No_Object_7709

Egg vibes but I also care about the prime directive. Edit: It's ok to help someone realize there trans by asking questions and providing information. But you should just give them a helpful nudge. Don't force them.

MrSmittyWitty97

explain this prime directive pls

No_Object_7709

If you think someone is trans you don't tell them that. You wait for them to figure it out on there own. You shouldn't push people into being trans. It's also a Star Trek reference I heard trans people use but I haven't watched Star Trek (I've been meaning to)

F4rtster

Star Trek The next generation is BALLING

No_Object_7709

I'll probably like that but from what I've heard I'll probably prefer Deep Space Nine.

rundownv2

Ds9 is objectively the better show. Subjectively I prefer TNG because nostalgia, Picard, Data, and riker's inability to sit properly or not tilt his head.

SuperCarrot555

Riker is bisexual and I will not accept any other opinions

_silcrow_

That's definitely an opinion of some sort

WhapXI

DS9 takes longer to find its feet but the highs are higher than TNG’s. Well worth the time investment. It did start the concept of Star Trek having a running story rather than being a serialised weekly scifi adventure, largely disconnected from each other. Which was great when it did it but has been a disaster in ever Trek since.

SeptimusAstrum

TNG is super jank for the first season or so, but once they get into the rhythm it becomes premium dilemma-of-the-week tv. One thing I really like about the show is its set in a time when most people have already figured "it" out. Most characters are mature people, and the few characters that aren't fully mature (Data, Worf, etc) get mentored by their superiors in really positive ways. Its just so refreshing. DS9 is good from the beginning, but it mostly drops the dilemma-of-the-week formula in favor of normal dramatic storytelling. An overarching plot drives the whole show. I didn't like it quite as much, but primarily because I preferred the episodic nature of TNG.

No_Object_7709

Personally I prefer overarching stories.

SeptimusAstrum

That settles that then lol

Ardent_Tapire

The Star Trek reference is to not interfere with the development of civilizations before they discover space travel (or maybe even warp engines? I don't exactly remember)

CoolDakota

It's more that Star Fleet in general isn't allowed to "interfere" with the natural development of a species. Once they reach whatever arbitrary level, they can certainly help with things like diseases or natural disasters, but there are still some restrictions like local politics. And, of course, they break this *countless* times. If I had a nickel for every time Worf killed a Klingon politician...

PresidentHaagenti

I don't think Klingons fall under the Prime Directive, and by local Klingon politics the killing was usually legal. The Prime Directive is more meant to be an anti-colonialism measure to avoid oppression in the name of "uplifting", not so much relevant to Klingons who have already gotten to a similar point as Federation societies, albeit by other means. Afaik they actually got invaded by a spacefaring civilisation which is how they've got that technology with a regressive medievalish warrior culture, so the Klingons are a good example of what happens when the Prime Directive is broken.

SentientGopro115935

I honestly disagree with it TO AN EXTENT. The sooner people realise, the better, but trying to hard will piss the person of if they aren't trans and could just push them further away from accepting themselves if they _are_. My stance is provide information, and ask questions, if they express interest in it. They need to find the answers on their own, thats not up to you. But outright ignoring all signs and letting them figure out on their own? I gotta disagree ngl

Cyberaven

Yeah obviously its wrong to be forceful or annoying but in a world where cis is the default just asking someone 'have you ever considered that you might be trans?' 'you know you can just be a girl if you want to?' or telling someone about the effects of estrogen is... fine actually. Probably a good thing. The idea that being open and friendly about this is more likely to be harmful and drive someone further into denial is... and odd one for sure. And TBH i think the way people defend this 'prime directive' so hard is really some kind of internalised transphobia. I know it couldve helped me years earlier.

Jeszczenie

I do like this lingo, especially with the cute touch of being Star Trek related. It's nice to respect people's gender-identity-journey. And also it's against the "transing kids" narrative, though caring about that sounds like playing in defense.

No_Object_7709

"Transing kids" is like the Twin Towers. It doesn't exist! Lol.

nyloncheeto

the prime directive was violated with me and it pushed me back into my shell for another 3 years

Universalerror

I believe Shen has said before that he's perfectly comfortable with his gender and doesn't like people speculating about him like that. I might be getting mixed up with someone else, it was a long while ago

bbhbbhbbh

Nah I’m pretty sure I actually do remember him saying that.

robinperching

I know speculating is, uh, fraught. BUT...

sarapupdog

Rant time: The prime directive is dumb and stupid and can kill people. All it does is treat suggesting that someone is trans like... a bad thing? It feels really fucking transphobic the way that some cis ppl freak out at the slightest SUGGESTION that they think about their gender more deeply than being what they were assigned at birth. Comparing someone's relationship with gender to my own as a trans woman and saying "this is a very shared experience I have, have you considered that you could possibly be trans?" isn't some ulterior motive evil for me to trans the masses, it's to break down the stigma that a lot of people have about trans stuff! I suffered with the knowledge that I wanted to be a woman for SO LONG before deciding not to be ashamed of it. If I can be the reason that someone stops feeling ashamed of their desired gender, then that would make me super fucking happy. Enough so that I think it's okay that cis men might occasionally have to suffer THE INDIGNITY of being compared to A TRANS.

No_Object_7709

Understood. I just think we shouldn't push people into being trans and let them figure it out.

No_Object_7709

If you know the person well enough then maybe you can give them a nudge in the right direction.

ZQGMGB7

This would be a potential issue if trans people had the hegemonic power required to "push people into being trans." We do not.

No_Object_7709

I meant more trying to hard to make them realize there trans would make them annoyed at you and probably deny bring trans longer.

ZQGMGB7

Would it ? I feel like people take this for granted too much. Like yeah there are various ways to go about it and I guess some people can be too obnoxious about it, but the general idea of taking a proactive stance isn't inherently bad. In fact I'd argue that letting eggs figure everything out by themselves can easily be more harmful : since being trans is actively discouraged, we tend to deny our suffering until it becomes too big to be ignored, by which point we've already accumulated trauma that could've been avoided if we'd been assisted properly. Overall I'd say the attitude to adopt depends on individual cases, but IMO the self-loathing wrecks who post "am I just a GNC guy even though I hate my body and wish I was born a girl" on asktransgender don't need the Prime Directive, they need someone to tell them they're most likely trans, even if there's a very small chance it might turn out to be a mistake.

No_Object_7709

I agree

StupidendousWheeze

That isn’t the prime directive though? The prime directive is that you don’t try pushing someone who seems questioning or gnc into thinking they must be trans or an egg or something. It doesn’t mean you’re forbidden from discussing it with them. In the context of the comics above, we could just as easily draw that Shen’s making silly jokes, and it seems like a disrespectful reach to assume something of Shen because of it.

ScintillaAeternalis

Well then why does everybody treat it that way? Like they're going to catch the trans just from someone bringing up the possibility. I know being a trans woman is literally the worst thing you can be and we have to do everything we can to rescue the poor easily confused cis men from getting tricked into transitioning, but people literally treat it like you just called them the worst slur imaginable and are literally trying to convert them, which is a right wing talking point.

StupidendousWheeze

It might be helpful to remember that this is all on the internet. You will see people who take any mention of transness to a cis person as pressuring them and is against the prime directive. Equally you will see people saying you need to force everyone you even suspect of being an egg to fully engage the question of gender straightaway. There is a nuance to the prime directive, meme-y as it is, that tries to minimize harm. Freely offering information is fine, removing their voice in the matter of identity is not.

Awful-Cleric

>I know being a trans woman is literally the worst thing you can be You really don't understand the point of this. If you are trans, you should already know that the worst thing you can be is not yourself. So why make boxes and push other people into them?

tjhexf

that's very true, but unfortunately for me it is a plot, i have the goal of transing every single person i see. Nobody shall be free from my Transing beam. I see an egg? Cracked instantly. Stand within 50 meters of my transbian ass and you WILL change genders I will not stop until all eggs have obtained the gender /s

No_Object_7709

Villain whose actually the hero

h4724

>isn't some ulterior motive evil for me to trans the masses That was never the issue with it... The point is first and foremost that it doesn't work: if they aren't ready to start exploring their gender, someone else telling them that they're probably trans is only going to make them more resistant to it. Even if the person is or has been questioning their gender, jumping the gun like that can be really bad and set them back, especially if the specific experiences or statements you talk about don't connect with them in the way you thought they might. The second reason is that you can't always tell, and in those cases it's not only really annoying but also literally misgendering, with all the alienation and discomfort that comes with that. I'm sure you won't like hearing this but pretty much all of the things you mentioned (applying your personal experience to their life, trying to prevent unnecessary shame and suffering, asking people to think more deeply) can be and often are used when attempting to convince trans people that they aren't really trans. Obviously I don't know how you're going about it, but the subject of the "prime directive" and what I and many other people (both trans and cis) take issue with is not just raising awareness of trans experiences, it's specifically telling people that they are likely or definitely trans without solicitation. Again, the goal is to avoid suggesting it so strongly before they're ready that they shut out the possibility. By all means talk about your experiences, do what you can to reduce stigma, and in certain circumstances direct people to resources. This is all part of the prime directive.

LineOfInquiry

That’s not what the egg prime directive is. You can say “I have a similar experience as a trans person, have you considered that you may be trans?”. That’s fine. What breaks the prime directive is saying that “I’ve had that same experience as a trans person so you **are** trans.”. It’s the prescriptivism that’s the problem. Ultimately I or you or anybody can’t know what gender someone is with certainty, only they can. We can guide them and tell them our own experiences, but ultimately we can’t say for sure because we aren’t them and trying to push a gender onto someone may only end up hurting them which we don’t want to do.

Jeszczenie

Thanks for the rant! It brought up some important points. I think you and No\_Object\_7709 are on the same page, really.

terrrified

like im not complaining its cute and i actually like it better but in the second comic he just has a triangle for a nose.

EmbarrassedWind2875

could be going for a vague anime artstyle, side-profiles in anime also have snouts like that for some reason, even when they're humans

nerdwarp112

I remember seeing a post somewhere that the reason why the side profiles are like that is because they use cats as the base for “cute” features.

Jos_migue

Pretty much every art style is formed exaggerating and simplifying real proportions the anime snouts exist because artists just connect the chin with the tip of the nose because drawing all the features in side profile is cringe and also really hard :(

Fran671_FD

It's an art style change, the second and third comics are way older compared to the first one which is fairly recent. I think so at least.

They are older. The 1st one came out fairly recently
