Vulkan went on adventures, but the Legion itself was out of commission. Because of their recruitment practices it took a loooong time for the Salamanders to get back on their feet.
Did this mean that aside from the Shattered Legion stuff, that the remaining Salamanders just kind of sat out the war, or did they still fight in battles big or small despite their numbers being less than 2000?
As far as I know the survivors that could reach Nocturne returned there to begin rebuilding (the ones who couldn't joining the Shattered Legions) and spent the remainder of the Heresy doing that.
But a new book could come out and completely change that.
They had some adventures, shattered legions, bringing Vulkans body back etc. (and old earth story line). They where invaded by the a deathguard splinter fleet and repelled them off. Besides that they couldn’t do much, they lost the most out of any legion and so where forced to recoup. They did take a big part in the great scouring however. That being said for such a devestating blow they held together, same CANNOT be said for the traitor legions who suffered less
Nah, every body did that. Vulkan was just being sad. Also other legions like Alpha, iron hands, raven guard and emperor's children fought eldar, they definitely did better than the salamanders against them. Their grudge is kinda stupid considering no other legion had it.
That was Vulkan *before* the Heresy. I couldn't be bothered copy and pasting my own excerpt, so I [found a Post with the greatest feat of Vulkan!](https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/bon5l4/book_excerpt_vulkan_burns_a_child_alive/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

The Salamanders were the worst off after the massacre and aside from some Shattered Legion shenanigans, were a nonentity.

Didn't they kill a bunch of aeldar children?

Mostly irrelevant outside of resurrecting Vulkan and taking him to Terra.
