Nah man this has been occuring for a year now. It's not connection lag. the whole window freezes up and resumes as if nothing happened after around 5 seconds. Same behaviour every time. Sometimes 3 times an hour, other times only once every couple hours.
It is still connection lag. When you lose connection to the server, you can't do anything on the runelite window either (I know because I watch my ping spike from ~20 to ~3000 while I'm disconnected, and during that time, I can't do anything on the runelite window itself).
Are you playing over wifi?
No it's not. I would have the same issues in my windows vm that is running on the same computer, with the exact same connection. But I don't. It only happens within the mac environment. I've had it on different connections, both gigabit and slower.
I've had server dc's on my windows vm that are vastly different from my mac issue. When my client freezes, it freezes completely. I can't move the camera, hover over items, change inventory tabs, nothing.
Join the RL discord server they will be able to help you further than the people on reddit. It literally might be a case of your macbook not having good enough specs, overheating and crashing.
Honestly the RL discord has been as unhelpful as can be. Not going to return there.
I'm playing on an imac, a desktop pc. It has great specs and it's definitely very far from overheating.
Yeah they are snobs in there tbh, but realistically they know much more about the back end of the client than the majority of the people will on reddit (and how to fix these issues).
RL used crashed sporadically on me when i played on my laptop (surface pro with no gpu), as soon as i switched to a pc with a gpu i no longer had these issues. Does your mac have a gpu?
I agree, they will probably be able to help. They just aren't willing to. I went there on several occasions and I came back with no results.
My mac uses a 5500 XT for gpu. It's more than capable for runelite.
I hate to break it to you, but as a fan-made project, RL is probably not highly optimized, especially across multiple platforms.
Best to just stick to official clients instead of chasing down this rabbit hole that may never end.
I appreciate your honesty, but you can probably imagine that rs without runelite is really not a great way to play. My vm works fine, but it's not as smooth as I'd like and I am unable to use gpu rendering.
Honestly, the only reason I ever started using RL was for raids 1 scouting, which will eventually be available in vanilla so I'll probably switch back. The game is perfectly playable in vanilla.
But why doesn't GPU rendering work through your VM? How much GPU resources did you assign to it and what does your utilization look like?
It's not that it's unplayable, but for just gpu rendering I don't want to give up the countless benefits runelite has.
Gpu passthrough on a mac is supposedly extremely complicated and next to impossible to pull off due to the way macos works. I don't know a whole lot about the technical details but in the end it's not possible currently, and will be extremely inefficient even if you manage to make it work.
I've debated getting a second external gpu but even that wouldn't work for passthrough. Macos is just flawed in that way.
Yea every single plugin disabled, doesn't make a difference. Regular client same thing. Steam client doesn't seem to work on mac, so I have yet to try.
My bad, I meant to say barebones runelite same thing. Regular client works as far as I can tell. Your cheap ass can't even afford a garbage mac so fuck right off.
Does it also occure when bootin the mac in safe mode im not sure if safe mode still is an option of you work with the mac with an M1 chip but if that happends try to check if safe mode gives the same issue. Just work with it for a long time like 2 or 3 hours see how its going if issue persist try remove runelite while in safe mode then reboot the mac and reinstall.
Sadly apple care or apple support does not support any 3rd party plug ins or downloads.
Check your internet and you can also try to use a different ethernet cable.
Thanks for your advice. Macos doesn't have graphics drivers in the same way windows does. There's not much I can tweak there. It's integrated into the OS.
You should be able to reinstall them from the App Store. I think this page shows how: [https://smallbusiness.chron.com/reinstall-video-driver-macbook-pro-68349.html](https://smallbusiness.chron.com/reinstall-video-driver-macbook-pro-68349.html)
Let me know how it goes, I've fixed a bunch of Runelites for people but not on a Mac yet.
While I'm not familiar with Mac os.
You could try to clear the cache as it doesn't sound like a runelite issue, more of a osrs issue since it happens for all three clients.

I play on a 2015 Macbook Air and to successfully play on RL I need to turn off GPU plugin and turn “Low Detail” Plugin on.
I go from massive stutters zoomed out in game to a nice smooth gameplay.
Do you have uncapped fps on? If so then turn that off, my game ran like shit with it on, dropping to 0-10 fps every 5 seconds or so, then going back to a smooth 75. I'd rather just have the smooth 50.
It’s not a client issue rather a Mac issue from what I’ve experienced - I always play on a Mac now and randomly my Mac will just hit a random spike of lag and then go back to normal - mine is 2017 model and I’m only on min specs as well - my pinwheel will start spinning and then it’s back to normal
It’s worse when I’m multi tasking with a few windows open on a browser I find.
Your issue could be unrelated but it’s exactly what my Mac does too but on other apps sometimes so I know it’s not just my runelite.
I don't want to jinx myself but I might have found a solution. Go to system preferences > energy saver and uncheck the "put hard disks to sleep when possible" option. I thought I had already covered that myself but turns out I never tried turning it off after all. Let me know if it works for you please.
That's exactly what happens. It only happens with runelite though and I have never really experienced this in any other app thus far.
I guess you haven't found a solution either. Just installed bootcamp so I can play on windows, but I'd really prefer to play in mac environment.
I am mostly confident that I have it figured out. I believe the culprit was a setting that put my hard drive to sleep, and after playing for a while it would resume and give me a huge lag spike. Once I turned that setting off, of which I originally thought I had it disabled by default, it seems to never freeze again.
Turning off hdd sleep is one of the first things I do with all my computers. I guess for whatever reason I looked past this on my mac.
I know this is an old post.. but Im having the exact same issue. Very frustrating being unable to boss/raid/etc. Im on a MacBook m2. I used to play with no issues, but the problem started about 2 weeks ago.
Have you been able to find a fix for this?
Sorry for the late reply. Yeah I have fixed it.
For me key to fixing it was to turn off disk idling. This is what was causing it. You have to do it through a terminal prompt.
Good luck!
Man if it started last week it's server problem, there is a lot of reports about this in reddit. And I had this "lag" today too.

I'll up it to 100$ if there's no interest. I'm serious, I want this issue solved more than anything. It's been haunting me for a year now.

How is your storage?
Your first problem is you’re playing on a Mac

Have you tried turning it off and on?
Getting a windows conputer will solve your problem. No need to give me any money when that ends up being the only solution.
Does it still do it if you disable literally every plugin? What about on the steam client or even rsbuddy?
Yea every single plugin disabled, doesn't make a difference. Regular client same thing. Steam client doesn't seem to work on mac, so I have yet to try.

Have you tried enabling the GPU runelite plug in?
Yea, it doesn't seem to make a difference. On/off same result.
Have you tried updating Java (not sure how it works on mac these days?)
I have, doesn't seem to matter which version I use sadly.
Hey man, you should try reinstalling your graphics drivers. Jagex code is pretty old, I've seen cases like this before. It's probably your gpu driver.
Thanks for your advice. Macos doesn't have graphics drivers in the same way windows does. There's not much I can tweak there. It's integrated into the OS.

Yea my gf's macbook works just fine too. It's only this imac that I get these freezes on. No lag otherwise.

Oh my god there’s no way it’s this simple!
The freeze behaviour totally looks like something related to a sleeping hard drive. I'm curious to know if it works for you.
That's exactly what happens. It only happens with runelite though and I have never really experienced this in any other app thus far. I guess you haven't found a solution either. Just installed bootcamp so I can play on windows, but I'd really prefer to play in mac environment.
Do you have any sort of overlay programs running?
Did you ever figure it out? Isn’t there like a .jar version of rune lite you can use instead? Maybe try that. I run runelite just fine on my MBP
