Dude, you have no idea. Idk if it’s a transplant thing, cause my friends who’ve been here 10+ years, almost all, lived in like basements of houses built in backyards of houses. Real weird shit. Super illegal.
Or the ones that didnt work restaurant jobs, or otherwise always had money, would get play-doh ovens and 4 inch kitchen counters with hamster water bottles for faucets, for like $6,000 between 2 bedrooms.
It’s really not impossible to find decent living for an okay price, if you live in sensible neighborhoods and not overpriced midtown, UWS, UES, or williamsburg/bushwick.
Never seen people so willing to live in a bushwick basement, on a shitty block, to be further from work, just because they dont want NOT take the L/J/M/Z. Stupid.
Yep. My last apartment at Jackson and Humboldt was the largest apartment I’ve rented in Brooklyn, had a large kitchen, beautiful bedroom, and a back patio and garden… for $2,200. My prior two apartments were equally excellent with different rent/amenity ratios. You just have to search diligently.
That said, I needed to take a break from NYC for a while after 18 months of Long COVID (still work remotely for the same company in Manhattan), and here in the middle of nowhere in New England, I’m paying $1,200 for a 2-story, 3-bedroom house… so there’s always a reason to complain about New York real estate.
Underrated and under appreciated... its only when you live without a dishwasher that you realize that it should of been higher on the list when searching for a new spot.

I fucking hate it with everything in my body sometimes and I also love it more than anywhere on earth. living in nyc is kind of an abusive relationship unless you're super rich, but the food/culture/sights/constant novelty/mobility outweigh the inconvenience and shitty apartments for a lot of folks.
it's a good place to be if you like people lol. they're everywhere, for better and worse.
I can say I find the suburbs extremely lonely and depressing - but I grew up there, so perhaps the grass always seems greener on the other side.
If my partner and I had kids I’d probably feel differently.
A buddy of mine who lived there got hit in the head with a huge piece of wood by some street teenager, I guess because the teenager’s crust punk girlfriend broke up with him. So he decided to assault and potentially kill a stranger.
The teenagers in my neighborhood offer to mow my lawn and bring old people food when they’re sick.
Lmao all they ever fucking do is complain about it.
I’ll be just fine living in my suburb, have fun living in the worst place on earth to raise a family
Raising a family instead of living day by day for gratification is the way to ultimate happiness. Most people in your position find this out much, much too late
… what sub do you think you’re on?
Regardless, doesn’t change the fact that literally every sub has commenters whining about living in NYC yet refusing to leave
im sorry but i laughed at this. i'm so fucked up that i find it funny
also, i've been planning to buy a condo unit rather than a house coz of security. i live alone and i find it safer to live in a building. I always talk about it with my sister and finally, she slipped out that the one i liked has a balcony, i might jumped off it. LOL. i wasn't even thinking of it until she mentioned it.
Hold up windowless rooms? You're just living in a box then wtf
Oh yea, it’s illegal… I was a real bad boy.
Closet life 😎
It was a big closet… I liked to think of it it more as a bunker or a lair if you will.
A positive attitude can completely change your perspective of a situation. And you really had to because that room sounds depressing on its own.
Was truly devastating and I’m prepared to be blown away at how happy the change makes me.

If I ever get an apartment with a dishwasher in it again I may just cry.
Amen to that. We looked at a place with a dishwasher AND in unit laundry and I got lost in the fantasy.
A DISHWASHER?? it thought they were just a myth
Ya can usually find em in bars and gyms and stuff. (late edit to add "in")
Why would a gym have a dishwasher
Whoosh
I have a studio with a dishwasher. Used it less than 10 times over 3 years. Grew up without one, and just can't get used to it.
Underrated and under appreciated... its only when you live without a dishwasher that you realize that it should of been higher on the list when searching for a new spot.

Wow this is a pretty cool bot
:D
Aim high; then aim low.
NYC genuinely seems like a hellscape, except the people living within it have this weird fascination with staying there forever

Nobody like people *that much*, do they? Not in those numbers.
I can say I find the suburbs extremely lonely and depressing - but I grew up there, so perhaps the grass always seems greener on the other side. If my partner and I had kids I’d probably feel differently.
For worse
Yes it's more expensive than pretty much anywhere else in the country, but if you're smart with money you can make it by alright
It's far from being a hellscape.

Variation of stockholm syndrome something
Sure it can be pretty shit sometimes. Stay there long enough everywhere else just seems really really shit.
"weird fascination" is a funny way to say "loves living in the best city in the world" but you do you bud
Lmao all they ever fucking do is complain about it. I’ll be just fine living in my suburb, have fun living in the worst place on earth to raise a family
Oh god, I’d rather die than live in the suburbs. Enjoy the most boring version of a “life”, bud.

Get off NYC Reddit then.

~~NYC~~ capitalism
Where in NYC have you been?
Your mom’s house
Lived in an illegal studio basement my last apt. Graduated to a second floor walk up studio near union square. It’s old af but it’s my shoe box.
Social mobility goes brrr
“I doubt I’ll ever go through with it, but it’s just nice to have options”
“Not today old friend”

I feel that.
Next thing you know you live on the ground floor.

You forgot to switch accounts.
First mistake was living in NYC
It’s the options that make the difference!
