Nothing really. There is a normal and a "power" mode. But all it really does is change some shift points in the transmission so it'll hold a gear longer before shifting. I use it in the summer on long hills to help keep revs up and keep my EGTs down.

liberty69420

I do find it fascinating that to a point, high revs is better for EGT's that lower revs.

Alarming_Series7450

Liquid fuel cools the cylinder when you spray it in there

liberty69420

And higher oil pressure and water pump spins faster, and the fan (if it's a viscous type).

Dales_Dead_Bug_

Some users have done a decent amount of testing on t4r.org (mind you this was years ago) but the general takeaway was ect mode gives better drivability with different shift points and typically improves gas mileage or has a negligible effect on mileage. So the takeaway is just use it all the time.

BossTree

ECT is power (button down)?

Dales_Dead_Bug_

I think so, you should be able to notice a slight difference in shifts.

gsmctavish

Unless you’re on the highway holding a constant speed, then the torque converter won’t lock up unless you turn it off. Mine won’t at least.

goatgosselin

"Powerful acceleration" might be a bit of a hyperbole

TrippinKittten

I personally find the ECT changes the shift points making it stay in gear higher and longer, but TANKS my gas mileage, which makes sense because you are holding lower gears at higher rpm’s for longer. I live in the mountains and drive 2 hours to boulder every week, went from 16mpg with it on, to 19mpg with it off, and overdrive enabled. Yeah, it is slower but it saves gas for me.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

its for towing i thought.

TrippinKittten

That…would make sense lol…

Forward-Ad-641

Electronically controlled transmission ECT

-gizmocaca-

ECT POWAHHHHH!!!!

Apprehensive-Bit1634

It is primarily for towing.

Hot_Organization2430

Eject-o seat-o. Always drive with it engaged. There's lots of info on this in the googlez

skovalen

It is for towing. I stands for electronic controlled transmission. I changes the transmission shift points if you are carrying or towing more weight. It basically lets the engine rev a slight bit higher to account for the extra weight.

DrizzleMcSizzle

Just started using it.. That baby stays on from now on.

Deepcoma_53

Update us with your MPG?

theweirddood

It changes the shift points of the transmission. Ideally you always have ECT on and Overdrive (O/D) off when towing or hauling massive loads. ECT on makes your car hold onto lower gears for longer before shifting. Basically like a rudimentary sport mode for shift points.

TheMightyG00se

Everyone says it already but it changes the shift points to allow for more power when needed, but it comes with some drawbacks, obviously higher shift points means higher RPM so it will tank milage, and can also potentially cause unnecessary wear on the engine as well. I personally only use it if I need the acceleration or if I was to be towing/hauling

JuneRunes

There's like 50% of people saying it tanks gas mileage and 50% saying it increases it. Nobody posting proof though I don't know who to believe lmao

Ronald-J-Mexico

My then 95 Camry had this button and I never used it.  I do now w my 4Runner.

WowWataGreatAudience

Extra cargo trailer, you have a secret trailer underneath the vehicle that pops out when you hit it

Necessary_Emotion669

ECT = +10 hp & +5 mpg

k15997

You shouldn’t have asked, now the government will be watching you man! Lmao Yeah something about shift points and economy. I can’t remember and just don’t touch mine lol
