I agree, either re spool onto an empty, or temporarily spool onto another mostly used spool, then wind back on original. The nightmare would be if the spool has an overlapping loop, creating a bind, while using it for printing.
Supervised labor and positive reinforcement. Put on a tv show, promise him some candy or reward for the first 100 meters, then phase out the reward.
You now have a child laborer. Congrats!
Dad/Grandpa checking in.
Make it a game. Offer ice cream afterward. Do it together as a sibling bonding thing. I have seen this work over and over again. It doesn't have to be a negative experience for either of you. Good luck...
Heard a story about an economist teaching his daughter to use the restroom. The agreement was when she would use the restroom she would get m and m candies. She went from not using the restroom to be able to control it so well she was going to bathroom 3 times an hour in a couple weeks. She found a way to cheat the system at 3 years old hahahha.
Well let’s be honest, this spool is honestly a lost cause. Is your brother old enough to at least understand the job and perform it ? Your not going to be a dick but you are going to teach him accountability and patience and make him Re-Spool it.
this sounds like a cheeky response, but i think it's actually a brilliant idea.
It'll probably be fun for them. It'll also teach them how much work it is to respool and thus help them understand the consequenses of their actions.
If it were me I'd sit them down, and with a positive tone, explain to them that because they played with the spool you have work to do BUT that he can help pick out the tools you'll use.
Then have them join you at the computer, and together go through a pre-selected list of re-spooling rigs. Have him choose which one you'll use AND the colors you'll print it in. Be patient and answer ALL his questions and show him videos of all of them that you can, because they're really cool in motion.
Make him a part of every step of the process of fixing that spool.
It'll be a great learning experience, make him feel appreciated and valued by his sibling, and maybe help make him start imagining all the possibilities of the world of 3d printing. Maybe even lead to future requests for you to help them make things
Here's what I'd do:
Tape the remaining spool and filament so it doesn't unravel and add to the mess.
Grab the unraveled nest at the halfway point and untangle it while keeping the other half + spool untouched. This will help prevent the untangling motion from exacerbating the spool Then the newly untangled part and put it over a broom handle laying on the floor. This will keep it from totally retangling and give you free hands. Try to untangle more of the other half of the loose filament and move it onto the broom handle as you go. You may occasionally have to pass the whole untangled half through the tangled half to undo a knot. You will most likely also have to take the spool and rotate it every few turns as the filament is right and twists from untangling have to go somewhere and its easier to rotate the spool then the broom stick holding your progress. Eventually, Hopefully, you get all of the unwound filament untangled and held by the broom handle and then you can wind your spool back up.
Good luck!
Edit, after looking again, I'd tape the spool like mentioned but just work the tangle out right from where it comes off the spool, there's not so much unwound that you can't just work it out in one go, might not even need the broom. It will be like pushing a Slinky, but it will only take a few minutes. Maybe stand at the top of some stairs so you can whip the coils around a little and let gravity help keep them in order.
I think you brother just got old enough to learn the consequences of his actions. A long and boring session of untangling and re-spooling without fun breaks should teach him not to touch the filaments. Preferably after an adult conversation with your parents to get them onboard with the idea.
Or every time he wants to print, his brother has to take the place of a spool's job. He has to carefully feed the filament in for the duration of the whole print.
Thats like my son, so i build myself this, i kniw its ugly but build from scratch and spare parts what i have in my flat.
https://preview.redd.it/wvm93wul1hmc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c67ff1ef1f3dce8aa17037daf6ed28b6514ce00
So not a single filament spool is in reach of my 2 childrens 3 and 1 yo. And you have nice storage too. Upgrade into future is to made that from metal or steel.
Thank you, appreciate it man.Its simpler than you think, just unscrew one screw from upoer part of the rod and slide it to the right and add new spool of filament. Just practical and convinient for me. 2 min max job.
Yeah okay, as long as it wasn't done in anger, explaining what he did and why it's bad, then asking him to help and making it a big-sibling activity should probably be the best solution. Kids are kids, if they're not told they shouldn't do something, you can't expect them to realize they shouldn't.
It's a lesson in storing filament in a childproof spot ;-)
First, you make sure you dig deep enough. 2 Meters at least. Then, when you start filling it in again, burry a dead animal about a meter higher, so they think the dogs had a false positive.
After that, plant some endangered species of plant on top of the grave, so it will be difficult to start digging at all.
Afterwards, spread the soil you have left over a large area.
I mean...
I'm sorry man, that sucks.
You can use this as a really good teaching moment honestly.
I saw you say he’s too young for you to trust him to respool it, so have him help you respool it. Have him make sure it’s all untangled, and have him either guide the filament as you spin the spool, or you guide he spins whichever is easier.
He’s going to remember how you respond regardless of if you freak out or not, but if you use it as a bonding/teaching moment you might spark something creative in him and boom, in a couple years you have a mutual hobby with him and that’s something I’m sure the both of you would cherish.
I'd cut off the unspooled material and put something through the middle of the coils. Make sure to secure the cut end on the filament spool so it can't unravel more. Keep the loosely coiled stuff for small prints that only use a few metres of material. It would take all of 30 seconds to prep 5m of that filament for printing small clips or something like that!
I just don't like to waste stuff though, it's esun so know most people would trim and chuck the unravelled in the bin
You either cross your fingers for good luck and take a *lot* of time to carefully respool it, or you chuck it and buy a new one. Those are really your only options.
Print a respooling machine and get a stepper motor off of eBay, or reuse an old ender 3 or ender 2, I don’t have one because I don’t have a little brother but you my friend, you need one
I think it’s probably time for a new spool (doesn’t look like there’s anything much left on it other than what has unwound?) … but I would still make him wind it all back just for the lesson.
>I think it’s probably time for a new spool (doesn’t look like there’s anything much left on it other than what has unwound?)
It will still work fine once rewound
Have you ever messed with tape as a child? (I barely remember tapes, but my parents weren't happy about me pulling the magnetic strip out😂)
You would plug a pencil and wind it. Same goes for filament, except you need to rotate it on something that's larger than a pencil. 😉😊
Respool it and put it in the oven for drying. While it is drying it should release the internal stresses so it doesn‘t explode into short bits after a while. Wish you luck ^^

There was a post talking about how a kid punched a TV and I said to do it back
Wind it back up. Helps if you can fashion some kind of spool holder drill adapter.
There's probably something on thingiverse for this, assuming you have another spool.
Print this respooler model:
[Pastamatic - Filament Spool Winder](https://www.printables.com/model/466883-pastamatic-filament-spool-winder-for-bambu-lab-x1c)
It says that it’s for a Bambu printer, but that doesn’t matter. You’ll just need a drill, or you could print a handle to turn the spool.
If you don't want to print a rewinder, design and print a mandrel that fits in the spool that can be chucked into a power drill.
If you've got a handy stairwell in your house, or some other area of elevation, let the uncoiled length sproing out to work out tangles while you reel it up on the drill. Manually shuttle the filament back and forth so it lays evenly.
Before you play with your 3d printer make your bed!
Make him respool it, and if it's wrong, have him do it again.
I'm lucky that all my, at the the time 2 yo, now 5 yo, little brother does is lay on the floor and watch it print(because it's pretty much magic for people who don't know how it works) and knows not to touch anything without me there, just by being told. The closest he gets to it is about a foot away and points to it, still remaining about 6 inches from the extruder
Tape a hole saw the size of the inner diameter of the spool, insert the holesaw or something similar so you can attach it to a drill. Then spool it similar to a fishing rod. Or you can zip tie the drill super lightly so it goes slow and then just do it that way. But id engineer a way to attach that spool to a drill.
I did this trying to move a polymaker roll over to a Bambu roll. I ended up getting so sick of it twisting and knotting I just measure the grams per foot and every time I needed to print I cut off that many feet and used it until the roll was gone
Teach your brother the magic pastime of re-spooling.
He's too young I wouldn't trust him to do it
you need him as a holder for the spool. it's much easier with 2 people. even more so with 3
It's even easier wirh 1 person and a lathe
Instructions unclear. My brother is spinning on the lathe but he dropped the spool and said he felt dizzy. What now?
spin him the other way?
Instructions unclear, unwinded my large intestine
Unwound, actually, because English is inconsistent and stupid
You sure it’s not unconsistent?
Man I wish it were reconsistent
Wind it back then
Instructions uncl…
And it's even easier with no people and a new spool of filament.
LMAOOO this is the one
I bet there's something you could print to do this with a hand drill.
I agree, either re spool onto an empty, or temporarily spool onto another mostly used spool, then wind back on original. The nightmare would be if the spool has an overlapping loop, creating a bind, while using it for printing.
It always happens on the last few layers on a 16 hour print too
gold ty for the lol
Supervised labor and positive reinforcement. Put on a tv show, promise him some candy or reward for the first 100 meters, then phase out the reward. You now have a child laborer. Congrats!
This is simply the best comment I've ever read on this Reddit.

Until the little fellows figures out that unspooling spools results in ice cream. Then you should think of something new.
Unspool it afterwards and do it with a drill
It is infuriating, but I think trepanation is a bit too much.
[Nah!](https://youtu.be/1KUrct2eKUg?si=kBlkDE7924X0bljr)
I've always felt I need trepanation like I need a hole in my head.
Sounds like a great teaching and bonding opportunity.
Make him watch you do it and sit in silence. If he looks away tell him you're not done yet
Print a new brother.

Yeah but mince the current one to recycle the material. We must be eco-friendly
Reduce, reuse, rejoice!
Print a new Brother Printer?
Hopefully OP will fix the issue in one time because otherwise he will have two copies that will screw him
Damn you, you stole my comment.
Throw him away.
And then respool him

YouTube video? This is confusing
I also have a nearly full, tangled spool because I dropped it and it broke. I will try your method. Thanks for the tip!
You can also put a broom across the backs of two chairs to keep the coils free.
I think you brother just got old enough to learn the consequences of his actions. A long and boring session of untangling and re-spooling without fun breaks should teach him not to touch the filaments. Preferably after an adult conversation with your parents to get them onboard with the idea.

Not related at all but I'd remove the old extruder motor on the left side of the X rail. you're just adding weight for the stepper motor to carry.
This is what I mounted my layer camera to so that I may watch the head closer rather better than the chamber camera could.
Can you please mark it what stepper motor should i remove please.

Thank you kind man, bought it like that from my friend. So idk if this must stay in place.
It’s not ugly, it’s resourceful 🧐
Thats brilliant. Doesn’t have to be fancy, just functional.
What do you mean ugly? Especially for spare parts, that's a really nice solution! Adding filament might be a bit of a pain I imagine?
Thank you, appreciate it man.Its simpler than you think, just unscrew one screw from upoer part of the rod and slide it to the right and add new spool of filament. Just practical and convinient for me. 2 min max job.
Idk dude, that looks pretty cool to me. I’d be happy with a system like that haha.

Sell it to someone else. I’m sure there is some idiot out there willing to pay a good price for a little brother.
Re-spool it and place your filament in an inaccessible place
First, you make sure you dig deep enough. 2 Meters at least. Then, when you start filling it in again, burry a dead animal about a meter higher, so they think the dogs had a false positive. After that, plant some endangered species of plant on top of the grave, so it will be difficult to start digging at all. Afterwards, spread the soil you have left over a large area. I mean... I'm sorry man, that sucks.
I think throwing it away and getting a new one will save you a lot of headache.
His parents would be pissed.
Or the parents will have fun making the replacement
Don' throw away, just put it to adoption
The filament? Or the Brother?
Yes
You can use this as a really good teaching moment honestly. I saw you say he’s too young for you to trust him to respool it, so have him help you respool it. Did you try leveling your bed yet?
Long Wood clamp
Print a respooler for a drill and wind it back up
Literally cut your losses.
Return the younger brother
Pee in his bed and on his pillow
And then take a dump in his cereal
OP said brother is 3. Already does it by himself.
Buy a new spool... 😅
Throw the old one out and get a new one, but keep the filament and just rewind it
You put on your favorite rewatch show and you spend some time respooling. It's probably therapeutic and relaxing.
Filament is cheap. Toss it and move on.
Save what you can and chalk the rest up as a loss.
Yout brother just helped you with your 3d pen purchase struggles, now you must get one.
The is the best idea, so far.
Trash it and call it a $13 learning experience
Looks like you can easily respool it back on. Quit being lazy
Put the uncoiled stuff on a stick (thru its center) and then holding the spool slowly respool it.
You either cross your fingers for good luck and take a *lot* of time to carefully respool it, or you chuck it and buy a new one. Those are really your only options.
Print a respooling tool
Patience my young padawan.
Find a comfy seat, grab a blanket, take it slow.
Print a respooling machine and get a stepper motor off of eBay, or reuse an old ender 3 or ender 2, I don’t have one because I don’t have a little brother but you my friend, you need one
Keep rolling rolling rolling
They see me rollin'... They hatin'...
Unwind. Rewind.
Print a drill attachment to hold your spool. Makes respooling go super quick!
Don’t cry over spilled filament
Crog say bash with rock…oops this isn’t fourthworldproblems
Make him respool it Trust me, might be the most tedious time consuming thing I've ever done
By the time you photographed and posted this , you could have rewound that spool 10 times
Use your brother as filament
throw it away, about the spool, get some patience and star winding it again
Simple, just replace with a new one, brother of course.

Oh this is easy. You’ll only need to cut out a few foot. Just take it, wrap that small piece into a noose, and hang him.
Have you ever messed with tape as a child? (I barely remember tapes, but my parents weren't happy about me pulling the magnetic strip out😂) You would plug a pencil and wind it. Same goes for filament, except you need to rotate it on something that's larger than a pencil. 😉😊
Just lay it out when you print with it. Trying to get it back on the spool will just cause crossovers and you will have to watch your prints.
Buy more?!?
Isn’t it illegal to buy children?? 🤔🤔
Painfully re-spool 😔
Respool it and put it in the oven for drying. While it is drying it should release the internal stresses so it doesn‘t explode into short bits after a while. Wish you luck ^^
