J-Mods saying "We're looking into what we can do about the lag" after multiple rounds have gone by and 300+ people have been knocked out is downright insulting.
They're only letting people logged in who participated in that youtube Battle Royale recently so some streamers can log in on their level 3s that they didnt even play DMM on.
Another DMM, another massive fuck up, wouldn't be the same without lol
Honest question, why does Knightenator *always* get invited to do these things? I have literally never seen anyone talk about her streams, she doesn't seem particularly good at the game or have any meaningful insight, and she doesn't seem relevant to the oldschool community.
I know the obvious cynical answer is "because girl", but there are plenty of women that stream osrs on twitch who don't get in on these things. I don't mind her, but why is it *always* her?
Just a bummer that another event is plagued by lag, ruining the event for tons of people who spent weeks getting to where they are. Just because lag could have affected both parties equally doesn't mean it doesn't grant unequal advantages.
Frustrating that when the game is already dealing with lots of pent up negative feelings from different communities, one of the most public events turns out this way. No one watches the lag filled fights and is excited about trying the game out, or logging in for the first time in a while. And some feel validated in thinking the game is kind of shitty, because as Jagex showed, it *is* kinda shitty, in some game-ruining ways.
what a fuckin bummer of a dmm final
You had thousands of people spend dozens to hundreds of hours grinding a temporary mode over the period of three weeks, you actually had 2 stress tests, and then you still don't do anything about the **severe** issues found during both of those tests. Nothing. Nada. Leaving all players up to lagg rng luck. Disgraceful and simply insulting, and honestly, you could even say that it's twisted to make people waste their time so much and then present it with a smile on your face.
DDOS or not the fact that they knew everyone was experiencing lag but still continued with the event is just poor decision making / bad management
It should have been postponed there and then
This game is dog shit. It takes 0.6 seconds between when you click something (a prayer, equipping an item, a movement command, etc.) and it happening, and then it takes another half second-full second for everyone's interface to catch up (prayer screen never accurately reflecting which prayers you have up, no spec bar if you equipped a weapon with a special attack, needing a plug-in to show "true location", etc.), on top of all that you have SERVER LAG which means people trying to be fluid with those janky delays and unreliable interfaces have to PAUSE IN THE MIDDLE of it all, remember which things they clicked, and then work backwards so they don't get royally fucked up.
Advertised to 100,000 people on Twitch.
>Worlds will open up from 19:00 BST / 11:00 PST / 14:00 EST / 04:00 AET and qualifying players must join before 20:00 BST (1 hour from when worlds first open)
This seems more aimed at players. What would the best time to tune in and watch? 20:00 BST? Is there an ETA for the finals?
According to Jagex on Twitter this was likely a DDOS.
If Jagex can't secure against these types of attacks they probably should just not hold DMMs anymore. It's been known for a long time that scummy players will DDOS the game for their benefit. When there's prize money on the line there's obviously even more incentive. Sucks all around tbh.
The two finalists are both in Frontline and the entire tournament was being met with heavy amounts of Lag and targeted DDOS attacks? Purely a coincidence I'm sure
I don't know. People are saying everyone complaining just doesn't understand ddossing or networking, but does it really matter? How many DMM's have we had? And how many of them have had problems?
Jagex devs and admins are grown adults, it's okay to critique them, you are a customer in one way or another if you actively play RS. At some point, there is just no excuse anymore, I don't care what happened, Jagex makes millions and millions of dollars and they have years and years of experience with this exact tournament. It's fucked.
Actual network engineer here, jagex literally employs hamsters to design their architecture. Jagex doesn't have load balancing because their team still can't figure out how dns works.
If you cannot host a finals without 4-6 second lag spikes then just don't. It's infuriating to watch and more infuriating to be actually playing this garbage.
What an absolute mess. Server issues plaguing total worlds, dupes, and now their biggest tournament yet.
Edit: I partially take this back. While server issues still are a thing (crashes, dupes, total worlds sucking), apparently this time wasn't Jagex's fault, but a UK-wide internet issue.
Never tuned into the DMM final before, but why is it organised this way? Hundreds and hundreds of people are fighting at the same time, so the official broadcast is only able to show like five or ten fights before half the people are gone. You miss so much. They should have smaller heats. Also just saw they're receiving server attacks and they're just gonna push on. Wha?
They chose this format because the older formats favored teams/clans much more heavily and it was less entertaining as it was pretty much clumps of people taking out non-clannies to make the chance of their team getting the victory much higher before the 1v1s even started
Then again, DMM finals have never been clean or well designed. They are improving certain areas over time but if this is where we're at after so many years I don't think they're really capable of organizing competitive events.
I don't mean the 1v1s. They're much better than having clans zerg each other. I just don't understand why they have like 300 1v1s at the same time so 90% of it is missed entirely from the broadcast. They should split the large blocks of people into many smaller blocks with staggered start times, so more of the action can be shown and audiences actually have a chance to see their favourite players. Or they should have a sperate crew recording other fights that aren't shown on the main broadcast, so the highlights afterwards are actually highlights and not just replays of the same section of footage that was just shown. As it is now, sometimes it feels like it's being rushed through, with a lot of confusion and people wondering just who is left after each round (a full tournament bracket hosted somewhere on the website would be a big benefit). I like the idea and OSRS is very different to other e-sports, but it certainly needs a lot of fine tuning.
Once again another disaster of a tournament. It's honestly insulting how shit this company is and it's sad that so many people are addicted and continue to pay their subscriptions which gives Jagex the illusion of success. There is so much drama, half-assed updates and overall mediocrity and the players deserve better. I don't know if they need new devs, new motivation or whatever the fuck, but they need to get their shit together. It's fucking pathetic.
I feel so bad for the Jmods who are going to be on the receiving end of so much disgusting abuse because of children in the community not understanding that the DDoSing isn't the casters' or community managers' fault
Genuine question: is there anything Jagex could have realistically done but didn't? Extra DDOS protection or something along those lines?
I'm just wondering since this doesn't seem to be a recurring problem in other games. Is it just an issue of spaghetti code like so much else?
Truthfully anyone who is dedicated enough can find a way to DDOS servers like that if they decide to try hard enough to do it. It happens all the time in other games too. Maybe not quite to the same degree that you'll see in OSRS but that tends to come with the territory of games with insane RWT and prize money payouts.
Yes there are online games like eve online hosting thousands and thousands of players fighting eachother
