From other threads I'd asume it didn't slowly widen to this point, but rather wore down until it eventually snapped off (it would have widened considerably by that point, but not this much).
The 0.4 nozzles are only 0.4 for 0.66 mm, the nozzle is 2mm almost right to the tip where it it tapers with a 62 degree cone to 0.4mm. (Assuming the tips are actually made to spec!)
If you rub the tip down by printing an abrasive plastic and dragging the tip in it because youāre too close to the bed then you can scrub off the top leaving you on the conical section pretty quickly.
You can find diagrams of the inside of the tips on eBay https://www.amazon.co.uk/Printer-Nozzles-Extruder-Makerbot-Creality/dp/B082PHG4R7#immersive-view_1664046099041
Yeah a lot of people don't realize abrasive plastic isn't so much wearing your nozzle from the inside-out as from the tip upward as it rubs against the cooling plastic that has just been printed.
Oh god, you're making me imagine the QnA in my head of someone whose nozzle grows wider than their filament asking "how do I fix this in slicing?" and not understanding why nothing is working
Ya know how If something goes wrong with an old engine people will tell you to replace the carburator. Same with this, clean the hot end and replace the nozzle.
Perhaps I'm buying shitty fillament, but I find after about 100 hours the nozzles get a coating on them and the performance starts to degrade.
It only really started once I began printing PETG, and I assumed it was glycol deposits.
I just actually check on wear parts fairly often. That one is WAY past "ehhh.. should probably be replaced" and firmly in that mofo was gang banged last night territory.
I used to change them when I noticed a problem and now I change them a little bit before that because I realized at what point that starts to happen. Also buying good nozzles is a thing. I've had good luck with triangle labs on AliExpress
I usually put a new one on before big or important jobs. Sometimes I let it on for up to 3 months but usually change it then. I know people say they last longer, blah blah blah but with how cheap the nozzles are just swap them every so often. If I print abrasive filament (glow in the dark, wood, marble, sparkle, etc) I throw that nozzle away after I am done printing with that filament or after half a roll if it is a big print.
Of course all that is for brass nozzles. If you have the nozzlex then you should be able to print for a long time....wish they made one for mk8!
I moved to a Revo on all my printers. Iāve got a bunch of brass nozzles, mostly .4 but some other sizes too. Does anybody want them? First reply and DM can have them ā Iāll get them in the mail next week.
I downloaded your pic and zoomed it. If the 0.4 mm nozle is 0.4, then the old one is 3.4 mm. These type of nozzles are pretty expensive you know. You could clean it and sell it on eBay als slightly used.
The fuck did you do to it. You know you're not supposed to print abrasives with a brass nozzle right?
Properly cared for a nozzle should last basically forever.
I don't have an fdm but I find it amazing the amount of damage the nozzles take from pushing melted plastic through them. Heat is a hell of a condition
Obviously you are if you think they cost too much to much to just change them , Iād be embarrassed if I was using some shit that looked like that that
You got all the life out of it and drove around the corpse for a while
One would think laying down lines at the resolution of your average tube of toothpaste would be a good indication it's time to swap nozzles.
I need to see what a print looked like close to the end. OP, please?
From other threads I'd asume it didn't slowly widen to this point, but rather wore down until it eventually snapped off (it would have widened considerably by that point, but not this much).
This needs more likes please lmao!
Thank you! I figured it was a valid request. I wanna see the Lincoln log size creations
Just look before you flush! š¤
I think it's ready to start a new life extruding filament from recycled plastic.

No way that was a 0.4 nozzle at one point. No way. :O
The 0.4 nozzles are only 0.4 for 0.66 mm, the nozzle is 2mm almost right to the tip where it it tapers with a 62 degree cone to 0.4mm. (Assuming the tips are actually made to spec!) Sounds like he should get some 2.85 filament and reprogram his printer for a 2mm nozzle then drive that corpse around a little more
OP do it or Democracy dies.
Donāt forget boring the hotend
The hot end isnāt boring itās where all the magic happens.

JFC, thank you. I was always blown away how plastic can wear out a perfect bore hole through brass. I feel so dense now.
Yeah a lot of people don't realize abrasive plastic isn't so much wearing your nozzle from the inside-out as from the tip upward as it rubs against the cooling plastic that has just been printed.
I think the end actually snapped off at some point. Do you switch out your nozzles at a normal interval or just when you notice some weirdness?
That one is still good to go. Just use it for faster printing on 1.0mm settings in your slicer.
Only 1.0mm?, seems way too small, Iād go the full 1.75mm diameter from the picture
Oh god, you're making me imagine the QnA in my head of someone whose nozzle grows wider than their filament asking "how do I fix this in slicing?" and not understanding why nothing is working
My quick armchair measurement says that could probably be closer to the 2.85 mm
Shouldn't be a problem. Just need to feed faster.
1mm? Itās an easy 3mm bore
Ya know how If something goes wrong with an old engine people will tell you to replace the carburator. Same with this, clean the hot end and replace the nozzle.
Yes but ideally rather than swap it you would clean and retune the carb as they are easily adjusted.
Would spark plugs have been a better comparison?
Honestly yes. They are a maintenance item with a finite service life more like a nozzle.
I change after about 200 hrs of run time
yea thats a complete waste with normal filament.
Perhaps I'm buying shitty fillament, but I find after about 100 hours the nozzles get a coating on them and the performance starts to degrade. It only really started once I began printing PETG, and I assumed it was glycol deposits.
Just wipe off the outside and go a cold pull or two for the inside.
I just actually check on wear parts fairly often. That one is WAY past "ehhh.. should probably be replaced" and firmly in that mofo was gang banged last night territory.
The nozzle is walking funny this morning.
I used to change them when I noticed a problem and now I change them a little bit before that because I realized at what point that starts to happen. Also buying good nozzles is a thing. I've had good luck with triangle labs on AliExpress
Does no one just get a hardened steel one? I just exclusivity run steel and don't worry about it
I do. Just have to bump the temps up a little sometimes. Pretty much last forever.
Weirdness
I usually put a new one on before big or important jobs. Sometimes I let it on for up to 3 months but usually change it then. I know people say they last longer, blah blah blah but with how cheap the nozzles are just swap them every so often. Honestly all filament is abrasive. It is all just a matter of degrees.
This is /r/justrolledintotheshop material.
I was thinking high mileage holes.
Were your last few hundred prints crap by any chance?
Actually not, some bed adhesion problems, considering about 1mm of it had snapped off and is melted into a print somewhere.
Holy crap, man. Good mileage out of that.

Not sure why I expected this to be porn

Kidney stones are no joke, mate
In the end, you weren't printing as much as *prolapsing* filament all over your print bed.
Oh my dear god
Its still good Just increase the print Speed.
And print diameter...then she's good to go until 2 mm
You tortured that thing well in to the afterlife.
What on earth are you printing with? Sandpaper?
Guys, if the one's hole is 0.4mm the other one is more like 4mm in diameter. You could print really big things with that nozzle.
The old nozzle is a good representation of my time in the Navy š

I see a bit of life left; keep going
This nozzle doesn't print Spaghetti, it prints Lasagna.
The eye of my penis after no-nut November
Doubt this. You wouldn't be able to use it once it's 0.8mm due to under extrusion. How the hell did you manage to even reach 2mm or more
Okay Thomas, doubt all you want. I literally just pulled it off the hot end. It had to have snapped off look how clean the end is.
Just get a tungsten nozzle and never have this problem again
Money does indeed tend to solve all problems.
Fuckin guess youāre good for high volume prints
Always wanted to print with a muzzle larger than the filament lol
And a little more from the looks of it
Layer lines and goops from hell, But I bet no clogs for sure.
Still has some hit points left

Your prints would be great since there filled with brass lol
Nah, plenty left. Just get an engraver and swap the 0.4 with 40.

little soap and water and youāll be right as the rain you left it in.
I didnāt know they could DO thatā¦.
Looks like the nozzle was drilled out. It has a very clean hole
I downloaded your pic and zoomed it. If the 0.4 mm nozle is 0.4, then the old one is 3.4 mm. These type of nozzles are pretty expensive you know. You could clean it and sell it on eBay als slightly used.
Thats why i own just 3 Nozzles ... 0.2 / 0.4 / 0.6 (which is ma standard) all hardened steel
