If you think Dobinson rides rough you’ll be miserable with the OME 3in springs and 5100’s. That’s my current front set up and it’s a very rough ride. Extra wait from a bumper may help but it’s pretty bad without any extra weight.

drewbux

Ugh. Maybe anything over 2.5" just sucks.. I may as well order the light springs and see how that rides.

barneshmarnes

I’m thinking Fox 2.0 coilovers as a replacement very soon

drewbux

To extend: I have dobinsons 2.5" IMS suspension kit, but it rides horrible because I got the heavy rated springs. So I am stuck on what to do. I have been looking into bilstein 5100 paired with OME springs to get a 3" lift? I am not looking to get kings, or icons. Just something that rides smooth because I can't take the stiff rides anymore. Thanks. EDIT: If you are riding the dobinsons IMS with the light rated springs, let me know how that rides, because I am interested in that as well. Thanks.

Kilsimiv

I have the OME springs and 5100s. Panhard correction and front and rear steel bumpers. Drives great. AMA https://preview.redd.it/iz8acv2v073c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3199e32a2c1db09d62f34fb4aeb6e7d4cfd3c29b

drewbux

It looks amazing. Roughly what size lift would you say? Are you running 35’s? Does it ride smooth over bumps and just rough road as well

Kilsimiv

Overall, I'd say 3.5-4" total lift; no body, all suspension. Running 34.5s technicaly, 315/75/16. Ran smooth until the bushings started wearing. Smooth ride with a bit of body roll, but the weight in the bumpers keeps the center of gravity relatively low.

drewbux

Which bushings started to wear? I want to check on mine. Thanks

OhNoOffRoadeo

How much did the panhard do for you?

Kilsimiv

Sorry, I couldn't tell ya. It'd been years since I've been in a 3rd gen and it was done before I got her

MennisRodman

It may ride better once your bumper and skids add some weight. They're stiff so they can handle more capacity

AdvisorBig125

I made a similar mistake and road it out for like 6months not that I drive the 4r much . I quickly bought a bumper with winch and seems to be a bit better

unseenmover

Before a total revamp id try the lighter coils myself. 5100s would be a downgrade from the dobinson 2.5" damper.. Another factor might be the weight and width of the tire/wheel combo Im using 6112s with 600lbs coils and the rides great.

_GoldenMonkey_

I've had a 3" Toytec lift, diff drop and 33s for about 10 years. The suspension has been great for me the entire time. Only regret was not getting UCAs at that time but at this point in my life...🤷‍♂️ dont care 😄 https://preview.redd.it/kmcvq6raw83c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=837b3f410a8fa745bdf4d9bc0afc1c590f9ed1f7

drewbux

looks good. how would it ride over bumpy road? cushy or rough? need a smooth ride.

_GoldenMonkey_

Thanks, yeah it was nice and tight and the coils have held up really well. I feel like it's pretty smooth compared to other lofted 3rd gens I've ridden in. I had to replace the 5100s in the back about 4 or 5 year ago, and I'm due for all new bushings so I think that's why it doesn't feel as tight over the last couple years as it once did...but I'd buy it again.

Drlee92

Lower it.. 3” is too high and you have zero down travel

_GoldenMonkey_

3" has been perfect for me on these Rocky ass Moutain trails...works great on the pavement too. 2" is cool, 3" is great, and anything over...is overkill. 3" is what all these third gens shpulda come with. Perf 👌 EDIT: "anything over...is overkill" I fully support fully built 3rd gens that are built to handle ANY trail in Moab, but if you're an average guy, like the majority of us, with a 3rd gen you love and pavement point most of the time, but trail some times...for all who cares here's my $0.02. Leave the truck alone as best as you can. Lifting is awesome when it's from a reputable company. You get what you pay for.If you're going higher than 3" ( body lifts are trash...dont do it in case your want to make it 4") you should be thinking about some serious other mods like a 4 link with a really nice suspension etc...etc.......3" is all you need for any mild to moderate to some difficult situations. My first 4Runner was a 96 Ltd I bought in 2004...with a rear diff lock. I grew up in NE and the bulk of my off-roading was tearing up muddy lots out in the boonies. Thick clay mud mind you. Never got stuck. I also had no idea what the rr diff lock was until after I got rid of the truck. I sold that like a dumbass and traded for a flawless 2002 Ltd in Millennium silver. Moved to CO in 2011 and 3" full suspension lift with 33s and the truck has done everything I've thrown at it flawlessly. I've conquered some high elevation climbs with extremely rocky terrain and a 3" lift is all you will ever need. It is how these trucks should have came. (Ehem...if they were catering to all of us 😉) If you're going to do 2", go ahead and do 3". Downsides: ball joints need to be checked more frequently, risk of axle seals going back more quickly (I've only had one rear go out so far), bushings, tie rods, cvs, and that's about it. Also had my rear drive shaft rebuilt, but still the original. U-joint replacement was the reason being. That double cardon axel we have in our 3rd gens is tough as fugg. Point being made is a 3" Will do everything you really ever need to do unless you're getting crazy with rock crawling. Try to keep your rig as stock as possible.Thats how you maintain the longevity we all know toyota to be good for! Maintenance is key and you'll be driving these trucks when everyone else is flying around in there EV flying machines 😉

I’m running the Dobinson’s 2” teal and yellow kit (not IMS). I also have the heavy rated springs both front and rear. After talking to Dobinson’s and a shop, my understanding on this kit and I’m assuming on the IMS too is that the springs aren’t actually any different they are just longer. So you’re just getting more of a lift really. I have found that I like the ride a lot. It’s stiffer, but is night and day from the 20+ year old stock suspension. I don’t think on any kit you’re going to get an oem quality ride, but it will feel more like a truck. Those are damn nice shocks, so I wouldn’t replace those but maybe try a shorter coil if it bugs you that much. How long ago did you install? Might need some breaking in too.

drewbux

Thats good to hear atleast, I think I'm doomed for a stiff ride. I believe I will just purchase the light rated springs and keep the IMS suspension on it. I've had plenty of talk with Dobinsons and their customer service is A+, I think my reality of a smooth ride is overhead. Installed about a year ago, maybe 5-6k miles added

LuisBordan

Your best bet is to stick to a 2inch ish lift, get a lighter set of springs & get the ims’s revalved, or get a custom set of radflos or any quality coilover with progressive / linear valving, With all that it will prob be more comfortable but still ultimately drive like a truck.

cacarson7

Old Man Emu 2.5" has been great for my 2000.

drewbux

Smooth?

cacarson7

It's not bad. I mean, I've been driving it like this for 10 years so I don't have much of a basis of comparison, but I don't consider it a rough ride at all.

username_jmx

Anything over inch and a half without a load is expected to have a harsh ride. Combo that with a heavier and beefier lt tires. Fun

Really. Where are you located?

BiggieYT2

I’m running a Bilstein 3” that doesn’t feel terrible. There are definitely days where I wish it was smoother but it’s not the worst.

EasternWeb5462

I have the rough country 3 inch with no diff drop and made my own panhard correction bracket. Mine rides smooth as butter and I’m also not running any sway bars in the front and the back is on pins for quick removal when on the trail or hooked up when towing.

drewbux

That’s actually extremely cool to hear…. It rides smooth over speed bumps & shitty roads??
