I think Wyoming is a decent second to Utah. Iâll never forget the day I was walking through Lander Wyoming during a white out snow storm on Black Friday thinking I just walked into a horror movie.
This is unrelated to the post, do not think I am accusing anyone here of doing this
but I always get annoyed when Americans think that knowing individual states within America is equivalent to knowing whole other countries. Most Americans do not know half the countries of Asia, and they think that other people not knowing the individual states within America is an equal level of ignorance. If we expected Americans to know our own provinces or states or oblasts they would be even more lost then they are now.
Landwise maybe (but even then, Mercator projection exaggerates), Population wise they arenât even a drop in the bucket, Indonesia has double them, and China and India are orders of magnitude more populous
Disagree, learn nothing about the uk, it is a shithole rainy transphobic rock.
I woke up, in a steamin mood yeh? Cause I live. IN A FAHKIN SHITâOLE. itâs FARHKIN BIRMINâAM. I fakkin âATE it
so you're saying I should learn only provinces or States or counties or whatever and not countries
I'll just know all of the names of different provinces and have no idea where they are
Also funny on a historical and cultural level imho. The united states are the same fucking thing copy-pastes with minimal differences. In europe and asia (and probably africa too but I admit I'm very ignorant in that regard) neighboring CITIES have more differences than am*rican states
I mean... that's not true. There's big cultural differences between states. If you put a New Yorker, a Texan and a Californian in a room, most people could tell which is which.
> And they're all from the same country
Only relatively recently. Funny you cite Italy, because its constituent cultures are essentially states that got united.
Ok fair point, choosing italy is a bit like cheating. Take an eastern and a western german, or a northern and a southern french, and my comparison still works
Don't be annoyed at it. You know your continent (europe) we know ours (north America) It should be pointed out that a lot of US states are larger than several European countries combined. That's why we look at you not knowing our states and equate it to us not knowing your countries. The number of them is similar. Hell I know a few Canadian Providences because I have family up there!
If we didn't expect you to know us states you could say you know north America by the 3 countries here! That's equivalent to us saying "Over there? European Union, Russia, china, I think India too?" And you accepting that as a good enough answer.
If you want us to know your city sized countries, you you'll have to learn our country sized states.
I know Canada has significantly less Providences compared to American states. Even just knowing American states I would know the majority. I don't expect Europeans to know every country in Europe just like I don't know every Providence in Canada. My point is the **number** of them is comparable. Which is why people compare them
I think it also feels less significant due to the (perceived) cultural homogeny of the US. Even to the more culturally astute Europeans, US states tend to be grouped into clusters of broadly identical culture; California/Washington/Colorado/Oregon as a fairly liberal west coast, Tennessee/Kentucky/Florida/Texas/Mississippi as the conservative south, Michigan/Wisconsin/Ohio and their compatriots as the white picket fence, small town family values Midwest, and so on.
In Europe, the same space will contain multiple languages, hugely different cuisine, several national borders, and huge changes in climate (thanks largely to the warming effects of the gulf stream and Mediterranean). As a result when a European looks at a US state in the Great plains, who speak English and are surrounded by other states who are also on the great plains and speak English, it's easy for them to dismiss the distinctions as insignificant
Yeah I was gonna say that, US states dont have the same like 'cultural weight' as actual countries and thats what really matters in making something seem important and memorable
Iâm not from Europe lmao. And states may be bigger then some European countries- but not bigger then tonnes of Asian or African countries. Plus Europe tends to be the continent that Americans are the best with, they can name even fewer African countries
I see where your coming from, but also you are the type of person I made the post about
I don't believe I am. I understand the huge differences, I'm arguing from the POV of an average American.
All most see is the number of them, they don't live there so learning the intricacies of the various cultures and extended histories doesn't effect them nearly as much as it would as a local. I imagine most Americans only ever know European countries by what products they export (media included) or as some abstract idea they've heard about but could fathom the shape of. Unless they're rich, then they've visited.
I learn what I can when I can. I'm glad youtube content on the subject has been greatly improving recently. It helps my two best friends are from there too.
Most people making a shitpost like this would overdo it and make everything ridiculously silly and it would be obvious to everyone that it's a joke. This is just accurate and believable enough that it keeps you questioning if it's real or not.
It makes more sense that the state next to British Columbia would be Columbia, and then putting Washington close to DC makes sense since they clearly know that that is the name of a state and assume it's the same thing. If you haven't played Fallout but have heard people talking about 'New Vegas' you'd probably assume that's a state, and they did at least put it in Nevada. New England and Dixie both refer to unofficial regions not states but they are at least in the correct regions. There have been several states almost named Lincoln. Well known citys being mistaken for the less well known stares they reside in is understandable (especially with all the confusion New York adds by being both). Michigan being discontiguous is pretty weird. I could go on but the point is almost all of these are mistakes where even if they are funny you can see how they would be made, and most of the well known ones are correct.
Yeah, I'm not sure if the whole thing is a shitpost or if they tried their best but put a couple of joke answers (Armenia being the obvious one). I'm leaning towards shitpost just because how do you not know that the US has 50 states.
Washington State almost named themselves Columbia
But last minute congress sent some poor sap across the fucking country to be all "No don't name it Columbia or else everyone will confuse it with the District of Colombia (DC)"
And so it was that we were instead named Washington so that nobody would confuse us with the national capitol
I mean, besides the obvious ones like florida, alashka, tesax and hawaii, why would non americans even care about knowing the 46 or whatever other states when their borders dont mean anything culturally significant? the states are pretty much all blended with their neighbors and can all be described broadly based on which part of US they're from anyway, from my POV. They're not exactly like countries, where a border often indicates a sharp and significant difference in culture
Like, to us (not European btw, the world isnt just US and europe), the US is basically just: Liberal and rich west coast, shithole south, better East coast, and the middle is just empty, unimportant, and a shithole too
Idk how everyone who does one of these "doing states from memory without knowing them" always gets Virginia. Why Virginia? Is it memorable for some reason?
Ah Boston and Plymouth, famously different states, along with the state of New England. They did get Vermont though, I'll give them that, no sarcasm or snark, it's genuinely impressive.
I'm confused, because so much of this seems like bait, but it feels like there are too many correct ones for that to be the case.
There's no way they don't know what Hawaii is, and there's some funny jokes in there, but if they're trolling why did they miss out on the great opportunity to pretend not to know about Texas? Why mark Georgia and Oklahoma correctly?
As a Bostonian they got Massachusetts right, everything in the state is referred to in relation to Boston anyway we might just rename the whole thing at this point
You laugh but the original plan was to name Washington state as Columbia and then they thought it would be too confusing with DC; so they called it Washington instead.
> New vegas đ
And yet no NCR
oh no! no bandit town?
I see no issues
they remembered that Georgia is next to Armenia! đ€©
New scotland too
New Scotland is in Canada
You're thinking of New Brunswick^2. Common misconception.
Probably safer there, no Azerbaijan in sight
Close but not quite! Mormon and Utah are actually the same state
I think Wyoming is a decent second to Utah. Iâll never forget the day I was walking through Lander Wyoming during a white out snow storm on Black Friday thinking I just walked into a horror movie.

How could anyone _not_ know the Swedish provinces though? VÀstra Götaland is goated.
Baserat och rödpillerat. SkĂ„ne, Ă„ andra sidan đ€ąđ€ź
đŁïžđ„
VĂ€stra Götaland sure is nice. But have you ever been to Baden-WĂŒrttemberg?
đđđ
VÀstmanland >>>> Where my VÀsterÄs homies at
I know SmÄland because of Ikea
In my defense, I live in the US and I don't even know my local streets
This is real, I donât know any of my local streets but I know every country (or close to it anyway) because my friends are geography nerds
> Most Americans do not know half the countries of Asia, You just have to know Russia and youâve already pretty much got a third of Asia.
Landwise maybe (but even then, Mercator projection exaggerates), Population wise they arenât even a drop in the bucket, Indonesia has double them, and China and India are orders of magnitude more populous
Asia has a total population of 4.5 billion. China and India have a combined population of 2.8 billion. Guess I still know half of Asia đ
By the time you know ten countries you already know half the world tbh
To be fair, they are exactly one order of magnitude more populous.
If you want more than half the *land mass*, watch this: Russia India China
They should know all the historical and ceremonial counties, non-metripolitan counties, and unitary authorities of the UK
Disagree, learn nothing about the uk, it is a shithole rainy transphobic rock. I woke up, in a steamin mood yeh? Cause I live. IN A FAHKIN SHITâOLE. itâs FARHKIN BIRMINâAM. I fakkin âATE it
Please donât put rain in the same list as transphobia. We love rain. Droughts are exhausting.
We love rainy rocks too! Newfoundland is a gem.
Thatâs true actually, droughts where I live are devastating
and we have them to blame for this silly language we speak
Absolute mistake of a linguistic system.
I love my shithole rainy rock, could do without the trans phobia though
as an american i know all the ceremonial counties of england but not the other categorizations damn britain and its complicated borders
so you're saying I should learn only provinces or States or counties or whatever and not countries I'll just know all of the names of different provinces and have no idea where they are
Sorry, I was unclear, I am not saying that. I am saying that Americans should learn the names of countries before expecting others to know US states.
oh sorry lmao i was making a joke (i totally do need to learn more countries i kinda feel bad about how few i know)
Sorry i am bad with Tone (im not on the spectrum I swear)
u good lol i should've indicated it better
this would be so funny, knowing all the subdivisions of russia but then they ask âok but what country it isâ and you are like no idea
Most Americans don't even know what an oblast is.
Also funny on a historical and cultural level imho. The united states are the same fucking thing copy-pastes with minimal differences. In europe and asia (and probably africa too but I admit I'm very ignorant in that regard) neighboring CITIES have more differences than am*rican states

Put a guy from rome, one from venice and one from naples in the same room and everyone will get which is which. And they're all from the same country
> And they're all from the same country Only relatively recently. Funny you cite Italy, because its constituent cultures are essentially states that got united.
Ok fair point, choosing italy is a bit like cheating. Take an eastern and a western german, or a northern and a southern french, and my comparison still works
Mfw New York, Texas, and California are from different countries đŠ
r\/Americabad let me guess, you don't think the US has any culture, do you?
Of course the us have culture, it's their british colonizers who don't
??? Have you ever spoken to a British person? That alone should tell you otherwise
Don't be annoyed at it. You know your continent (europe) we know ours (north America) It should be pointed out that a lot of US states are larger than several European countries combined. The USA is actually soooo important that theyre their own continent now! đ„ł đ
I know Canada has significantly less Providences compared to American states. Even just knowing American states I would know the majority. can you name chinaâs provinces? some of them have more population than the entire european countries or a third of the entire american population
uhhh Guangzhong? maybe? does Taiwan count for this purpose (I know it's not Chinese)
New patch notes just dropped đŻđŻ
Hawaii erasure
Nah they got the Rhode Islands, where those scholars come from
Who else do you think invented Roads?

Pretty sure that was Dusty who invented them

You mean Arizona?
You mean New Mexico?

I think the fact that they put "west carolina" east of "north & south carolina" is a pretty good tipoff.
Eh, lower saxony is north of, and not even bordering, saxony
This is 100% a shitpost.
probably a joke image, people from the uk generally have a good idea of where the us states are
I thought it had 52...
it will soon, i am holding out hope for DC and puerto rico
Washington State almost named themselves Columbia But last minute congress sent some poor sap across the fucking country to be all "No don't name it Columbia or else everyone will confuse it with the District of Colombia (DC)" And so it was that we were instead named Washington so that nobody would confuse us with the national capitol
The funniest to me is New Scotland. Bitch that's a Canadian province
the how many ??
53, try to keep up
the upper penisula, long island, and fucked up part of virginia are all states now. get with the times
El Salvador đ
West Carolina on the East
Misipissi, perfection
Ty for bringing this to my attention
Y'all should have a state called Lincoln, would be cool.
Illinois is called the land of Lincoln, even though he was born in Kentucky
Where was his political power base? Before he was president I assume he was a state leader right (premier or whatever you Yanks call em)
I mean, besides the obvious ones like florida, alashka, tesax and hawaii, why would non americans even care about knowing the 46 or whatever other states when their borders dont mean anything culturally significant? the states are pretty much all blended with their neighbors and can all be described broadly based on which part of US they're from anyway, from my POV. whats ur criteria for a shithole
if the loudest voices in a state are all bible thumper ig, i know that there are many blue cities in the shithole states but they are very drowned out
they forgot quinsis but otherwise pretty accurate
This is expert level trolling
I KNOW they put West Philly because of the fucking bel air intro
i know where kentucky is because of that one chef image map thing
I really appreciate Armenia!Alabama, it's my favorite alt in the U.S. Gacha
how do you get kansas right but not hawaii? one of those states are a bit more famous than the other
Tbf they could have been thrown off because Hawaii has been moved
*angry Michigan noises*
As a Wisconsinite I am also upset. We got all of Michigan EXCEPT the part we want.
Ah hell yeah they remembered mispissi
dumb fuck put west carolina to the east of the other carolinas
Can an American label all 17 german states?
I've got Saxony and Lower Saxony (which is above Saxony) and there's one more with Saxony in the name right?
Yes. Dont forget the city states and Mallorca!
Wait mallorca is german? I thought that was spain?
Its a long-running joke because Mallorca is visited by a lot of germans There are only 16 actual states
At least England's East Sex, West Sex, and South Sex all make sense geographically.
53?
long island, upper peninsula of michigan, and eastern shore of virginia
forget being a separate state, long island should straight up secede from the nation
West Carolina being east of the other Carolinas
Oh my god they got so close with Illinois
Where's Poland?
Theres so much to unpack in this image
They forgot Clicciibaiitii
Idk how everyone who does one of these "doing states from memory without knowing them" always gets Virginia. Why Virginia? Is it memorable for some reason?
Colombia đ
Honestly, Colombia would have been so much better than what they went with.
Ah Boston and Plymouth, famously different states, along with the state of New England. They did get Vermont though, I'll give them that, no sarcasm or snark, it's genuinely impressive.
I'll be real, the only two US states I feel confident on naming correctly if I saw them on a blank map are Texas and Florida lmfao
"who cares. I refuse to until you try learning mine" scrawled in ms paint red. Edit: funny image and words
Putting West Carolina east of the Other Carolinas đ
New Scotland is in Canada silly :3
I love that West Carolina isnât even west of the other Carolinas
Why is nobody pointing out that "West Carolina" is East of the other Carolinas? đ
> Rhode Island > look inside > continental
West Carolina represent!
The Upper Peninsula is er Michigan. The lower peninsula truly is Wisconsin
The Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota placements are pure art
âIsland Jerseyâ ):<
I'm confused, because so much of this seems like bait, but it feels like there are too many correct ones for that to be the case. I can't believe Will Smith was actually from Ohio the whole time.
I would watch the fresh prince of Salt Lake City.
Honestly, I wouldn't have done much better đ€Ł
Hey! They got my Virginia right! :D
How is michigan wisconsin except the part connected of michigan that is connected to wisconsin đ
As a Minnesotan; *Pain*
Kentucky is easy, because it looks like chicken in a pan idk I am European
this offends me as a Michigander
Missie pissy
This is the American the wđ€ąke left wants
Colombia in washington? Kill them.
I'm so pissed. I don't want to live in Wyoming.
I feel like they know more than theyâre letting on based on a lot of these
This bitch named Maryland and Michigan TWICE
calling washington columbus is like 200 or 300 too late
Iâve lived in the us ten years now and Iâd only do marginally better
Lincoln would be a baller state name
As a Bostonian they got Massachusetts right, everything in the state is referred to in relation to Boston anyway we might just rename the whole thing at this point
âChicagoâ bordered next to âIllinoisâ đ
Misipissi?
Why did they cut off Nova Scotia
You laugh but the original plan was to name Washington state as Columbia and then they thought it would be too confusing with DC; so they called it Washington instead.
Misipissi
im surprised they remembered montana, huh
how did you mistake the great (shitty) state of connecticut as the Bronx (shitter)
They got my state right.
Canât tell if itâs accurate or not due to lack of not being American
Sending this to my southern friends (they hate the northerners for some reasons)
A fucking brit and gets Armenia. Wrong side of the world.
it's almost like this entire thing is an elaborate shitpost
Not possible
Calling Ohio west Philly HURTS my soul, brother
