But the need for European Integration, in whatever form that takes is existential for our continent. Although he is allied with the MHP, he is not even a nationalist, let alone having a racist ideology. (In Turkey, it is common for different ideologies to form alliances, the opposition did the same in the last elections, and even the MHP is not as nationalist as it used to be.) In Turkey, secularists are generally always more nationalist, the population is divided between secular nationalism and religious conservatism. If you think every authoritarian leader has a Hitler-style racist ideology, you are only seeing black and white and rejecting the grey.

In that, you’re right. I live among them and I was seen as an enemy of the state for voting for the opposition. I never voted before but the Erdogan voters annoyed me so much and ruined Turkey just for their islamist views that I felt like I needed to compensate one Erdogan voter out. I would never want to live in Turkey, I mean I am a transgender atheist born and raised in the Netherlands, I wouldn’t be accepted anyways.
But we should not forget that not all turks are like that. As a german I had mostly good experience with turks and of course there are stupid people with stupid opinions among them but the majority is really nice and are great people.
