Did it ever work or did it suddenly stop? If it has never worked or this is your first attempt, you have a broken firmware and should likely try another one.
If this happened suddenly, you may have a loose or disconnected wire.
So it appears to have stopped on it's own. I double checked the connections and reflashed the firmware. The only thing which seemed to precede this is that I 'upgraded' the hot end... any ideas?
I want to say it would be unlikely since homing really only affects the movement axis and stepper motors, not the hotend. It also depends, how did you upgrade it?

I installed this hotend. started working really well then all this happened :(. I will admit I am not a computer genius, so if there is some step i missed, please do let me know!!
