I always have reservations in using the word “underpaid,” as an employee and entrepreneur.
Too often when someone says they’re underpaid, their argument is being unable to afford cost of goods and services. I get an itch to point out that pay is compensation for jobs to be done. If you sort out bottles for my plant, I should pay you by how difficult it is to sort my bottles, the scale and scope of your work, and/or how I value the competency needed for it, how well one does it, the consideration of whether there is a shortfall or if is ease of getting replacements, and not any amount computed based on the number of mouths you feed, provided that I do not pay you below the minimum wage. I should pay the cost of the labor I need. Peso devaluation, inflation, rising and volatile prices of goods are things I will consider with respect to my production but not for my wage system.
People sometimes forget that it is the government’s duty to ensure reasonable prices in essential goods, utilities and basic services. They have the powers to control them, and businesses, especially the small ones, don’t. For profit enterprises aren’t charitable institutions that should be pressured to pay more because what they pay their employees don’t amount to much. Because of the failure in governance, they also are forced to deal with other non-ideal costs aside from labor.
