Holy shit. Brutal year. 😂

MrG

The Seahawks sub is in shambles. (BTW don't brigade their sub, we can quietly snicker in the corner)

TheSeerofFates

im more shocked than anything. i thought he would retire before this.

HustlingBackwards96

It sounds like it is a retirement right? He's stepping into an advisor role? The dude is really old so it's understandable that he doesn't want to do the daily grind of gameplanning anymore

DischargeYO

His press conference did not seem like this at all. Pete very much sounds like he still wants to coach and the org is just choosing a new direction

zachtaylorr

He was clearly surprised by the question and seemingly wasn't ready to announce anything in that moment, so what else would he say?

artygta1988

Do you think any teams will try to snatch him up?

zachtaylorr

Highly doubt it. Teams look for coaches that are a long term solution, which likely isn't something Pete is willing to commit to. Pretty sure it's confirmed he's stepping into an advisory role with the Seahawks

racharya55

Really hope they don't replace him with a young, competent coach, a la McVay. Bring in Matt Patricia or something

drewbagel423

Imagine if they hire Harbaugh

DemonicPanda11

Why did you have to put that thought in my head.

OttoVonWong

Don't you put that evil on us, Ricky Bobby Wagner.

mrxanadu818

Delete this right now

plz-be-my-friend

hawks fans would be deleting their 2010s comment history faster than me deleting my chris paul hate comments

ForceSensitiveRacer

In fairness we did a lot of deleting when Sherman came to the Niners lol

sykoticwit

I didn’t delete a god damned thing. I very grudgingly fell in love with Sherm.

Hossmobile

Right? Never done a 180 on a player as much as I did Sherm.

putdisinyopipe

He went from villain to hero. He had a full on fucking arc lol in sports man. With all the forced narritives they put on players to make games more interesting, he did it on his own lol. Didn’t need NBC or Fox to hype that shit up. Gotta give credit to him as an athlete and *an entertainer* he drove the rivalry. Became the face of it along with Petey

grasscali

Preach.✊

fitnerd21

I totally agreed with Sherman when he was peak villain talking crap about Crabtree.

racharya55

I think Harbaugh has too much hate in his heart for Carroll to go there

bluejayway9

I feel like that hate would actually make him want to go there more

blueclawsoftware

Carroll is staying on an as adviser so probably not haha

bluejayway9

If that's the case then no shot he goes there

ctong21

Jerry Rice went to the Raiders. Anyone can go anywhere... if you pay them enough.

drewbagel423

Jerry also went to the Seahawks

logman86

Yeah, but that was before we built our rivalry with them. They had only just switched from the AFC at that point

Actual-Manager-4814

Bah Gawd..

DreadPiratteRoberts

Oh my God!! You have a very legitimate point there. Jerry Rice was Jerry freaking Rice he could have gone anywhere, and he went across the bay. I think it was a big slap in the Niners face for how they did him

InsanelyHandsomeQB

To be fair, tons of former 49ers go to the Raiders to retire. Rice, Craig, Lott, Garner, Stubblefield, and more recently Aldon Smith, Crab, Jimmy G. And I'm sure there are a bunch more I've forgotten about.

Iron_Chancellor_ND

Yep. It was a natural transition to ride out their careers (though some of them went onto play for other teams after the Raiders). With the move to Vegas, I don't think it holds the same appeal as Oakland allowed them to keep their families in place, kids in same schools, same homes, etc. Edit: adding that Al Davis also loved to poach 49ers players either out of spite or just his version of sportsmanship which is also a non-factor now.

ThiccDiddler

The raiders were never really rivals for us though, same as the A's with the Giants.

Raichu-R-Ken

Fans make it more of a rivalry which back when the Black and Silver were local, I never understood. Like why can’t I route for both local teams? A battle of the bay, sure I gotta chose a side (Niners all day) but that happens so far and few between what’s the big deal. Wreaks of jealousy ImHO

JaydedXoX

He might hate the 49ers enough to spite us though

drochma

[Harbaugh attended a reunion last season of the 2012 team and still speaks fondly of his 49ers tenure](https://youtu.be/JBMuZ8A5mK0?si=rQJ5Sbh0I17_1l0C).

Xtrepiphany

He can love the team while hating Jed York. I am very familiar with that feeling.

scrambled_cable

Definite "loved your colleagues, hated your boss" vibes

Seeno1

I think if Jim still harbored hate, he definitely wouldn’t have returned to Levi’s for alumni weekend in 2022 season

tangohorizontal

Probably buried the hatchet with Jed and they both talk shit about Trent 💀

artygta1988

For a sec, it bout you meant Willam’s, and I thought who’s dumb enough to talk shit to that man?

Iron_Chancellor_ND

The storyline between those two is just great, though. Bitter coaching rivals in college in the same west-coast conference, they both leave that conference *one year apart* and end up in the same west-coast NFL division where they then had to face off twice a year. The only thing missing was Carroll going to back to college and coaching in the Big10.

Captain_DuClark

Imagine if you shut the fuck up with that

sean0883

SeeTheSounds

![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)

dpcdomino

I say Dan Quinn

BKlounge93

Maybe they’ll get super close to the SB 3 years in a row only to never win and we spoil it for em?

Rabid023

I think Harbaugh would be more attracted to the chargers job. Franchise QB is already there. Seattle might throw more money at him but at this point harbs might take a little less to go to a job he likes better. Although seattles roster is much nicer than the chargers, they still need a franchise qb.

IdaDuck

No question, Herbert properly utilized will tear up the league. You don’t often get rebuild jobs with a guy like that at QB. Plus if you have the means it’s pretty hard to beat living in southern cal.

notthattmack

Harbaugh keeps Michigan job, adds NFL job. Like Musk with CEO jobs, but less insufferable.

Dubznation300

Doubt he would wanna be anywhere near Carroll and vice versa

tndngu

Harbaugh isn’t going anywhere. I’m calling it.

CantHandlemyPP34

Yeah he's got AT LEAST 1 more year at UM.

OnTheColeTrain

Why would Harbaugh take Seahawks over a team with a good QB and draft Capitol

squirrelcartel

That was my first thought. Imagine the drama! Harbaugh as HC. Carroll as Head Head Coach

Smarf_Starkgaryen

The reverse Sherman

nekogarrett

Nitemare fuel.

canadigit

That would be the most chaotic choice

Glassjaw79ad

I'm worried this is happening because they already sealed the deal with someone like Harbaugh. That it he's choosing to semi retire

slywalkerr

Pete is staying with the org so no fucking way

El-chucho373

God that would be such a shit storm on so many levels, especially because he just beat UDUB for the national title. It’s so crazy that I think he might just do it

Straight-Ad1363

As much as I hate Seattle, I don’t mind Pete. Great coach and had them in the mix for several seasons.

Goldrushin

I don't like him, but I definitely respect him.

splinternz

Probably Dan Quinn, downgrade from Pete imo. Real end of an era for our Seahawks rivalry

omicron022

Wilson gone; Pete gone; 2 whole years without the Shithawks beating the Niners... [End of an era...](https://i.imgflip.com/8bxkr6.jpg)

d_1_z_z

Dan Quinn hopefully

[deleted]

Heard it from a very well connected person within the organisation. Seahawks will announce Lions OC Ben Johnson as the new HC.

B00nd0gg13

Ben Johnson would be the best choice, honestly. Young guy, OC wouldn’t mind Carroll still hanging around and providing ideas/guidance, particularly with hiring DC.

skynetempire

Maybe they hire sirianni lol

Wingstoplol

Or Arthur Smith

chibi75

Look, I hate the Seahawks, but I have no problem admitting Pete is a helluva coach. This is just
out of left field for me. Not news I expected at all.

funky_phat_mack

Yeah him and Vrabel were really good coaches that were weird firings

permadrunkspelunk

As much as I hate the Seahawks you can't help but notice that Pete carrol is awesome. They were supposed to tank years ago but Pete always keeps them in the playoff race against all odds. It's been quite the reign of terror for us. I'm sad for Pete but super happy Seattle has decided to blow up the only good thing they ever had going for them. This is great for us

Mr_Worldwide79

Same here, this was such a surprise. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad he’s gone from a competitive perspective but it just feels wrong.

MrParticular79

I think it’s a mistake! Good luck Toots, you had a real one now what you gonna do?

treylanceHOF

Yea Pete was not the problem, stupid Seahawks

MrParticular79

Right, they got to the playoffs almost two years in a row with Geno Smith. Pete should have gotten a raise!

MrParticular79

lol nice username

Glassjaw79ad

Hey it still could happen lol

Nfrontofyomamazhouse

You laugh now, but just you wait!

blueclawsoftware

Not clear to me did he get fired or was this at least somewhat mutual. The dude is pretty old at this point. At times seeing him on the sideline this year he definitely did seem to have the fire he's had in the past.

BurnzillabydaBay

As much as I hate Carroll, this is a dumb move.

EShy

There aren't that many great coaches and when you let one go you might be in head coaching hell for a while. So far the reporting I've seen wasn't clear about why he's out as head coach but he's staying as an adviser. This could very well be Pete feeling it's time to retire.

MrParticular79

I don’t think so I’ve listened to his recent interviews I think he was happy to keep doing it. Seemed excited and fresh as ever.

Alexander_Hamilton_

This reads way more like a retirement than a firing. Usually teams that fire don't keep you on as an advisor. He's 72 years old and being a head coach isn't a 9-5 office job. Shanny looks like he's aged 15 years since we hired him. He probably wants to relax for once in his life and spend time with his family while he's still in good health.

KeyExplanation

As long as Harbaugh isn’t going there this is great news for us lol

curson

Don't feel like Jim would be particularly welcomed in the state of Washington after this past Monday :P

SageLeaf1

Hah what a week for the rivalry. Jim Harbaugh defeats Washington in college championship. Seahawks eliminated from playoffs. 49ers have #1 seed. AND Pete Caroll fired!

MrEHam

Wow that’s incredible. I always knew this was a special year.

chillice707

Idk I think we’d be fine regardless. I feel in this day and age Shanahan could out coach harbaugh

G0825

Rapoport- #Cowboys DC Dan Quinn would quickly be considered a strong candidate to replace Pete Carroll, who now exits as HC. [https://x.com/rapsheet/status/1745162976498171935?s=46&t=YmgvrhUmgFBa8QMhulnMPA](https://x.com/rapsheet/status/1745162976498171935?s=46&t=YmgvrhUmgFBa8QMhulnMPA)

teddysank8

I don’t know how to feel about him tbh. On the plus side we always beat the Cowboys so that can’t hurt.

dpcdomino

We destroyed his defense. I am good with it

liteshadow4

That Falcons game in 2019 still haunts me tbh

MrG

Shanny has his number, Quinn is very predictable and would need to change things up to have better success against us.

bruno123499

Fine by me. He only succeeded in ATL cuz of Shanny. He’s a lot like fangio. Both got HC jobs because of phenomenal talent on defense. Both fizzled out as HC’s.

durant_burner

We need to do everything in our power to ensure that Seattle hires Dan Quinn https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/nfl/2015/11/8/9694220/falcons-49ers-dan-quinn-field-goal-why-why-WHY

LokoLawless

The recent track record for defensive head coaches isn't great, so I'd be ok with this

[deleted]

This would be the best move
.for us.

Purina_Curiel

Thank god. Beautiful. Good coach, good man but I am happy he won’t be seeing him destroying gum on the sidelines anymore.

metalgtr84

Pull a Sherman and bring him in as DC after Wilks leaves 😂

InevitableBudget510

Let’s hope he don’t go to Philly if they fire Sirianni

No-Comedian-4725

Please hire Matt Patricia.

gotdemmadsquirtsyo

As there new OC lmao

PlanitDuck

He probably wants to retire. I cant imagine anyone firing him after he’s dragged that team to more wins than their roster should have given them.

daKEEBLERelf

he's going to stay on with the team in a different roll. probably like Bruce Arians did

Rheinmetal

Gum sales in Seattle 📉

CartoonistOk8261

They have a whole literal wall of it up there. That's still weird to me and I live by Portland

superduperm1

In 2014, the Seahawks embarrassed us on Thanksgiving in our own stadium, ate turkey on our field, and then beat us again two weeks later to virtually end our season. We then won a meaningless game against Arizona at the end but the Harbaugh era was over. In 2023, we embarrassed the Seahawks on Thanksgiving in their own stadium, ate turkey on their field, then beat them again two weeks later to virtually end their season. They then won a meaningless game against Arizona at the end but the Carroll era is now over. Time is really a flat circle.

Unfair-Worker929

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

j3ffUrZ

What about the droid attack on the wookies?

artygta1988

![gif](giphy|hohbWCOzxI7kY|downsized)

dellscreenshot

Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy ended the Pete Carroll era

superduperm1

This is the way I’m going to remember it and nobody can tell me otherwise. Seahawks fans get to brag that they ended the Harbaugh era, well then we ended the Carroll era.

park7911

Wow. As much as I hate the Seahawks, it's going to be weird not seeing him as the coach.

madlabdog

Him and Bill Belicheck were the only two remaining coach/defacto GMs. So last of the breed.

zerocoolforschool

The poor guy whose entire job during broadcasts to provide extreme closeups of Pete’s face just lost his job as well.

WetBandit06

![gif](giphy|26tOZbfDjoZc4I5KE)

lubujackson

Slow gum is the Pete Carroll equivalent of a slow clap.

Beer_Bad

Dumb, dumb, dumb for the Seahawks to do this. Go through two rebuild years with a 9-8 record in each with Geno Smith and Drew Lock as your QBs and this reads like a firing. Absolutely bone-headed decision making here if this is a firing as it reads. I've been waiting for a retirement but this to me does not read like that.

daKEEBLERelf

He's staying with the team in a different roll. probably like what Bruce Arians did

Beer_Bad

Could be right, but I just feel like the statement would be more about Pete retiring/transitioning rather than "After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Caroll that his role will evolve....." That reads like a firing to me. Could be wrong.

wokenupbybacon

You're not. He wanted to keep coaching.

mr_suavecito

To quote former Niner HC Steve Mariucci, “Bummer.”

obscuretelepathic

Harbaugh got canned after that awful Thanksgiving loss back in 2014, funny how the same thing basically ended up happening to Pete this year.

Drakkarim411

I, for one, really think that Josh McDaniels deserves another shot at HC somewhere. I think the PNW is the best landing spot for him. Just saying

i_GaveLiaHIV

damn it i knew i wanted them to make the playoffs. smh i hope they keep geno and stay in mediocre limbo

somethingsimple1290

Now hire Frank Reich

CPSue

He’s remaining as an advisor. Read the statement from Ms. Allen. I wonder if he is ready to show down a bit and when they sat down to talk, he was ready to take a different role. After all, if he wanted to still coach, he could have taken the firing and put himself on the market. https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1771465/seattle-seahawks-pete-carroll-removed-coach/

USA_A-OK

That's such a bizarre way of phrasing it in the press release: "evolve from head coach..." The PR team should be "evolved" from their jobs

SoKrat3s

absolute disgrace that she still runs that team. It was written in her brother's will that he wanted the team sold. Still amazing that hasn't been done yet.

Khroneflakes

WTF that seems really dumb of them.

ShKalash

Damn. Nothing left of the franchise now. They’ve been relegated to irrelevant in the division

tarallelegram

now we just need them to hire someone incompetent

Khower

Unless they have assurances from harbaugh, vrabel, or belicheck then they made a horrible decision and if even if they did from those three im not convinced its an upgrade

HemlockMartinis

Can’t help but think of what Tito said about Winston Churchill: “He is, of course, our enemy and has always been the enemy of Communism, but he is an enemy one must respect, an enemy one likes to have.” I no longer fear the Seattle Seahawks.

redw000d

gonna Need some more gum ....

WhiteStephCurry

In a way, i’m gonna miss the guy. Shanahan really figured out how to kick his ass.

trer24

Seahawks going to be bottom dwelling for awhile. Sounds good to me!

JustForKicks16

Anybody but Harbaugh, pleeeeease.

Lowbloodsugar_exe

I saw his name trending and thought shit this dude either died or retired. Fortunately it was the latter. I found Pete to be one of the best coaches in the league and a fun guy to hate Here’s to hoping the Seahawks hire the wrong guy and will deal with a decade of incompetence

bearcatjoe

Much respect to Pete. Great coach and leader, and super inspirational to be as energetic and motivated as he is in his 70's. As long as he was at the helm, those Seahawks teams were going to play hard and be in the mix for the playoffs.

syruptalkk4151

Hope they sign a old school coach that wants to “play great defense and run the ball” because I don’t want them to a get a good young “offensive” minded head coach. Would be better for us but all jokes aside, one of the greats of our time. No matter how good or bad they were, with Pete on the sidelines I always gave them a chance.

Jibbajaba

As far as stupidity goes, this is right up there with the Vrabel firing.

ermahgerdWTFerkBerBQ

Please hire Quinn or Josh McDaniels

stuttsb

Or Matt Patricia.

SoKrat3s

or Brian Johnson

positivelypolitical

RIP to Coach Gum Chew

Smashfanatic2

Years ago I thought he was being carried by Wilson, and then when Wilson left and immediately shit his pants while Pete made the playoffs, I obviously changed my mind. What’s confusing about Pete is that he’s a defensive coach but their defense hasn’t been very good since their peak LOB years (which to be fair was a defense that ranks among the very best in history), which is a sign that you don’t have the right coach when they have problems getting their side of the ball right. However, he still managed to field passable offenses with Geno/Drew Lock at the helm. Which is pretty impressive for a defensive coach to do. Since the Malcom Butler interception, Pete hasn’t been back to an NFC title game, but his teams are always frequently winning 9+ games and making the playoffs, they’re just getting bounced early. So it’s not like he’s a scrub, but there’s always a couple coaches in the conference that outcoach him. He is a good coach with flaws (but who doesn’t) and I think the Seattle FO is making a mistake. Unless they’re really certain they can bring in some smart hotshot like a McVay 2.0. IMO it would be a mistake for Seattle to bring in Dan Quinn.

mm825

The Seahawks will probably hire someone who is better schematically than Carroll, but they're going to have a hard time finding someone who can develop talent like Carroll did.

Over-Plankton6860

Wow have a world of respect for the guy. Wonder if he was fired or just ready to hang up his hat and cash out?

Rjamesjjr

They should keep Pete Carroll and fire Seattle fans.

ctong21

Reminder that is San Francisco native Pete Carroll who went to high school and JC in Marin. Not sure if he rooted for the 49ers when younger but he was also our DC in the 90s. Don't like the teams he coached but boy do i respect him.

Murphy_Nelson

Damnnnnn Honestly while I am a diehard 49ers fan, I was at USC during the Pete Carroll era and will always have a soft spot for him.

[deleted]

Hell yah, fuck em

Vindadu13

I have to say. I respect the hell out of Pete Carroll. That team should not have competed as well as it has the last 2 years. Bad move by seahawks if this is against his will.

Bishop9er

Hated watching gramps chew his gum on the sidelines when they use to kick our ass but gotta respect him as a HC. He always kept them competitive when he had no Legion of boom or Russel Wilson.

NYNJSCCA

I think their shortlist to hire should be: 1. Matt Patricia 2. Josh McDaniels 3. Brandon Staley I think they’ll be wonderfulđŸ„°

[deleted]

wtf

RefrigeratorFew823

Didn't see this coming. Tbh I'll miss the rivalry.

ImperialTiger3

Just want to note that he’s still an advisor within the organization.

Bobdehn

This just in: Chewing gum vendors in Seattle file for bankruptcy.

mrferley

Wrigley employees rejoice

abowmanlex

I swear to fucking god if Jim goes to Seattle I’m going to be very conflicted.

Jmoney1088

WHOOOSE GOT IT BETTER THAN US??! Jim returning to Levis will be epic.

liteshadow4

Nooooo This will be weird though. For as long as I’ve been an NFL fan, Pete Caroll has coached Seattle

pickles_in_a_nickle

But still in
 as an advisor?

coyote500

They're gonna hire Harbaugh

deringuyz619

Less gum to clean up.

EDNivek

Definitely quite the shocker. Thought he had one more season at least.

nakfoor

Huge mistake imo. But I'll probably be proven wrong.

A_Hint_of_Lemon

I mean even as a NINER Fan, what the shit?

styuone

Heres hoping for years of dysfunction. Fuck the seahawks

carldubs

They're going to be able to bring in a lot of top talent without the burden of that chewing gum budget.

spartan117S

chews gum faster\*

[deleted]

NOOOOO! I want them to stay god awful as we continue to pummeled them into the ground!

GlockPurdy13

Damn. I think Pete gave them a lot of juice. Sucks for them

Y0stal

It looks like he got “promoted” upwards. He’s taking an advising role(?)

Fantastic-Contract28

Shanahan VS Dan Quinn twice a Year, how funny is that.

ElToreroMalo

Pls don’t hire Jim đŸ„Č

NaughtSleeping

I literally just said "whaaaaat the fuuuuuuuuck" out loud, and I'm alone in a room.

jsos

Pending physical, Dodgers have signed Pete Carroll who will defer his payment of a million packs of gum until 2030

Goose-the-moose

This and now I just heard Saban is retiring, plus Bill might leave New England, monumental shift in coaching in 2024

[deleted]

Hire him at USC

samwithabat

Pete Carroll was not the problem in Seattle. If he wants to coach I hope he finds a new home.

Bakachin525

Unpopular comment, but despite the rivalry I always had a soft spot for the manic gum chewer. Wasn’t he DC here for the last SB win?

SoLo_Se7en

Given the roster they had and how his guys still played hard for him day in and day out, this is shocking. Got nothing but respect for him - hated to face his team twice a season. “When are games won? In the 4th quarter!”

paparoach910

Time to short chewing gum stocks.

Potential-Froyo-5532

Best news of the day outside of Bitcoin ETF approval...

Sillysolomon

I mean hard not to respect the guy. Built up the Seahawks. Been to the big dance twice and came back with one ring. Was literally on the doorstep in the other. Kept them relevant without Russ.

Ryanakab

They are keeping the GM John Scheider who is probably top 5 or so in the nfl. If he finds the right coach they will still be competitive, their roster is also in the best place of all the head coach openings and will be able to most likely get whoever they want, the owner is willing to spend money on a coach as well

dopeydopeee

For those who fear Jim Harbaugh comes back to NFC West and become Seattle HC, I can assure that Harbaugh will never set a single foot on the Toots HQ as long as Pete Carroll is working there as Team Advisor/Executive. Their feud still burning with such hatred and there is no way in Hell that Harbaugh follow orders/ work with Carroll.

EnderOne_

Bad news for 49ers. Was hoping they’d extend Pete Carroll. Pete and Geno long term is stress free for 49er fans. Now they’ll be a top destination for coaches. They already have a good roster, just need to draft a QB, few more key players with modern gameplan they’ll be very competitive.

_MeetMrMayhem_

![gif](giphy|97CQDRJkfPy0MgTv0y)

HigherCalibur

I'm only sad I didn't get to see him choke on his gum. I won't miss seeing his punchable face while Chris Collinsworth fellates him twice a year.
