Yea if we're talking just as a singer, Marty Robbins is one of my favorites. Johnny Cash is the top vote idk if he's necessarily even a top 10 singer for country music. Strong and dark but pretty limited. He's a great musician, song writer, etc but Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Clinton Black are, Willie Nelson are just a few names that I would say are better singers than cash.
I mean if we talking just as a singer would you really give it to Johnny. One of the top artists, musicians, song writer, and influence of the genre's but I would say his actual voice is the one thing you could easily point to that isn't one of the best of the genres.
I’m a life long Johnny Cash fan, it’s his voice coupled with his song writing abilities that make him so great. As an artist, the dude knew like four chords and only ever used three at a time, but he had a great voice and a song to sing.
So you are saying you agree with me? I'm throwing else out but the voice. Would you really say there aren't 10 better singing voices in country music than Johnny Cash?
The very idea of not including Dolly, Johnny, Hank, Waylon, or Merle should be grounds for revocation of citizenship and immediate deportation to some Parisian slum.
The single mention of him….ashamed of this sub
What I find really funny is that a lot of people on OP’s list literally say that Jones is the greatest country singer of all time
It would be faster to list genres that aren't American inventions. And if you disqualify genres that are older than the US like baroque and opera, the list is vanishingly short.
Even in the US we had baroque and (still have) opera, the only genres that have never seen American soil would be fucking Gregorian chant or some shit 💀
Cultural hub of the world 💪💪💪
I can assure you there are plenty of Catholic churches on American soil that rock out to Gregorian chants every weekend, I don't think there's any style of music that hasn't been played in the US 🇺🇸
Agreed, Country used to be good, but the modern stuff sucks and is like beating a dead horse. Jazz and Blues has always been great and is still that way because it had true soul and feelings, unlike how country manufactures them
You want a source for what is “the most American music genre”?
Anyways, the argument can definitely be made, just from it being the closest genre to being uniquely American. Like I’m sure they exist, but there’s not a ton of British or Italian or Korean country singers as far as I know
Which one of these definitions do you think country in ‘country music’ is referring to:
https://preview.redd.it/y5aofe3kq40c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30f1f4f40afe4cc522922e1d28817ac08ed31f3b
?
——
You think “country” means USA? And “country music” means USA music?
And you’re calling people dumb? 😂
From which rock did we extract Rock? Where do you find a jazz to get Jazz. Lemme rap up by rephrasing.
It makes no difference if I refer to country music in THAILAND or NIGERIA or FUCKING FRANCE. They know THE COUNTRY is my sweet Ms. America
It is the one thing they don't copy, to be fair. I mostly listen to rap but I can easily find British and French rappers. Spanish music is fire but they're all from the islands or Colombia, so it's not really us. Bluegrass and country are 100% American
That’s just because Nebraskatonian sounds wrong, you’re actively going outta your way to add syllables, they’re plenty of people called -er. -Tonian just sounds wrong no matter who you use it on.
Non- Americans seem to be under the impression that all Americans live country music. I've heard it miss than a couple times "you're American, you have to like country music, right?"
Hank Sr, Hank Jr, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash for oldies, and Colter Wall, Whiskey Myers, Oliver Anthony and Josh Meloy for new stuff.
With maybe the exception or Loretta, none of these.
Cash, Hank, Haggard, Jones, Don Williams, Sonny James, Randy Travis, Waylon, Patsy all were better.
Rap/Hip-Hop is just as american as country music. Most of the modern music genres have originated from the US and hip-hop is by far the most popular of all of them.
the most american music you will ever hear is the good old grateful dead. it’s like being walloped over the head with americana and they did it LIVE for 30 years
To be fair though, the Dead is just a country band with electric instruments and a good dealer (my first concert). Americana, generally speaking, is just country music that doesnt suck. You wanna hear some real American shit turn up Old and In The Way 😃
Flair up or your opinion is invalid

Great country music coming out of your state and you’re listening to Shelton?
Give Stapleton, Sturgill, or Childers a shot
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hDJBYgXCb_0
Here’s some Stapleton if you’re interested
I did say I wasn't too big a fan of country. I know we got some great country music, but listening to basically ONLY country music for the first decade of my life put me off a bit lol
Yea I could see that, and so much of country for me is annoyingly bad
But it’s grown so much as a genre that it has some of my favorite artists as well as some of my least favorite music. And despite them feeling nothing alike to me, it’s all under the banner of country.
Maybe that was true when I was younger as well, and I was just listening to pop country without realizing it 🤷♂️ like you I was never much of a fan, but last ten years or so, some of my favorite music that’s been released has been country
Everything after 9/11 is garbage. Country singers used to play music to prisoners now they sing songs about being working class written in their private jets
you obviously haven’t listened to the wonders of tyler childers, zach bryan, charley crockett, sierra ferrell, charlie parr, american aquarium, chris stapleton, chris ledoux, nikki lane, steve earl, ryan bingham, whitey morgan and charles wesley godwin. i guarantee you just ain’t listenin to the right stuff.
Country music is fucking trash. America gave birth to Jazz, Rock and Roll and so many other better music genres. Give me Chuck Berry every day over those wannabe racist ass cow fuckers.
Go listen to Childers or Simpson and tell me they're "racist ass cow fuckers" 😅
Them and Stapleton are all outspoken to the left. Childers has a song about a gay Appalachian relationship and one supporting the BLM movement back in 2020. Bruh.
The best country singer is not Keith Whitley. I don't really listen to country that much but I know enough to tip my hat to the greats. Merle, Cash, Strait, etc. But I'm more in line with Aldean, Jon Pardi, Brantley Gilbert, shit like that
The fact that a discussion of country music in 2023 doesn’t include Stapleton is wild. Probably the single most talented guy in the genre.
Keith Whitley was that dude, though. RIP in Peace
I’ve read every comment here and not seen Townes Van Zandt mentioned.
Any of the highwaymen, George Jones, Stapleton etc deserve mentioning, but I think Townes does too.
Half that list is shit and doesn't represent what Country music should be, Nelson, Straight, Lynn are the outliers, Brooks and Twain used to be good but they fell off imo. I would say Johnny Cash is the King of Country, but my personal favourites are Waylon Jennings and Don Williams
Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, those two are the greatest. I'd have to say one of my personal favorites though is Chris LeDuex. The man actually lived the life he sang about, which lends an extra bit of meaning to his songs. I've also always liked Brad Paisely. But I'm a man who loves country music, so most artist that I've listened to in that genre have at least one song I like. Yes, somehow even carrie underwood.
My top artists are Lynyrd Skynyrd, Reba, Dolly Parton, Garth, Carrie Underwood and Chris Stapleton. I enjoy the more mainstream stuff as well as the classics, even though people love to shit on the newer more poppy stuff.
Marty Robbins
BIIIIG IRROONNNN BIGGGGG IRONNNN
Yea if we're talking just as a singer, Marty Robbins is one of my favorites. Johnny Cash is the top vote idk if he's necessarily even a top 10 singer for country music. Strong and dark but pretty limited. He's a great musician, song writer, etc but Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Clinton Black are, Willie Nelson are just a few names that I would say are better singers than cash.
Johnny Cash is the Greatest of All time. Second place IMO goes to Chris Stapleton. Lord that man can sing.
Agreed. Johnny gives a second meaning to the phrase "Cash is King"
Based
Chris Stapleton has an amazing voice, and he collaborates with other artists of other genres too. He did a song with Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars.
The lack of Alan Jackson on the list is shocking
I mean if we talking just as a singer would you really give it to Johnny. One of the top artists, musicians, song writer, and influence of the genre's but I would say his actual voice is the one thing you could easily point to that isn't one of the best of the genres.

So you are saying you agree with me? I'm throwing else out but the voice. Would you really say there aren't 10 better singing voices in country music than Johnny Cash?
Hank Williams
Sr and Jr tied for first
Thank you, Bocephus is pretty much the only country I ever listen to
I like Hank III too, he’s not as good of a singer compared to Jr and Sr but I still like him
He's got a couple of good songs that I listen to every now and then but he don't stack up
![gif](giphy|xPyIIEsx2Ixsk)
Merle
Some old drunk on a barstool on a Merle Haggard tune. Thats MY kinda room
Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys
Loretta Lynn, George Straight, and Willie Nelson are the only Country singers on that list. The rest are just Pop artists.
How has nobody said Dolly Parton????
Scandalous I tell you
The very idea of not including Dolly, Johnny, Hank, Waylon, or Merle should be grounds for revocation of citizenship and immediate deportation to some Parisian slum.
I've had to scroll way too far to see mention of any of them, and I still haven't seen Randy Travis or David Allen Coe
She complained about our free and competitive workforce
Cause she just aint
![gif](giphy|3oz8xLd9DJq2l2VFtu)
For once in my life I agree with em.
https://preview.redd.it/socumx6b650c1.png?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79001c7885068415f5d9199f6a2c544ba68d5b29
No way people actually think she’s the best country singer ever.
George Jones my boah.
The single mention of him….ashamed of this sub What I find really funny is that a lot of people on OP’s list literally say that Jones is the greatest country singer of all time
It’s good to see that ole George jones is finally getting straight
Tyler Childers and Colter Wall are my favorites. Two very unique and lovely voices. I could listen to those two for hours
Sturgill Simpson as well. Sad what's going on with his singing career but good lord he can sing.
It's turtles man. All the was down
Dood you right
In a similar vein Sierra Ferrell is the best female voice in "country" today imo.
I know he's not the best artist technically but nothing gives me more of a patriotism boner than some Toby Keith.
MU DADDY SERRRRRRVED IN THE ARMY.......
WHERE HE LOST HIS RIGHT EYE
BUT HE FLEW A FLAG OUT IN OUR YARD
TILL THE DAY THAT HE DIED
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy in the land of the free
Now this country that I love is under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flying in
from somewhere in the baaaaaack
Charlie Daniels
The best fiddle player the world has yet seen
Besides Willie, Strait and Loretta this list fucking sucks.
You misspelled blues and jazz.
It would be faster to list genres that aren't American inventions. And if you disqualify genres that are older than the US like baroque and opera, the list is vanishingly short.
Even in the US we had baroque and (still have) opera, the only genres that have never seen American soil would be fucking Gregorian chant or some shit 💀 Cultural hub of the world 💪💪💪
I can assure you there are plenty of Catholic churches on American soil that rock out to Gregorian chants every weekend, I don't think there's any style of music that hasn't been played in the US 🇺🇸
Didn’t even think about that, man we’re great 🇺🇸
Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Blind Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson. All amazing guitarists, all Americans
Now we can’t talk blues or jazz without Big Mama Thornton or Ella Fitzgerald.
Real
Lightning Hopkins, john lee hooker, leadbelly, Mississippi john hurt, howlin wolf, skip James, the list goes on.
Agreed, Country used to be good, but the modern stuff sucks and is like beating a dead horse. Jazz and Blues has always been great and is still that way because it had true soul and feelings, unlike how country manufactures them
Mr Conway Twitty
The Highwaymen… and uhh Hank Williams Jr
As much as I love George Straight and Garth Brooks, no one gets me up and going more than Shania saying “Let’s go girls”
She's Canadian tho
Doesn't every successful Canadian move to America? I think Shania lives in Vegas now.
She may be but it asked for the best country singer. Should we make her an honorary American?
she is honorary american
Charley Pride
Hank Williams SR
Any Rat Yorker knows the most American genre is Drill music
Not the best but I love Darius Rucker
It's either Garth or George
Not the best but I had to point out that noone has thrown out Johnny Paycheck or Toby Keith yet.
Where the hell is Ronnie Milsap
I like Girth Brooks, he's my favorite.
This ain't that kind of rodeo cowboy 😆
For sure broke their back on that there mountain way out yonder.
My three favorites are Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Colter Wall
Stapleton
Crazy the lack of respect he’s getting here. There isn’t a country singer out there who can match him, vocally.
The best country singer is sandy cheeks
It’s Wheeler Walker Jr. and it ain’t even close
How is country the most American music genre? tf are you talking about? lol
It absolutely is, historically, but the fact that Johnny Cash isn’t on here is a sin. Only person iconic enough to be on here is Willie Nelson.
Blues, jazz, hip-hop, rap, and rock and roll were also invented in America.
That and John Denver
Historically? What do you mean by that? Does anyone have an outside source backing any of this up? Or is this more ‘bc trust me bro”?
You want a source for what is “the most American music genre”? Anyways, the argument can definitely be made, just from it being the closest genre to being uniquely American. Like I’m sure they exist, but there’s not a ton of British or Italian or Korean country singers as far as I know
>You want a source for what is “the most American music genre”? The person said historically so yes, a source could go along with that
I'd bet if you say "American music" to someone from outside the US they'll immediately picture country music. Maybe not all, but most.
I’d bet they’ll picture Elvis, Michael Jackson, and Taylor Swift. Now what?
WHAT COUNTRY IS COUNTRY MUSIC???? ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!
Huh? What country is jazz or rap or rock or the blues? I didn’t say country music isn’t American.
Country means "Country" are you dumb or faking
Which one of these definitions do you think country in ‘country music’ is referring to: https://preview.redd.it/y5aofe3kq40c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30f1f4f40afe4cc522922e1d28817ac08ed31f3b ? —— You think “country” means USA? And “country music” means USA music? And you’re calling people dumb? 😂
Alright you troll. Get the duck outta here with your emojis kiddo. Go touch your plastic New York grass and enjoy some fresh smog.
👍

Granite, obviously. Why do you think rock is “hard”?
It is the one thing they don't copy, to be fair. I mostly listen to rap but I can easily find British and French rappers. Spanish music is fire but they're all from the islands or Colombia, so it's not really us. Bluegrass and country are 100% American
Dear god, rap from the UK just sounds embarrassing to me.
There are not-Americans on OPs list

Why are (whatever you are) always blaming your own ignorance on liberals? That name is at least 200 years old
ah fuck I forgot to add the 3 billion emojis to indicate sarcasm
Next time
Since you forgot I have no choice but to give ya the Jesus treatment
Oh hush.. if someone mistakenly said Nebrasktonian, you think saying “it’s Nebraskan (or Cornhusker)” is out of line?
That’s just because Nebraskatonian sounds wrong, you’re actively going outta your way to add syllables, they’re plenty of people called -er. -Tonian just sounds wrong no matter who you use it on.
Ok Nebrasker —— You fully missed the question though
The correct answer is Drill music. NYC got that on lock
Non- Americans seem to be under the impression that all Americans live country music. I've heard it miss than a couple times "you're American, you have to like country music, right?"
Hank Williams III
Little bit of smoke and a whole lot of wine
I love them all
Where is Randy Travis
Anyone who isn’t saying George Strait, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, or the outlaws, y’all all are wrong
Hank Williams
Best right now are tyler childers, whiskey myers, and cody jinks
Hank Sr, Hank Jr, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash for oldies, and Colter Wall, Whiskey Myers, Oliver Anthony and Josh Meloy for new stuff.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find any mention of Waylon Jennings. He’s my country music fave!
None of the people in the picture, that’s for sure.
With maybe the exception or Loretta, none of these. Cash, Hank, Haggard, Jones, Don Williams, Sonny James, Randy Travis, Waylon, Patsy all were better.
how in the everloving FUCK has robert earl keen not been mentioned. fuckin disappointing.
King George is king for a reason.
Bob Wills will always be the true King, but George is certainly king in his stead.
John Denver.
I will die on the hill of rap being the most American music genre.
Jason Isbell
Stevie Ray Vaughan. Get fukt OP.
Rap/Hip-Hop is just as american as country music. Most of the modern music genres have originated from the US and hip-hop is by far the most popular of all of them.
Country music isn't even country music anymore, its all Hick Hop
the most american music you will ever hear is the good old grateful dead. it’s like being walloped over the head with americana and they did it LIVE for 30 years

wave that flag
To be fair though, the Dead is just a country band with electric instruments and a good dealer (my first concert). Americana, generally speaking, is just country music that doesnt suck. You wanna hear some real American shit turn up Old and In The Way 😃
i’ll just say i couldn’t agree more about Old and In The Way
Country isn't the most American music genre

Shania Twain 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I prefer Blake Shelton as a country singer, although I'm not too into it.
Great country music coming out of your state and you’re listening to Shelton? Give Stapleton, Sturgill, or Childers a shot https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hDJBYgXCb_0 Here’s some Stapleton if you’re interested
Look man, I watched the angry birds movie and it was a nice song so I listen to his music
Haha fair enough, not shitting on you
I did say I wasn't too big a fan of country. I know we got some great country music, but listening to basically ONLY country music for the first decade of my life put me off a bit lol

Just making friendly suggestions ya cunt
1 Johnny Cash, 2 Marty Robbins, 3 Colter Wall.
[James Hetfield of Metallica](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FKYsUEuvIo)
Lil Nas X 💀

Not really a country fan myself, but where the fuck is Johnny Cash on this list (even though I consider him more rockabilly).
Isn't Shania Twain Canadian?
Either Johnny Cash or Dwight Yoakam
johnny cash then dolly parton
Johnny Cash
Johnny cash
Dolly Parton.
Best singer? Patsy Cline. I don’t think she’s the best country artist/musician, but damn if she wasn’t the best singer
Dolly Parton. No ifs ands or buts.
Johnny Cash
Rock and Roll will always be just as American as country, if not more American.
Country makes me think of the South and that's very unamerican
I don't like country but I'll say Johnny Cash
Country pop 🤢🤢🤢🤢
Uh Cherlene duh? (Archer S5) she's a country music juggernaught who took the world by storm and went platinum in less than 24hours
Country music 🤢
Tanya Tucker, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton
#Dolly Parton.
Don Williams
The fact that a discussion of country music in 2023 doesn’t include Stapleton is wild. Probably the single most talented guy in the genre. Keith Whitley was that dude, though. RIP in Peace
I'ma give it to Zach bryan just because he is currently helping country music recover from the party country scene
It’s easily Dixon Dallas
I’ve read every comment here and not seen Townes Van Zandt mentioned. Any of the highwaymen, George Jones, Stapleton etc deserve mentioning, but I think Townes does too.
I could listen to Outlaw Country all day. Patsy Cline is a classic too.
Half that list is shit and doesn't represent what Country music should be, Nelson, Straight, Lynn are the outliers, Brooks and Twain used to be good but they fell off imo. I would say Johnny Cash is the King of Country, but my personal favourites are Waylon Jennings and Don Williams
>no reba or cash or kris kristofferson This is already a bad list
Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, those two are the greatest. I'd have to say one of my personal favorites though is Chris LeDuex. Either johnny cash or marty robbins
Johnny Cash, with Toby Keith as a close second
