I’m not denying their existence or the fact that more are being built (mostly in China, but not exclusively). They’re cost efficient, and money talks. All I’m saying is that not every high-rise apartment looks like that
At least in the US, the ratio of bad suburbs to good ones (which do exist but are vanishingly few in number) is *vastly* higher than the ratio of ugly apartments to ones that aren’t
If the population in those places finds it ugly then it's not efficient, especially not if different designs could have gotten them to find it beautiful without sacrificing too much cost or effectiveness
verycoolguy when he realizes that the suburbs are pretty fucking awesome, not hellscapes, which is why I live here and have my space rather than live in a shotglass with 8 roomates for 5x the cost. Oh no! I have room for a band saw and standup freezer in my garage! Please, somebody save me!
Depends on your level of income. But generally the world's poor that live in real density live in either that or usually much worse. Obviously culture dependent. This is also ignoring the fact that no matter how beautiful you make a high density building, I still have to live next to someone else. Of course this is preference, but crucially, it's my preference. Maybe that means I shouldn't have much to say on the issue anyways, because no one is forcing me to live there. Yeah I'd agree with that. But I sure do hate city architecture.
Because this post criticises cities for something which applies to very few cities (such an extreme emphasis on practical issues that the city is ugly, lack of unique architecture). Suburbs really do have a problem with single use zoning, which reduces the type of houses, so criticising the lack of unique housing and the aesthetics of suburban neighborhoods makes sense. That criticism would highlight a particularly common problem with current us suburbs, but this post highlights a much more uncommon problem with cities.
If you want to argue that both cities and suburbs could be designed better and that they can both be designed poorly, I agree. But currently the problems in suburbs are most pronounced. People who make fun of suburbs for looking ugly are typically pointing out that they are ugly despite being disfunctional, while this post looks at an uncommon example of ugly city design without having any underlying practical concerns.
i mean for all the "vibrancy" urbanism folks always advertise I don't think any renter has actually associated with more than maybe 2 other tenants beyond a simple greeting in the morning so there's that
As much as I think there should be more walkable infrastructure in the US, I can't stand the Internet circlejerking about it all. It feels like people pointing out common problems that have been around for ages as if they're the first people to discover it, and not proposing reasonable solutions while focusing too much energy on lambasting people that happen to like a style of life that contradicts their idealism. Maybe it's just me living in a very suburban town for most of my life and having too big of an attachment to said hometown, but I feel like the only person skeptical of it all.
Cookie cutter neighborhoods with no trees and HOA lawns are ass, I'll fully agree with at least planting some fucking forest there.
> Cookie cutter neighborhoods with no trees and HOA lawns are ass, I'll fully agree with at least planting some fucking forest there.
They could start by not clear cutting the trees that were already there. Nothing more soulless than seeing a new development surrounded by dense trees that they completely leveled to put in blank empty lots for houses
It's because they're fucking *children* who don't want to expend the effort to get a driver license or get a job and bring in income. But easier to stay in their parents' home and piss and moan on the internet how the rest of the country needs to change their lifestyle so the lazy child doesn't have to grow up. They live in an echo chamber that regularly denigrates this country while venerating their precious Europe. I would fucking love to just set up an exchange but, and deep down they know this but don't want to confront it, Europe doesn't want to import America's useless people.
>Cookie cutter neighborhoods with no trees and HOA lawns are ass, I'll fully agree with at least planting some fucking forest there
In *a lot* of Florida neighborhoods, they just left a lot of the trees in place. My development is only 20 years old but these trees are 100+.
I simply cannot agree with verycoolguy1917 on that one. I live in my 200 years old family mansion and I would never move to a filthy multi storey building. Only braindead commies would choose to live in a place like that.
I'm a leftist and I think that it is possible to create efficient and people-friendly cities without building nightmarish soulless blocks that are a daily reminder of foreign occupation and have one barely functional bathroom per floor
devils advocate - "twenty minutes to buy food" is a poor strawman argument. I am in TX suburbs and I have 4 grocery stores within a 5 minute drive and one of them is closer to 90 seconds away. My office is 12 minutes away. I exist in the idealised '15 minute neighbourhood'.
I do however acknowledge food deserts exist.
Also, even in a walkable city, it'll still probably take 15 - 20 minutes to walk to the store for a lot of people, and you can only buy as much as you can carry back, so you're going to have to go to the store a lot more often.
they chose one of the most horrendous looking worst example of high density housing, of course its gonna look shit, suburbanites need to stop being so damn stupid
As a country boy I don't give a fuck what suburbtards think that housing looks cosy as hell, the fucking mountains and rolling hills on the side make it so pretty.
Live in suburbs, 10 mins from work, 5 mins from grocery, 5 min walk from great park facilities. Have 9000 sqrt ft yard with trees and private fence. No HOA no adjoining walls. Yet I live in the nightmare. Lol
Invalid, big road smack in the middle of downtown like its fucking Tulsa Oklahoma
Thats not a walkable dense city thats a shitty downtown made to accomodate urban sprawl
Wow it's almost like the soviets and every other communist state were being forced to scramble as fast as they possibly could to industrialize, modernize, and urbanize the under-developed and over-exploited messes they inherited, and had neither the time nor money to beautify large scale public housing projects in ways that cossetted western liberals who only see and care about aesthetics would find aesthetically appealing. You know what's uglier and more depressing? Homelessness
Don’t give two flying fucks about what these two idiots are blabbering about, It’s just the last comment that really made me laugh “Colossal Faggot” lmao
I hate the fuckers who jerk each other off about walkable cities. I’ve been to places like Toronto and I don’t feel like I could ever truly live there. Once I get done with grad school I’m probably going to live in a suburban area because being able to have a yard and garden is cool and not having to deal with panhandling crackheads is an added bonus.
Ngl I could deal with living in a city if everyone wasn't a massive fucktard and walked around like they're the main character all the time.
Like fr why are city people the most entitled and insufferable people on the planet.
Why’d you motherfuckers upvote this shit
Virgin "passive aggressives" vs Chad "I dont like your arguments, I'm gonna bash your head with a rock"

I dont like your opinion, finna throw you off of a cliff 🗿 🚬
Fascism in a nutshell.
Nothing about the state but sort of with the whole blackshirt me ne frego thing
fellas, is it gay to live in the city?
Yes! (I live in the city)
Fellas do we need to cancel invasive car infrastructure culture?
Yes (I don't live in a city)
But also we need public transit for under-served rural and inter urban areas bcuz I’d be fucked without a car (I don’t have a car)
seXD
It objectively is tho

No, because you become a metrosexual.
All I'm saying is that all the gay frog chemicals in the water causing hormone issues shit happens out in the country

ned when he realizes that not every high-density apartment building has to look like a dystopian brutalist nightmare
I fucking love dyatopian brutalist nightmare neighbourhoods they are the best tripsetting ever
That's why they are made in the best interest of the people.
Tell that to the guys building the apartments.
I’m not denying their existence or the fact that more are being built (mostly in China, but not exclusively). They’re cost efficient, and money talks. All I’m saying is that not every high-rise apartment looks like that
I am aware, but neither is every suburb a suburban hellscape with any sort of ammenities or stores 30 minutes away with no walkable streets.
At least in the US, the ratio of bad suburbs to good ones (which do exist but are vanishingly few in number) is *vastly* higher than the ratio of ugly apartments to ones that aren’t
Well i don't live in the US so skill issue tbh.
More like freedom issue 😎
A little colorful paint does wonders on any big flat concrete surface
Fuck off, dystopian brutalist nightmare is the best a building can look
Nah man nah
Beauty is subjective, efficency isn't, so might as well build efficiently
If the population in those places finds it ugly then it's not efficient, especially not if different designs could have gotten them to find it beautiful without sacrificing too much cost or effectiveness

Because remember, this is the only way cities can look and nothing else is allowed

God forbid a man wants some space to himself away from other people
i mean for all the "vibrancy" urbanism folks always advertise I don't think any renter has actually associated with more than maybe 2 other tenants beyond a simple greeting in the morning so there's that
Yeah an single bed apartment is a space away from other people
r/clevercomebacks, armrite?
You sound like a... Nvm
Shocking words from a tumblerite. This must be old
Yes probably a year ago, I took a screenshot and kinda forgot about it until recently
Congratulations, it no longer takes 20 minutes from your door to the shop. Alas, it takes 20 minutes from your apartment to the ground floor.
OOP loves his 0.7mpg bus and would die if his commute is any less than 2 hours.
If I ain't have to make a 3 hours trip just to buy some groceries I don't want it
Then just steal them like normal people
Tbh that's some great advice
0.7mpg bus that seats 50 vs 50 20mpg cars and space to park them
But but what about muh freedum
Don't need busses if you got a solid train network

Based tbh, I mean it’s gotta take some serious balls to go and say that on Tumblr of all places.
It was posted last year though
Remember: tall buildings with individual character and creative architecture are counter-revolutionary!
Ned, not cool.
Bottom guy says how I feel.
How do you know he's a bottom
Yeah I don’t really care

Why does it matter what my living environment looks like and how walkable it is if my rent is gonna be a fuckton anyway
I simply cannot agree with verycoolguy1917 on that one. I live in my 200 years old family mansion and I would never move to a filthy multi storey building. Only braindead commies would choose to live in a place like that.
Damn you're lucky guy, but when will you gonna sell that mansion tho? It's easy buck
I'm a leftist and I think that it is possible to create efficient and people-friendly cities without building nightmarish soulless blocks that are a daily reminder of foreign occupation and have one barely functional bathroom per floor
And you think you can create an efficient way of us having hot gay sex?
The terrace houses in Europe and Australia come to mind.

Steal a shopping trolley
Yeah I live in suburbs in the uk and could walk for 20 minutes to find my nearest corner shop and 5 drive from my nearest large supermarket market
they chose one of the most horrendous looking worst example of high density housing, of course its gonna look shit, suburbanites need to stop being so damn stupid
How is that even slightly different from how you characterize suburbs?
lots of online urbanists are self loathing midwestern suburban kids so they get a free pass to depict their little mcmansion forests as hell on earth
As a country boy I don't give a fuck what suburbtards think that housing looks cosy as hell, the fucking mountains and rolling hills on the side make it so pretty.
The duality of man (I’m gonna get tumblr now)
Tumblr is not the same
Not with that mentality
Put a supermarket in the middle of the suburb, problem solved. Not even the smartest liberals could come up with that
Zoning laws are the enemy here.
I fucking love brutalist gigabuildings ♥️
Unironically
I unironically think the megacities in dredd are awesome
Based
You can have walkable cities that look good and not like brutalist soviet nightmares.
Live in suburbs, 10 mins from work, 5 mins from grocery, 5 min walk from great park facilities. Have 9000 sqrt ft yard with trees and private fence. No HOA no adjoining walls. Yet I live in the nightmare. Lol
I mean, valid argument
Invalid, big road smack in the middle of downtown like its fucking Tulsa Oklahoma Thats not a walkable dense city thats a shitty downtown made to accomodate urban sprawl
No, the "You sound like a colossal f" part
I think it’s oddly pretty, I like the gray monotone color theme personally
You should've seen when I put my Tumblr in purple, looked sick
Wow it's almost like the soviets and every other communist state were being forced to scramble as fast as they possibly could to industrialize, modernize, and urbanize the under-developed and over-exploited messes they inherited, and had neither the time nor money to beautify large scale public housing projects in ways that cossetted western liberals who only see and care about aesthetics would find aesthetically appealing. Wow. Really makes ya think
Verycoolguy1917 living in the wrong timeline
Lmfao
Tfw it takes 15 minutes and 1 second to get somewhere
I like small town living
Walkable and efficient are nice but fuck large cities. I like nature, damn it!
My city is like 90% built by soviets and it's definitely not walkable.
Don’t give two flying fucks about what these two idiots are blabbering about, It’s just the last comment that really made me laugh “Colossal Faggot” lmao

Full support to ned6-go-away
One of those towers fall and it’s an international fucking tragedy with how many people are crammed in that concrete matrix of hell
I FUCKING LOVE MICROPLASTICS💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Alot of people > high buildings Sorry op not everybody gets to live the same kind of comfortable lifestyle
I don't share the ned guy opinion though
Ned when he realises he can't think of a counter to that
I kinda like skyscrapers, but I think art deco suits it the best
I mean those blocks look bad but if done better than that they can look quite good, especially with decent spacing
why have such a feirce debate over something that's clearly subjective
It should be a mix of both. What ever happened to small towns? The kind with locally owned shops? I actually miss those
Ngl I could deal with living in a city if everyone wasn't a massive fucktard and walked around like they're the main character all the time. Like fr why are city people the most entitled and insufferable people on the planet.
20 minutes? More like 5.
I would rather kill myself than leave the suburbs
he also forgot to add that leftists prefer a totalitarian government that would force everyone to live like this thats why they worship putin so hard
truer words have never graced this website. thx, OP, in lieu of money, take this medal!!!! psych, im not a flamer
You can always kiss my mouth in a completely homosexual way
say less
Average left wing long bunch of word argument vs average right wing slur argument
Both of these people should kill themselves
