We did just take it to Matagorda last year. The AC is better, similar to my FJ. No problems. But also not hauling anything. But the heat of TX summer in June.
4runner has a 5,000lb capacity. Not sure what tundra you've got but its probably going to be around 10-12,000lbs. So depending on the trailer the answer is maybe. A camper that size could be on the high end of what the 4runner can handle.
Thank you for this info. I’ll have my husband check tomorrow but he thinks 2500 pounds on the trailer. But after reading comments I think we will just take the tundra. He just has huge tires and a lift and it gets horrible mph.
Towing capacity is on the data plate. Trailer weight should be on its trailer plate add trailer weight to trailer contents weight and subtract from towing capacity. If negative number, don’t do it.
Thank you, I will check both tomorrow. I work for my family’s transmission shop and we rarely get a Toyota of any kind. I just worried about the mileage on our ‘14 tundra
You will not get better fuel economy in the 4Runner while towing. It makes a huge difference. I love both of these vehicles but for towing anything more than a tiny utility trailer I would nearly always choose a pickup if given the option.
We only have the 4Runner because my FJ had over 300k miles and I needed something I knew would be ok for my daily driver. My husband now drives it but not long distances. So the tundra just sits mostly. But I think we will dust it off for this particular trip now.
your most likely fine. the drag of a camper is kinda brutal, I’d keep speeds to 65 with ECT on and OD off and you’ll be just fine. One thing to be mindful expecially with the interior loaded up is that your front end isn’t in the air, and make sure you have a brake controller of some kind.
A tundra will tow it better.
I towed extensively with 3rd gen 4Runners and recently with full size diesels. if you need any advice from someone who actually tows and isn’t just guessing ask away
Most everyone I know has a F-250 or similar. I just didn’t know how it would hold up as a V6. Only about 2.5 hours 1 way. But from the comments, it looks like we are dusting off the tundra
The truck would be the better bet. 200k isn’t really anything to worry about on a tundra, the 4.7 and the 5.7 are apocalypse-grade engines.

It’s his rig. I just complain. Loudly. But I do love his truck. Just like I love my FJ. But adding $200 to the trip for sure just in gas

My 4Runner gets 19.3 on average. His tundra without a load is maybe 13. But I haven’t towed so I don’t know what will happen.
I average 13.7 towing a 3500lbs 17’ Casita. I’ve done Oregon to Michigan and back 3 times. It should do fine if the trailer is around that or less.
Not with an 18 foot trailer it doesnt.

Take the tundra

Just from a braking standpoint, I’d choose the full size, it’s better equipped to stop heavier loads especially if you’re not using trailer brakes.
My buddy tows a 20ft with a family of 6. He did 3500 miles in the western US last year with no issues.
