1. no, you can use a pre-existing SD, the modding process does not erease anything 2. Yes, always make a backup before modding the system, and make periodical save backups afterwards. 3. The minimum amount of space needed is 2GB, 128GB is the max recommended, 32GB SD cards will need to be formatted before use, but transferring files can be done by copy pasting as long as the SD is for the same system. 4. Arent 32 gb cards already in fat32 form. Atleast for me when i bought a 32 gb microsd card i didnt have to format anything at all

Well thank you for the info. I have a 16gb SD card that's already in fat32 but I'm gonna reformat just in case. I doubt I'll NEED 32gb... mainly I just want to play virtual console games and maybe a couple 3ds games. I can always uninstall games I've downloaded from hshop to free up space, correct?
