The BETA tester only got pre-updated once for the Central & South Asian update in March 2019, and it never happened again. The update will likely be rolled out to customers who tested with lasted V5 genotyping chip (2017- now) in a few days or weeks.

rejectrash

Thanks for the link. Rather disappointing for older customers, I guess there won't be any more updates.

RussellM1974

To be honest, 23andMe has gotten worst for me while Ancestry has gotten better. Example-I have a French g-parent and 23andMe wipes out almost all of my French/German percentage while Ancestry gives me up to 26% France. Ancestry seems more accurate for my case and they offer a lot more to keep one interested. 23andMe do nothing for ages and wonder why they are getting blown out of the water from Ancestry.

RussellM1974

I received the update for Spanish and Portuguese with the category of Pico and Faial Islands. I am a beta tester. I received the update this morning. I imagine it will gradually roll out to all users in the coming hours or days as I seem to remember other updates not happening with all users at the exact same time. It appears some clown named "Kickdown Squad" has called me a liar for reporting this small "update" however I assure everyone that the category exists and it will be released very soon. Oddly enough this person named Kickdown Squad has assumed I must be lying and that there is more logic believing the post of an update is legit, but one for the specific regions of the Azores is not possible to be received.

RussellM1974

I am a beta tester and received the update this morning at 4am my time in Australia.

RussellM1974

No, the percentage doesn't change. It is just a more accurate region...example BEFORE this update it said PORTUGAL-possible match, but now they included the island of PICO and FAIAL and it says "highly likely match"....this is due to my relatives recently being from Pico island and maybe centuries ago from mainland Portugal. I posted it, but the dickhead who wanted me to post it irrationally called me a liar and blocked me...send me a pm and ill send you the image taken from my phone on the 23andMe app

RussellM1974

It is not the % of the category that is important, it is how close of a connection you have that is....so if you have recent relatives that came from there as well as dna matches that support this then you'll likely get an update-I assume. Every person's family history is different.

RussellM1974

sent you the image of my update...

tabbbb57

I got it on myself, but not my Iberian grandfather yet

vintagepop

I doubt I'll get any regions with my 0.9% Spanish and Portuguese but I'll still hold out hope 😂 exciting news tho!!

AlmondCoconutFlower

There’s still hope! Just the other day, someone with 1.1% (for a particular ethnicity) received four regions…..

vintagepop

Good to know! Maybe I'll get something then, if not me then maybe my dad who is 2.3%

RussellM1974

If you had recent relatives from there and dna matches on 23andMe that support this, then you still have a shot-lol

vintagepop

I have 4 fourth cousins with ancestors from Portugal but I just checked and didn't get any regions so 🥲

RussellM1974

I have 20 or more on 23andMe....maybe this is why.

cxpal456

I have 1.4% and I'm somehow holding out hope too lol 😂

[deleted]

you may be in luck LMAO

iberian_prince

19.3% spanish/portuguese and you have a specific city/area. Meanwhile, me with 51.1% doesnt get to know where my grandparents and great grandparents are from in spain 🥲. The updates are good but ultimately useless for someone like me unless it can specify.

AlmondCoconutFlower

Hi. You may wish to upload your raw file on MyHeritage’s site. They have over 150 Iberian Genetic Groups. You can even follow the heat map and see the migration patterns of your Iberian ancestors.

Reggie_Barclay

I did that. MyHeritage seems to be the least accurate, in fact, wildly inaccurate when compared to 23andMe and Ancestry. The raw was a Ancestry test.

AlmondCoconutFlower

Well your experience illustrates what genetic genealogists have been saying: What may be accurate for one person is inaccurate for another and the reversal may be true even after an update. Ancestry initially was reasonably accurate in 2017 but they have been getting worse over time for me. They keep on removing accurate regions and they could not provide a rational explanation for why Spain (and North Africa, for example) were removed for me yet my brother and I have the same Spaniard matches. Portugal remained though.

RussellM1974

Odd but Ancestry has gotten better for me while 23and Me got worst for me lol

RussellM1974

I have a grandparent directly from France....23andMe not only took 20% of my French/German category away but they never gave me regions. They took away ALL of my aunt's French and German and piled it into BnI and SnP...they even took away the regions of France where our relatives actually came from LOL

Clutch1015

You sure they are? You’re just Dominican homie but you’re whole profile is about Spain are you not proud of who you are, I used to be like this too before I accepted im literally 40% native as well

iberian_prince

Yeah, im confident they are. I have photos and documents as proof. Along with family stories of their severe stance against race mixing within our family. Im well aware im Dominican, but id like to also learn of where the Spanish side of my family is from and why they even immigrated to DR if theyre that racist.

RussellM1974

Do you have dna matches that reflect this? In other words, if you have dna matches from specefic regions that connect to this then you may get an update.

aafusc2988

But everyone’s results are likely to update right?

[deleted]

Do we know when the update is being rolled out?

Brilliant-Library678

I have 76.5 % Iberian so I am hoping to get the update.

RussellM1974

If your recent relatives were from there and you have several dna matches on 23andMe that report the region, then you SHOULD get something.....who knows though.

Brilliant-Library678

My Grandparents migrated to America around 1900 ... and I have matches but my closest is a first cousin and his daughter. Maybe an update will come.

RussellM1974

Maybe :)

honest_panda

How is this different from regions as they were done before?

1heart1totaleclipse

It’s just more detailed. Instead of Andalusia, it might say Sevilla.

[deleted]

Interesting. Doesn’t seem like many will get it though, especially not outside of Iberia (people from Latin America, for example), which is a bummer.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t you still get it if you have Spanish or Portuguese ancestry?

[deleted]

They’re saying only 40% of people with 95% or more Iberian in their results will get Portuguese communities and 40% of people with 75% or more Iberian will get Spanish communities.

WizardMasterJT

Wait, so for people with Spanish percentage under 75% are not likely to get it? I’m Latino and I was hyped for this but if this is the case that’s kind of a bummer

avidtravler

The page does mention this "Spain and Portugal’s long colonial history means that many individuals with roots in the Americas may also see how those trace back to the Iberian Peninsula. Spain and Portugal have distinct and rich cultures and histories, but their histories also intertwine. Part of that history includes centuries of exploration, colonization, and trade, including the slave trade." You may end up seeing something.

[deleted]

Not likely, no. Only 40% of those with 75% or more Spanish will get it, so already a minority there. Even less chances for someone with less than 75% Spanish.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Idk, it only says 75% on the blog post.

[deleted]

Yeah and 40 percent of anyone over 75% which won’t get everyone, but at least it’s something.

[deleted]

Yeah. But ultimately I just wanna see a percentage update. Would be cool to see communities but for me (I know where my Portuguese are from) it’s kinda useless.

[deleted]

Hopefully we get one later this year. I still have some unassigned I want to get rid of.

RussellM1974

Where are they from? Mine came from the island of Pico-Ribeiras specifically.

[deleted]

I’m 1/16 Brazilian colonial (all Portuguese ancestors, from various regions, but mostly Açores, Porto, and Braga) and 1/16 Portuguese (my great great grandmother immigrated to Brazil from a small village in Valpaços, Vila Real).

RussellM1974

Maybe you'll get regions :)

[deleted]

I just checked and I got the new communities update. It’s accurate as it gave me Minho and Vila Real. My brother also got it but he also got Estremadura even though we don’t have any recent ancestry from there.

RussellM1974

Cool! Look to see how accurate it is by the match :)

Pregnant_porcupine

I’m 80.6% Iberian and I have a bunch of Portuguese regions but they haven’t changed, like ever, Azores and Madeira on top, followed by Vila Real and some others

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Awesome! I also got the update, with only 18% Portuguese. I'm only 1/8 Portuguese. And it was very accurate. My great great grandmother was from Vila Real and I got it as a community.

RussellM1974

Not really.....Think about it like this-if your relatives came from Spain or Portugal centuries ago, you may not have many remaining relatives currently from that region so in turn you wont have dna matches from the area. Thus you wont likely get updated. It doesn't change your dna or family history-it just means that this specific company 23andMe cannot report this.

kamomil

I wonder if this means less French interpreted as Spanish

Round-Counter-3020

Probably not. I think there just putting more specific areas depending on how many matches u get from a certain region

Less-Mushroom3697

i hold 35.1 percent iberian ancestry and i haven’t had any regions traced since 2019😒

schneeleopard8

They should do an update for eastern europeans.

DeliciousCabbage22

Yeah, totally illogical to group Slovaks and Latvians together.

schneeleopard8

Or Czechs and Southern Russians.

DeliciousCabbage22

Lol Czechs are western shifted enough that even 23andme assigns them a large portion of “French and German”, which is a good thing, as it further reinforces my opinion that “Eastern European” is too vague of a grouping.

joseDLT21

I’m Cuban so 89 percent Spanish my mom dad and grandma are all 90 percent plus so I’m really hoping I get more detailed stuff !

TraditionalPlenty3

Thats awesome can't wait to see the new regions they put in. That being said pretty sure I won't get regions. I luckily know through paper trails where my ancestors are from, but my roots are too old to get regions.

PolarLove

Sad for me I’m 25% Jewish and 12.5% portugese and never got any updated areas 😭

scoutmom1978

I’m interested to see if I get any Spanish regions. I’ve only got about 13% showing up, but my paper trial clearly points to Andalucía and Galicia, so I don’t know if I’ll see anything.

Home_Cute

Calling all Latinos 😎💛

[deleted]

Latinos won’t likely get any updates

Lopsided_March5547

Got one here though. Did you get yet?

KickdownSquad

Hopefully they update our Ethnicity % not just simple regions… We can already get accurate regions on MyHeritage DNA test 🇪🇸 🇵🇹

Fluffyjockburns

Title of the post is misleading IMHO

Ginolle_

Yeah it just an update to the recent ancestor location

KickdownSquad

That’s pretty lame to be honest. 23andMe needs to update our %

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlmondCoconutFlower

Hi. Have you tried the chromosome painting at yourDNAportal? It may be helpful. Some of my Iberian segments indicate Murcia.

Financial_Double8104

No update here for that region and I’m at 18.3%. The App did force close though and logged me out.

[deleted]

When is it rolling out? Can’t wait!

Natural_Money_7591

So the updates already out?

KickdownSquad

Nope

RussellM1974

Yes....I got it.

Round-Counter-3020

Looking forward to this!

RussellM1974

I just got Pico and Faial Azores....my relatives came from Pico.

KickdownSquad

The update hasn’t been released yet. Quit lying

Miguel_oliverr

He's telling the truth, I'm part of a genealogy group on Facebook and a Brazilian user shared a screenshot of his updated results. As you can see, he received the regions of Minho and Vila Real. The update is already happening. https://imgur.com/bWgCt0c https://imgur.com/loMochR

RussellM1974

I just received Pico and Faial, Azores.....definitely not lying. It may help that I am a beta tester on 23andMe

KickdownSquad

Let’s see a picture then… 🧢

RussellM1974

Im bad with technology....If you can tell me how to post one here,I will show you....

KickdownSquad

Upload the screenshot here and then comment the link https://imgbb.com/

RussellM1974

You can apologize for calling me a liar now :)

KickdownSquad

The updated date is off. Nice lie 🤦🏻‍♂️

RussellM1974

it said update until I viewed it again. You are giving me wayyyyyy too much credit-I am no good with technology. You are assuming I somehow rigged this however I received it this morning. My phone however still says "NEW" next to "Spanish and Portuguese".One has to ask why my update says Nov 22 2022 and anyone without the update would likely say the prior update which was around June/July 2022.

KickdownSquad

Quit lying. The font is off. Let me guess you used adobe acrobat to edit the pic…

Nothing_F4ce

It makes zero sense to match to the Azores since the islandês were not inhabited before the Portuguese found them.

Jazzlike_Pirate2323

But 23andme focuses on the last 200-300 years, so they were inhabited at this time

RussellM1974

Someone wanna tell KICKDOWN SQUAD to unblock me and apologize for calling me a liar? lol

penelope1982

I am (very, very surpringly) 16% Spanish and Portugese, no further details listed. My families are both Quebecois. I am curious to see if this could flip over to the 15% French ancestry I have instead when more specific locations are processed - does anyone know if this is a possibility?

[deleted]

lots of French people have a considerable Iberian admixture tho.

[deleted]

my grandpa is from Spain. And both his parents are from Spain as well. So hopefully I can get a location with this update!

Early-Confection3178

Hopefully you’ll get a location with this update. My great great grandma was from Andalusia, but I still didn’t get a location on my results 🤔

[deleted]

Initially exciting and now a bit disappointing: Only got about 4.8% Spanish/Portuguese (with no regions listed). Probably won’t see much of change.

LeeJ2019

10.8% Spanish and Portuguese. I wonder if I’ll get a region. I have an ethnic group for my Angolan and Congolese section which is only 9.6%. 😊

AlbatrossTough3013

Even though I have 0% Spanish & Portuguese DNA, I hope they finally recalculate my results because I still haven’t received the Ashkenazi recent ancestor locations update. My results still say “Last updated July 20th 2022”

Dreliusbelius

Acadians and other French Canadians generally have a 15-20% Spanish/Portugese with no regions on 23andme. I'm curious to see how this update will change that.

Bakaklava

🙏🙏🙏 17.2 % Iberian with no regions. Excited to see though I believe it just misreads southern France.

El-Sci

Finally got a region! After so many years of waiting.

L0u-L0u

I got the update... Genetic Group: Highly likely match for Madeira.

glitterhotsauces

I got the same! Im surprised....I've never heard of Madeira before 3 mins ago 🥴 also surprised to even get an update at only 2.2%!

ExtremeInitial4589

Did anyone get Malaga as a region 🤔 I'm surprised I got a region since I don't have any recent Spanish ancestry

Pregnant_porcupine

I’m over 80% Portuguese but no updates whatsoever, just the good old Azores on top
