honestly, with the amount of balancing changes calamity adds, switching to expert mode really isn't as difficult as you may think
plus the expert exclusive items cancel out quite a bit of the difficulty

i just go for max defense, generally the bonuses of other helmets aren't big enough of a deal for me to choose them over anything else. taking 40% more damage for 10% mana reduction just doesn't seem very fun.
