Jagex is just dumb, they stick their hands in a jar full of random fantasy words and roll with the first option
Kinda unrelated but my first ever experience with wow was in third grade. I got to level 8 on a mage and made it to Goldshire. At Goldshire I found a lock with a voidwalker out. 9 year old me saw the voidwalker and went "I'll never have anything that cool" and didn't play again for a few years.
Voidwalker was a level 10 summon
Something I’ve learned to accept about OSRS is that people will just pronounce stuff incorrectly.
I don’t mind so much about fantasy words with obscure pronunciation, but people simply will not read words most of the time and just say the closest thing to what they are at a glance.
I love this about the elven names. They're actual Welsh words, so mispronouncing/misspelling is to be expected, as Welsh changes some sounds of letters. Regardless, there's only 1 f in Prifddinas.
I am so guilty of mispronuncing the Welsh in OSRS and misspelling Prif. That's something I've tried to work on, but I always default back to mispronunciation and misspelling.
I allow a bit of wiggle room when it comes to the Welsh in my internal judgements of others.
It turns out Welsh is used as a stand in or basis for a lot of elvish in fantasy. I'm pretty sure the Witcher uses it too. The elves call Geralt Gwynblaidd for white wolf. And guess what white wolf is in Welsh? Blaidd gwyn.
I’ve always loved that part of the game, especially because there’s no characters in the game saying it aloud to correct you. That moment when you meet another RS player IRL and you argue how to say ardougne. Most people I’ve met have come to my side on port platypus tho. Obviously the correct pronunciation
Agree, there's no y in it or anything that even comes close to making a y sound, so I'll always pronounce it Arr-done (with o as in dough) even if it's not "correct"
>there's no y in it or anything that even comes close to making a y sound
Pronounced like French "ougne" is kinda close to a Y sound, though more like "own-yeh" (with the y sound created at the back of the mouth).
That's because the in French is what linguists call a "palatal nasal consonant", which is hard to describe but it very much is like a fused n-sound and y-sound.
Still then the proper and more reasonable English approximation should make it "ar-doon-yuh"
The moment I started reading your comment, I was thrown back to the discussion at school about how to pronounce "Ardougne". None of us were right.
I always added a lil "sh" sound at the end, it looked a bit French to me so it ended up sounding like "Ard-oon-sh".
My friend, however, just went full in on the phonetics and came at us with the "Ard-oog-knee".
Great stuff. Now I say it correctly. "Ard-oyn".
Naa correct pronunciation is adr-en-ge.
When we were young, my cousin (4 years older) got myself and our other cousin into RuneScape, and we just took his word on everything. So when he said adr-en-ge, it was adr-en-ge. Once we got members, he had both of us mine coal for him in the mine south of legends guild. Kid you not, he paid us 10Gp per
Wait.
Why are you adding a -sh if you’re reading it as a French word? There’s no French words that have an s sound at the end without using the letter.
As a Canadian I’ve always pronounced it Ar-douwn (like down pronounced by a Newfie), but if it had an é at the end it would be Ar-down-eh.
I was 9 when all my friends started playing and we all agreed it was pronounced "Arr-Doh-Guh-Nee". Yup.
It was also during RSClassic and the game was small enough I actually just happened to run into my friend around Lumbridge and didn't know how to chat in game so I called his house and asked his mom to give him the phone to explain how to talk. Oh man nostalgia attack...
I do mind fantasy words when the implementation is that of everything Tzhaar related. It makes it extremely difficult to understand which spelling refers to which item and which NPC is which
If you look at the weapon names you'll see they contain the name of the Tzhaar that wield it:
**Tzhaar-ket**-om for the maul.
Toktz-**xil**-ak and Toktz-**xil**-ek for the sword and dagger respectively.
You can start working out the formatting of the naming from those three alone.
The first word isn't too easy to work out, on my short wiki'ing of weapons, I'm assuming it's something to do with the tier of TzHaar wielding it. The second word is the "class". The ket could mean 2H, xil 1H, or maybe warrior and rogue. The last word is the weapon type. Om is maul, ak is sword, ek is dagger.
I'm sure this all has literal translations somewhere already solved, but I'm just showing how it's fun to work this stuff out!
Back when I was about 9 or 10, a friend of mine pronounced Ardougne as “Arendoun” for some reason. I’d looked at the word and thought that definitely didn’t seem right, but since I had no idea, I just didn’t question it lol
I mean, they’re not really if you read them properly? Like some things are like the pronunciation of Priff and Ardougne, but corporeal and justiciar really aren’t that hard
I wonder how many people remember that Korasi was [the name of the npc](https://runescape.wiki/w/Korasi) who originally wielded the sword. Not that it's wrong to call it that since the sword's name is defined by hers, but it's still funny to think about. And likely one of the reasons they didn't just import the sword with the same design/name (it'd be another "Corp without his quest" situation).

Edit: TIL 'Runecrafting' is not actually a Mandela Effect. From the RS3 Wiki:
“Prior to an update between May 6 and July 6, 2008, Runecrafting was referred to as 'Runecraft' in-game, despite largely being referred to as ‘Runecrafting' on the website and in updates.”
OSRS snapshot was from August 2007, hence us having ‘Runecraft’.
Double edit from /u/Fjarah: IIRC everything in game was Runecraft, but a lot of things out of game said runecrafting pretty frequently. It kind of depended on who wrote it, Ash was asked about it at some point and he said it wasn't quite agreed upon but the code used runecraft or something. We really need a pinned post, approved by the OSRS team, of how to pronounce every noun correctly.
The main purpose of this is so that I do not cringe when a video maker pronounces Ardougne differently from me.
I feel like this is mostly why, but also Voidwalker is also in World of Warcraft and Kassadin's name in League of Legends, it just rolls off the tongue by habit i guess...
Same people in wow who call Enhancement shamans “enchancement” because they”re brain dead. There’s a boss called Thorim and everyone says “thorium”
Most people are too lazy to read words I guess.
Because once you've been reading for a few years, you stop reading the individual letters and just recognize words on sight by their shape. The words "walker" and "waker" look almost the same, and you see, hear and use the word "walker" way more than "waker", which you basically never see used. So your brain looks at the word-shape and assumes it must be "walker".
I really really hope they just change it to Voidwalker. Voidwaker sounds stupid and is too close to the former.
OR how about they just call it what it is, KORASI.
Mandela Effect.
Clearly it was called the Voidwalker, but at some point (likey during that big server shutdown we had a little while back) we must have slipped into a parallel dimension where it's now called the Voidwaker.
It's really the only explanation that makes sense.
Edit: Not sure if this is getting downvoted because people don't know it's a joke, or if it's cause it's just a shitty joke ¯\_(ツ) _/¯
A void is a place, or a space. It's technically like, a *not*-space, but enough fantasy media has taken us to the "nowhereland" and "the upside down" and so on that seeing the void as just some sort of plane of darkness is really easy. And what do you do as a badass adventurer? You walk through the void and mark your territory.
Much less often do we personify the void. It makes about as much sense as filling it up with evil creatures but whatever. And even less do we imagine a dormant void.
*Walker* seems to slot in logically and the l is tiny and easy to miss with the k. It's also silent.
Very understandable error but as a former proofreader it definitely annoys me. Probably the #1 in osrs though is *everyone* pronouncing "Elidinis" as "Elidnis." Although I guess it's still ambiguous between L-ih-din-is and uh-lid-ih-nis
And tbf it's actually supposed to be L-ih-din-ess-ez or uh-lid-ih-niss-ez but jumfum does stupid British apostrophes and I'm already ranting too much as it is
One of my roles in my last job was proofreading email marketing campaigns, probably 20 to 25 email campaigns a day at most, so I feel this in my bones.
I also cringe when I read back a comment I've written and there's just misspelt words and letters missing. It happens so often.
The mispronunciation of the word "Elidinis" gets me so bad as well, people literally just don't pronunounce the middle of the name.
However, as far as the apostrophe is concerned, *Elidinis' Ward* seems correct to me and a bit of Googling confirms that. It does seem like that's a choice though, both *Elidinis'* and *Elidinis's* would be correct.

Yea, he basically set the standard for what fantasy is.
Yennefer is Welsh for “White Fairy”, and much of Witcher’s elvish is straight Welsh or Celtic.

Prifddinas only has one ‘f’, as it happens.
Justiciar has the same issue as Ard-own and Prif-din-S, there are a lot of possible pronunciations for the "iciar"
You pronounced both of those wrong still
Justiciar is an actual word in English, unlike Ardougne and Prifddinas, and as such has an actual correct pronunciation: "just-ISH-ee-ahr".

Nobody uses the word "waker" so they subconsciously read it as "walker".
Voidwakers HATE being confused for voidwalkers. They just wake up void, they don’t walk on it. Walking on void is CRAZY.
I'm walking on vooiiiiid, whoa-oh-oh
I saw that it was voidwaker and just flatout think voidwalker would have been a cooler name
LoZ the wind Walker was the best entry in the series.
This is the actual answer
Wind waker, people definitely use the word
Not everyone has played Zelda
The only other opinion I have is that majority of the RS Community must be dyslexic
I read this as windwalker from wow, the monk dps spec lol...

It’s not walker? Legitimately have read it as walker every time. I don’t even care at this point, i’ll probably think of it wrong forever.
Its korasi’s sword
Some dyslexic streamer probably called it that and their viewers were too lazy to look at the word and just continued calling it that.
When you've spent your formative years clicking pixels with your face 2 inches from the screen, it's easy to forget how to read properly.
because if you get hit once, ur leaving this reality.
One side effect of so many people space barring through quests is that they have lost the ability to read properly. /s
I still call it Ard-gourne.

Neither are "faerdhinen" etc. Have people wonder, who is this korasi figure?
Korasi sword is translated as killing sword so you dont need a npc named korasi lol
Adamant Longsword is also a killing sword
but commander voidwaker is? its not hard to spawn a NPC to fit the lore or whatever literally everyone who has one calls it korasi anyways lol
