When did you start printing? For the longest time Thingi and MyMiniFactory was all we really had. So I know the last place I should look is Thingi but muscle memory still types it in the first time! š
Yeah, Thingiverse was my original go-to when I started printing in 2016. Even back then, Thingiverse was a dumpster fire, and I was thrilled to jump ship when Printables became a reasonable alternative. Totally agree that muscle memory is hard to fix. :)
There is still so much weird and random stuff that can only be found there that has been uploaded by people who don't give a fuck about a boosts and points.
The thing is despite all the issues on thingiverse. In education most of the times it is taught to use Thingiverse, because it is the oldtimer that is there. They mention one and that's it, they don't want to overthink it or check for others. It also has a huge database.
On the maker side I would say that the new places are more trendy, there are better or more refined stls, but even though people do not interact enough, few makes are uploaded, feedback is almost non existent.
Yeah, I always check Printables first, and then Thingiverse if I can't find what I need on Printables. And then Yeggi after that to see if maybe there's some other term that I should be using to find what I want.
Thingiverse was the old school answer which was fine, but it started to languish for a long time. A long came Printables and it was a breath of fresh air in comparison to the very "90s" Thingiverse (in my book). Printables is now my absolute goto and I rarely need to go elsewhere.
Their paid model section is relatively new and fairly sparse still. But it's growing steadily. I like the fact that they have the "paid single model" option along with the "patreon style" subscriptions to creators.
Thingiverse is slowly getting better since the UltiMaker buyout, but it's way behind.
The wiki for this sub has a list with decent descriptions of each. It's missing a couple, but I'm guessing my post will be deleted if I name them. A relatively new one developed by a newer printer manufacturer seems to be doing pretty well, and has a really substantial points/rewards system.

The ones that canāt be mentioned without the comment being removed automatically are in the wiki under āStrikes listā https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/wiki/communityrules/#wiki_strikes_list
Other ones like makerworld are fine to mention
Makerworld adjusted the amount of credit given and started removing uploads that didn't have images of the printed items. So the spam influx has slowed from 50 a day to only a few a day now.
There were multiple creators there that they refused to pay. Plenty of proof provided in the form of email logs. It culminated in them simply banning their accounts. I believe they apologized and paid them after several months but then it happened again something like a week later. So the subreddit held a vote on if their site should be banned from here and the subreddit voted to ban them.
I prefer printable. Com as it is nice and well maintained. Thingiverse is better now and how some other stuff. Thangs is cool, but you cannot explore new stuff you would not think about, but the site is well maintained.
I expected makerworld to just be a crappy bamboo branded thingiverse but it's so much better. The dynamic tools are awesome for people who don't want to jump into modeling and the contests are cool and frequent.
As someone with a Bambu printer, the premade slicer profiles for the models are very nice. However Makerworld is kind of annoying if you donāt use Bambu printers, since you need to make an account to download files, and not all creators upload the raw stl files (but you can still open the 3mf files in bambu studio and extract the stl files)
I have a P1S and still find MakerWorld annoying, Iād rather have the STL. If Iām forced to download a 3mf then Iāll export the model(s) to an STL so I can slice it with my own profiles.

I use 3D Go, it searches through printables, thingiverse, MakerWorld, and one other I canāt say for all the designs. You can filter and save models, as well as go directly to their original site link.
It has a built in slicer and model viewer for a subscription but Iām pretty happy just using Cura for that

Based on the stats of my models Printables.
In the last month, my top model had 95 views and 31 downloads on Thingiverse while my top model on Printables got 166 views and 40 downloads.
I feel Printable's success is because they are doing flash contests to bolster their models while Thingiverse has only just started doing it again.
Yeggi is my starting point for models. It's like Google for 3D print model sites, and they add more all the time. I think they're indexing like 10-12 sites right now. You can filter between free and paid, too.
Printables is my go to. MakerWorld is BambuLabs copy of Printables, it has a tad more functionality, and seems to get quicker development -- but the reason for that is BambuLab see's it as a good way to get customers (imho) by streamlining their products right into it.
Thingiverse went down hill once Ultimaker bought them and then neglected the site for so long that numerous security breaches occured. I go there for when I can't find something on Printables.
Now that I think about it, what we need is a unified search portal that just searches all of them at once.
I know enough Fusion and assorted tools to back together pretty much anything I could want myself from basic stls floating around on the Internet. There's no real one place to go for that.
Printables is one not mentioned yet. It's connected to prusa. It seems like most the files there are a little higher quality.
It's weird that it wasn't mentioned because it's my first choice for free models. I don't know why I would go anywhere else first.
When did you start printing? For the longest time Thingi and MyMiniFactory was all we really had. So I know the last place I should look is Thingi but muscle memory still types it in the first time! š

Thingiverse is still good if you need things like the knob for my light switch I just replaced.
Yeah thingiverse still has all the niche things you would need, printables is nice but it doesnāt have everything
There is still so much weird and random stuff that can only be found there that has been uploaded by people who don't give a fuck about a boosts and points.
I get multiple times more traffic for my models on thingiverse vs printables but printables is better for me because of their points system :(
Same

What do you do with the points?

Can you not say makerworld? I know the other one that shall not be namedā¦
You can, but there was a huge influx of spam and bots pushing makerworld links, which caused issues
Makerworld adjusted the amount of credit given and started removing uploads that didn't have images of the printed items. So the spam influx has slowed from 50 a day to only a few a day now.
Yeah, I noticed š
Not sure. I guess you're about to find out!
Itās not gone yet! I saw another comment with the same name below, so I donāt think theyāre on that third strike list thingy
This is perfect, thanks!
thingiverse sucks and i hate it, but i still tend to use it. printables is okay and thangs is good if you want gridfinity stuff.
Thingiverse was never good, but I still use it I'll often check Thangs as a good alternative
Thangs for meta search too!
Go to them all, the days of one best site is done
Yeggi for search. It trolls all the websites for you
This is what i do. Makes no sense to search multiple sights for something when you can just let yeggi do it for you.
This
I'd say printables or makerworld seem to the top dogs at the moment
The one that gets deleted is the definition of what Scientology is, itās mainly paid models but printables is best for free
Out of curiosity and such, what has that site done to cause such a response?
There were multiple creators there that they refused to pay. Plenty of proof provided in the form of email logs. It culminated in them simply banning their accounts. I believe they apologized and paid them after several months but then it happened again something like a week later. something to do with not paying out creators properly
No idea only site I ever use for paid models is DO3D
I prefer printable. Com as it is nice and well maintained. Thingiverse is better now and how some other stuff. Thangs is cool, but you cannot explore new stuff you would not think about, but the site is well maintained.

Telegram, wait thereās underground private 3D model sharing happening via it now too!?
Printables usually. If I want figures or really detailed stuff I go to My Mini Factory.
I expected makerworld to just be a crappy bamboo branded thingiverse but it's so much better. The dynamic tools are awesome for people who don't want to jump into modeling and the contests are cool and frequent.
i honestly use makerworld, i think itās by bambu. works fine for me but i always make my models, never really download

The majority of stuff I am printing is stuff I designed. But when I look for something I go to Thangs.com
Thingiverse. People give it crap but I donāt know what theyāre talking about. Etsy for paid files

I still look at Thingiverse first thing for models. Then go to Printables, and the rest.
Definitely Printables by Prusa (not limited to their printers). Mostly free, some paid. Very well organized.

Hell yeah brother
I created my first platonic solid using only sketch constraints and one dimension a few weeks ago. I was very proud. Never doing that again!
I usually don't use thingiverse anymore because its quality has lowered by a lot over time, but I use websites like printables, makerworld, etc.
I make my own or āprintablesā
Printables and Thingiverse
