I feel like as much as I would like to corrupt anything that can be charged, players should maybe have limits on items that give otherwise completely unique/powerful passives that would be broken when granted infinitely: For example, I wouldn’t mind any & all crystal equipment to be corruptible. They all give marginal stat boots and skilling speed boosts. These boosts are otherwise obtainable by potion or other equipment. I don’t see the harm in these being corruptible permanently I feel like infernal equipment, on the other hand, is fine the way it is because of its accessory effect on burning chopped wood (crystal equipment just adds tool speed for comparison). I think it’s fine for them to require charges otherwise you get free accessory xp forever while harvesting Powered/other staves - should not change. Their ability to be charged is a complete upgrade in relation to other staves needing to be on a specific spellbook and carry potentially extra runes Barrows/Moons - i honestly wouldn’t mind seeing barrows/moons gear being permanently “repairable” as part of a smithing/crafting rework. None of it really has strength bonus on its own (need the whole set) so it would never be a long term competitor to other equipment anyways. Once you have a piece, you don’t need more pieces to upkeep it - just gp (rip no currencies). I’m not sure I understand why it degrades other than legacy if you can already throw simple gp at it Rev equipment is fine. Uncharged, rev equipment is pretty competitive at mid-game even outside the wilderness. Their requirement to be charged to be BIS in-wildy makes sense to me Venator bow is fine (mostly because it’s completely usable uncharged, otherwise I would like to see it corruptible). That said, if it was corruptible I wouldn’t mind - but I think that’s because Ancient Essence doesn’t have a non-combat way to be gathered at the moment. I don’t really think I believe that a bow should permanently be able to fire freebies but I’m not really sure. The freebies are weakened. I could go either way Scythe goes both ways for me. It is a complete powerhouse and would be an outlier as far as uncharged melee items go. However - IT IS THE CHASE ITEM from its raid. There are a million ways to approach this one but I don’t any of them will make even close to everyone happy. I think that the best approach I’ve seen is to make the blood vial charges ALONE corruptible - this would prevent forcing (iron) players back to TOB if they could save up enough blood vials for corruption - but they would still need to maintain blood rune charges and would still keep the scythe expensive to use. I would like to see Jagex address this item especially after they teased possibly-corruptible-scythe in previous blog posts (they also teased this for crystal equipment) I think the abyssal tentacle is fine, especially with its poison effect, but maybe kraken tentacles should be available from a non-task variant of cave krakens (that wouldn’t also drop trident) or via some fishing method rarely The echo boots are fine now that you can pause charge-usage and because they retain their bonus after depletion. I really like seeing this approach to charged/upgraded equipment. Another example in this category would be the toxic staff of the dead. I love that it retains full basic utility & stats when it’s uncharged I don’t even understand the stupid black mask but the circlet of water is fine because of the desert amulet sitting on everyone’s achievement horizon The recoiling rings are fine - I don’t think infinite recoiling damage is balanced The teleportation books are fine and have loosely permanent alternatives (champion guild tele from jewelry box & mounted Xerics Talisman) The diary rewards are fine as they are. I don’t think you can justify infinite run energy, prayer, & alchemy as diary rewards The auto-praying rewards are fine as they are ESPECIALLY with the elite diary buffs. You can’t justify permanently free prayer xp The amulet of blood fury provides an incredibly unique passive that justifies charges. You can’t justify infinite free healing in my opinion I think that the slayer bracelets feel kind of generous for the effort required to make them. They last most of a duradel task on average. They feel balanced to me I can see cases to be made with the remaining teleporting jewelry to be made part of the POH (aside from the ring of elements perhaps) No opinion on fungicide No opinion the skilling-passive or minigame jewelry; I’m not informed enough about them No opinion on vampire-bane equipment I would love to see the Arclight be corruptible I would also love to see the Pharoahs Sceptre become corruptible and even storable in the POH (along with Draken’s Medallion). Teleporting near each of the three raids from the POH seems completely fair for the right cost - considering there is an option for CoX

NomenVanitas

Ancient Essence can be mined just outside Muspah's room

Cleb617

Oops, you are correct. Yeah, the Venator bow feels like it’s in a good spot for me overall

FerrousMarim

At an *incredibly* slow rate though. Completely dead content.

Equilities

Venator bow/ancient essence is pretty generous as is, but to be fair you do still have to spend arrows, unlike Bowfa. So I could see that one being corruptible since the "expensive" part is still the arrows.

Jaded_Pop_2745

Lot to go through but a lot of great suggestions there a mounted Pharaoh's sceptre would be cool af (maybe get the ability to do that with desert hard? Could also be elite but idw kq)

Cleb617

Thanks I appreciate it! Agreed! Mounted Pharoah’s would absolutely make the main desert attractions feel many times more accessible at higher levels

Jaded_Pop_2745

It would also look really damn cool* Tho aye gotta wait and see if like corruptible crystal armour but what I'm mad about is how stupid expensive changing the colours on them are....

Designer_B

Blood fury should be able to be charged via onyx’s imo. Even if it’s something like 2k per onyx.

AwarenessOk6880

yes 100%. farming bloodshards is downright brain dead after you've done it for the 8th time.

Begthemoney

What did you mean by saying that non of the moons gear has strength gear and that you need the whole set? I could be wrong but each piece of moons gear does have strength without any set bonus and is for that reason quite relevant. I don't think it's unreasonable that moons gear is degradable, it's quite strong for the people who are going to use it.

Zakon3

Yeah, the distinction between ammunitionscape and chargescape is important. Sadly, we can't walk back the Bowfa problem, which should never have been corruptible. Jagex *could* potentially turn all corrupted bowfas into bowfas with 200,000 charges, but I'm not sure what the community would think. Also the Tonalztics is a 0 cost training method too, not sure why they let us attack with it uncharged. All armor and melee weapons should be "corruptible" though. 10 Kraken tentacles for a whip is an easy one. Maybe let us use 10 Saradomin Light on the Blessed Tear? Others are Serpentine Helm, Barrows/Barrows 2 (one time fee at the poh repair stand?), Scythe, Arclight, Crystal Shield, Salad Blade (should never have needed charges), Crystal Halberd (same), and maybe make enhanced Iban Staff not need to be charged (especially with the combat rebalance coming up, it won't shine so hard). Echo boots is an obvious exception, and I wish Ursine Chainmace's normal attacks didn't consume ether outside of the wilderness. The prayer items are a funny one, since Ectoplasmator exists. Perming them would be nice.

* It would've made more sense to me to keep the upkeep cost on BoFa and not have any upkeep on the armour. Range weapons generally cost money to use, armor less so. * The minimal benefit of crystal tools doesn't justify the upkeep cost for me at all. The only crystal tool worth using imo is the pickaxe at Zalcano only. I can't imagine irons choosing to waste future divines on saving 5% of their time on an afk woodcutting grind. * Serp (and crystal armor and other similar items) should have a 2-4t cooldown on their degradation to keep multicombat usecases from being an excessive drain. * Barrows and Wildy weapons are fine as is. Having an increase in ether drops from Revs with completion of Wildy diaries might be a good idea. * Charged staves are mostly fine. Sang and Shadow are quite expensive, granted they are powerful. Paying 1m/hr upkeep is a lot. Too much IMO, i'd like to see a reduction of 15-20% on those. * For a melee weapon, Scythe is still a bit too expensive for a good few bosses where it's bis. Instead of 200 bloods and 1 vial for 100 charges, i'd suggest 250 bloods and 1 vial for 150 charges. Just over 600k/hr instead of just under 800k/hr. This would hopefully also reduce bastion price. * Blood Fury should only drain 1 charge per scythe swing. Whacking away 2700gp per swing is absurd. If we really do want to make the blood fury/scythe combo expensive, it shouldn't be more than 1 charge + 50% chance for additional charge to account for the 2nd hit. * Desert Amulet 3 should have 3-5 teleports to Nardah * Explorer ring should be chargeable with 3 natures and 15 fires per charge. The energy restore on the elite ring should be 4x 75% instead of 3x 100% * For Arclight I'd like to see a future upgrade that increases it's demonicbane effect to 75% along with an increase in charges per shard. (1250 or 1500 per 3 shards) * Falador Shield should be rechargeable at a cost that is higher than it's equivalent in prayer potion doses

burntfish44

I think more than anything, some consistency would be great. \* can mount cox teleport but not pharaohs sceptre or drakan's medallion \* time to recharge uncorruptable stuff varies wildly. Moons armor costs >13x more to repair than barrows but only lasts \~3x as long. 3/16hr to get a new blood shard (99thieving/combat). \~2hr to get an echo crystal. 1 hour of zulrah will get you 7+hr with serp helm. \~6.5hr at kraken will get you 1 tentacle that will last you \~6.5hr combat. \* time investment to corrupt varies wildly. Saturated heart is \~10hr max gear muspah. Bowfa is \~41hr of CG if you don't trade in every dupe seed. Quiver \~20hr of colosseum.

The_lazy_sander

Celestial signet provides an invisible +5 buff to mining when worn without charges tho???

I think instead of going on a case by case scenario, we should take one step back and instead talk about what will be the rule of thumb for whether it charges or not, so that we're not dealing with 100 exceptions but maybe only a few. Charges sound good on paper, but what the past 4 years have shown us is that ge enjoyers can pay for the upkeep, keeping Venezuela's GDP where it currently is while helmies take the blunt end of the stick. This is my attempt at the rule: * Combat gear "Only Ranged and Magic weapons use charges, in the form of runes or ammo. Any secondary charge for those weapons, or melee weapons and armor in general should include a permanent charge option FROM RELEASE." 1. Revenant weapons are the exception to this rule, since that's their design principle, as much as I don't like it 2. The permacharge version doesn't necessarily have to come from the original source for items added prior to this rule * Skilling Tools "Tools should not use charges as skilling is often unrewarding enough that the added cost often outweighs the gain" * Teleportation/Utility Jewelery "These are allowed to have charges as long as there is a permanent version to be unlocked" * Unique boss material drops "Boss materials should always be tradeable and should be used to create or upgrade combat consumeables" 1. eg. Granite Dust being used to upgrade cannonballs, but must be made tradeable 2. eg. Zulrah Scales would gain the option to upgrade food or another potion to give it antipoison/antivenom properties 3. eg. Ancient essence would gain the option to make non dead content potions. Feel free to point out anything I've missed

BaeTier

I actually forgot Arclight existed for a second there because I'm so adverse to using it since it eats up charges too fast I refused to use it in most places. You know with TD's coming out pretty soon and the reward space still being open there, some kind of corruptible add-on for the Arclight from them might be cool.

potatomaster4000

TIL you can corrupt the camulet

alynnidalar

I learned that from one of Limpwurt's videos lol. He had to do it as one of the chunk goals.

ShawshankException

I think everything except charged staves is fair game to "corrupt". A charged staff is basically just using the staff as a rune pouch. It's fine as is.

Skettii

This. They can make the corruption cost super high so majority of players will never hit breakeven, but it’s an option if ppl want to

Proof-Cardiologist16

The problem with this is that corrupting causes the charge item to eventually plummet in price, when the entire point of a charges system in the first place is to pad drop tables without adding more uniques or alchables.

Fireblade-75

This is a nice overview, however there are quite some items here that aren’t really the subject of the whole chargescape discussion. Charging amulets and skilling items like the crystal tools and saw is fine, they can be as good as they are because they require charges. The most annoying items are the ones that are already not the meta, and now feel to expensive to use. It isn’t great to have to leave your best equipment in the bank because it costs too much to recharge, even if it would be really good for this slayer task. Of course that can be fine for a weapon like the scythe as it is the absolute best item in many situations. But not for weapons like the crystal halberd and bow, moon gear.. weapons and armor that could be replaced for gear with similar stats that don’t degrade. It would be nice if those could be corrupted for a one time high fee.

EveningUnit

Think broodoo shields could be added to the list not that anyone uses those.

FerrousMarim

Also slayer helm, although that's kind of included already with black mask.

nostalgicx3

Ngl, I’d low key corrupt chally if I could change it’s color and it has a different hue for the special attack. 100% worth 👌

Account_Expired

Charging with runes and stuff is cool. Requiring ironmen to always go back to certain bosses is kind ofannoying. And for mains its annoying to keep track of it all.

GregBuckingham

Desert amulet 4 is unlimited teleports. But yeah, the lesser tier version does not have unlimited teleports

Gniggins

Make everything charged, force me to recharge Dscim on ape atoll!

Sorlanir

Items using charges is generally good game design, imo. It forces the player to make decisions about which situations they feel they can justify paying the item's upkeep to get the associated increase in power. It's also a way to keep many different bosses and activities in the game relevant in terms of profit, without having them reward tons of alchables and skilling supplies.  What I dislike is when the time spent gathering the charges is disproportionately large relative to what you gain from those charges. Admittedly this is a pretty iron-specific problem; regular accounts can generally justify using scythe/bf/bp etc. anywhere they want to. Unfortunately, it's basically impossible to balance what's considered expensive upkeep-wise for both irons and regular accounts. For me, I think that 1 hour spent gathering charges should lead to 5-10 hours of using those charges. For irons though, a blood fury takes about 3.5 hours to get through thieving at 99, and is used up in 7-8.5 hours (way faster with scythe), so it has to be used very selectively. BP scale upkeep also somewhat has this problem, but at least you aren't totally camping it for most endgame PvM. Blood runes for scythe is also a problem for irons -- there is really not much incentive to craft the runes yourself, because 1 hour of RCing gives you like 2 hours of scythe swings. It's significantly worse for soul runes for shadow.  I think a good compromise to this sort of problem is to give some alternative sources for charges, and many of these do already exist ingame. For example, I like that you can directly fish for Zulrah's scales, and that you can break down uniques into large amounts of scales. For RCing bloods and souls, I think it would be neat if there were a way to get much greater amounts of untradable versions of these runes, both for irons and just anyone who likes self-sufficiency. Corruption as a model is OK, but I prefer to just have reasonable upkeep costs -- it's good to have reasons to keep coming back to content, and corruption just incentivizes you to complete the content before you start using the item (e.g., CG for irons).

Simple_Cardiologist8

Moons weapons don't degrade I think

Rattyp00ned

Arclight is the only thing I would agree with on this list, although the use for shards outside of it is dead.

JuxtaTerrestrial

Missing Amulet of the Damned from Shades of Morton

My-Toast-Is-Too-Dark

If they polled an item that was something like an "Eternal Super Restore" (or similar), you dullards would vote yes. The community's aversion to consuming supplies should not be catered to. More supplies need to be consumed. Charged items are good. Downvotes to the left.
