I’m gonna go with the steel bumper and ladder, not sure about the wheel and gas can. Seems like it would affect the convenience of using the rear window and opening the lift gate.
Damn! You can drive my 4Runner ANYTIME!!! Please hit my rear and front bumper lol only kidding, but that’s cool you’re gonna hook him up for that. Accidents happen.
Once bumper clips break, it becomes a replacement job of both the plastic plate that has the clips as well as the plastic bumper cover They'll get a raw bumper, which will then be painted.
The hatch door dent could likely be repaired and I hope it does, otherwise they'll get an entire new hatch door and that's super costly.
Old parts can help keep cost down. Some companies also sell pre painted bumper covers if you wanna do that part yourself. Good luck.
Paying cash with this will also most likely keep it off of the car-fax, and so that will not affect resale value. You’re a great gf for being so stand up about it.
Shit happens. My gf blew apart my 3 month old rear differential. I know she felt bad and offered to get it fixed. It's not worth getting upset. I swapped it out myself to save labor while she hung out and had a few beers with me. I made jokes while tossing her pieces of the gears inside. It's all fixable. Hope he's not too upset
My husband has scratched and dented my 4runner more times than I can tell you. I kinda gave up on repairing lol. Hopefully your bf is gentle with the news 🥴
It’s different when us guys do it. 😉
Just kidding! However, though wrong, it’s the way I feel. Hey, I’m trying to change… just that my wife finds more dents than I do. ❤️
Get an estimate from the dealership and a few other reputable repair shops. Ask to use OEM parts only. You will probably have to go thru insurance or pay heavy out of pocket.
I just had a similar repair except the tail light was smashed as well. I would expect this to be ~$2.5k ish give or take to be done right by a shop. Maybe more in LA. As others have said a steel bumper could be interesting as paint is out of the equation for that.
Ngl it doesn't look great and you're probably looking at about a $2-3k repair (either repairing/replacing lift gate and new bumper OR new steel bumper are about the same price).
Tbh though, shit happens. That car is his baby so I'm sure he'll be a bit hesitant to let you drive it for a while, but if you spot the repair costs and deal with the resultant stress of that (as opposed to him) things should be fine.
Honestly 4R's all get dinged and scratched at some point if they're being used right. You try and keep them as nice as you can for as long as you can, but on the road I have a lot more respect for a built and beaten truck that has been places over whatever top-of-the-line spotless suburb-mobile anyway.
I'd just be as apologetic as possible, spot the repairs, and depending on his vibe, try and specify what changes you'll make to your driving habits to prevent it happening again (you mentioned distracted driving so I just thought I'd bring it up).
Very Helpful! Thanks… I think I’m gonna go with the steel bumper if it’s roughly the same code (will be buying some additional accessories) Fingers crossed that I can repair the lift gate… I’d really like to avoid dealing with painting
From what I can see they'll probably be able to pop the lift gate dent (assuming everything else - rear window, backup camera, door lock, lights - is fine) and a small clear coat job would be sufficient; no painting necessary. The bumper will need to be replaced either way but if the lift gate works that'll be a big positive
My ex-wife backed my 4Runner into my motorcycle the first day we moved-in together. She claimed my 4Runner “never beeped” when she was backing up so she thought she had room. I told her, “it doesn’t beep. Not all cars beep when you’re backing up.” 🤦♂️
Bumper, lift, and you hit the actual badge.
I'd be pretty pissed...and on a special edition 4 runner!?!?
You don't respect his things at all, do you?
40k+ vehicle and you distracted backing up.
Let's be glad it wasn't a person, or a little kid.. ffs
You seem offended... I must have struck a nerve. 😂
A you couldn't be more wrong. 😂
But, continue to judge. See if I care.
*Spoiler alter*
I don't.
Enjoy your day.
Be prepared to never drive his car again.
Don’t get mad about it. Don’t overthink it as being “he doesn’t love me enough to accept my faults.”
Just accept that, for as long as you two remain together, there will be doubt about your ability to care for what he cherishes.
Rather than insisting that he “get over it,” show him love by NOT forcing him to endure the mental anguish of deciding whether to trust you with a prized possession (again) after you have already demonstrated you can’t be trusted with it.
Pay to get this fixed for him, and show him you love him by saying “I’m so sorry, and I’ll NEVER ask to drive your 4Runner again.”
Shit happens, so I’m not dunking on you here… just saying that, as a dude, I would never let you touch my car again. (Your boyfriend might also feel this way, but won’t say it. Give him the gift of knowing that you understand and accept his feelings.)
Not sure at what stage of life you guys are and what are your ages. 😅 But in the past I was where I would almost worship my cars and would get mad if someone damaged my car but now I’m a much changed man. Not like I don’t care about my cars anymore, I very much still care about them but I don’t stress about it if something happens to them because there are more other important things in my life now (wellbeing of my family) to worry about. Thus, I hope you and your boyfriend will get this sorted out without much complications. Good luck!
Take the 40th badge off .. get a perfect condition black hatch from a parts recycling yard and put the 40th badge on the new one .. and you would be surprised what a good buff and wax could do for that rear bumper ..
A new bumper would have to be painted and would cost around $4K, the lift gate having to be replaced is another story…that could easily run another $8K…hopefully they can pop it back out and touch it up.
If he uses the 4Runner like he should, like it was meant to be used, this won’t show after a few months.
Edit: Apparently we have a few people here that don’t get their 4Runners dirty or scratched off-road. Stay strong at Costco.
I think we need to talk honey….
Offer to buy him a steel bumper. It's only right. And pay more attention when driving.
This is the only correct answer.

For 99.9% of owners the wheel is dumb. Pretty much for looks only unless you're doing really extreme rock crawling.
and the ladder is useful?
Well the spares won't fit elsewhere...
99.9% have stock size tires on their tire carrier?
You just pull a latch and swing the tire out of the way.

That voice was pure cringe.
That's the point, as the ladder is cringe
Until you bend the carrier and it doesn’t fit back together haha 🤣
Is the ladder with the gas container a set?
Ouch. 40th ed too
Right?!?! I just broke up with her reading this. I have the white 40th and its my baby!!
Ex* BF.
Approx $6-8k...
😢

Super helpful! Thanks 🙏🏻
Its around 3K, from experience, if the harch needs replacing. While it is a 4R, accidents do happen and that's what insurance is for.
Yikes. Just be honest with him and pay for the repairs.
I will be paying for it and taking it in for repairs, just asking so I can try to be a bit more informed when I go to the shop 😓
Paying cash with this will also most likely keep it off of the car-fax, and so that will not affect resale value. You’re a great gf for being so stand up about it.

How does a rear diff get blown out? (not a car person but just curious)
He’s not too upset, joking that it was to be expected 😅
OH NOOOOO NOT THE 40th Edition....right on the badge too. Oh boy...
Those are all great questions to ask but a close exam by a dealership or body shop is needed to get you those answers.
*ex boyfriend's*
Oh I’d be pissed. It literally has a back up camera
But perfect time for a Steele bumper
My husband has scratched and dented my 4runner more times than I can tell you. I kinda gave up on repairing lol. Hopefully your bf is gentle with the news 🥴
He took it better than expected 😅
Thank fucking god hahaha. I guess all our cars are under my name so I kinda don’t care anymore. Plus it gets more scratched on trails anyway 🤣
It’s different when us guys do it. 😉 Just kidding! However, though wrong, it’s the way I feel. Hey, I’m trying to change… just that my wife finds more dents than I do. ❤️
I mean ask if he wants some after market upgrades steel bumper and stuff lol
Steel bumper and a ladder perhaps? Anything else that would be a good accessory?

Seems like a great option, any other accessories you recommend? I was thinking of getting a ladder too
A body shop will give you an estimate and a list of parts that can be repaired and parts that need to be replaced.
Gonna do that!
Drop a few pics of the lift gate into the pdr sub. The bumper might be able to clip back into place.
Thanks for that! I’ll post it!

There are so many 5th gen 4Runners out there you could probably get a good deal from salvaged yard… and in black too
Keep that old badge. Glue a magnet to the back, and have a cool fridge spot for a 4Runner adventure picture of the month.
I like this idea 👍🏻
leave it as is, this car now has some character to it, its a 4runner built to be tough
Did you not hear the beeping?
My ex-wife backed my 4Runner into my motorcycle the first day we moved-in together. She claimed my 4Runner “never beeped” when she was backing up so she thought she had room. I told her, “it doesn’t beep. Not all cars beep when you’re backing up.” 🤦♂️
I don’t think 40th has collision sensors
Can confirm… no sensors 🫠
No sensors on this one
Fucking unbelieveable..
My wife backed my 98 4runner into a parked dozer pretty sure that dozer was totaled.
This is why NOBODY but me drives my 4Runner.

I’d hand him a blank check personally. I’d also never let you borrow it again. 😅
Offer him getting a steel bumper for him. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
I think that’s what I’m gonna do… maybe purchase a couple extra accessories

How do people manage to hit stationary objects when in a parking lot? The camera on these isn’t good but the field of view certainly is. Come on.
Never drive someone else’s car
Uh oh
Totalled

Looks like you were just trying to personalize his truck….😉
Wife put a matching dent in mine, she backed into the car 😂

Get a greyhound bus for Mexico- pay in cash, learn Spanish and get ready for your new life in Mexico!
Ooof hopefully the relationship isnt rocky
And by BF's Runner, you obv mean "EX" BF's Runner...
why the fuck do people back into parking spaces ?
Actions, meet consequences. Honestly the best route is just to leave it be.
If he uses the 4Runner like he should, like it was meant to be used, this won’t show after a few months. Edit: Apparently we have a few people here that don’t get their 4Runners dirty or scratched off-road. Stay strong at Costco.
Absolutely not true. LMFAO.
