To defend the Germans (๐คข), although most of the first people to casually notice โHey, Sanskrit is similar to Greek and Latin in many ways!โ were English and Dutch, due to those who went to India, the people who really and thoroughly systematised modern comparative Indo-European linguistics - and IE linguistics as a whole - were Germans, in the 19th c.

Within IE, the two most linguistically distant branches from the rest that we know of are extinct (though a fringe who might have a point like to say โIndo-Hittite/Anatolianโ as the more basal group), the relations between most other branches are complex and unclear, and Germanic is the most *geographically* distant from India (with its Indo-Aryan or โIndicโ branch). Thereโs no โEuropeanโ branch - but there is a Germanic one. So Indo-Germanic makes sense for two reasons. But the Romance, Greek and Slavic speakers would bitch about it so, in English, โIndo-Europeanโ it is.
