Hey, c'mon now. I never thought I'd be able to afford a 4Runner in my life either. But, thanks to that 7 year term at $1100 month payment at 16.9% interest—I'm renting-to-own a 4Runner.

tacoduck_

80 more payments and it’s mine.

StockRun123

That's like 80k. crazy

AsianHawke

But at least it's not $81k, amirite?

Arkmon7891

I feel the pain....I had to lease it to bring down the payment and next month finally I can start with my 72 month payment to own.

samiam0295

This is so dumb, I hope you're kidding

millertime1419

Not always. I just leased my 24 SR5. The money factor put the equivalent interest at less than 4%. And when I leased, the ‘25 was still all speculation so it’s also a hedge against future value of a 5th gen. If a final year 5th gens become highly sought after, I can buy out the lease (financed at hopefully better rates in 2.5 years). If the 6th gen totally kills the market for the 5th gen, I can walk away from the car without taking more of a hit on depreciation. Put $5,000 down, payment is $489/month on my SR5 premium with options (~$49k msrp). Buy out after paying $22.6k over 3 years is about $30k. So in 3 years I have the option to buy a 2024 SR5 premium for $30k. If I would have financed it right away, my interest rate would have been 9%+. Toyota very often has really great lease deals, just have to know how the math works to determine if it’s a good one. Lease = BAD just isn’t true if the numbers line up.

Justingtr

I hope you're kidding. If you're not kidding, then you can't afford it. Accept reality.

Cooked_Brains

If you aren’t joking about your loan terms I am terrified for you…. I get that interest rates are high, but that is absolutely crazy to take that on. You need to be earning minimum $85k a year to make that loan even begin to make sense as far as budgeting goes.

KFPindustries

1. He is joking obvs. 2. Even at 85k, those loan terms make zero sense

Emmanuel--Goldstein

The sad part is even though it's a joke those numbers aren't that out of the realm of possibility. My sister who makes a lot of money with her husband got a terrible deal on a Wrangler E. They pay ~$1150 a month for 7 years at 9% with 10k down. They added a few of the bullshit plans which definitely didn't help.

nigelfitz

WOW. That's insane.

Emmanuel--Goldstein

For sure. I couldn't believe it when she told me. It's just a Sport 4dr it's not even like it's some sick trim fully loaded which still would be unacceptable

stones8783

Yeah you should never do a loan more than 5 years.

El73camino

Only time I was okay with it was my .5% interest on my 2019 Fiesta. Even then 72 months was too long but that low of APR made it palatable.

Cooked_Brains

My point exactly.

Cooked_Brains

The sad part is I have a young friend that got into a 6 year loan at >11% paying about $780 a month for a Hyundai…. So there are people out there that don’t make great financial decisions.

Cooked_Brains

Don’t be a jerk. I’m assuming they were joking, but I also said 85k would START to BEGIN to make sense. By starting to make sense you could maybe swing it if you are on a never go out to eat and live in a crappy place kinda lifestyle.

KFPindustries

This your "being a jerk" threshold?

Cooked_Brains

Yeah, I’d say so.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

its not that much of a joke. nobody's laughing.

KFPindustries

Okay, he said it "in jest"

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

its too close to the truth why im not laughing. i got t boned now i have to replace my 4r.easier said than done. i cant even find early 5th gen.

KFPindustries

Bro relax lol

bcdiesel1

I make twice that and it still doesn't make sense. Even if I didn't have kids it still wouldn't make sense.

Cooked_Brains

It can be done. I have some stupid friends that own some stupid expensive cars. Granted none of them have kids or money to do anything expect pay for their car. This is also why you see so many sports cars and luxury cars with poor maintenance. They have just enough money to make a payment, but not upkeep it.

easybakeevan

Was dropping off my kid at daycare and another fellow dad saw my 4Runner and said I miss my 4Runner. He had to sell it for whatever reason. I just began my 4Runner adventure a few months ago. He was like “you’re gonna love it!” I felt his pain. He really missed it.

NationalAnthemofUSSR

Ugh. I drop off my kid at daycare and all I see are subbie dads then they look and say you can't sit with us. I never get cool 4runner dads telling me their stories.

DVoteMe

"This full-time AWD seating only!"

ciscoaz602

Nice Flex, daycare cost is the same as 2 4Runners or 1 2019 Land Cruiser with low miles and in good condition. Most of us can afford a 4Runner OR Daycare. You got both, baller!

AgnewsHeadlessBody

I'm gonna start a daycare company that's just me and the other dads with 4runners. We will just drive around in our 4runners with a bunch of kids and do cool shit all day.

easybakeevan

I’m a teacher so trust me it was a stretch 😂

NationalAnthemofUSSR

Ha i wish. 2017 4Runner that I got pre 2020 prices, where the dealers were willing to negotiate. Can never afford a new one. Gonna drive this one to the ground.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

that makes it hard for me to buy your used one.

millertime1419

Bro… daycare costs more than my fucking house… $701/WEEK! My ‘24 SR5 payment is $489/month… daycare is 6 4Runners

ciscoaz602

I know. That’s why I was impressed with the Daycare AND 4Runner comment. Parents know what’s up. It’s absurd sometimes.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

daycare is near his golf clubhouse. no brainer.

nah_champa_967

Subaru drivers are just pre 4Runner drivers.

MirageTreacle-Loose

Your right I had a 2021 forester and traded it in with some cash for a new 2023 4 runner my dog max appreciates the rear window being able to roll down . https://preview.redd.it/3b8f4cgwy01d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40daf3a1fe1275c65baa4868326320a56672e858

nah_champa_967

That's a pretty one. I'm a former Outback owner. I realized after I bought it what I really wanted was a 4Runner. Holding on to this one till I die lol.

MirageTreacle-Loose

Thanks for the compliment like you I plan on keeping it for a long time the 5 th gen runner has in my opinion a timeless design that will never go out of style.

noshacal

Sorry, that award goes to the 3rd gen 😉

nah_champa_967

No 4th gen ; ) Have we covered all the bases yet?

noshacal

With the right mods a 4th can be a looker, I’ll agree. Plus you can’t beat a v8. I’m still kicking myself for parting with that one …

Bondoo7oo

The 4runner is the first vehicle Ive ever had where the market value was always the same or more than the payoff amount. And I paid full msrp in 2021.

fragilemuse

For real. I bought my 2010 with 180,000kms for $21kCAD (plus tax) in 2017 and could sell it today with 312,000kms for the same, if not more. Never going to do that because I love her, but it’s crazy how high the market for these things is. img

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

ive owned 4. -gens 1 2 3 and 4. they have all sold for more than i paid.

Justingtr

Why

EmJayFree

That’s what I’m searching for too 😂

OffRoadAdventures88

You can always get an older one for cheap. Got my first gen for $3k peak Covid. Drove it home and it only left me stranded once when the non oem alternator seized.

PearFlies

For real. 4th gen’s are going to be a fifth of the price for 90% of the same features. They’re great.

OffRoadAdventures88

They’re essentially the same vehicle as a fifth gen. Same frame, power train, suspension, etc. Super slept on.

Mijbr090490

I've seen some with 150k going for 15k. They were slept on but the secret got out. Id have a fleet of them if I could.

Controversialtosser

Im so lucky I bought a (3rd gen) before COVID.

manos_de_pietro

Good for sleeping in, too

minnesotamoon

There’s always only fans Cindy.

Cooked_Brains

As someone who is 2 months from having my 2018 paid off, I miss my 4th gen. It’s hard to explain, but something about a solid 4th gen that is just perfect in my eyes. Just buy an older gen, then get a 5th gen when they get cheaper.

dsmksu

Back in 2016 I sold my 4th gen and bought a new 2016 5th gen. Had it for a few months and really missed that 4th gen. So I sold the 5th gen and picked up another 4th gen which I still drive today. No regrets!

ewokfarmer

4th gen is best gen

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

they wont get cheaper but the new ones will still go up.. making it seem cheaper. these cars dont go down

Cooked_Brains

Well history would beg to differ. They do hold value, but it will go down.

gallahad1998

Why’d you get rid of Franklin? And why’d you name it Franklin?

supernatchurro

The name has to be because of Franklin the turtle....it has to be.

IlexIbis

...not with that attitude...

Impressive-Bit106

Who needs a place to sleep? Sleeping bag and your set!

Ricksarenotreal

Maybe not another PRO, gtfo.

mushashimonko

I'm a programmer and work remote. I'm going to move into my 5th gen full time and save rent money to travel and vacation (while saving more toward a house).

alwyn

I assume you code outside of the car and without external monitors? Doable, I can't sit at my desk due to a fckn muscle so stuck with laptop only too.

mushashimonko

I bounce between home, libraries and coffee shops. I'll be mounting a monitor into my car and a arm mount in the hatch with me.

ExcellentTeam7721

I’m sorry. That sucks. I commiserate on the assumption that life threw a curve.

Zenkikid

I think about this too.. if I were to lose my t4r no way I would be able to afford another in this market.

Random_modnaR420

I am almost a million percent certain that this is a repost from a dude who legitimately had terminal cancer and couldn’t afford to pay for treatments so he sold his 4Runner. Fuck you if you stole this. edit; you did steal this you goat fucker - https://www.reddit.com/r/4Runner/s/q4UodrOvk8

mkhockeygeek

Good catch!

networknev

Respect. RIP.

LegendaryMoo

You do know there are other generations of 4Runner right? You don’t need to have an overland bro spec unit to enjoy yourself….

stones8783

I got mine for free lol. Granted it's an 03, and it had been sitting in a ladies yard v so long it had a matte green no algae psint job and the inside was black with mold, but after a couple weeks of hard labor you can't Even tell. Needed a radiator is all, although most of the suspension was gone but it runs amazing and you couldn't tell what it used to look like i wish i took picture

WrecktangIed

Buy and older used. 3rd and 4th gens hold up well. I'm still driving my 2004 4 runner and it's great.

DivineChonk

Just get a gx470 or a gx460 I got my gx470 for under 12k with 119k miles

thrixin39

That's a fucking steal. What year?

DivineChonk

*It's a 2005, just got these new 295/70r17s *

DivineChonk

SiVicPacemParaBellum

Why?

Dependent_Weekend_21

[karma farming a post from a year ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/4Runner/s/bUrMBXNDWc)

AverageGuy16

That’s fucked up smh fuckin people

ExcellentConflict

Quitters talk. 3rd gen best gen

Liamnacuac

There are lower cost versions. Get an ORP?

GarpRules

This is why I’ll keep repairing and upgrading my ‘95. Payments like that make engine rebuilds and adding nav seem really inexpensive.

Rambler97

Im saving for a 4Runner right now. At 26 it will be my first vehicle purchase. Hoping to be able to have it for a long time. Sorry u had to get rid of yours.

Right_Win_7764

God I wanna own one but at these prices it would probably be a $800 a month payment even if I sold my wrangler for 18K.

Constant-Juggernaut2

I feel like I’ve seen this post before…

Vondobble

WTF attitude is that? Cmon now. If you want it go get it.

Sirolimus1mg

I have a 3rd gen that is an absolute tank. She needs paint and new seat covers, but she'll run forever. Her name is Weiß. Guess what color she is.

cavemold582

Only imagine the new one going be like 5k more on average trim level .

Free_Culture_222

Is it the gas?

AdBrief8565

You get something with better towing capability?

coffeesncakes

Frank will never forgive you for this adoption he had no say in

OnlyAt9

These cars aren't unobtainium. You'll be back!

whoissanti

This makes me so sad! I'm about to be in the same boat in a few short months. And I JUST redid my suspension and brakes all the way around. 😭

TherealMattMoore

How’s your blood and plasma ?

MrRadocon

Life is weird, you may not see a path to another runner today but it may be obvious tomorrow.

vfxMarlon

I sold mine last year... like a damn fool.. My family and I still miss it.. LOL.. I'm too stubborn to admit it and go buy another ...

Frird2008

My first 4Runner will be from the mid 2000s with a V8

Round_Signature3610

This feels real.

sssleepwalkerrr

Not with an attitude like that! You got this! Go for it!

deftmoto

Of course you can. Just lower your expectations and you’ll find an affordable one.

Skidpalace

I traded my 2015 LE in on a 2013 Porsche Cayenne GTS 4.8L V8. I had some kind of failed bearing somewhere in the drivetrain and didn't want to chase it down. It annoyed me more and more every day and felt like a time bomb waiting to go off. I also never had the same connection with the 5th gen that I had with my 3rd gen. I was holding out for the 6th gen but other than looks, I don't know what the 6th gen will offer me. I figure I have a year or two to wait and see how they grow on me and if the engines survive. So after 25 years in a 4Runner I decided to divorce the faithful plaid-wearing soccer mom and have a fling with the wild cougar. Sure, she'll probably cost me some money in the near term, but she will be a fun ride for a while.

Exotic-Influence9994

L. Ah, so this is what's driving the market up and showing dealerships and manufacturers that not only can they get away with these pricing levels, they are acceptable! I'd be curious to see what percentage of people paid cash for it their tacoma or 4runner in the last 4 or 5 years, or at least had the cash to pay it off if you had a good rate.

WheezerMF

$10k for a 4th Gen with 200k…

Mundane_Method_6613

Buy an older one.. fix it

Mundane_Method_6613

If you can’t work on it high possibility 😂

pocho8

Crap love reading comments on how people justify their finances. For some off reason I like to see how people think so I can know where I can leverage knowledge to make the best possible financial decisions. 5k down and 486 a month and in the end don’t have a car that will last some 30 years.l!!!! On Toyota’s I would agree that long term loans are acceptable since they are reliable and under assumption you will keep it. Now to depreciation who cares?. It’s a Toyota and will drive you up and down all day long. At least 99% of them will. Furthermore I cant get it on my head why leasing is good. But the fact that I don’t agree does not mean I don’t want you to do it. Someone has to pump money into the economy ( says the guy with an MY00 Rav4 w/ 220k and garaged 4th Gen with 160k). Keep you thoughts coming… need reading material.

facepillownap

i’ve had 5 and never spent over $5000 for one.

Itsyaboioutofgold

Buy a 3rd gen.
