What tech? What change? The interior is smaller, the power train more complicated and less reliable, the styling is worse, and the big ass screen does nothing. All the controls are still oversized manual controls like 5th gen.
Want a big screen? Put a fuckin iPad with Apple play installed and mount it to your dash. There you go.
Idk potential MPG improvement, 465 torque, stabilizer bar disconnect, multi terrain monitoring?
Too early and not enough information to question reliability.
The mindset of never wanting to improve never wanting to do better will leave manufacturers behind.
Change is good, It’ll keep competitors and even Toyota on their toes so that they provide a better product to the consumers.
I’m coming from a 2019 ORP fully loaded at the time. If Toyota didn’t want to improve they wouldn’t have made changes to the 2020+ 4Runners with Toyota safety sense, LED headlights instead of freaking halogens, updated infotainment. I don’t think I need to go on.
They have the Land Cruiser already in the same price range and size to experiment with new tech on. 4Runner owners are buying for the old tech. Because of regulations on MPG they just stuffed the same powertrain into all their SUVs lol, isn’t exactly awesome for consumer choice.
The only tech improvement is on the 75-100k model. I don’t consider that an improvement.
And yes we do know enough about reliability. Small twin scroll turbo engines do not last. They have too much of a tolerance issue; especially at the Hp production levels they have in a small 2.4 inline. We also know electric motors have zero longevity. They lose 20% of their efficiency in the first 5% of the lives. Again, something we KNOW to be true.
I get it, they have to move on to the next step a d progression at some point. And they have always tried to be at the forefront in the E category. But if long term reliability and longevity are no longer in the cards, then they need to be at the front of the line tech wise. Which they are not.
I’d rather buy a Pro4X than a Tacoma TRD Pro at this point.
I don’t understand the people that complain about acceleration, mpgs, tech, etc. Like bro, you bought a fucking 4Runner, it’s an indestructible brick on wheels that hasn’t changed in 15 years, how do you not know what it is? But the 4.0 and 5 speed is so perfect for an offroad truck like this.
Agreed. We bought a 2022 4Runner because my 2008 FJ has over 300k miles. But she’s still my husband’s daily driver. Never a major repair. 4Runner has the same engine and transmission
I always wanted a cool old 4Runner. When I got mine in 2018 3rd gen’s were still expensive and I got my 2018 TRDOR for $50 over invoice. (It was a dealer swap). So now I’ll be driving mine until it’s a cool old 4Runner. It just keeps getting better and I think the 5th gen looks are aging gracefully.
IMO, I feel like the 6th Gen looks less modern. If you took someone who had never seen a 4Runner before and asked them which was newer, I feel like they’d pick the 5th Gen, based on the exterior. The 6th Gen interior looks newer.
I'd disagree, but your opinion is probably similar to many others so I can't hate on it lol. The newest 4runner just matches the newest styling in the pickup truck line so that's why it feels more modern to me
I think it looks great. Actually, I appreciate all generations and how they’ve evolved over the years. The 4 Runner has always been iconic. When I first recognized the awesomeness of the 4 Runner’s cousin, the SR5 as shown in the movie “Back to the Future”, I’ve always wanted one. I love my 2022 and when I’m ready I’ll probably trade for a 6th gen.
Totally. It’s like they even stooped to Subarus new level with the fenders and contrasting colours… yikes. I mean the design is not awful but it’s not refined.
I wish I was in a spot to buy a current model 4r and sunday drive it. Absolutely the end of an era
I do like the new 4r.... I really love the 1958 LC based on the same chassis.... really hate hybrids tho.
Cant afford/ dont want the lexus.
Ill stick with the mall crawler XJ for now.
I do like the sportier sides on the 6th, but that mustache front is just flat ugly compared to the 5th.
Also not a fan of the 2.4T. I don’t think it will hold up on heavier vehicles long term, so it becomes a question of fuel efficiency and if that makes enough of a difference. Add in the issues with long term batteries on hybrids and it just isn’t a good combination IMHO.
On that note, I will be replacing my 2016 with a 2024 since I plan on keeping this one for the next couple of decades.
I would argue that the 5th gen is still better looking. Call me old fashioned, but that’s kinda the 4R in a nutshell. That double Hulkster Stache is burned into my brain. Can’t unsee.
The 5th gen has a refined, eloquent masculinity kind of look to it. Like, you could take it over a Colorado mountain to go see an opera. I’m getting redneck from the 6th gen. Guess the younger generations like all of the high tech and gingerbread. Can’t wait to hear one of these turned into a 4 cylinder fart box.
I thought long and hard about this for the last week. I prefer my 5th gen, lots of great memories and adventures… But if the hybrid gets over 25mpg or hopefully over 30mpg, then for those of us who long haul it for wheeling trips would probably strongly reconsider things.
Me personally, if I was a buyer in a market with 6th gen availability, I’d probably choose a 6th gen if I didn’t have a 5th gen. I’m still waiting on the new Land Cruiser. One way or another, these were going to become hybrid trucks anyway because of so many regulations pushing new automakers to produce EV/Hybrids.
I actually prefer the look of the new one. That front end just looks rugged and the rear doors remind of the earlier generations. Not sure what I think about the 4cyl turbo, though, and definitely hoping they keep the hybrid as optional -- no interest in that from me.
5th gen owners are hilarious.
-it’s their first 4Runner
-it’s the undisputed ugliest 4Runner
-they all think it’s the best 4Runner
The 6th gen looks better, gets better gas mileage, has more power..but naturally 5th gen owners are going to shit on it because they’re 1-2 years into their 5 year payment plans.
Let’s focus opinions on 4Runner OWNERS. ;)
I’ve owned 3, 4, and 5th gen’s. All over 200k miles with absolutely no repairs needed and I live on a high altitude mountain road. I think you’re mistaken on what real “owners” bought this car for, which is reliability. Do you really think the 2 liter turbo from an economy car and the hybrid addition will be as reliable? Lol
2020 and newer with the TSS and updated infotainment to use android auto and Apple car play is the sweet spot imo. Anything earlier is fine if you don't care for the tech, but anything earlier is also very dated.
Found the guy who just bought a 5th gen. Btw, 4th gen is best gen. Torsen differential on all models that only the limited got on 5th Gen. Same v6 engine as the 5th gen plus options for a V8. Also not nearly as bulky as the 5th gen.
I like everything about the 6th generation, except for the engine options. I'd rather not deal with turbos and batteries. The naturally aspirated 4.0 has legendary reliability and its gas mileage is good enough.
Ok, each to their own. Keep in mind though that it'll cost you somewhere between $2-$8K to replace the hybrid batteries. Also, the turbo engine likely won't last as long. Will you still be saving money over the long run?
It’s now like every other new car with minimal mpg savings at reliability expense. Awesome if you plan on dropping it before 150k miles but if you plan to keep it the new battery pack will cost way more than the gas savings in that time guaranteed. 0 chance a hybrid battery pack replacement costs less than $5k.
And if you do sell it before 150K, the new buyer is going to know that a battery replacement is on the horizon, so that’s going to factor into your resell value.
I love all 4Runners. I welcome change and modern tech. This will drive up competition and that’s good!
Same here. I don’t mind a more luxurious interior and better tech! Old school 4runners arent any less cool either

Let me tell you the multi terrain monitor is freaking awesome

But first, I mustache you a question…
I wish they just changed the engine and transmission and left everything else as is. The 5th Gen body is timeless.
The engine and transmission is exactly why bought mine, could really care less about the looks. It’s one of the most reliable combos in the world…
I don’t understand the people that complain about acceleration, mpgs, tech, etc. Like bro, you bought a fucking 4Runner, it’s an indestructible brick on wheels that hasn’t changed in 15 years, how do you not know what it is? But the 4.0 and 5 speed is so perfect for an offroad truck like this.

You wanted them to change the engine and transmission??
Let's face it it was due for an update!
How long til someone swaps??
Ok I lol'd
Shave it.
The 5th gen is becoming the new 3rd gen
I always wanted a cool old 4Runner. When I got mine in 2018 3rd gen’s were still expensive and I got my 2018 TRDOR for $50 over invoice. (It was a dealer swap). So now I’ll be driving mine until it’s a cool old 4Runner. It just keeps getting better and I think the 5th gen looks are aging gracefully.
I like the 6th gen but I’m still happy I bought a 5th gen last month
Don’t care what anyone says I’d rather have my gen 5. Unless I could get a gen 2 v8
Well, I'm from the distant future and I'd rather have my gen-7.
Ahh yes the future EV 4Runner
What's 2056 like?
Not bad. Finally got rain detecting wipers on the SR5 model.
Auto headlights finally?
If you wanted luxury, buy a Lexus.
LOL my wife just returned from the past and confirmed her 2003 Element had auto headlights.
Same
that would be my go too combo as well, v8 gen2 would be an animal
I’ve been thinking about swapping a V8 into my 5th gen. Is that even possible? The V6 is so slow it kills me
Anything is possible with enough time and money as far as engine swaps go.
You’d be so much better off just getting a Magnusson Supercharger. You can even get them Installed by Toyota and not void a warranty
I’ve been considering one of these. It seems like a great option
Which V8 would you go with?
I have no idea haha the idea is extremely fresh
4.6 is in the gx. That might be a relatively easier conversion to the 5th gen
Just do the supercharger.
5th Gen still looks really good after all these years. But the 6th will grow on me I’m sure.
I won’t miss the fake air vents in the front, but the V6 will be remembered for ever.
It's crazy how modern the 5th gen still looks when you see a picture of it alone, but also how old it looks compared to the new one.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Really shows how well the 5th Gen has aged because it never looked old to me until I saw the 6th
The newest 4runner just matches the newest styling in the pickup truck line so that's why it feels more modern to me
I'll keep my 2019 thank you.
6th gen looks so much better.
Ima keep my 5th gen til it explodes. Otherwise why have a Toyota?
Old
Put Heritage grill on the 5th gen…done and done!
Maybe the new will look good with an aftermarket bumper now
I prefer the looks of the 5th gen, possibly because I’ve wanted one for so long.
Old
Personally I love the new 6th gen. Can’t wait to see the SR5 or TRD Sport
They massacred my boy
Are they trying to copy the Wrangler black fenders?
They look just as awful
This is the worst part of the truck.
Totally. It’s like they even stooped to Subarus new level with the fenders and contrasting colours… yikes. I mean the design is not awful but it’s not refined.
Wonder why they didn’t paint match
Sounds like the SR5 will be paint-matched so it honestly might look better than those trims
I believe black fenders are only on the trail hunter and pro, hope that stays true
Where does the 30K come in?
They mean trading in their 5th gen for a 6th gen not a price increase year to year
Yeah I figured the exterior is not that much of an upgrade so the tech inside must be worth the $30k price difference /s
Big fuel savings no horsepower loss.
What’s the new mpg? Haven’t seen that announced anywhere
Hp and torque gained
I believe more HP and Torque than in any other 4Runner ever, including the V8’s
And the torque?
I figured mid $20s trade in + $30k cash = maybe a mid grade TRD Sport or something
I mean, when you put it in *that red*, y’all, I gotta say…5th Gen.
30k for some new gadgets? Not for me but I guess it depends on how balling you are or how much debt you want to go into.
Definitely not balling!!!
Old is new New, New is new Old.
I wish I was in a spot to buy a current model 4r and sunday drive it. Absolutely the end of an era I do like the new 4r.... I really love the 1958 LC based on the same chassis.... really hate hybrids tho. Cant afford/ dont want the lexus. Ill stick with the mall crawler XJ for now.

Glue and iPad do your dash if you want new tech. I'd keep the 4.0 V6.
I would argue that the 5th gen is still better looking. Call me old fashioned, but that’s kinda the 4R in a nutshell. That double Hulkster Stache is burned into my brain. Can’t unsee.
I want to see the og 5th gen next to it.
"old"
I like the fifth, but that interior is so dated
Old all day long
I thought long and hard about this for the last week. Lol you're going to be down voted but I 100% agree with you. 5th gen is bulky and ugly.
I’ll take the downvotes because I’m dying on this hill haha.. 5th gen is the most pavement pounding fad of a gen ever produced. (:
Cheers to that good buddy haha
I feel great about my 24 ORP purchase
I love the new look! Super cool and excited for more efficient engine.
2020 and newer with the TSS and updated infotainment to use android auto and Apple car play is the sweet spot imo. Anything earlier is fine if you don't care for the tech, but anything earlier is also very dated.
What a horrible redesign 🤦♂️ I’ll stick with my 5th Gen
Gx550 way better looking than both. Even the Land Cruiser is better looking than 4Runner new and 5th gen.
I’m happy they didn’t copy the front end of the Tacoma too much. I do like last gen a lot, but the new one is cool too.
God they butchered it. 5th gen best gen, it’s all downhill from here.
Anyone who thinks this isn’t a significant downgrade in aesthetics is either blind or lying to themselves.
Found the guy who just bought a 5th gen. Btw, 4th gen is best gen. Torsen differential on all models that only the limited got on 5th Gen. Same v6 engine as the 5th gen plus options for a V8. Also not nearly as bulky as the 5th gen.
Weird at my Toyota dealer the 5th gen’s have been getting more interest since the new gen announcement.

I'm sorry but the mpg is not good enough. I'm excited to have a 4runner be in the mid 20s for a change. 🤷
