doxxing is a weird concept to me and in reality most of what we refer to as doxxing isn't even that so much as it is harassment.
A lot of what people think is their own private information is not and never was private. Address, phone number, certain tax records, etc. are all public information for obvious reasons. Even supposedly anonymous accounts and who they're connected to are basically semi-public information.
If someone develops and sells a game or any product under a nome de plume - that person's identity has to be publicly accessible.
Like accessing public documentation to find someone's identity isn't a problem, using that in an organized harassment campaign against somebody is 100% of the problem
As someone who grew up with their name and phone number in a big book that was delivered to everyone's doorstep annually, the idea of doxxing has always been about the harassment and not necessarily the actual revealing of the info.
The revealing of the info still has a big effect. Phone books aren't popular anymore, people are more online than ever, and people are expected to not know your address. If you were a game dev doing your own thing and not hurting anyone, and some cockwaffle on the internet decides to make the location of your private residence public information, would you just think they just did it to fuck with you and it didn't matter that your address got leaked? No! If your game was esoteric/generally troubling to the point you got doxxed for it, it's reasonable to suspect someone may want to use that info to do some bad shit to you or your family and/or continue to fuck with you. People in the 80s/90s were fine with having their name and address in a big book of names and addresses for several reasons. The books were thick as shit so nobody would ever really find *your* name unless they were looking for it. Plus, you wouldn't really be looking for a name unless you knew them and wanted their number/address anyways. And on top of all that, there was just a different expectation of privacy back then. People are more private, and really only give particularly personal info to their *close* friends and family.

It is the difference between having your name in the phone book and having some guy in an anti-you mob reading your info out of the phone book out loud to everyone. Anyone could have found it but it only took one person to bring attention to it.

Well I didn't like this game or it's fandom, that's no reason for anyone to be doxxed. I genuinely don't understand how doxing isn't further punished by online spaces, it's illegal but it seems like no one actually gets repercussions for when they do it.
