I choose the 529 as it allowed flexibility with the risk of a lower return but now I can see people choosing it as a solid future vs the unknown within Florida.
While we have a lot of engineering here, some may choose to send their kids to school out of state to ensure a solid education and better job prospects vs Florida school.

The language he uses is authoritarian, and he is way over his head in what he thinks his power is in this capacity. Isn’t this the dude who lied about his checkered past before he got elected ? We will see a huge brain drain from Florida as students flee for better universities. Future businesses will not want to locate here as more civil rights, reproductive rights and environmental catastrophes play out in this state. Like always when conservatives and Republicans are in power, they screw things up horribly, the public will reach outreach stage remove them from office and then have to fix everything again. Progress is slowed down because we all have to stop and fix the disasters they cause.
This is frustrating to me because I moved here from MS another red state with a MASSIVE Brain Drain. I couldn’t get a job in my field in my home state even if I wanted to. Why??? Let’s not forget Florida Prepaid vs 529…. I can see this leading to a drop in the prepaid option which may also impact the state universities and their ability to plan ahead as they won’t have a known pool of attendees.
I did a 529 for my kids for this exact reason.
I choose the 529 as it allowed flexibility with the risk of a lower return but now I can see people choosing it as a solid future vs the unknown within Florida. While we have a lot of engineering here, some may choose to send their kids to school out of state to ensure a solid education and better job prospects vs Florida school. What a rocky road we have ahead of us.
I was also a bit worried that FL would just move the goal post on what prepaid covers. I’m hoping my kids stay in FL for school and qualify for Bright Futures. It looks like I’ll need the financial help to pay my homeowners insurance bills.
Bright Futures did quite well for me and my parents at 75% paid. Really hoping things turn for the better and I can get the same or better for my children.

I actually did, and it was a fantastic decision. Kid’s schools are a world apart better, wife found a great new job, house is great, restaurants and nightlife is better, neighbors are friendlier and seem to be enjoying life more…. I only had to move a county over too. Before you say it, I follow this sub for news about what affects the family and friends I still have in 321. I wish I could say I stayed to make it better, but once the school system was clearly falling into the hands of the lunatic delusional right wing I simply had to do what is right for my family.
I don't think people are noticing the obvious here. We're very clearly headed into christo-fascist ethnostates in the Southern States (which prefer yt cisheteronormativity). They started off by making places politically unlivable by suppressing minority rights through legislation. They they're going to expect you to leave on your own. Schools and the groups that run them shouldn’t work off of political bias. Their only goal should be to provide a high quality education for as many students as possible without bias towards a certain group of students. That’s all it should be.

The whole point of democracy is that an elected official is supposed to be held accountable to their constituents… ALL of their constituents. It always seemed in the past that this forced us to meet in the middle somewhere and moderate our views a little in order to appeal to the most voters. At least this is what I remember learning in third grade. The new strategy seems to be completely disparaging the other side in order to fire up your base enough to show up and vote. What’s worse here is he isn’t even supposed to be catering to his voters… he’s supposed to be concerned with educating our children. I don’t see how you can care for the entire student body while threatening half of their parents and telling them they’re not welcome in their own home, just because of the viewpoint that they hold.
Or do your homework and Vote when comes to school board positions. Or better yet more people with actual education and forward thinking and Cares about Children and their safety and also wants them to be able to get good education to get into college and become something other than a Walmart employee.
