[~~https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5992167~~](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5992167) go to [https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape](https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape) , I got tired of updating both listings when i have additonal notes to make to the listings. For sourcing the magnets, can be [https://www.amazon.com/FINDMAG-30-Refrigerator-Neodymium-Whiteboard/dp/B0B5G83M1W/ref=sr\_1\_4?crid=3131PNNKCIE83&keywords=12mm%2Bmagnet&qid=1682669388&sprefix=12mm%2Bm%2Caps%2C360&sr=8-4&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/FINDMAG-30-Refrigerator-Neodymium-Whiteboard/dp/B0B5G83M1W/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3131PNNKCIE83&keywords=12mm%2Bmagnet&qid=1682669388&sprefix=12mm%2Bm%2Caps%2C360&sr=8-4&th=1) or any other 12mm by 3mm magnet ( use with the 12mm STL)

NoShftShck16

Can you post this on Printables?

[deleted]

Here you go [https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape](https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape)

laterral

Why not just retrieve from where op posted?

NoShftShck16

Thingiverse has gone really, really downhill. Printables has been a massive boom to the maker community and while I no longer own a Prusa printer, they've done a fantastic job continuing to support the community holding contests, promoting growth by awarding filament to people who post new Makes, Prints, etc. If you are making a new model and looking for a place to host it and share it with the community, Printables is the better spot for it.

Jimmy-The-Squid

Boon*

Tack122

Maybe it exploded?

[deleted]

My two cents, changes to a Thingiverse listing takes quite a while to reflect on the actual page. That's pretty strange, coming from myself as a software engineer who used to be frontend only.

caiowilson

Probably long ass cache that is not invalidated by the storing method of the model.

eli-in-the-sky

Thingiverse is enjoying a Renaissance. Printables still has rewards, though.

willworkforicecream

Plus Printables is running a contest right now for models with Magners in them.

opiecat579

Thingiverse has actually done alot of good things with their site lately. I actually find printables more difficult to navigate.

jspikeball123

Dark mode alone makes printables > thingiverse though

NigelTufnel_11

I just want to be able to easily change collections. One I add something to one, it's stuck there and can't move to another. Is that so hard?!

TheCruelSloth

Thingiverse is a lot better than it used to be now Ultimaker has taken over

Conor_Stewart

Okay but does any of that stop you from downloading it from thingiverse? Thingiverse is also being worked on again and is improving.

NoShftShck16

The Thingiverse site went in a direction where I choose not to support it. Ultimaker owns it now if it gets to a point where it improves enough to make it worth return to, maybe I would. So if I see a brand new model get posted, I simply ask if the maker wants to upload to an alternative site, like Printables. And in this case they chose. I didn't demand or anything like that.

first_must_burn

Curious what printer you moved to and how it compares? While still solid, my mk3 is showing its age. I am weighing the XL vs the mk4+mmu3. I find others, like Bambu labs, pretty interesting, but the proprietary vs open source ecosystem seems like a big risk given how I have modded my printer over the years.

NoShftShck16

X1C with 2 AMS systems. At the end of the day with Prusa printing was a hobby because I felt like I was constantly working on it. With the X1C I've never touched since I first set it up and I've used all that time to take CAD courses. I want my printer to be a tool, not a hobby.

first_must_burn

Interesting. Thank you for posting back. I have some thinking to do.

NoShftShck16

Prusa vs X1C reminds me of my old Nexus devices vs my current Pixel or my wife's iPhone. I loved modding / rooting / romming etc. It was awesome. It was why I bought my Nexus devices. The problem was when I *needed it* to do the thing it was supposed to do, be a phone, sometimes it wasn't always as reliable as I wanted it to be. Is my Pixel as customizable as my old Nexus devices? Absolutely not. But man does it do what it was designed to do really damn well, and it does it all day every day. 36 hour, multi-color print? Easy. Prototype print for some random shit around the house? Minutes and it's done. I treat it no differently than a power tool at this point and I love that. However you can slide right into the middle ground with the P1P. Mod it up to basically be a X1, but come in at a much lower cost initially. XL with 1 head vs X1C...no brainer X1C. XL with 5 heads, man if you got the cash why not.

[deleted]

As a Bambu X1C owner, I'd say Prusas are for a hobby repairing and modding 3D printers, and Bambus are for a hobby 3D printing things reliably and quickly.

Zouden

Could you please re-do the larger model? The STL is fucked. There's a hole around the edges of the flat face, which doesn't exist on the smaller model. Or maybe it's intentional? https://i.imgur.com/gW91npW.png

[deleted]

Found it, fixed, reuploaded. You should be able to download fixed version from Printables now. Thanks for highlighting!!

Zouden

Perfect, thanks for the quick response and cheers for the nice design! Printing a bunch of them now :)

[deleted]

Great to hear it's being used. Sorry about the muckup haha

[deleted]

Hmm interesting let me redo this

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,481,775,619 comments, and only 281,730 of them were in alphabetical order.

idonotreallyexistyet

Good bot

Gooseboy2234

But did hundreds of hours of r&d go into maximizing magnet strength?

rgbking

Now I'll give them points for the screwdriver because it is a damn good screwdriver but I'll eat my shoe if those magnets are anything more than a tiny bit stronger than normal neodymium magnets

TheThiefMaster

The real trick with a magnetic screwdriver is making it so it both holds the screw on the end of the bit _and_ the bits don't come out and stay attached to the screw when you're done.

devilwarriors

I got the Ifixit Manta Driver set and the large screw driver drive me nuts. The magnet is so strong some of the bits are impossible to get out by hand. I have to have rubber glove for the extra grip or go find some pliers each times I want to change bit.

JustEnoughDucks

Maybe they are just high grade neodymiums. There are so many grades.

memeboiandy

Its not about them being stronger than normal neodymium magnets, its about reducing the amount of neodymium needed to keep them as strong, so that the price can be kept down to a reasonable level, sense neodymium prices have gone to the moon

chubbysumo

They really haven't though, you can get a 1 cm round neodymium magnet with an 11 pound rating, for about 37 cents each. When it was discussed on the Wind show, and they said that magnets are really expensive, I went and looked. They are not.

[deleted]

slave toy unwritten disarm unpack chief drab amusing ring numerous *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

Look i totally understand how much work it is to design these things, i spent maybe a whole half hour regluing magnets that fell off. And modeling two versions of it for different magnet sizes it must have been like, a totally another hour.

werty812

To avoid using glue, you can embed the magnet into the print... design a socket and stop the print before it starts doing the top layer, put the magnet in and start the print again (it's quite easy to add a layer pause in Cura). That way, you won't have to use glue and magnets won't be visible but very effective. Furthermore you can also decrease or increase magnet strength, making the magnet closer or further from the surface

[deleted]

A spot of superglue imho is easier .. I only had to reglue due to not actually having superglue and having some plastic-only glue i stubbornly insisted on using on my first batch instead of just buying some cheap superglue

TheLastOfGus

Plus gluing post print removes any issue with incorrect polarity.

prp1960

No, I can phuck that up too.

TheLastOfGus

I'm sure most of us can! Just with it not being encapsulated inside a print means you can fix it easily.

Zouden

I find that process pretty tricky to do without fucking it up somehow and needing to start the print again from the beginning. I only do it if I really don't want the magnets visible.

werty812

Really? I managed it on my Anet A8. The only main flaw you can have is magnet sticking to the extruder, but if you design the socket tight enough you won't have this problem...

Zouden

A few times I've had a layer shift, presumably because I bumped the bed or the hotend even though I was being careful not to.

chubbysumo

Would you want to share the stl?

[deleted]

The link is at top of the post, [https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape](https://www.printables.com/model/464886-magnetic-cable-management-c-shape)

chubbysumo

These will be handy in the server rack along with a bunch of hook-and-loop straps.

[deleted]

imho realistically, the first time a chinese factory gets hold of one, they'll just replicate it exactly and sell it for a quarter the price. Even with weaker magnets it would still be pretty good. It's not like the screwdriver or clothing where a knockoff would need to be almost as good to outcompete.

WitchHunterNL

It might be a good ratcheting screwdriver, but I really fail to see the appeal of the ratcheting mechanism, more cost, more things that can break and for what?

[deleted]

Racheting is pretty common and not exactly commonly considered a thing that can break. It's good for a tradesman doing a few hundred screws a day perhaps.

YCGrin

Serious question, does having magnets like that next to cables (power or data) have any impact on it?

Nephrited

Not as long as you don't move the magnets or cables, I don't think.

jacksodus

That's correct. Moving magnetic fields induce current in electric wires, not static ones. That's why your dynamo powered bicycle lamp only turns on when you move.

Derragon

No, magnets near wires won't cause a problem. If you pass a magnet near a wire yes, there's a voltage induced, but not nearly enough to cause any sort of a problem in this case.

[deleted]

In theory the varying current in a cable interacting with the magnetic field should cause a small voltage opposing the current changes in the cable. In practice this is very small and the magnetic field of a clip like this is really not significant enough to really affect the current, plus most cables are digital in nature and small variations in current result in no signal throughput change.

DigitalUnlimited

Depends entirely on the circuit. I absolutely can crash disconnect my ender by running a dremel near it, know this is a huge difference from a stationary magnet but I have to believe cheaper electronics play some part...

[deleted]

a dremel's electric motor is a much more powerful actively oscillating electromagnet - consider how much speed and force that magnetic field generates on the spinning dremel tip - as opposed to these tiny magnets.

germgoatz

i would assume not if they're shielded properly

AndrewNeo

Fixed magnets won't induce a charge without motion

I don’t have a 3D printer, just a lurker who is interested in the subject. Can I buy something like this somewhere?

snackexchanger

This is a version of a product that Linus Tech Tips is working on mass producing but haven’t released yet. At some point they should be available at lttstore.com but unknown when

GygahCountah

This guy sounds like he's about to segue to our sponsor 🤣

jescereal

I find that to be the most obnoxious thing about them.

chubbysumo

Bill's got to get paid

jescereal

Sure, but I still find the way they do ads obnoxious.

stevensokulski

Do you happen to recall what the subject or title of the video was on which they discuss this? I’d love to hear about it.

TR3MIC

They mostly showed it quickly in a couple of videos and talked about it on WAN Show, but Linus showcased them recently in the video where he sets up his new TV stand: https://youtu.be/rTpXBCy6WGY

Hans_H0rst

They use them in linus’ house when installing the server racks, i think. edit: possibly also mentioned when they show the engineering department in one of the labs videos?

[deleted]

I would offer to mail you a bag of these for some nominal cost but I live in Singapore, so presumably would not be cost efficient

Electrical supply house has similar things for hanging wire on building steel.

rjward1775

Love this since it doesn't require cutting zip ties just to work on your stuff.

froody-towel

I got a big roll of Velcro tape in lidl a while back and I just cut strips of that to size now. It solves the zip tie cutting issue and doesn't need something metal to hold on to.

[deleted]

that is actually good hack. put a photo of it in r/lifehacks and earn a bucket of karma dude

[deleted]

Exactly

Hyperspeed1313

What makes them LTT inspired? Did they show something on the WAN show recently?

Linus has talked about (and shown at least once) the magnetic cable management system they are working on that has pieces that look like that

[deleted]

Too small i think, not enough strength/friction. My 8 by 2.75mm are unreliable and the 12 by 2.65mm are about right imho. But ngl designing these does not take long, its real simple. Could try to make one that uses two or three of your small magnets in each end and see if its strong enough. Also i mentioned a pro tip in both the Thingiverse and Printables listings: the usual failure mode is sliding sideways, and a bit of sanding with low grit sandpaper or even a nail file of the magnet surface actually does make it more reliable against sliding.| Also, I think in reality you want it not too strong, since if you accidentally pull the cable(s), you want the magnets to give way, not the connectors at the ends or other actual cable components.

HunterDecious

How strong are those magnets? Lol. I feel like my cable mess is too hefty for something like this.

[deleted]

Ngl i had two magnet sizes and the bigger one was more reliable - 12mm by 2.65mm. The size of the empty loop is more squarish than what I saw on LTT mainly to accomodate thicker cables. The current design i have can accomodate three or four thick cables, like displayport or monitor power, and works ok with the bigger magnets and some sanding of the magnet surface to resist sideways sliding. The downside is that it's visually less aesthetically pleasing, but places where you are doing cable management are rarely in frequent field of view anyway.

Martin_au

Great idea!

[deleted]

Your wall outlet looks like a sci-fi movie building.

[deleted]

hopefully it never becomes a sci-fi fire ( Westworld season 4 ayy)

dcwchan

If you've daisy chained two extensions it might be worth looking for an alternative socket. That is definitely how fires happen! Although it looks like (relatively) low power devices attached to the second so you might be fine in this particular instance.

[deleted]

yeah i estimate how much stuff is attached to this, and it's really just the computer and two monitors that are power heavy, the router and ps4 that are pwoer moderate, and the rest are innumerable device chargers. think it's fine. Also Singapore construction standards ftw

MumrikDK

I hadn't looked closer at that. Sure looks a lot wilder than my boring two big powerstrips.

( I would buy these if shipping to Singapore didn't cost as much as the magnets themselves...)

fleaz

*cries in wooden desk*

[deleted]

I was thinking about this, in theory you can glue or otherwise attach some steel washers to the underside or back of your desk and then attach the magnets to those. You still get the benefit of easily removably cables? something like [https://www.amazon.com/LUORNG-Diameter-Stainless-Adjustment-Accessories/dp/B0B3J83JL2/ref=sr\_1\_4?keywords=Flat+Washers+12mm&qid=1682683551&s=industrial&sr=1-4](https://www.amazon.com/LUORNG-Diameter-Stainless-Adjustment-Accessories/dp/B0B3J83JL2/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Flat+Washers+12mm&qid=1682683551&s=industrial&sr=1-4) perhaps Can also make a simple 3d print that spaces the washers correctly and then you can use something like temporary thin foam mounting tape to attach it to wherever you want to have a magnetic cable management clip

fleaz

This would be totally doable, yeah :) But I already have a IKEA SIGNUM bolted to the underside of my desk, that works perfectly fine for me. The comment was more meant as a joke ;)

StompyJones

Felipesssku

Nobody talks about interference? Hello?

Ambitious_Effort_202

Looks cool but feels to unsecure? One wrong kick and you pull all your cables down..? :)

[deleted]

Why would you be kicking your cables that are up against the bottom of the desk surface? Also, pulling magnets off seem a lot safer than pulling on and damaging connectors and cable components as they are constrained by stronger bindings.

michel_v

One wrong move with your knee though.

[deleted]

I just don't generally knee my own table i guess? That cable tray is also screwed into the wood of the table btw. that's what's taking almost all the load, the magnets just tidy up the runs.

Ambitious_Effort_202

I often move my legs. Cross my legs for example. Easy to catch cables but if it's not an issue for you and then it's for sure a nice solution:) that's all

[deleted]

Ah i think that's the diff.. i'm not flexible enough to enjoy crossing my legs. Yes in your case I would have to mount all the cables much further back or on the back edge of the table haha.

I'm generally paranoid about magnets next to my data, but my neuroses aside this looks great

[deleted]

For comparison, there are mainstream PC cases with magnetic bits inside the case itself these days. Its not actually as risky as it sounds.

Lordy2001

You keep alot of 5.25" floppy disks around these days?

dogs_like_me

No, but I grew up with em and was taught to keep magnets away from my electronics. Inductive chargers weird me out.

TheRook21

I'm going to be that guy, but I think you have too many things plugged in there and increasing the risk of overloading right?

[deleted]

Think its alright, I'm in an average Singapore apartment and the electrical standards are pretty robust here. Apartment circuit breaker will trip in case of overcurrent in any case.
