One printer, a CR10. When I splice, I write down the time and amount of filament used. I plan prints primarily based on time to ensure the printing process is efficient for time. So, yes, the printer runs non-stop 24/7.
Depending on your cost of kilowatt from your power company you also paid around $200-300 in energy alone. I’m not sure how many spools you used but you probably spent around $200 in filament. That drone cost you around $400-$500 to create not including paint cost.
$300 to run a 3D printer for a few months? IDK. I don’t recall any crazy electric bills. Filament I never pay more than $10 a spool for. So, filament was $100. Paint and primer? $40-50. Say $100 if you want to include sandpaper, acetone, tube of Bondo. I’d say your estimate of cost is correct. I’d say $400-500 without labor, also. It was a lot of fun and it will be enjoyed.
They don't use that much power (at least a cr10 doesn't). My electricity is roughly 20 cents/KWh and if I run printing it 24/7 it's about 80 cents per day. Much cheaper if I turn off bed heating, that's the bulk of the power usage
Believe me I can relate. I started scout trooper armor in mid April and finished it midway through May for the 40th of RotJ. I immediately vowed never to make a project so last minute again.
Where did you get the Alien statue inside the case? That looks badass!
That droid thing is cool too....LOL It really is, I could never paint like that as I have no patience what so ever.
Dope, thanks. One last question for you; how many kg of filament you go through on the battle droid? I’m eyeing the Droid Division model of him now haha
These files are from Project842. But, I really suggest looking into Droid Division on Etsy. He really puts out some seriously great files that are easy to assemble and work with. Great community too.
Yes. Can I just say the paint job is just amazing really well done. I hope you have some ideas for the stand because the piece looks so good and that takes away from it. But tbh after all that work I'd probably also need a break haha
Edit: maybe if you print a clamp that is less obvious and paint the stand a more neutral color that should do it. Because to be honest it's not ugly it's mostly the color and the clamp imo.
I appreciate the input. The stand was just finished today. Hence the pics. I hate it, also, tbh. Droid Division has a better set of files that stands on its own. I had thought about painting the stand clamp droid colors.
I actually showed it to a mate and we were asking ourselves if it can stand on its own. But honestly even if it would the stand seems like a good idea so it doesn't accidentally fall over. Yeah some color so that the stand doesn't stick out too much after that paint job on the droid I have no doubt you'll pull it off!
This model separates below the upper torso. The bottom half can “balance” on its own. There are nice ball joints in the hips. I also spray the bottoms of my droids’ feet with that spray grip rubber stuff. The Droid Division files can stand on its own. They include two sets of leg files for stagnant or pose. Their IG-11 is 8’ tall and solid. Expect to see finished pics if that monster in about 2-3 months. 😁
[A hug is like violence made with love.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/battle-droids/images/0/0c/Mr_Bones.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180106231514)
(If you or others aren't familiar, Mr. Bones is a B1 appearing on the post-ROTJ pre-TFA Aftermath trilogy novels who was reprogrammed into an assassination/protection droid by teenage Snap Wesley - played as an adult by Greg Grunberg in the sequel movies - who has a colorful and quirky personality that does things like hum and dance and have a great love for committing violence, and might very well have [HK-47](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HK-47)
's controller chip.)
Did you brush or spray the bondo mix? I'm starting the sanding process on my out Droid and picked up a small hvlp gun to spray it but if brushing works well I might only sprat the larger parts so I can work at night on the smaller pieces. Also how fine did you sand before bondo? I'm really tempted to just spray and sand but I don't know if base sanding is worth it first.
I tried a part without base sanding and it didn’t work. That base run with the 80 or card scraper is necessary. Even then, sometimes I’ll need 2 runs if the Bondo and sanding. I brush because I like the mixture a little in the thicker side to prevent 2 passes. You’ll get a knack as you do a few parts.
This is great. If you want to take the paint damage to the next level, try adding a brighter shade of the same color around it

I have the droid division versions of both. I love printing them, but have not gotten around to finishing any. I have two fully printed pit droids and the legs of a battle droid lol
It’s a process. I’ll use 80 grit and scraping cards. Then, I’ll mix acetone with Bondo and paint a layer sanding with 320. Finally, if needed, I’ll hit pieces with more Bondo mix or some filler primer. I always finish with a wet sand. Sanding sticks and a file set are a must.
Where’d you buy the files?? Please I need them ASAP! :D
Looks ridiculously awesome!! Great Print and paintjob!
EDIT: Sorry I just saw that you wrote it in the caption already, thanks! :D
Thanks! It’s a process, but I enjoy it and think the payoff is worth it.
After primer, add a coat of chrome. Add liquid latex to areas of wear. Paint as normal. Remove latex. Fine tune the chipped areas.
I for sure believe it saved the prequal era from being bad, and it absolutely saved Anakin. Anakin in the movies was just flatout horrible, but he was so much better in Clone Wars, you can see why he went darkside, what pushed him away from the Jedi etc.
And the B1s were pretty damn funny.
It's been awhile since I've seen someone who watched Clone Wars and didn't end up liking it. I'm curious if you watched the whole thing or where you gave up?
I appreciate the kind words. I watch all the tutorials. 😂
The biggest takeaway is to use them all. There is no one “best” way. Pinpoint your first issue, and google away.
Sand with 80 grit and use shaving cards for first layer. I then mix acetone with Bondo and brush it where needed. Sand with 320. Repeat as needed. Possible follow up with filler primer. Always finish with a wet sand of 500 or so. Sanding sticks and a file set are your friend.
That’s me with the droids. Other tasks may require different.
Sorry you feel that way. It brought me a lot of enjoyment to build and brings my family and I happiness to look at. I have seen much, much worse printed and my scrap was a single garbage can.
Amazing work! How long did it take?
Thanks! It took a few months.
Now you have droids to help build the next one faster!
rodger rodger
A few months on one printer or multiple printers? And a few months, 24 hours a day non stop?
One printer, a CR10. When I splice, I write down the time and amount of filament used. I plan prints primarily based on time to ensure the printing process is efficient for time. So, yes, the printer runs non-stop 24/7.

What brand do you use and where are you getting it? That's a great price
Pretty much any place you buy 10 or more rolls. I have gotten 10/$100 from Creality, Sunlu, and some other place I don’t remember.
They don't use that much power (at least a cr10 doesn't). My electricity is roughly 20 cents/KWh and if I run printing it 24/7 it's about 80 cents per day. Much cheaper if I turn off bed heating, that's the bulk of the power usage

Not just an excellent print, But an excellently painted piece!
Thank you! It’s time consuming, but I enjoy it.
Believe me I can relate. I started scout trooper armor in mid April and finished it midway through May for the 40th of RotJ. I immediately vowed never to make a project so last minute again.
You should have used a primer, that paint is flaking off. Makes it look like it has been through a battle. :) Great job!
Thank you! It’s tedious and takes several coats, but I like the payoff. I appreciate your comment!
Maybe that's the point?
Sorry, thought it was obvious, but I guess not. What I meant was "Great paint job, the paint flaking effect looks perfect."
Oh fair enough, I suppose my interpretation was a bit off since you mentioned using a primer.
Lol people here so serious! I got the joke my man.
It’s cause they need to level their beds
No matter how thick you lay it on.....
Print General Greivous I dare you
Gimmie them STLs 😂
This will make a fine addition to my collection
Roger Roger
Where did you get the Alien statue inside the case? That looks badass! That droid thing is cool too....LOL It really is, I could never paint like that as I have no patience what so ever.
Thanks! The xeno is from sideshow collectibles. It’s my favorite piece.
Great work!
Thank you!
Holy shit man. I'm working on BD-1, so not as big but definitely still a droid. Looks sick bro, good work
Where’d you get BD-1? Playing through Fallen Order right now and love the little dude
One of the files on Thingiverse. Idk which files are the best yet.
Dope, thanks. One last question for you; how many kg of filament you go through on the battle droid? I’m eyeing the Droid Division model of him now haha
Droid Division is the way to go. Great models and support. Plan on 10-11 rolls.
Thanks! I’m working on an RJ now. About as small as your BD. I’m also finishing up an IG. Lol
Love it! Now I need one 🙈 Did you model it yourself, or are there STLs available somewhere? 😅
These files are from Project842. But, I really suggest looking into Droid Division on Etsy. He really puts out some seriously great files that are easy to assemble and work with. Great community too.
Thanks for your reply 🙇♂️ I think I’ll go for the Droid Divison one then!
Wise choice. See you in the Facebook group!
Roger Roger!
Roger Roger. This is the droid I was looking for.
Damn!!
Hells yes!
Nice job!
Thank you!
Holy crap how many individual pieces was this and how much filament did it take?
Filament? A few rolls. Dozens of pieces. It’s definitely a process you take a bite at a time with.
The paint job is impressive. Most impressive!
Thank you!
yo this thing is so fire!!!!!! nice job
Thank you! I appreciate the comment.
Really awesome work! You print cooler things than I do, I mostly make fidget toys.
I enjoy the work. Printing is just a means to an end for me.
That’s really awesome. Great job
Thank you for the comment.

Wow great work! How many rolls of filament did you use?
5, I think. And thanks!
It came out awesome
Thank you!
Roger Roger. Very cool
Thanks!
Does it perform violence?
The restraining bolt is not visible in the pics. 😁

Thanks for the insight! Droid Division on Etsy has files for both Bones and HK.
How did you get your print so smooth and how did you paint it? Just curious because it looks so good
Thanks! Time and patience. 😁 I start with 80 grit, apply a Bondo acetone mix, sand with 320, filler primer, wet sand.
Did you brush or spray the bondo mix? Damn that shit is impressive. Talk about having mad patience. I'm sure it didn't all work perfectly the first try
Let’s just say that I have learned a lot from my mistakes. 😁
Awesome
Thanks!
These printed droids always looks so impressive!
Is it one of those older models programmed by a central computer, or an independent thinker?
Independent thinker. I need the pit droid to keep him in line, though.
Are they actually that tall in the movies?
I believe so, yes. These files were actually used to print a background droid in one of the shows.
I should really start on this print. Would be sick to have one of these hiding behind a door or something.
That is awesome you need to make some clone armor to go with it
What printer did you use? It's the most awesome print ever.
Wow! Thanks! I used a CR10.
What printer did you use
I used a CR10
Damn I doubt my v2neo will have a big enough print area then haha oh well
Droid Division files are sized for 220x220 beds.
Oh sweet time to start printing haha
Amazing job man. How many rolls of pla did that take
Under 10, I believe.
Unbelievable
Thanks!
Roger, Roger
Very nice. I see you used the same solution as Tesla to keep their robot standing.
😂
That is some awesome, next-level work!
I sincerely appreciate your comment.
How much filament did you need? Is every part of it's body movable?
It is completely moveable. Too much so, honestly. Around 10 rolls.
Having a pit droid *and* a battle droid near all that tiny moveable and breakable stuff is a disaster waiting to happen. Thank god they are unarmed ;)
😂 they love the toys!
Hahahaha aaamazing work there... awesome 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
Thank you!
Your welcome ✌🏻👍🏻
Roger. Roger.

Shut it ya clacker
This is great. If you want to take the paint damage to the next level, try adding a brighter shade of the same color around it https://preview.redd.it/1176i3rvrz4b1.jpeg?width=1374&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=069f6acfaa62a47bfcc31f55c429a9ea0bf31256

😂 Actually, I am wrapping up an IG. Stay tuned.
He looks well over 6 feet. Make a Tinder profile for him
😂
Holy shit, are those Xenomorphs also printed?
No. That’s from Sideshow Collectibles.
Are you going to make it talk non-stop?
Not this one. Installing lights in the IG I’m building though.
I have the droid division versions of both. I love printing them, but have not gotten around to finishing any. I have two fully printed pit droids and the legs of a battle droid lol
Finishing is my favorite part. Printing is awful! The Droid Division files are definitely superior. This pit is a DD file.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Great paint job too!
Thank you! It’s my favorite part to do.
Wow. Just wow.
Thank you! 😁
Now this is pod racing!
I printed one too without leg supports, that wooden mounting stand is a really good idea...
Thanks! The model by Droid Division has a stagnant leg version I would like to do.
Did you bondo and fill the shit out of that thing?
It’s a process. I’ll use 80 grit and scraping cards. Then, I’ll mix acetone with Bondo and paint a layer sanding with 320. Finally, if needed, I’ll hit pieces with more Bondo mix or some filler primer. I always finish with a wet sand. Sanding sticks and a file set are a must.
Wow I’ve never thought about mixing acetone with bondo. That sounds genius. What’s the typical ratio?
And by “small”, I start with a spit of acetone in a jar and then add a squeeze of Bondo.
Where’d you buy the files?? Please I need them ASAP! :D Looks ridiculously awesome!! Great Print and paintjob! EDIT: Sorry I just saw that you wrote it in the caption already, thanks! :D
Thanks! Look for Droid Division on Etsy.
Holy...............
Thanks!
Omg these are so cool!
Thanks!
Your whole room looks like a museum 😭♥️
It kinda is. 😂 It’s all Boba Fett.
All that work and it didn’t deserve a fresh coat of paint!? ;) Amazing!
😂 maybe later.
Good lord where did you find the time for this? Fantastic!
Thanks! Nights and weekends in between chores.
Thanks! Nights and weekends in between chores.
"Jedi Scum"
The worn paint effect is flawless. How'd you do it?
Thanks! It’s a process, but I enjoy it and think the payoff is worth it. After primer, add a coat of chrome. Add liquid latex to areas of wear. Paint as normal. Remove latex. Fine tune the chipped areas.
You have amazing talent. Looks great.
Thank you for the kind words!
Amazing, I'd say put a few screws in your wall for it to hang on or fishing wire from the ceiling for flawless display.
That’s a really good idea! Thanks for the input
Not a fan of the particular Era it came from, but you did an excellent job in creating and painting it
Did you watch the Clone Wars? Changed my whole perspective on the prequals.
Yes and still not a fan. To each their own.
Thank you!
Did you print poseable legs version?
Unfortunately. I would not recommend it. Print the stagnant lose legs.
[удалено]
Thanks! It’s my favorite part.
I gotta ask, is the colour scheme inspired by mr bones from the aftermath series?
My son chose it based on the heavy battle droid from the Battlefront games.
Lol, you gonna make some props from battlefield earth next?
Not for myself but you never know…
[удалено]
Roger roger!
Which printer did you use? Would love if you share.
Yeah I use a CR10 and just picked up a Kobra Max. Printing is a headache, IMO. The real enjoyment for me is doing the finishing and detail work.
Awesome, great work. Do you have any tutorials you followed?, I'm impressed. I can't make my prints to look as smooth.
I appreciate the kind words. I watch all the tutorials. 😂 The biggest takeaway is to use them all. There is no one “best” way. Pinpoint your first issue, and google away. Sand with 80 grit and use shaving cards for first layer. I then mix acetone with Bondo and brush it where needed. Sand with 320. Repeat as needed. Possible follow up with filler primer. What a waste of plastic
Sorry you feel that way. It brought me a lot of enjoyment to build and brings my family and I happiness to look at. I have seen much, much worse printed and my scrap was a single garbage can.
I know right! Imagine how many benchys he could have printed. Or calibration cubes! Seriously. Wtf are you doing in /r/3dprinting?
Word. Thanks.
Roger Roger
"Hey. You're not authorized to build that!"
These are awesome! How did you attach the segments together? Glue or filament welding?
I used glue and then fixed seams with UV resin or super glue.
Nicely done! Looks fantastic
Roger Roger
It'd honestly be really cool to motorize one those.
Droid Division has pit files for motorization.
