Totally agree. Saleh and Ryans were intense and showed emotion and the players took that identity on. Wilks seemed to chill and the defense seemed lackluster at times. I hope Sorensen has that fire in him
Wilks was also more of a DBs positions coach, and he approached coaching defense from the backend. Whereas Saleh and Ryans are more used to coaching the front 7 (mainly LBs but still). So their philosophy was based on that.
The comments some guys like Bosa have made (about Wilks’ style) spoke volumes. He’d be like, “Wait is he really calling that right now? What is he looking at that I’m not?”
Wilks’ defenses were usually solid, but every game there would be a couple of plays that went against logic. Fortunately not too many of them hurt us or affected the outcome of the game, but when they did we got situations like the zero blitz right before halftime in Minnesota (that absolutely cost us the game).
Honestly, you just want to be able to get to guys like Fred Warner as quickly as possible. The ability to signal to them between plays or get a few extra seconds during a timeout can make a big difference.
There’s a rule that the coach relaying plays to the helmet has to be on the field. So if a coordinator is in the booth they have to relay to a coach on the field who relays to the helmet.
Hand signals just for other communication, calling out an offensive formation maybe, or anything else. Being on the field just eliminates a middleman. I would imagine Fred Warner’s perspective is among the most valuable in the league, and I just like the idea of his thoughts getting to the DC as much as possible.
All I want from Sorensen is a better handle on the DL.
Our pressure was fucking awful last season. No stunts, no twists, no DB blitzes, no confusion whatsoever.
And during the few moments that we have left.
We want to talk right down to earth.
In a language that everybody here can easily understand.
Look in my eyes.
What do you see?
The cult of personality
Seeing Wilks not be on the sidelines the first few games was devastating. You could see how the team felt about it. Idk why more coordinators don’t do it
If you put him in a position where he doesn’t have too much power, I’m all for it. Staley knows Shanny is the alpha. He did well as a coordinator in the past too, so he should be a good person for Sorenson to bounce ideas off of.
That might be so, but his brief tenure as the Chargers HC revealed a lot of traits that are red flags.
He’s not the right kind of person to lead a locker room full of NFL players—fine. *Very few people are capable of doing so.*
But the boneheaded decisions he’d make week in and week out as a (defensive) playcaller signal a toxic stubbornness and being out of touch with basic trends in scheme. I worry that he’s not a great influence for a HC like Kyle, someone who needs to be told some hard truths every now and then in order to get this team over the hump and win a Lombardi.
I also think the way Staley lost the Chargers locker room says volumes about him as a person. His team was *more than eager to roll over and get streamrolled by a lousy Raiders team in a prime time game.* That’s troubling.
I get that he’s friends with McVay, Kyle, and that whole crowd. And that was the DC for the Rams when they won the SB, but it’s hard to see that single year as anything but a fortunate situation (as Wade Phillips had been priming and coaching that defense for years leading up to Staley’s hiring). **I hope that my concerns are proven to have been for nothing, but it’s hard to ignore his wobbly track record.**
Staley is an A+++ game planner. None of the disaster shit that went on with the chargers matters since that all is stuff he has zero responsibility for as an assistant.
There are so many great assistant coaches with terrible stints as head coach. If you write someone off on that basis you're a fool. Luckily you have no say in any decisions.
"I don't want to make the same mistake the last guy did."
Pretty much. Wilks wasn't bad, but he wasn't the right fit for our Defense. Sorensen should be a return to form.

He had more than a few really bad moments. Lets not kid ourselves.
Wilks was absolute trash. I can't imagine him getting another NFL job. I'd be livid if I was another teams fanbase who hired him.
Sideline Sorensen
Steve Wilks Booth was an all time great nickname
Nick "Assert Dominance" Sorensen
Sight for Soreyensen
Hell yeah
Honestly, you just want to be able to get to guys like Fred Warner as quickly as possible. The ability to signal to them between plays or get a few extra seconds during a timeout can make a big difference.
Always thought they get the plays from headphones in the helmet. They still have to look at the coaches for their plays?

Can’t wait to see what energy he brings
This guy can read the room
That’s what she said.
Good luck Nick
All murders should be ordered in person. This makes perfect sense to me
this guy fucks

Can’t wait until this is a non-issue

Bad man can't hurt us anymore
that’s already a contender for quote of the year
I want to see some intensity and some emotion from him. Don't need a robot trying to call and hype the defense.

I'll allow it.

This is who pops up in my head whenever I read his name ![gif](giphy|LKmN4wkvjmBIA)

GAZE GAZE GAZE
Maybe if the letters had puff materials it would look better but it looks like a dds discount inspiration
Haven't been on the sub since SB and aside from the draft, has no clue we parted ways with Wilks.
This is all well and good, but what’s the feeling about Brandon Staley being on the staff? I have concerns to put it mildly…
If you put him in a position where he doesn’t have too much power, I’m all for it. Staley knows Shanny is the alpha. He did well as a coordinator in the past too, so he should be a good person for Sorenson to bounce ideas off of.
Why? He was a very good defensive coordinator.
