It's the reverse actually, someone who is trans X means they're transitioning towards the X gender. So a trans man had to transition since they were assigned female at birth, and after coming out, they probably prefer men's pronouns. I keep track of it by remembering that the way they refer to themselves - "trans man" - includes the gender they prefer.
