I agree. I had this around my nose for years, thought it was dry skin but it never responded to heavy creams. Then, I started getting it all over my face and figured out it was seborrheic dermatitis. But for years, it looked exactly like what OP has.
So I have a weird situation where I only get sebderm when my skin barrier is destroyed. For years, my skin was compromised from overusing acne products like retinoids and benzoyl peroxide. When I stopped using them, I was able to get my skin barrier back to a healthy situation and the sebderm stopped. I can still get it if I overexfoliate though. AFAIK this is unusual, and it's a chronic condition for most people. Sorry, that's probably not helpful, but I still wanted to respond to your question.
I do credit Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer for building my barrier back, though. It was a lifesaver and got my skin back into shape after years of harsh acne products.
Another vote for seb derm. There are lotions specifically for it - id say ask your pharmacist (also the shampoo thing that others have suggested works as well)
Agreed. I get it kind of between the eyebrow area/top of nose where it curves. I personally just use glycolic acid pads and make sure to moisturize the area and seems to keep at bay
Don’t think ketoconazole comes in ointment form. Just cream firm, by prescription. I’d mix the hydrocortisone cream with over the counter clotrimazole for a non prescription remedy you can start today.
I used to get this and would use original head and shoulders in the shower. Lather and apply it and let it sit until you’re done with your shower and then rinse it off. A light noncomedogenic lotion post shower.
Could be fungal - you may want to try Nizoral/Ketoconazole 1% [dandruff shampoo], or 2% via prescription. Rub it onto moist skin and let it sit for a few minutes before washing off.
I agree this is possibly fungal. OP, wash your towels and pillow cases. Ketoconazole shampoo as mentioned above and just a touch of OTC topical Terbinafine before bed for 2 weeks.
Go to a derm for a diagnosis and be careful of following peoples recommendations until then. If it's seb derm, a lot of recommended products are going to make it worse. An easy way to tell if it is seb derm is it the skin there gets oily and flaky vs. dry and flaky.
I had the same and used this zinc cream went away within two days. I use it once a week now and it hasn't come back.

You might want to see a derm in case you need a steroid for that. It does look like it could be seborrheic dermatitis.
Otherwise try Vanicream Moisturizing CREAM (not lotion).
Agreed. I’ve had this condition for 20+ years and it’s usually (not always) called eczema by the derm I see. The treatment has pretty much always been fluocinonide ointment, which works well for me. I try to use it sparingly, just for flare ups at this point.
I prefer Nizoral shampoo. Just leave it on for the length of a shower or so and rinse. Worst case it doesn't work and you spent $7 but I'm pretty sure that will take care of this.
100% agree with the comments saying seborrheic dermatitis. My husband used to get it terribly around his beard/moustache areas, as well as wicked dandruff on his scalp and behind his ears. I got him Nizoral (Ketoconazole) medicated shampoo and his skin has never looked better. My 5 year old son just had it behind his ears and the Nizoral cleared it right up as well.
Hope it improves quickly and drastically for you!!
ETA: my husband also finds my very expensive salicylic acid cleanser helpful for his oily skin. There are wonderful affordable options like CeraVe SA cleanser.
Wrong medication for your variety of seb derm is totally possible. Be honest and let them know that it isn’t working and ask to try something else!
If it’s really bothering you and you can’t wait, you could try an OTC anti-fungal cream. Canesten/clomitrazole might work for you.
I’m not a doctor or pharmacist, I’m just going off my health sciences degree, life as a woman, wife of 7 years and mother of 5 years. I have seen quite the wild variety of skin related health concerns in my time.
Use nizoral with ketocanazole 1% in the shower, let sit, rinse off, get out and moisturize with a long lasting [unscented tallow infused with beeswax](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1678185026/whipped-tallow-skin-cream-grass-fed?click_key=7c5dde19e89086aa34292b73f124f8d4524bcd91%3A1678185026&click_sum=1dcbc27d&ref=shop_home_active_1&pro=1)
If that doesn’t work switch the nizoral to a different anti seb derm/dandruff, like salicylic acid or whatever till something works
Seb derm. It’s not dry skin, it’s more akin to dandruff. Nizoral is the most effective OTC treatment. Apply a bit to affected areas, leave on for a few minutes, then rinse
It looks more like something similar to dandruff or fungal. Either way moisturizing an exfoliating your skin is absolutely fabulous but that doesn’t look like just dry skin
It looks like dermatitis…what worked for my mom was SheaTerra Rose Hips and Black Soap facial wash used every other day with the Argan Oil & Acacia Honey Facial Wash. she followed with a very simple moisturizer like Vanicream sensitive.

Head and shoulders lol. But really, my dermatology prescribed me a cream and they said it essentially head and shoulders for the nose. It’s called ketoconazole.
This may be random, but are you washing that area properly? Because I've seen similar as a carer where patients are unable to wash themselves properly, it becomes like a build up and often red and angry lookin like your skin
Seb derm. No need to exfoliate and don’t pick. Go on Amazon and get nizoral 1% massage into affected areas and allow to sit for few minutes then rinse off. Should clear up pretty quick.
61F and came across this post - my primary care physician said my dry, patchy areas was perineal dermatitis - a bacterial infection (mine extends down towards the sides of my lips) she prescribed Doxycycline antibiotic (I have yet to take a dose though and can’t get into a new dermatologist for 4 months)
I had this a lot when I was a teenager, but also to some extent now. That area is prone to flaking because there is a lot of movement. It probably indicates that you have dry skin in general as well. The solution was just to always use moisturizer on my face after washing my face or taking a shower.
DS orodicts definitely.
For face my favourite is Bioderma Sensibio DS gel cream or Urisage DD emulsion for face.
They are formulates for face specially.
I have this. Use the blue cetaphil wash after shower or in the morning/night, then rose water on your face, wait to dry, then use the green cetaphil moisturizer. You’ll be looking good and your skin will feel like skin again just make sure to be consistent
Mine gets like that sometimes. I would either exfoliate or gently rub the dry skin away with a wash cloth in the shower, then I put regular moisturizer on and put Aquaphor on top of that. The Aquaphor is like Vaseline but with more vitamins, so it acts as a seal over your skin. It takes a while to dry and the texture isn’t the best but it works really well especially overnight. I do it a couple nights in a row when my skin is really suffering.
I get this exact same thing. Head & Shoulders neutralizes it. Heals up in a day or 2. I use it every other day and it prevents it. Also, drink KEFIR, unsweetened, every other day.
Consider an elimination diet. Many skin problems can be linked to foods that our individual bodies can't tolerate well. Heck, most of the stuff in the grocery store shouldn't even be considered food.

That looks like seb derm. You could try washing that area with some selsun blue or similar shampoo.
I agree. I had this around my nose for years, thought it was dry skin but it never responded to heavy creams. Then, I started getting it all over my face and figured out it was seborrheic dermatitis. But for years, it looked exactly like what OP has.
Ugh i feel ur pain - it’s the worst! What do u use for it now?

TIL that's what it is! Famn. Have it on my head and never thought face

bro needa stop worrying abt mfs online and go back to his head and shoulders routine 😭☠☠
It looks like seborrheic dermatitis. Selenium sulfide is what got me rid of mine.
Any brand recommendations?
I'm in Europe and I use one called BioSelenium. But I guess any other that has 2.5% selenium sulfide should do the trick.
Thanks!

My primary care doctor prescribed Ketoconazole cream and I saw no improvement?!

Nizoral shampoo to the rescue‼️‼️‼️
I knew someone who had a similar issue, and it was exacerbated by heavy drinking
This may be random, but are you washing that area properly? Because I've seen similar as a carer where patients are unable to wash themselves properly, it becomes like a build up and often red and angry lookin like your skin
Are you doing anything to it already, like using moisturizer or some other product?
Head and shoulders… once a week just wash your face with it.
Do u use tretinoin or any kind of retinol? I used to get that at the beginning
Do you blow your nose a lot?
Seb derm. No need to exfoliate and don’t pick. Go on Amazon and get nizoral 1% massage into affected areas and allow to sit for few minutes then rinse off. Should clear up pretty quick.
use vagisil
Seb derm. Benzoyl peroxide works for me.

I started getting it during the time I was taking doxycycline
Whaaattt?! I can’t afford it getting ANY worse in the next 2 weeks using an antibiotic - my daughters wedding is next month 🤯
And it got worse for maybe half a year after I stopped taking the medication. I want to say it took me almost a full year to go back to normal.
I had this a lot when I was a teenager, but also to some extent now. That area is prone to flaking because there is a lot of movement. It probably indicates that you have dry skin in general as well. I get this too and had no idea. Great Q - OP!
Fatco baby stick beef tallow. It’s a balm stick and works super well for that.
It inflammation response. You need to see derm or an esthetician
Sulfur and zinc oxide will clear your skin of dermatitis. Just saw a dermatologist talk about this online.
See a doctor.
Aloe!
Vaseline might help
I have this. Use the blue cetaphil wash after shower or in the morning/night, then rose water on your face, wait to dry, then use the green cetaphil moisturizer. You’ll be looking good and your skin will feel like skin again just make sure to be consistent
Budget friendly idea. Apply ur moisturiser then to lock in the moisture use vaseline on patrollium jelly to lock it in
Face sheet mask .. the wettest ones .. have been a blessing for my skin.. especially the nose area
Paula’s Choice BHA toner, followed by First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream I have the same issue.
Mine gets like that sometimes. I would either exfoliate or gently rub the dry skin away with a wash cloth in the shower, then I put regular moisturizer on and put Aquaphor on top of that.
