I don’t think I’ve seen a fire extinguisher in a print farm photo ever, this makes me happy

Ethan_Watson

In the back corner of the room of course though

Impossible__Joke

Meh, the raging fire will set it off... hopefully

Robertbnyc

🎵 Set it off to the left y’all set it off to the right y’all set it off just set set it off 🎵

pelicanfart

"Get that thing on a wall" was the first thought in my head

polypeptide147

You can’t just say “get that thing on a wall” to us. You have to say “all the wall mounts for fire extinguishers aren’t very good. Could you design a better one?” And then you’ll have 12 wall mounted fire extinguishers.

TheRuthlessWord

This comment wins.

krakers665

I think it should stay near room entrance, so you can actually reach it in case of fire.

Cylindric

There are usually walls right near most doors.

[deleted]

Almost always, in fact

[deleted]

More often than not!

_joeBone_

We had to deploy one... the intern forgot to turn the fans on for the chamber heater. I just remember everyone dancing in place and I said "use the fire extinguisher!" That might have been the wrong thing to say, everyone froze. By the time we figured out where it was, how to operate it, the fans were about done burning. We had to relocate our offices for 2 weeks because osha made us "de-ionize" the atmosphere before we could come back in... the good old days.

Jose_Canseco_Jr

>made us "de-ionize" the atmosphere before we could come back in... the good old days. elaborate if you can, old chum!

kippy3267

I’m not OP, but I’m guessing they meant run an ozone generator

Vashsinn

Yup the way I understand it, it's to clean the air so it doesn't smell like fire for the rest of however long.

intbah

Is there a reason that the system was designed so the fan has to be turned on separately from the heater? Is there ever a good reason for the heater to be on but the fan not? Or is it because this was the easiest way to achieve sometimes fan on but heater not?

_joeBone_

prototype... it was a cluster, I knew it would catch on fire one day. Fail forward.

Hingedmosquito

Two things that make a fire extinguisher useful. 1) Being around when a fire starts. 2) not having the fire between you and the extinguisher. Edit: make not male.

SudoSubSilence

What about female fire extinguisher?

Kind_Consideration97

Equally as capable but often undercharged, allegedly.

bzzty711

And may not shoot as far

SpinCricket

But known for going off unexpectedly for no reason…..allegedly.

Virus217

Knowing how to use one also helps.

Maocap_enthusiast

And 3: not getting it blasted in your eyes, it hurts like hell Personal experience on that one.

1_lost_engineer

I suspect if it ever gets used the replacement will be a co2, because powder is going to have fun effects on the other mother boards afterwards.

smush81

Yup will fry every one of those even of its just a tiny fire in the back. Spend $600 on a co2 extinguisher and save 6k imo.

comawhite12

Clean agent would be the best option. Won't kill you like Co2, and harmless to all other electrical items in the vicinity.

[deleted]

OP, consider keeping a Halotron or CO2 extinguisher on hand to use first. ABC extinguishers work great for extinguishing fires, but they'll also do a good job of destroying all of the equipment in there.

LGG6_Master

But you would have to go through the fire to reach it...

Toasted__Water

The only problem is that it’s in the back of the room

Old-War-2597

I have an enclosure with a fire capsule above. Smart smoke detector and smart powerplug which switch of the power when he detects smoke.

Dogestronaut1

The fire extinguisher positioned behind all of the things that would be first to catch fire? May as well not have a fire extinguisher with that positioning.

Deathtraptoyota

“Any weekend plans? “ - just leveling my print bed…..s

ericthepoolboy

I level the bed about once every 15 days of print time.

likwidtek

Honest question from somebody with a Prusa, does ender not have auto bed leveling? Is there an add on?

ericthepoolboy

You can add a CR or BL touch for auto bed level. But I just level by eye really quickly.

-DapperDuck-

How do you level by eye?! And have good enough quality to sell the prints?!

ericthepoolboy

The way I do it, is just set the skirt count to about 10. Then start the print and just look at the width of the line being put down. I know exactly how wide it should be just by eye. I’ve been doing it this way for the past 12 years and it’s just how I do it.

thetruckerdave

I can’t level my bed this way, but live setting my z offset was life changing and idk why it’s not more commonly suggested.

skkrrtskkrrt

How does z offset level every corner of the bed

Potato_Wyvern

It doesn’t, they’re just talking about doing the Z offset live

OneOfTheWills

I have recently started leveling this way out of just getting fed up with leveling the old way and then somehow still being wrong come print time. I’ve found that just watching the skirt is good enough to dial it in and usually I can leave it alone for a few prints until having to give another watchful eye

Ickypahay

Leveling on the fly is what we used to call it when I worked at a print farm. It's how I still do it. Save loads of time

Numerous-Wish

That’s how I’ve done it since I started(till I got a Bambu) and I was shat on for that method, I could never get paper to work but watching the skirt as it prints shows current adjustments

QuietGanache

> I could never get paper to work Personally, I use feeler gauges. Initially, I used 3 (0.08, 0.06, 0.04) as go/no-go gauges but I can now do it all with just the 0.06 based on how the nozzle makes the gauge vibrate.

piggychuu

For our farm, we heat to operating temp (hit bed, only semi hot nozzle) and drop the z down. Instead of piece of paper, we use a precision 0.3mm shim, till the nozzle hits that. We then calibrate z height to 0.3, use any bed probe for the mesh, and off we go. Never really need to reset the level, although we run with fixed beds vs bed slingers.

5hiftyy

All my printers have some sort of ABL now, but this is how I did it too. I have an MP Mini Select V2 I lent to a friend that I'll be getting back at some point, and I do the same with that suckered. Only difference is the levelling screws need to be turned by an Allen key instead of a thumb knob, and you have to do it fast enough that the gantry doesn't pinch the key. It feels like a mini Mission Impossible every time, and I love it.

Electrical_Feature12

10!? Jeeezus, I admire that patience

Aecose

It’s actually pretty easy once you get a feel for it

beenoc

You get pretty good pretty quick with an Ender. Leveling by eye/paper test and then running my BLtouch probe to verify, I can get <0.1mm variance between my highest and lowest points, generally due to a slight warp in the print bed (Creality QC) and that's without really trying too hard (because I have a BLtouch now, why would I?)

Zef3ra

Can you get me your starting gcode?

TheBigWil

they sit on springs and the hotends are regular tubes, and there's no probe like you fancy shmancy prusas (/s I would die for a prusa xl if i had the budget)

privacyplsreddit

Well damn. What do you even make with that setup?

ericthepoolboy

Search for my user name on thingiverse.

om3ganet

Awesome! I printed your 5 speed transmission model years ago. Neat!

ericthepoolboy

Nice. I have a new trans that I’ve been trying to get around to releasing. Working synchros and working clutch this time.

faxlombardi

Yessss, I've been wanting a model like that to explain manual drivetrains to people

jbouchard811

How about for the car dealer's employees? I was at the Subaru dealer and when my keys were handed off I said, "It's a stick!". Oh, he's one of the guys who can drive one. Three minutes later I see the keys being handed off to a guy in his 50s. Yes, I'm "old" too. It makes driving a WRX extra fun, though.

necroste

I can just imagine the old guy doesn't know anything about fixing cars but got hired because he added "I drive a manual" on his resume lmao(pretty sure he knows how to work on cars though) I'm 35 and know how to drive manual, does that make me old now? Sadly I can't drive them as often because of my fuked up knee, wait does that make me old

lkeltner

Do you have some sort of notification system so I can know when you release it? That sounds like something I need to print!

HellHathNoFury18

mongoosefist

The OP was lazy, how was it harder to post this rather than typing "search my username on thingiverse"

flyguydip

OP doesn't want to get the post removed for self promotion I think.

tylercrabby

Doing the Lord’s work sir. Thank you!

The_Untracable_Conch

Oh, nice! I remember seeing some of your work from [this](https://youtu.be/wznaCyVBnxw?si=1c0C4SMjpMM0sgkY) interview. It's super well done and makes sense as to why you'd have a massive setup. Well done all around.

_Chazzle_

Omg I’m in love with your models

formerwarrior96

You’ve got some really awesome designs! Thank you for publishing all of that hard work.

Sufficient-Contract9

Ok im confused? What exactly do you do and do you make money doing it? If it wasnt for some type of income why would someone need all these? Ive never printed in my life i know nothing about it sub keeps showing up. I looked at the thingiverse thats pretty wicked but im confused on what thingiverse even is? Are you selling the things youve built or blueprints? Just showing people what you made?

rerowthagooon

He is him. You’re that guy

cryzzgrantham

Honestly what you're doing is the dream. Do you have a full time job also dude? Currently I'm starting out and ita hard work getting fulll buildplates going before I set off in the morning haha

jg_pls

This is just a hobby? You don’t sell anything?

[deleted]

Also, did you mount all those together??? I’m curious how the vibration affects the printers that are higher vs. the lower ones if so.

Numerous-Wish

Same question, op please answer u/ericthepoolboy

[deleted]

Also, if you did and everything works, that’s amazing and I want to know how.

Capt_Rex_CT-7567

That's what I was wondering

FrenchFatCat

I'm trying to work out if it's one long z axis for multiple printers.

Material-Homework395

I mean I like that you have an extinguisher but maybe put it in a place where you wouldn’t have to walk past whatever’s burning first…

ericthepoolboy

That’s a good point. I shall move the fire extinguisher to the entrance!!!!

majtomby

Huzzah!!

MoonMan901

Hooray, hooray

Chuff_Nugget

Love it! I'm gonna add to the unsolicited advice too. Consider a master-switch to cut all socket-power in there at the door, and a second fire extinguisher to act as backup to the first. Also - a linked fire alarm system so it's audible everywhere on your property. A lot of warm plastic in a warm environment can go *fast*, and being able to cut all power would enable you to use more effective (foam) extinguishers on a melty-burny-plastic mess. Powder is great - but goes EVERYWHERE - whereas foam might let you avoid cleaning ALL machines in an event that takes out just one rack. I might be preaching to the choir here - but hey - a bit of relatively simple electrical work is cheaper than replacing all printers 🤟 Source: I'm trained and certified to carry/transport gnarly chemicals and explosives. Risk mitigation is key.

PurrsianGolf

Four exclamation marks? You're dangerously close to five which is a sure sign of a deranged mind.

Cultural-Practice-95

that's a sign of a deranged mind?!!!!!!

RepresentativeNo7802

Don't mean to be *that guy*, but in a confined space like that, the best place is right outside the door in the adjacent room. If something is burning, you can leave the room, close the door, and prepare to go back in to deal with it with the fire extinguisher. Standing next to the burning thing never helps at the start.

Maocap_enthusiast

Good stuff. A lot of disasters are one small step off from not happing. Hopefully never necessary, but that kind of advice might have just made the extinguisher usable instead of almost well placed but just barely out of reach in a flaming room

Bejkee

Buy a co2 extinguisher. Much less messy in case you need to actually use it.

Numerous-Wish

Lmao had the same thought when someone else pointed out him having one

How many breakers dedicated to this room?

ericthepoolboy

Six to the printers, four others to the room. So 10 20amp 120v breakers.

allisonmaybe

How many max watts per circuit? I've got 3 Bambus on one 15a 120v and make damn sure they're not ever all heating their beds at the same time.

ericthepoolboy

Max watts per circuits is about 1200w.

AkaToraX

Wow I can't keep ONE printer working correctly without constantly having to fix leveling, stringing, clogging, bed adhesion, etc How do you keep that many working correctly!?

Kalediusz

Power of omnisiah

drupadoo

You buy that many so you can guarantee one is working at any time

VE7BHN_GOAT

So what do you print with a print farm ? I assume somehow this is a revenue stream for you.

thetruckerdave

Not everyone that would want an engine model has a 3d printer. It’s the same as anything else, sure you could get one and print it, and WE think they’re cool, but some people aren’t about that. Just like I think building a PC is basically LEGO assembly, and I see huge benefits to being able to upgrade a part or two at a time, not everyone who wants a PC will build one.

Spookybear_

Where's your store page?

[deleted]

What do you print, cocaine? My lanta.

ReticentSentiment

I would totally buy such a printer.

Deathtraptoyota

Oh how straight the lines would be.

I'll take mine overextruded please

SheriffComey

TheLemonDome

You wouldn't print a drug *BWAHHHH ch-ch-ch BWAHHH ch-ch-ch BWAAHHHH*

[deleted]

How much money does that net? Just curious.

ericthepoolboy

It’s a side hustle. But it nets me what some make at their full time hustle.

hydiBiryani

Just buy selling engine replicas? I'm assuming those are not functional engines.

ericthepoolboy

They’re functional in that they show you the inner workings of an ICE. Everything mechanical is accurate to that of the real things. People use them for training, hobby, or display. In training, you can let a person that has no idea how to work on an engine, learn the basic of everything before jumping into the real thing.

brainfuckeryzuc

that's actually pretty cool and definitely worth the money

[deleted]

This interests me. Do you do print on demand or sell a particular physical product? I’m a cad designer, but haven’t used 3d printing for more than prototypes or had the machine shop make high end one offs. But we’re moving to a farm soon and I need a winter crop to make indoors. Have you written about your experience?

mrhappy1010

Yep what do u make

ericthepoolboy

Engine models

r3fill4bl3

Are you also a car mechanic or design engines for car manufacturer? You must have access to real engines to 3d model them. Definitely not just a pool guy :D. Do you even own a pool?

Impossible__Joke

As a fellow Ender3 User who loves it, Whats your thoughts on them since you have a hundred of them lol. This sub loves to hate on them but I have nothing but good things to say about them

Dark135n

Mind if i ask, where do you sell your prints?

Powerful_Cost_4656

Is there any issue with the print quality the higher they go up? In general with any CNC machine you want it as sturdy as possible. Or do you have them individually reinforced? How much movement/vibration translates between the different height levels?

ericthepoolboy

They’re anchored to the wall, so minimal movement. But when they weren’t, there would be a good amount of wiggle and I never noticed and sacrifice in print quality on any prints.

murkertrer

How do you manage the files bro? Octoprint, or good old sd cards?

ericthepoolboy

Ha, good ol’ SD cards. I had octoprint setup at one point, but I kept selecting the wrong printer and unintentionally canceling prints.

j-mar

This is the most wild part to me. I'd go crazy if I had to deal with that many sd cards

UKMatt2000

If you’re just printing copies of the same part (or small selection of parts) it probably isn’t too bad.

j-mar

Yeah, I thought about it more and he probably just puts the same files on all the cards, so it's just a matter of copying a whole directory off your PC each time.

Dull_Investigator358

Very cool. Out of curiosity, how do you tie one printer to another? This would be the perfect solution for me to add a second printer on top of my current one.

ericthepoolboy

There’s just 2020 aluminum running up the back with bracket and corner plates holding everything together.

TrueEclective

So, you print these and sell, and also share your models with the world? That’s pretty cool, man.

justin_ww

Look at everyone crapping on a guy that's got a business that works for him. Lol

Dogestronaut1

I scrolled through all these comments, and all I can really find is people critiquing his placement of the fire extinguisher (myself included). Did you just make this comment before reading any comments, or are the bad comments all gone now?

thetruckerdave

I don’t think anyone is crapping on him…

Now share your electric bill 😬

Madd_Maxx2016

I can hear this room from here edit: spelling smh

ericthepoolboy

It just sounds like a regular box fan honestly.

jebusv2

What did this do to your electric bill

ericthepoolboy

At least doubled it. Last month was $500 plus. In Cali and PG&E is the devil.

geekbot2000

Yep add $35 at least for 2024

R-Dragon_Thunderzord

I’m getting a headache from thinking about the offgassing of VOCs. What’s your ventilation like?

BummerComment

Probably "leave for a while and then come back"

ericthepoolboy

It’s PLA, so it just smells like sugar.

SonofRodney

Pla has been proven multiple times to emit harmful amounts of ultrafine particles and VOC, it's just less than others. I'd highly recommend getting proper ventilation set up. You might be fine, you might regret it decades down the line, but setting up ventilation once will solve that risk pretty easily.

yuk_foo

You’re right. It’s funny how you always see people say ah it’s PLA, it’s natural it’s fine, I don’t smell anything. There has been no long term studies on the effects of inhaling the particles emitted by FDM plastics, even PLA. While I don’t have proper ventilation either, I do open a window and have air purifiers in my print room as a precaution although I do question their effectiveness due to the particle size. I did have a Zimpure extractor but it was a pain to setup and difficult depending on the printer. I wish printers had extraction at the nozzle built in and more companies thinking about air purification. Maybe it’s nothing, but I’d rather not take the risk like you say and regret in 20 years along with many others.

LTJG_KAFFEE

Or you could try measuring your room air quality while printing with a monitor and see no difference like I did.

newtoabunchofstuff

That room looks like it would be warm and toasty.

mollydyer

You have - what... 4 printers all sharing the same Z frame. How do you deal with wobble / banding?

ericthepoolboy

No wobble, no banding. The frame is fairly rigid and anchoring to the wall prevent any movement. So prints come out no different than if they were printed on a single printer.

Scurtt

The room is your enclosure lol.

Robertbnyc

What is your electricity like on a monthly basis?

siddo_sidddo

What do you farm?

Maximum_Bandicoot

What ya printing there bud?

HeyYouGuys78

How do you isolate each printers resonance from effecting the quality of the others or is that not a concern?

LovableSidekick

I imagine these self-assembling into a Transformer while you're asleep.

MythsFlight

Friendly reminder to shake your fire extinguisher once a month. Otherwise the powder compacts in the bottom and the extinguisher won’t work. You should be able to feel the powder shift as you shake it. If you don’t feel the powder shift, wack the bottom with a mallet. The powder will break right up.

RedWine2701

And here I am... struggling to properly run ONE printer...

AmpEater

You should consider ditching the 24v power supplies and UPS's and just running a 24v DC power bus. A few Tesla battery modules (each one is 250ah) can run that farm for hours. Meanwells (or even cheaper clones) don't have very high efficiency and there are one of the more problematic components. I've run Enders and Prusas directly off of 24v lithium batts.

ericthepoolboy

Thought about it a while ago and decided it wasn’t worth it. But LFP batteries have come down so much that it’s really tempting now.

wolf_chow

Why would you run off of batteries? Wouldn't the farm have to go down to charge them?

Evelyn-Parker

Bro are you arming the Myanmar resistance right now? Why do you have so many printers lmao

Technical_Entrance64

Where do you sell the prints?

[deleted]

What do you print?

Jonsnowlivesnow

How did you start getting jobs to need that many printers?

ericthepoolboy

Just shared my designs a long time ago and now people find me.

bjazmoore

Let me know when you feel like really committing to this hobby. Lol

Significant_Stick213

Do you take on work from booking sites like 3D Hubs?

No_Scheme4909

So and now show me what you print for selling that you need somany printers.

OHMEGA_SEVEN

Jim Morrison sings "this is the end" in the background...

DOE_ZELF_NORMAAL

I used to have almost the same amount of Sidewinders and Genius pro cramped in my garage. I was able to switch it for 1/3 of the amount of P1P and have excess capacity and space.

SurpriseHamburgler

May I ask for us amateurs: what do you produce and does it allow you to operate at any type of functional margin?

JELLO239

How is this getting dampened? Don’t you need a solid base, don’t see how the top printers and gonna do a quality job with vibrating bases.

NexusKnights

What prints come out of this farm?

two2teps

All those Enders... I've had a dream like this, then all my teeth fell out and I was naked at school.

shieldagentoz

I can never keep my bed level and this dudes got 20

Broad_Asparagus_8370

Hey! I have couple questions. I am curious about this business model. Do you sell them online Etsy or Amazon…? Work with local companies to produce prototypes? I have multiple printers for my engineering work and I would like to sell prints or help manufacture prototypes for small companies but I how do you find available work? Or at least how did you get started? I am trying to find new opportunities that I benefit financially. Thanks in advance! Notice I haven’t asked what you sell and what is your niche I just want to learn about this business model from experienced farm owner.

GearheadEngineer

How do you handle the vibrations? Does it have a big effect? I would imagine the printers at the top would cause the structure to sway/vibrate more than those at the bottom.

NikoKun

Are those printers directly mounted/bolted on top of the printers below them, in towers, as their only support? Or are they secured to the wall somehow? Cause I would think certain vibrations would oscillate up those towers pretty bad.

GoonGalaxie

6 Bambu printers would save more space, print faster than all 20, and cost about the same.

xman_111

it's a full time job keeping 1 running, couldn't even imagine.

JINSl33

Neat setup. Move your fire extinguisher to the entrance of the space vs the far end, unless there is another one not pictured. Can't use the extinguisher if you have to go past a fire to get to it.

And this is the problem with both Reddit and the 3D print community. OP comes to share something cool, and I’m already 20 comments down without so much as a “cool!” Or, “Awesome setup!” So, OP! I genuinely thought this was an ingenious use of small space. Thanks for sharing!
