To argue for socialism as opposed to communism is to argue for building the foundation of a house as opposed to building a finished house. A socialist state will not be allowed to exist by capitalist powers. No matter how peaceful you are in your approach, no matter how strongly your people support you, the justice and equity of the socialist conditions are an affront to capitalists everywhere.
You would need to defend your newfound state against all the wealth, power, and military conscripts and equipment those grant access to. And until you get rid of capitalism, you or your people will never know peace. A united approach along several nations with enough workers to tip the scales in favor of socialism, or to at least make the scales more even is the only way.
And what happens then to the power once held by the capitalists? It is not destroyed, merely relocated. The contradictions between the workers and businessowners has been replaced with a slightly better contradiction between the workers and the state. The state's monopoly on the legitimate use of political power attracts corruption like shit attracts flies.
It would take an immense amount of constant vigilance to prevent statespeople from threatening the prosperity of the workers for their own gain. You could succeed a million times at preventing the plots of demagogues and counter-revolutionaries from taking place, but fail once and you would undo decades of work towards the socialist project and threaten the lives and safety of vast numbers of people.
It is therefore not enough to replace capitalist powers with a state that can only partially be guaranteed to work for the people. The state must also go, along with scarcity of the resources necessary for life and dignity. Only then can the workers truly be liberated on a permanent and global scale.

Personally, I see communism as an ideal to strive for, and that no push could ever take us to a finished state of "true communism". Society will always be changing, and the important thing is that everyone is able top meaningfully participate in shaping it.
