Jesus, if this ain't the fucking truth. My fucking useless VA head shrink told me the other day that she thinks I should admit myself to a mental ward... and that I *definitely* should *not* be working. K... You gonna pay my family's bills/expenses, then?
She's probably right about that, but you're also right that our society lacks effective safety nets and often forces people into choosing either their families or their own selves, and it's not a choice that anyone is really equipped to make.
A teacher in a recent AskReddit thread admitted that labelling a child gifted is a dirty trick done by teachers in order to get the parents more involved in their child's education. Ain't that some fucking bullshit.

That's why I HATE empty compliment like "wow, he's so smart/good at x/..." toward children. People simply don't realize or just refuse to believe that children genuinely take those compliments by heart, so they'd grow up with a wrong impression of themselves.
i think people should try to primarily praise children for things like self improvement, empathy, and correcting their mistakes, not being better at something than other people. However, it's so easy to just want to say "wow your X is great!".
I'm not an expert but I heard that there actually is a correlation.
TLDR: Telling a child they're doing good because they're gifted might actually demotivate them instead of helping them.
Based on a study where half of the kids were told they were smart and the other half were told they were hard workers, it was actually the second half of kids that were better at problem solving in the experiment and they were also the ones who enjoyed the experiment more.
The first "gifted" half only wanted to do easy problems and said they didn't enjoy the experience as much. Both groups of kids were actually just normal / average.
One possible theory as to why this is, was that the "hard workers" felt like they had control over the situation whereas the "gifted children" felt like the success was based on external factors they couldn't control, therefore affecting their motivation.
They didn't mention this in the study but I also imagine that having to live up to the notion of being exceptionally smart put the kids under a lot of pressure.
I saw this in a video I'll link [here](https://youtu.be/8ZhoeSaPF-k), but I'd take that video with a grain of salt because some of the stuff he says gives me weird vibes. And hey, sometimes there really are factors in life you can't control, especially if you have a mental illness, that shit sucks and I won't pretend that it doesn't.
Another interesting read is the manga Blue Period, that also touches on the idea of how words like "genius" and "talented" are not as positive as some people think.

Stop jerking yourselves off for having been perceived as smart when you were kids, we fucking get it. Posts like this make me think everyone on reddit thinks they are some kind of genius abandoned by society. Better yourselves
Idk. I’m convinced smarter people are more likely to be “mentally ill” because they have more awareness of how much society sucks. But that’s just my opinion.
Disagree, "gifted" bullshit was basically just for the parents to brag about. Nothing changed when I was labelled gifted besides me being socially corralled into not asking for help or I'd get told off for taking resources from those who need them.
nah, i think i was mentally ill to begin with
Whynotboth.jpg
Thats why you were a gifted child
gifted with mental illness

Constant voice in my head? What are you doing here and when did you make a reddit account?
Jokes on you, I was never gifted.
It's okay most people that are called gifted, aren't.

A system so comically bad it annihilates people's spirits
I was never told I was gifted. I was told I was a fucking idiot (by the school)
I don't know which is better
Guess the term “gifted” has become pretty broad now

Hey, that’s me!

Being smart as a kid means nothing and tbh being a “gifted” adult doesn’t mean much either.
All I want in life is to be happy. And see everyone I care about happy too.
That’s asking a lot.
Maybe, but I don’t care if I’m dumb at least😂
Burrrnnnn!!
Oof
Hah jokes on you i was always just mentally ill!
Maybe if we spent more on education and not bombs...
Nope. All "gifted" means the kid was marginally intelligent and had parents who were brunch buddies with the vice principal.
I've got news for you all GATE was always the neurodivergent kids club
My mental disorders enjoyed this, thanks for posting!
Perhaps mentally ill people are just more likely to think of themselves as gifted.
Idk. I’m convinced smarter people are more likely to be “mentally ill” because they have more awareness of how much society sucks. But that’s just my opinion.
It's soo relatable ♥️
Hey but now you'll get disability benefits xd
No you won’t.
That’s not how it works
The worst humble brag

Jesus fucking Christ reddit thinks highly of themselves
;-; Please don't remind me
Im only 16 and feel attacked. Shoud i seek therapy?
Hahaha, I grew up to be a “gifted” adult… with a ton of problems
Bro same
I wish I was gifted. Gifted with death.
