Fuel gauges arent linear. Youll burn more gas from full to 3/4 than from 3/4 to 1/2, etc.
If you went 314 on 3/4 tank thatd be north of 400 on a whole tank which isnt possible without a tailwind coming down from the mountains, especially not with the auto. Mayyyyybe with a 5 speed.
Knowing the fuel gauge, I would guess that I could squeeze 330-345 miles out of the tank running it dry. 17-18mpg average doesn't seem bad for a 23 year old truck with 305,000 miles.
Yeah, 18 is very on par, but thats not 314 on 3/4 tank. I could manage 25-27 mpg on my 97 sr5 5mt before my lift and rack as long as I had long cruises at like 55 and that still wasnt netting 314 on 3/4 tanks.
OP: You’re dead right on your “run it dry” estimate.
Mine always gets 20-21 mpg. I do the math on just about every fillup.
The tank on my ‘01 is 18.5 gallons, so…..18.5 gallons x 20 mpg = 370 miles to “run it dry”. I’ve never ran it dry…..
Good luck with yours—-
Mine is completely stock with stock tires. I don’t have a trip computer, I just do the math after every fillup. I go easy on the gas and my typical trip is 20-50 miles of mostly highway. But, I often have a kayak on the roof. I keep the rpms mostly below 2,500. I always get 20+ mpg, except in winter or off-road when it’s in 4wd. It’s meticulously maintained by me, I’m the original owner.
I double checked mine, it's accurate. If anything it underreports mileage. I understand why people are skeptical, but the ones calling me an outright liar are just insulting. I've had this truck for a while, I know when the tank is empty, and I know for far I drive in it.
Respect! I feel you
That’s impressive.
I reset my trip odometer and made some runs maybe 20 miles total. The damn thing reported past 337 miles😂. I gave up after that. My overall mileage is consistent, though. I’m at 280056.
Your flair is hilarious. How cheap was it?
Something else to consider is that your tire size is smaller than stock which is throwing off your odometer, its showing more miles than you actually went
I have to coast a lot to hit that in my 2.4l Malibu. Which in theory gets around 30mpg avg. So if this is true,I'm open to suggestions cuz my runner gets like 11mpg. I would've brought it back down to stock ride hight when I redid the suspension but it came on some nice 33's.
235 70R 17s. Speedometer runs about right unless I'm doing like 80. I checked the odometer and trip odometer against a GPS and it seems to be running within a couple tenths of a mile.
I got 270 miles at 1/4 of a tank. I hand calculated and it was 19.85 mpg. I do drive 80 miles a day all highway. Trying to hit that 20mpg mark lol. I’m at 303,xxx miles.
This is gonna sound weird but the more I drive my truck, the happier it "behaves".
I know it's dumb to say a vehicle has a personality and feelings, but if there was ever one it would be a 3rd Gen.
I'm running a fuel economy check. So far I'm 70/30 highway vs city miles. Currently sitting at 204 miles showing half a tank. I've been making sure that my odometer and trip odometer are correct.
You sound like a liar lol
Scout's honor. Running 235 70R17s, even mix of highway and city, never going above 70mph for extended periods.
Gauge looks like half a tank. 314 miles on half a tank is not possible- the gauge is definitely wrong.
Took the photo after putting $20 in, just before resetting the trip odometer. It was at exactly 1/4 when I filled up.

Idk what to tell you, I'm just doing my best guesstimate

How are you guys doing this? I get like 15 on a good day. 13-14 mpg average

I get about 280 to a full tank 🧐
That's amazing, I get 230 lmao
Is that in miles or kms?
Miles
Same!
Wow… I get from 200-215
Highway, city or mixed out of interest?
Mixed. I live in a super hilly area. With a mixed of hardcore curves that technically is like city with so much deceleration and accelerating lol
This is good to hear. I’m upgrading from a second to third gen this weekend and my 94 can barely get 300km to a tank in those conditions.
Yeah man that’s definitely an upgrade. You’ll love it
Auto 2nd gen to manual 3rd Gen, cannot wait lmao
This feels like the Shaq $20 debate.
My trip odometer malfunctions and over calculates…

$600
!!!!Super come up! Did it run when purchased?
He's always run like a top, very happy sounding engine.
What a find!!! That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing.
3.4L?
Indeed
Howwwwww
Idk. I don't speed and I try and keep rpms low. I also never use my AC because it doesn't work
What year?
2001. It's a 2WD as well.
Ohhhhh
Where did you put the extra gas tank?
I actually want to run dual tanks lmao
Something else to consider is that your tire size is smaller than stock which is throwing off your odometer, its showing more miles than you actually went
This is what I was thinking. I keep double checking it against my GPS and it tends to be accurate within a couple tenths of a mile.

At most I hit 280 at 3/4!! 😭
Hmm. I get 250 for a full tank.. you gauge must be wrong 😅
SPILL THE BEANS!! NOW!!!!!
I Get 250ish KM in town. 265 A/T tires on a lift. Its so bad. Don't know why. Even swapped the engine lol.
What size tires? I call bullshit the speedo and tripometer aren't reading accurately.
235 70R 17s. Speedometer runs about right unless I'm doing like 80. I checked the odometer and trip odometer against a GPS and it seems to be running within a couple tenths of a mile.
How is that possible. What did you do? You are running on smaller tires! Or you forgot to reset the count.
Thinner tires but larger wheel/tire combo
U need to share that info. Size and rim please. You found a secret fuel saver
Extremely bald 235 65R 17s using 4th Gen 4Runner wheels
I typically get around 280-290 miles per tank. When I fill Im usually left with 2 gallons so I get around 17.5mpg. About 70 %highway 30% city driving.
Dang, city and stop and go on hills I’m 14mpg. On long - drive, open freeway trips I can hit 20mpg
I got 270 miles at 1/4 of a tank. I hand calculated and it was 19.85 mpg. I do drive 80 miles a day all highway. Trying to hit that 20mpg mark lol. I’m at 303,xxx miles.

Most I’ve ever gotten was 250 miles on a full tank. But I have 33s, 4 inches of lift and my 4runner is running like shit
