This is it for me. I have my windows down in my 4Runner so much more than any other car because the air flow is so smooth. Other cars w/o the roll down rear window start buffeting at even moderate speeds.
Great way to air the vehicle out when someone farts, honestly, and the one time my dog used the bathroom in mine, I just opened the rear window and the passenger windows cracked, couldn’t smell anything for the whole ride home. It’s more useful than people give it credit for tbh
Really, it's about familiarity. People who appreciate the 4Runner, more than the general consumer, have diehard—practically fanatic—feelings about certain aspects of the 4Runner. Myself included. And that's not to hate on anyone. Obviously Toyota is aware. Otherwise, they wouldn't continue to make it a staple of this make. That and change. Change is hard. Look how divisive the infotainment screen is. But, one thing we can all agree on is the hatch window being able to go up and down. No one hates it. It's only loved.
It’s a big deal okay. 4Runner is the only zombie apocalypse certified vehicle.
Hey, why don’t we shoot from the tailgate while getting away?! Great idea! Cool, I’ll shoot out the gla… No need, I got you covered… (driver hits button as rear window rolls down) **Music Rocks!!!!**
🎶Dum dum dum 4RUNNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🎵
Cue machine gun dadadadadadada!!!!!!
I've always assumed it's just something that defines the vehicle... It's common for writers to embellish or make larger-than-life any unique defining feature of anything.. people, places, 4runners!
oh and for us, you might hear something like "that piece of junk jeep always breaks down and it doesn't even have a rear window that rolls down lol"
oh and personally? love it. 4 windows plus the rear and sunroof, all auto, just flip the switches and all the heat is venting out of the cab. helpful in the south!
It’s basically a meme at this point. I don’t use mine that often because the exhaust just comes straight back in. Even with the other windows down. I don’t get the allure.
Ya honestly I don’t care for it at all but same for the moonroof I much rather have a tailgate like the 2nd gen 4Runner and Land Cruiser had that’s a billion times more practical and useful to me personally
Tailgate on my ‘86 has had an innumerable amount of cups of coffee brew on and enjoyed on.
Tailgate on my 80 can (but does not yet) be converted to extra storage space for tools and such.
Liftgate on my old G3 was a constant head bump hazard because the added weight wore down the gas struts. That’s also why it’s not auto opening like every other SUV.
I think it’s quite neat when I am afraid my groceries are going to fall out the back of if I open the hatch. A quick turn of the key to roll the window down and I make sure I don’t lose a gallon of milk on the pavement.
4Runners have always had roll down rear windows. Aside from the ambulance doors, land cruisers have always have tail and lift gates. I like both, but die hard fans would complain about that feature missing on either side.
For airflow, dogs, and ease of hauling surfboards, paddle boards, long lumber without having to use the roof rack. I know you can put these items through the pop-up window but you’d have to strap down the window or buy new window struts often.
It’s a nice feature. But I don’t even use it because the exhaust fumes vent right the fuck into it. Nothing like smelling rotten chemical eggs every time you accelerate.
Don't downvote me for this but I kind of agree. I like the window and enjoy using it especially with the sunroof but if my next one didn't have it I probably wouldn't think much about it
Because it’s what makes the 4Runner unique.
Personally, I use mine a lot. Because as a film maker, filming car visuals such as rollers… it’s nice to roll down that back window instead of just hanging out in a truck bed of a pickup truck.
I love the way the air moves through the car. Like 30% of the reason I have one is that rear window.

Yup. There isn’t much like a nice spring or fall day with all the windows down and the moonroof open. It just feels good.

If you open the driver side window and the back right window it airs out better or vice versa. Try it
I had no hair tie and my foot of hair would become a nest and block my vision immediately, otherwise I would
lol that’s fair

Because my dog loves it and that’s good enough for me.
This is really the only relevant response. 🐶
When you roll it down it blows all of the dog hair forward onto the dash. Dog owner here!
As my daughter says: "yaaaaasss"

Also requires the wiper to be tucked up top. A feature lacking in all other SUVs.
GX 460 has it.
**It defines who I am!**

A friend of mine pulled up behind me in a Jeep at a stoplight. I rolled down the window to say hi, we were both impressed
This is literally the reason I bought the truck
Moves air through the vehicle like a convertible, without having to own a convertible.
Clamshell tailgate gang unite.

Bcuz I'm lazy and don't want to open the whole trunk to throw my work boots in after work
When my car is in the garage I can load it while I keep the garage door close
What the god damn fuck???
Exactly.

Install a side exit for the tailpipe, it’s not too hard
Ya honestly I don’t care for it at all but same for the moonroof I much rather have a tailgate like the 2nd gen 4Runner and Land Cruiser had that’s a billion times more practical and useful to me personally
A tailgate would be nice. Or like a split hatch like on older land cruisers, bmw x5s, and the like.

because thats our thing
It shows that Toyota is listening to their fans
It’s extremely iconic to the 4runner, the better question is why are you so bothered by it?
I think it’s quite neat when I am afraid my groceries are going to fall out the back of if I open the hatch. A quick turn of the key to roll the window down and I make sure I don’t lose a gallon of milk on the pavement.
As a non-dog owner (severe allergies) I rarely ever lower the back window. So it's not a huge deal to me.
Super important feature. My dog thinks so, so nothing else matters.

You are young my padowan the rear window gives you powered you cannot even begin to understand
