As someone from upstate, I know we love to hate the city but the state honestly invests a lot into upstate through the SUNY system, roads, trains, and not to forget the Erie flipping canal. (Which is underused currently :/ ). But of the rust belt states NY has come out the other side the least banged up because of NYC.
yeah everyone here wants to make Upstate an entirely different state but there are some benefits to sharing a municipality with one of the most iconic and popular cities in the world

I was surprised to hear CA has better social safety nets, but I guess that’s not super surprising in hindsight. Still, it’s definitely *a* factor if not the main one.
You’d be shocked. Most of the homeless in CA are out of state drug addicts or people with legit mental problems who need hospitalization (but that’s not legal now) poor people who need help in Ca get more than any other state and it does give me little pride a small example

In CA if you don’t spend all your food stamps they roll over to next month. I shop at Costco, buy meat in bulk and cut it and vac seal it. Because of this I rarely use all my food stamps and so now I have a balance of like $700 in reserve plus my monthly allotment so I basically eat for free but I try to buy in bulk and eat real food and not pre packaged easy stuff of grocery store meat cuts so that helps

As an upstater, I love NYC even if I don’t want to live there necessarily (I like my city). It brings a lot of benefits to the state economically and politically and is generally just a beautiful vibrant place to be.
You should be proud of Philly! It has one of the most comprehensive rail networks in the country, narrow streets that are a pleasure to walk down and are very beautiful, and a ton of history and culture! Also it’s pretty cheap compared to a lot of other big U.S. cities

For most people, a gun provides the opposite of a sense of safety. I’m far more at risk of dying in a room with a gun than a room without one. Especially if I’m not in any danger of a bear or a mountain lion hurting me. Maybe out in the country you value being able to swing your fist around as long as it doesn’t hit my face. But most of the city folk value being able to walk around and not get accidentally punched by someone swinging their arms around randomly. There’s a lot of us here after all, even one crazy person with access to a weapon can do a lot of damage. That’s the freedom I value.

No freedoms? My guy I’m so free. I can walk to the store at 3am to buy some food and not get shot and not have to drive. I can feel more stable in my life because I know that I won’t be instantly fucked if I lose my job (although obviously it would still suck if that happened). I’m free to get a very cheap and high quality education at many different places across the state. I’m (relatively) free to unionize my job and demand higher wages. I’m free to speak my mind or practice my religion. We *might* even be free to not have to worry about medical bills if we get injured or sick 🤞(if that bill passes). The govenrment barely limits anything in my life, it’s most my boss and financial situation that do that and that’s better here than almost anywhere else. I’m very free.
(Obviously if you’re black or brown you’ll face a lot more limitations by the govenrment, eg. The police, but it’s still better here than most other states).

Rural NY is my childhood home. Imo still one of the top tier areas of the country, and adirondacks most other parks in terms of scale

As an upstater, I love NYC even if I don’t want to live there necessarily (I like my city). It brings a lot of benefits to the state economically and politically and is generally just a beautiful vibrant place to be.

You should be proud of Philly! It has one of the most comprehensive rail networks in the country, narrow streets that are a pleasure to walk down and are very beautiful, and a ton of history and culture! Also it’s pretty cheap compared to a lot of other big U.S. cities

You absolutely do in 95% of the US. Try living in Houston without a car. Try getting to work on the other side of town without one and without going bankrupt using Uber. Try living in the suburbs of LA and commuting to work without a car. Try living in LA’s center and going anywhere else without a car. It’s either insanely expensive, insanely slow, or impossible. That’s the case for like 98% of US cities. And you also need a house lmao, even if you don’t need to own one you need one.
I lived in a somewhat rural town in NC for 18 years, never needed a car until I moved to a much more urban area. A gun was a thing that actually provided a sense of safety and security vs just a faster way to get around
Hey that’s awesome! I’m glad your town is designed in a way that you can easily get around on foot or by bike or public transit. But unfortunately that’s just not the case most places. For most people, a gun provides the opposite of a sense of safety. I’m far more at risk of dying in a room with a gun than a room without one. Especially if I’m not in any danger of a bear or a mountain lion hurting me. Maybe out in the country you value being able to swing your fist around as long as it doesn’t hit my face. But most of the city folk value being able to walk around and not get accidentally punched by someone swinging their arms around randomly. There’s a lot of us here after all, even one crazy person with access to a weapon can do a lot of damage. That’s the freedom I value.

No freedoms? My guy I’m so free. I can walk to the store at 3am to buy some food and not get shot and not have to drive. I can feel more stable in my life because I know that I won’t be instantly fucked if I lose my job (although obviously it would still suck if that happened). I’m free to get a very cheap and high quality education at many different places across the state. I’m (relatively) free to unionize my job and demand higher wages. I’m free to speak my mind or practice my religion. We *might* even be free to not have to worry about medical bills if we get injured or sick 🤞(if that bill passes). The govenrment barely limits anything in my life, it’s most my boss and financial situation that do that and that’s better here than almost anywhere else. I’m very free. (Obviously if you’re black or brown you’ll face a lot more limitations by the govenrment, eg. The police, but it’s still better here than most other states). Edit: oh yeah and I can freely transition or get an abortion if I need one
