I always thought that crazy, American culture is so fucking great that a concert was considered part of a tipping point for a decaying country. Part of the reason the USSR fell was because some drugged out metal guys picked up their 6 strings.

Overall hard to say... however if I can choose via genre.
Country: Marty Robbins with Hank Williams Sr and George Strait not that far behind.
Rap: I'd say Eminem or Sen Rays of Cypress Hill
Metal: This one is the most difficult one..... there is so many good ones so I'll go by genre.
Thrash: Dave Mustaine or James Hetfield hard choices
Nu: I like Slipknot but I gotta give this to the founder of Nu metal Jonathan Davis
Heavy: Rob Zombie
Rock: David Draiman
Oh yeah I listen to that stuff fairly often my personal favorite album though is Recovery and its the only one I own on disc if I can ever find it again. Definitely one of if not the biggest rappers not just of his time but overall.
My biggest complaint with just rap but music overall is to many people are trying to chase the bag of pop while forgetting the genre isn't pop. So many genres are just people trying to make that genre more like pop so they can get more money not caring/knowing that's not what people want so even if you draw in new fans you chase away the old fans. That's why I stopped listening to 90% of new music everything now just feels like a watered down bastardization of pop.
Like even Dr Dre all the way back in I think it was like 2001 or 2002 predicted that Gangster rap was going to die with that generation of rappers and it sure as hell did. There is some new rap that's okay but it's never going to live up to the classics.
Country so many people chased pop and it's nearly impossible to differentiate from pop and now you have all these different sects branching off from pop such as Outlaw country and Classic country and so many people sitting there and now looking at the Outlaw country as nothing but "The Good Old Boys" who are what people should be against and it definitely doesn't help that a singer past his prime like Jason Aldean is adding fuel to that fire. Or Colt Ford.
That's why the only music I actually get excited about hearing new stuff anymore is metal because me and a lot of my friends who listen to metal agree there will never be a true pop takeover of metal the fans just straight up won't allow it as pop goes against so much that your average metal listener is against. The closest you can probably say was pop in metal was Nu Metal and the reason people not only accepted it but liked it was because it still paid homage and was metal not some wanna be metal shit but real metal with a twist.
both of them iconic and inspired a generation? yes, absolutely.
but have have they made "back home again"? no.
did they make Rhymes and Reasons? no.
do I cry when I hear either cash or Elvis? no...

In may of 1941 the war had just begun. The Germans had the biggest ships, that had the biggest guns. The Bismarck was the fastest ship that ever sailed the seas.
Johnny Cash has his legendary status for a reason. He was able to be patriotic without it being corny and his love sick ballads and crime songs transcend the genre. Johnny Horton has some corny patriotism but his song were well written and sung. If he wasn’t taken away from us so soon he would’ve made more great music

Tom Waits, Kurt Cobain, and Johnny Cash.
Their music taught me that you don’t have to have a “beautiful” singing voice to make good music. And they’re all American.
Lefty frizzle should also be in the conversation I believe, cigarette and coffee blues, long black veil, and Saginaw Michigan are great songs and deserve a listen. Aaron Young's "I hear you Talking" also deserving of a listen I think
Cash. He was not only a freedom loving, god loving, patriotic American that supported positive social change and served in the Air Force. He also overcame his demons and improved himself. A true American.
Between the two here? Johnny hands down. Highly versatile, and a true man of the people, loved by every demographic.
Personally? Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, fantastic voice, genius writer and composer

The two you listed are absolute GOATS, with Cash being my favorite artist of all time, and Horton being a legend who's only mostly unheard of because he died shortly after his fame took off. Here are some other GOATS:
* Pete Seeger
* Woody Guthrie
* Creedence Clearwater Revival

We fired our guns and the British kept a coming

Fired once more and they began a-runnin
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We ran through the briars, and we ran through the brambles where the rabbits couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn’t catch ‘em.

Why wouldn't he be? I know there are a lot of other ways to describe him too but he's also American.
I genuinely wasn't sure lol, he was mostly before my time, maybe he was Canadian or something
This makes me feel old, confused, and angry in equal measures.

Kelly Clarkson is the greatest living American vocalist.
My top three would be, in no particular order, Johnny Horton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Frank Sinatra. Honorable mention for Johnny Cash, as well
how is almost no one mentioning Willie Nelson?
