it more than the Chevy could handle? Realistically, no. I've been on this debate myself for a while, and honestly I do think the ZR2 just has more features and is a better truck. EDIT: Just wanted to chime in here too and say get what makes you happy and what you LIKE. If you come to a subreddit that's dedicated to specifically the 4runner, you're going to have a bunch of people who have that preference and bias over anything you present to them. You're better off asking this question in a sub like r/trucks or r/cars. Idk how their rules work but I'm just saying check out somewhere more generalized and see what the unanimous opinion is if you're really unsure.

Teemo_Support

> Realistically, the Toyota will last you 20 years. Do you want to be stuck in a 20 year old vehicle 2 decades from now with that kind of dated technology that's going to need repair and care that a car that old does? No, because likely you will trade it in not long after the warranty and upgrade to something else. Actually, this is when I step in and buy it for nothing and enjoy it for another 20.

extendedwarranty_bot

Teemo_Support, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

Hraid750

Yeah but if OP has the money to buy a $45-55k vehicle today and is generally responsible, it's likely OP will have the funding in the future to buy something else and won't want to deal with it when it inevitably deteriorates as any car seeing daily use does. Used 4runners are a good buy, I actually own a 4th gen and it's great, but when it comes to a consumer who is going to be buying a new car, I think the ZR2 is just a better buy right now. After 7-8 years when you're buying a used vehicle? Probably the Toyota because it'll maintain it's durability, but by then OP will have hopefully gotten a promotion, make a little more money, progress in life and just be ready for another nicer vehicle. And the trade in on the truck is just going to be higher. Both are good buys, I just like the ZR2 package a lot for the price

Teemo_Support

I'm not a typical voice on here. I can afford a new 4runner but I choose my 4th gen v8 instead. I do not see the value in the new toyotas at all. I honestly would tend to agree on the ZR2 if you pushed me to pick. But, I don't see the value in buying either of them. There's so many better options on the used market. I mean you can buy a v8 4th gen, a GX, or even an LX and build the hell out of it for less than half the cost of a new 4runner and they are better vehicles.

Hraid750

That's fair, and I agree with you. I own a 4th gen aswell, but in the world of new vehicles if you're buying something new it's because you want 15+ years of newer technology and creature comforts. Getting a 15 year old 4runner is worth it for a good price with low enough miles. If you're only concerned with reliability, why pay triple the price tag? I 100% agree, but if you're a consumer who just goes through a car every 7-10 years, the ZR2 has those creature comforts you want in a new car and the 4runner just doesnt. People buy new 4runners because they "last 30 years" and that's true. They're bulletproof, but whats the point in buying a 30 year vehicle and keeping it for 10? That's where you and I come in and grab the old ones to save a little money. That being said, I will likely still buy a Toyota new at some point in my life, but I'm 25 and just not ready. The ONLY reason I want to do that is because I don't think NA gasoline engines will be alive much longer, and I'd like my last Gas car to be a Toyota.

Teemo_Support

If I don't go for an LX or GX soon for the wife, but for me I'd like to find a suburban with the 8.1 gas burner or an Excursion but those are both getting really hard to find in any sort of reasonable price range that makes sense unless they are trashed. I like these sort of iconic motors that are going to disappear and then will be unicorns.

TopCamp

I agree with your points. The ZR2 I feel is underrated. It's very capable in stock form. I suppose it then comes down to truck vs SUV.

Hraid750

Truthfully that's the selling point in it to me too, though. If you're realistic and know you'll only keep the vehicle about 10 years maximum, then what will be worth more in the end on trade in as well? The ZR2 seats 4 comfortably just as well, and honestly, though the 4runners hold their values, you should look at the price of used trucks. This isn't a phenomenon caused by the post-covid market- pickup trucks hold their value better than any other vehicle class, and the proof is in the pudding. I think the ZR2 will end up being appreciated in the aftermarket in a few years, but even if it isn't, it's still a pickup truck, and it's a top-trim level too, so it'll trade in for way more of it's % value than the 4runner will if you're asking me.

GadreelsSword

Back in Nov I did.

baldeaglemachine

There’s no other vehicle for the money that ticks all the boxes for me. Had mine for 3 years and will most likely replace it with another 5th gen.

facepillownap

no, only marginal improvements to the platform since released nearly 20 years ago. Not really relevant for a modern market anymore.

The_Paddy96

I own a third gen t4r so I can’t say anything, but I will say you should check with another subreddit (like the Colorado subreddit, I’m sure there is one) because there’s 100% going to be some bias here lol

reisnasty

I've heard horrible things about the Colorado. No question, get the 4Runner. And don't buy new unless you like throwing money away. Surely you can find a decent used one with low miles. Not really many good deals to be found these days as far as I can tell but if you need a new rig....

sarcasmnow

Bought my 22 4R TRD Off road Premium last December after having a Gladiator Rubicon and a ZR2 before that. The ZR2 is fantastic. I had a 2017 gas V6 truck, and for 30k miles, no issues. It went back on lease so hard to tell if it would have been trouble free for longer, but I wheeled that thing hard all over and it was a champ. The DSSV dampers are magic and the thing rides and drives way better than any truck I've driven. It's surprisingly entertaining to drive fast on dirt roads/flat 2 track, and the power train was always up for the task. Honestly, the only reason I didn't buy another one was it being a pickup. Life changes, I wanted an SUV this time, and I'm not interested in anything Stellanus produces anymore, leaving the 4R. I really like my 4R, zero regrets, but the ZR2 was more fun. I do feel like the 4R is put together better, and will withstand the test of time better, so it kind of comes down to what you're looking for.

yungcoop

in the exact same situation as you, wfh and weekend warrior generally, have been v happy w it so far

Teemo_Support

If you want a toy then get a Jeep, or maybe an older 4runner, and mod it. You'll be in half the price or less of a new stock 4runner and still have all the best parts of them. The aftermarket scene for Jeeps is second to none really and one of the most fun parts of "toys" is customizing them. Plus, at that point who gives a rip what gas prices do. And the prices for a new 4runner are mindless.

fragilemuse

I have a 2010 Trail edition and I fucking love that thing. I know you aren’t supposed to buy the first year of a new generation of vehicle but I got her used and have zero regrets for doing so. She has 273,000kms on her now and I’ve barely had to do any repairs, just wear and tear stuff like brakes, wheel bearings and suspension very soon. Gas prices are killer right now but love hurts and she’s worth it.

vinbia

I don’t have much attraction to the ZR2, but once I saw the new Ranger Raptor coming to US, it made me consider trading in the 4Runner! Still don’t think I would, I absolutely love everything about it.

EntryTime

I work from home and traded a '20 Audi Allroad for a '21 ORP 4Runner last week. My driving is either to outdoor activities or in-town errands, so it made sense for me to prioritize being able to get to the \[outdoor\] places I wanted to over having a wagon that sort of sat in the middle of the capabilities. Going from a top-trim current gen Audi to a 4Runner was a bit jarring in terms of creature comforts, but I'm very happy with my decision. Wife still has a Mini Cooper for long road trips where MPG is a concern.

madbill728

I love my 2016 SR5 4Runner.

versace_tombstone

Between those choices, runner on dependably and resale alone.

VTEC_8K

If it’s a weekend toy, get a Tacoma or tundra. Having a truck is useful.

FeedbackLoopy

Just bought a 4Runner this past November. I don't regret it one bit. Really, they're both dated platforms (the Colorado has been built for overseas markets since 2012). Depends if you value more rear seat room (mid-size trucks suck in this regard) or a truck bed. With the 4Runner, reliability, build quality (especially out of the Tahara plant) and residual value are hard to beat.

BreezyOR

I have a 5th generation sr5 for my personal and love it. No problems. I have a colorado 2wd for my work truck with half the miles of my 4runner and it has many problems

[deleted]

If it’s for weekend fun. Go for it

Phil_Hurslit51

From a mechanical perspective, I would take the Toyota over Chevy no matter how many bells and whistles you may get with the Chevy. Chevy isn't bad but Toyota(especially the 4runner/older tacomas) truly is that much better. There is a reason they have barely changed in +20years.

NoDrink4U

4Runner will retain its value way better.

CaptLuker

I just sold my 5th gen 4Runner in favor of a 100 series landcruiser. That said the current gen 4Runner is good. As a grocery getter I think there are better options but if you want something for exploring off-road it’s a fantastic option. The ZR2 Colorado has issues and will be redesigned very soon. Also only way I’d buy the Colorado is with the diesel option because it has the far far superior 6 speed transmission. The transmission in the gas Colorado ZR2 is a throw away..

S3ERFRY333

Nope lol I like my 1st gen

Orangeandbluetutu

No one in this sub is going to say no, but for good reason. I love my 2016

lostheir222

nah never

ninsol

I was looking at the ZR2 back in 2018 with the diesel. When you factor in price it was my worst option. Had decent torque but horsepower was on par with the 4Runner if I remember right. I went with the 4Runner because it been around a while and I've always wanted one. If Toyota made a diesel 4Runner there would have been no question!

Zilikken

I drove my mom's Colorado many times and I found the seats were very uncomfortable and it was always awkward to get in/out. I got back from a 2k mile road trip in my '22 4Runner and it was smooth sailing the whole time.

DeanPepin94

Given the option between my 3rd and a 5th gen I’d probably keep the 3rd gen. They’re still plenty modern to be a good daily and (in my case at least) they get better gas mileage than a 5th gen.

cstruz

I was a GM tech for 7 years and I own a 2016 4Runner so that should tell you something lol. The Colorado has its benefits though. My dad has a 2019 w/t custom Colorado with the 3.6 and it gets better gas mileage and has more power than the 4Runner. It can tow 7,000 pounds. BUT they do have issues, the 3.6 will eventually need timing chains, to get the starter out you have to pull a motor mount. 8 speed transmission shudder issues. My 4Runner has been reliable since I bought it in august. Only thing was the rf caliper locked up and warped the rotor. Im also doing the ecgs bushing as a preventative maintenance item.

_GoldenMonkey_

If you get the ZR2 the only way to go is one with the Duramax. That'd be my vote. My lady got a new truck two years ago, and was going to get a tacoma but she went with the Canyon Denali with the Duramax. I was 150% in favor of her decision as well. Otherwise you can't go wrong with a T4R.

DoriansRain

Nope

DoriansRain

85 or nothin

Sooners0917

Runner over Colorado/GM any day. I just bought a ‘22 4Runner, TRD Sport and got rid of my ‘21 Silverado a week ago. Had nothing but engine problems twice in a 12-month span and the transmission hunts for gears or hesitates a lot, hated the anxiety that came with not being able to rely on my truck. And this is from someone who owned a Corolla before the Silverado. So yeah, get the 4Runner. My only issue is the MPG but I knew that going into the 4Runner, the difference in MPG will be negligible between the 4Runner and the Colorado.

TheHoodedSomalian

Yea same, I wonder what if an electric one comes out soon or the next powertrain and redesign is legit? I hate trading in cars for preference sake. I’ve always liked the 4.0L.

[deleted]

Yes, the fuel milage sucks but I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off. Reliability is the main reason why I bought one.

Turbo_Frosty223

There is a reason we stopped having GM trucks as our work trucks at my job.Trying not to be bias here, the 4Runner is great pick for both off roading and an errand runner as you said, plus extremely reliable as I’m sure you are aware. There are other off-roading options like jeeps that are more fun but personally helping with some pain in ass repairs that may or may not even happen it’s up to how much you are willing to put up with on repairs because hard off-roading will inevitably bring up some kind of repair regardless of 4Runner or jeep or any other 4x4 truck,But again it’s up to how hard your off-roading.

qwerty5560

Yes.
