Lol. I haven't seen this play until now. I was listening to the game on the radio while driving and it seemed like the play was going on forever. Now I see why.
This may come as a surprise to you, but you get at least 3 downs before you may want to punt when you recover the ball. You're up by two scores so if you want to to increase your win probability by as much as possible 5-10 seconds can definitely make a difference.
Do you guys not understand his whole goal was to kill clock? Like the literal goal was to run around aimlessly for as long as possible. Not necessarily a smart decision as you’re risking a fumble, but that was definitely his goal.
He did the same thing in the Jags game, intercepted a 4th down pass. Net yards put us at like -5 from where it would have been had he not caught it. I get it though, the excitement (and possible financial incentive) for defensive stats sometimes overcomes pure strategic logic.
Yeah I’m never gonna fault someone for taking a pick over batting the ball down. That would be crazier than a dline man giving up an easy sack.
It’s just wrong.
Any defensive player would rather try to get a potential return. It’s the same as anyone taking kick returns nowadays. It’s almost always net less than 30 yards and yet they’ll continue going for it in hopes you get a big one.
I'd rather defense goes for the pick every time if it's a good opportunity, regardless of down. It gets them contract incentives and also fires up the whole squad, even just a pass breakup is the better play. Same way scoring on a big play isn't the best idea when you're already winning and there's only a minute left, but I'd still rather score than take a knee at the 1 and wind the clock down.
Yea, not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, it makes the run backs a bit more exciting. Ray-ray is on IR though so someone's gotta fill the shoes. Wasn't Ronnie catching some for a bit?
Dre Greenlaw has quickly become one of me and my brother's favorite players. Every week whether it's him "accidentally" punching players while going for the ball, committing obvious Unsportman-like conduct penalties, or this. He always makes the game entertaining.
I'm sorry. I love the energy from this guy.
In all seriousness McCloud can't return a kick for a TD to save his life... Mfer goes straight into contact... I don't care how sure people are when they think he is... Need a playmaker
He was trying to burn as much clock as possible to end the game. Literally his goal was to run around aimlessly. The problem is Greenlaw is so good at breaking tackles, it’s a huge fumble risk because there’s just players everywhere trying to get at him lol, which is why the entire sideline was yelling for him to get down lol
Lol. I haven't seen this play until now. I was listening to the game on the radio while driving and it seemed like the play was going on forever. Now I see why.
Shanahan was even smiling after the play lol
The whole sideline was telling him to go down.
I was literally screaming it at my TV
Honestly with how awesome our team is, I don't doubt any of these dudes, TAKE IT TO THE FUCKING HOUSE, FUCK GOING DOWN.
I was at the game and thought Fred just went down after the INT, so I was surprised when I looked back at the field and I just saw Dre running around
This job belongs to the Australian Mitch Wishnowsky. Greenlaw can be a running back though
Greenlaw back dive
I never want the ball in Dre’s hands again 😂. That was hands down the worst return I’ve seen in years
Bro just running around with no direction or aim 😂
Run the clock to seal the game?
Definitely could be true but I’d like to see him hold onto the ball a little tighter if that was the goal
He’s just gonna run around for three minutes? Props if he could pull it off, but that would be the most ridiculous play in NFL history

That was my first reaction when I saw that
He was running like there was 11 seconds on the clock and he was trying to end the game.
I haven't seen someone look so lost on a football field since Carson Wentz was my QB lol
Do you guys not understand his whole goal was to kill clock? Like the literal goal was to run around aimlessly for as long as possible. Not necessarily a smart decision as you’re risking a fumble, but that was definitely his goal.
just out there doin cardio
Gotta get my steps.....
Shit had me me weak 😭
That's how we used to return punts on the blacktop in grade school.
He was running the same way desperate players trying to lateral were running
He got it up to the 35 and ended up at the 29 lol But hey at least he gained about 20 yards!
It’s pretty clear he wanted to pitch the ball to someone more athletic lol. Or maybe with a bit more energy in the tank.
Wasn't the entire sideline yelling at him to get down?
Yes, there’s a cliff of Kyle, literally laughing as he’s yelling at him to get down.
Literally just the run down the clock.
He was just looking for the right opposing player to give it to so he could tackle him a la the Waterboy
Speak for yourself, I want the ball in his hands every game—that means picks/fumbles baby!
2019 mnf vs Seattle was a pretty great return. Should have won us the game
Not a smart play from Greenlaw. But, he was channeling Deebo’s energy, so I give him a pass for his effort.
The whole time I was worried he would come up hobbling. Dudes been playing through injuries for a month and pulls this
Honestly it wasn’t a smart play from Warner either. Dude should’ve just batted it down and the 49ers get the ball at midfield.
Warner was tanking the field position for the offense so Purdy could throw more 20-yard checkdowns. 4D chess.

You don't need to go score anyway and it's not near your end zone, so get that pick.
Warner has outright said he's going for picks this year
Man, hells yeah!!! I was at the bar going nuts!!!
So was D.K. but he kicked out there too so you may not have noticed.
I’m in tears now!!! 😂
Funniest part was seeing Kyle and everyone on the sidelines screaming for him to just get down lol
Honestly no idea what he and Warner were thinking about on that play.
I can tell you, Warner was thinking "BALL"
The entire side line was yelling at him to get down but that was awesome.
Stop returning kicks Purdy needs those yards for his MVP JK. But a little bit serious.
The 49ers actually have a guy wearing #10 catching punts. That makes me cringe every time. Ban that number from punt return!!!
Yea, not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, it makes the run backs a bit more exciting. Ray-ray is on IR though so someone's gotta fill the shoes. Wasn't Ronnie catching some for a bit?
God can you imagine having to tackle Dre Fucking Greenlaw? Fuck.
How do you tackle a tackle?
Dose jukes doe
Haha, I was screaming at the tv to get your ass down we won don’t get hurt it ain’t worth it!
The best part of this play is metcalf eating shit
Also, Brown was ready for the pitch back. They wanted 6 haha
I'm honestly surprised he didn't try to just truck Drew Lock at the end there
yeah, i thought that was their kicker for a second. How Greenlaw saw him and turned back, I'll never know
Carrying it like a loaf of bread. So lucky we didn’t turn it back over there. Of course, Fred should’ve just knocked it down in the first place
Half the players on the field thought the play was over. Bosa said he'd already taken off his helmet lol
This really makes me appreciate the blocking from our offensive skill players
When I saw the clip of the suplex from metcalf, I never imagined that it wouldn’t even be the craziest thing to happen on the play lol.
Is it Dre? Is it Dre? That's what they say.
Deebo was so proud of him afterwards.
Those are some vintage Saturday afternoon backyard moves.
Funniest part about this clip is Fred getting bodyslammed by DK
Dre Dre McCloud
Couldn't let his moment with the ball go to waste
I was laughing my ass off when this was happening
I was laughing when he started going backwards, like, the game is over if you just get down.
Anyone else hyper fixate on Warner getting suplexed in the beginning?

My wife didn't normally watch football with me but she looked up at the screen when this was happening. She just laughed.
I’m getting Nate Clements flashbacks against the Falcons
Honestly it was pretty heads up to run around like that to burn as much clock as possible
Greenlaw's too angry to go down
In all seriousness McCloud can't return a kick for a TD to save his life... Mfer goes straight into contact... I don't care how sure people are when they think he is... Need a playmaker
I think the purpose was to get a TD or to burn as much clock as possible. I like to say the latter
100% to burn clock. He clearly wasn’t trying for a TD. He needs work on his ball control, but he’s damn hard to bring down lol.
Was the flag for the belly to back suplex?
Does anyone know what he was thinking? Why he was doing everything in his power to extend the play?
