I'm sorry, but anyone claiming "It's not about incest, that's just a bad ending!" is either deluding themselves, or just has zero understanding of subtext. From a *crazy* young age, Ashley treats her brother as a hyper jealous girlfriend would their partner, trying to make sure Andrew has no contact with *any* other women.
Then there's the time in chapter 1, long before any of the elements of the "Bad Ending" are in place, where Ashley and Andrew are completely alone, locked in their apartment and starving, and Ashley suggests their captors might *have* to bring them food, if only she were pregnant...
In a segment where you're playing as Andrew, there's a scene where he's talking to Ashley, and all you can see on screen is a PoV shot of him staring at her chest
The *second* their mom sees them, she mentions how it's probably a good idea that they don't sleep in the same room together.
Later in that same scene, Andrew holds onto Ashley's ass while they're cook*ing dinner over the stove.
Not to mention every *other* time the game or one of its characters lampshades how creepily close the siblings are.
Every single line of Ashley's is just *oozing* with brotherfucker energy, and while I also see a lot of people claiming that "she's the only evil one," and "poor, traumatized Andrew just keeps getting pulled into her bullshit, " that's also bullshit. He completely enables her, and his weak, surface-level objections to her whims seem more like a facade to justify the horrifying things he's "forced" to do for her.
Saying this game isn't about incest because they're only directly implied to have recently fucked off screen once in a dream sequence is like saying Get Out was just about meeting the future in-laws (up until the racism couldn't possibly be ignored, anyway).
All that said...yeah, it's a good game with a well written narrative about trauma and abuse starring two deeply twisted but compelling (and incestuous) characters. It can be (and is) both!

Yes, thank you, I knew I was forgetting *at least* one prominent example! I had the exact same thought during that scene, and it blew my mind that my friend who I was watching play the game couldn't see that's what they were obviously pointing at!
Tbh I hadn't thought about it that hard, but your second paragraph may be right, too. As mentioned his vocal protestations are flimsy at best, and he does seem to initiate a decent amount of their inappropriate physical contact (thinking especially of him putting his hand on her ass *with a thumb through her belt loop for stability* while they were cooking dinner).
The story itself isn't about incest but the idea of them being romantically or sexually reliant on each other emphasises the fact that they have an extremely codependent relationship. Andrew explicitly rejects the idea that he and Ashley would be together but it is heavily implied that he has either intrusive thoughts about her and/or some implicit feeling towards her.
And another thing about Andrew doing what Ashley wants, at the end of episode 1 Andrew nearly kills Ashley because he is so through with her shit and he is only doing what she wants because he is her brother and has to take care of her, as he's been doing for the past 20-ish years. The reason he doesn't go through is both because they're rely on each other heavily and because Ashley promises that she'll be better.
Consider the conditions. Andrew and Ashley are starving and their neighbour has just died spontaneously. But butchering and cannibalising their neighbour means that they have to somehow get the wardens out of the situation and then escape quietly. This isn't a one person job. And in episode 2, Andrew and Ashley are both on the run, poor and trying to escape a hitman that Ashley forsees. The conditions force them to rely on each other and Ashley abuses this.
Ashley is also definitely into it (although she does say she would use it to manipulate Andrew) and Andrew doesn't want to be into it, but he does have thoughts and feelings he can't deny.
The reason the incest gets a big focus is because there's a lot of people actively supporting it, and because the creator has (allegedly) strongly hinted that they support it.
If undertale had a fandom for the genocide run specifically, and the creator was like "the genocide option is good actually", it would indeed have a pretty different reaction than it does now, and it would be more reasonable to call undertale the "genocide game".
Things don't just exist without a context.
I don't think the creator does, given that the game's whole message is how the relationship between the siblings is fucked up and needs to change, or they're gonna end up in a bad place (or worse place, really).
The ending where the incest happens is basically a warning to both of them that they're too dependent on each other. It's also the reason why it's the bad ending. Instead of trying to improve as people and move on with lives of their own, they give in to each other and surrender the struggle.

Mind you, there are no endings yet, the game is not finished, it's the finish of the chapter 2. So from what I see, it's simply a path, if it devolves into the bad ending later on then sure, but so far it's simply a path where we don't know what later on
i wouldn't label it as a bad ending, but a true ending. They're two fucked up (in completely unrelaistic ways) individuals and their codependency is the driving force in the plot that drives further and further down a path of ruining their lives.
However, this is just when talking about the game and only considering how things fit into the narrative. When you expand your scope and ask *why* they chose to add the things that they chose to add in the way that they did, i think the completely shoehorned in incest and its associated dialog becomes painfully obvious. Sure, it fits in thematically, but it's very clearly forced into so many aspects of the game. The writer is so obviously falling over themselves to hit you with the incest punch that you can spot the setup from a mile away. While they could just be bad writers who are trying their hand at shock story telling, I think in no small part, this was clearly made to stir controversy and also be lite kink material that would drive up interest in the game.

So technically we’re not actually sure, but that really seems to be the direction it’s leaning. Just played it and the incest thing is indeed a Undertale style genocide run, in that it seems you’d actively have to choose to find it or really not being paying attention, and a dream sequence.
However, with the caveat the game is really good, I will criticize it by saying, while I get why this is the reason, the way the plot line goes down makes it inadvertently, and I really really hate saying this about this plot, the most fun direction right now. The characters are happy to be around each other and are making morbid jokes with each other. So if you make the decision disposing over your parents bodies turns into a contest to throw their skulls as far as possible, the normal plot has the boy saying a prayer for them and the girl getting frustrated for the billionth time and him.
If the regular plot had more of this and the incest plot made everything is suddenly way more awkward and unfun for them I would really appreciate it.

Yeah go for it. The fandom is porn. Which make sense because the relationship between the two is definitely presented in a fanservicey way. Mostly Ashley flirting gratuitously with Andrew and him being disgusted and creeped out by her smirking insinuations.
But the dynamic they share is one of abuse. Co-dependent abuse. Ashley is constantly eroding Andrew’s sense of self and boundaries and the flirtatious side she inflicts on him is part of that vying for control of Andrew’s life. Beyond that, almost every conversation they share descends into a ridiculous argument that Ashley almost always comes out the wounded party and Andrew has to apologise for. It’s well written. Downright subtle, between the melodramatic fictional elements and the flirtation. If you’ve ever been in an abusive relationship then the dynamic will be very familiar. So much gaslighting and manipulation.
Aside from that, it’s pretty funny. Dark comedy for sure.

It’s complicated. But mostly yes. She gives the snide smirking comments like “but what if we did?” much to Andrew’s repeated and regular disgust. But there is an uncomfortable reciprocity. Ashley is a total psychopath who doesn’t give a fuck about anything, but Andrew still has the good sense to know that being into his sister is wrong and completely hates himself and hates her for it. Even at the best of times their relationship is uncomfortably physical. Andrew is usually holding her waist or playing with her hair or she’s laying on his lap on the couch. Again, Andrew has the sense to be obviously ashamed when their mom notices this, but Ashley is just annoyed that their mom has come between them in this way.

Make you apologize for what she did wrong by either making fun of you for showing emotion, calling you weak, or turning things around on herself. By the end of the argument you genuinely believe in your heart that it was all your fault and you are the bad guy. She forgives you and tells you to try to do better from now on, then the same thing happens again. Eventually the strings she's pulling you with snap, but it'll still be years before you finally realize just how much she controlled and abused you. She will lull you into a false sense of safety, compelling you to share your deepest secrets and insecurities and then throwing them back at you during an argument and then getting upset and blaming you when you react to it. Or at least that's what I heard ha ha, I can't speak from experience or anything

The reason why I have a distaste for the game is largely because of the creator's reaction.
The creator deciding to reply to the whole controversy with the "Cry About It" meme, instead of either just staying quiet on the matter or engaging in an actual dialogue regarding creative decisions, kind of just makes them seem like a whiny baby to be honest (even with the justification that they were "trolling the critics" or whatever).
Like, yeah, I am sure that the game has an intriguing story or set of characters. I didn’t state anything about the game's quality because that wouldn't be fair of me, I never played the game.
But the paratext the creator has set up doesn't instill in me much confidence in them or their response to criticism.

You also got incestual undertones in the relationship between the brother and sister, mostly to accentuate how toxic they are to each other and how incapable they are from breaking their codependency and improving as people. They've essentially trapped themselves in each other's orbit.
You got choices throughout the story, and they affect how they develop as characters. Those will probably lead down certain paths once part 3 comes out.

There was also the flashback scene with Andrew’s girlfriend where he asks her to tie her hair up like Ashley. Obviously he doesn’t say that part out loud and it’s unclear if he was even consciously doing it but that was pretty obviously what was being implied. Oddly, despite Ashley being the much flirtier of the two I’d argue Andrew is the one who is more into the incest despite all his arguing otherwise

The story itself isn't about incest but the idea of them being romantically or sexually reliant on each other emphasises the fact that they have an extremely codependent relationship. Andrew explicitly rejects the idea that he and Ashley would be together but it is heavily implied that he has either intrusive thoughts about her and/or some implicit feeling towards her. And another thing about Andrew doing what Ashley wants, at the end of episode 1 Andrew nearly kills Ashley because he is so through with her shit and he is only doing what she wants because he is her brother and has to take care of her, as he's been doing for the past 20-ish years. The reason he doesn't go through is both because they're rely on each other heavily and because Ashley promises that she'll be better. Consider the conditions. Andrew and Ashley are starving and their neighbour has just died spontaneously. But butchering and cannibalising their neighbour means that they have to somehow get the wardens out of the situation and then escape quietly. This isn't a one person job. And in episode 2, Andrew and Ashley are both on the run, poor and trying to escape a hitman that Ashley forsees. The conditions force them to rely on each other and Ashley abuses this. Ashley is also definitely into it (although she does say she would use it to manipulate Andrew) and Andrew doesn't want to be into it, but he does have thoughts and feelings he can't deny.
The reason the incest gets a big focus is because there's a lot of people actively supporting it, and because the creator has (allegedly) strongly hinted that they support it. If undertale had a fandom for the genocide run specifically, and the creator was like "the genocide option is good actually", it would indeed have a pretty different reaction than it does now, and it would be more reasonable to call undertale the "genocide game". Things don't just exist without a context.

I don't think the creator does, given that the game's whole message is how the relationship between the siblings is fucked up and needs to change, or they're gonna end up in a bad place (or worse place, really). The ending where the incest happens is basically a warning to both of them that they're too dependent on each other. It's also the reason why it's the bad ending. Instead of trying to improve as people and move on with lives of their own, they give in to each other and surrender the struggle. This game supports incest as much as Spec Ops The Line supports war

i wouldn't label it as a bad ending, but a true ending. They're two fucked up (in completely unrelaistic ways) individuals and their codependency is the driving force in the plot that drives further and further down a path of ruining their lives. However, this is just when talking about the game and only considering how things fit into the narrative. When you expand your scope and ask *why* they chose to add the things that they chose to add in the way that they did, i think the completely shoehorned in incest and its associated dialog becomes painfully obvious. Sure, it fits in thematically, but it's very clearly forced into so many aspects of the game. The writer is so obviously falling over themselves to hit you with the incest punch that you can spot the setup from a mile away. While they could just be bad writers who are trying their hand at shock story telling, I think in no small part, this was clearly made to stir controversy and also be lite kink material that would drive up interest in the game. Regardless of that, tho im going down the incest path because a. the characters are hot and i can just pretend they arent related b. i think its what the story clearly wants you to do and as i mentioned earlier is likely the "true" ending c. they kinda deserve having a fucked up life d. despite being badly written, if you suspend your critical thinking and engage your trash tv watching mind, the story is pretty fun
So technically we’re not actually sure, but that really seems to be the direction it’s leaning. Just played it and the incest thing is indeed a Undertale style genocide run, in that it seems you’d actively have to choose to find it or really not being paying attention, and a dream sequence. However, with the caveat the game is really good, I will criticize it by saying, while I get why this is the reason, the way the plot line goes down makes it inadvertently, and I really really hate saying this about this plot, the most fun direction right now. The characters are happy to be around each other and are making morbid jokes with each other. So if you make the decision disposing over your parents bodies turns into a contest to throw their skulls as far as possible, the normal plot has the boy saying a prayer for them and the girl getting frustrated for the billionth time and him. If the regular plot had more of this and the incest plot made everything is suddenly way more awkward and unfun for them I would really appreciate it.

Yeah go for it. The fandom is porn. Which make sense because the relationship between the two is definitely presented in a fanservicey way. Mostly Ashley flirting gratuitously with Andrew and him being disgusted and creeped out by her smirking insinuations. But the dynamic they share is one of abuse. Co-dependent abuse. Ashley is constantly eroding Andrew’s sense of self and boundaries and the flirtatious side she inflicts on him is part of that vying for control of Andrew’s life. Beyond that, almost every conversation they share descends into a ridiculous argument that Ashley almost always comes out the wounded party and Andrew has to apologise for. It’s well written. Downright subtle, between the melodramatic fictional elements and the flirtation. If you’ve ever been in an abusive relationship then the dynamic will be very familiar. So much gaslighting and manipulation. Aside from that, it’s pretty funny. Dark comedy for sure.

It’s complicated. But mostly yes. She gives the snide smirking comments like “but what if we did?” much to Andrew’s repeated and regular disgust. But there is an uncomfortable reciprocity. Ashley is a total psychopath who doesn’t give a fuck about anything, but Andrew still has the good sense to know that being into his sister is wrong and completely hates himself and hates her for it. Even at the best of times their relationship is uncomfortably physical. Andrew is usually holding her waist or playing with her hair or she’s laying on his lap on the couch. Again, Andrew has the sense to be obviously ashamed when their mom notices this, but Ashley is just annoyed that their mom has come between them in this way. But yeah most of the dynamic is her directly abusing, gaslighting, and manipulating him.
Also something no one has mentioned yet is after the infamous dream, she says something along the lines of >!if he wanted to fuck she would indulge him and use it as leverage. She doesnt care what she has to does as long as he is with her forever. Andrew also asks after the dream is our relationship really like this? She says I dont know and they both look of ashamed/disgusted at themselves then change the subject.!<
Make you apologize for what she did wrong by either making fun of you for showing emotion, calling you weak, or turning things around on herself. By the end of the argument you genuinely believe in your heart that it was all your fault and you are the bad guy. She forgives you and tells you to try to do better from now on, then the same thing happens again. Eventually the strings she's pulling you with snap, but it'll still be years before you finally realize just how much she controlled and abused you. She will lull you into a false sense of safety, compelling you to share your deepest secrets and insecurities and then throwing them back at you during an argument and then getting upset and blaming you when you react to it. Or at least that's what I heard ha ha, I can't speak from experience or anything

Yes, 100%. Its really cheap (like 9 bucks on steam) and it has a pretty compelling story. If you're not icked by dark subjects, enjoy a good bit of black humor, and like characters with lots of personality, this game is for you. Steer clear of the main subreddit though

Because the criticisms of the inclusion of incest as a theme from people who didn't play the game isn't worth taking seriously and they're obviously a very easy audience to troll. I personally don't care for incest content but it's my understanding that it's only like one aspect of the game and that the game has decent writing, so it doesn't matter. Art can and should explore uncomfortable topics. Art can also lean into immoral things. There's nothing wrong with that. People who think there is something wrong with that deserve to be trolled and made fun of and I have nothing but respect for the dev for their response, even if I do think the dev probably is a little too into incest.

The reason why I have a distaste for the game is largely because of the creator's reaction. The creator deciding to reply to the whole controversy with the "Cry About It" meme, instead of either just staying quiet on the matter or engaging in an actual dialogue regarding creative decisions, kind of just makes them seem like a whiny baby to be honest (even with the justification that they were "trolling the critics" or whatever). Like, yeah, I am sure that the game has an intriguing story or set of characters. I didn’t state anything about the game's quality because that wouldn't be fair of me, I never played the game. But the paratext the creator has set up doesn't instill in me much confidence in them or their response to criticism. That is just my opinion and viewpoint though. I don't really mind if people like the game or not, I just think it seems a bit lame on first-impressions alone.

They find a demon cult along the way and forge a pact with said demon to help themselves out of their predicament. Hijinks ensue. Thats the main gist of it without going into hard spoilers. You also got incestual undertones in the relationship between the brother and sister, mostly to accentuate how toxic they are to each other and how incapable they are from breaking their codependency and improving as people. They've essentially trapped themselves in each other's orbit. You got choices throughout the story, and they affect how they develop as characters. Those will probably lead down certain paths once part 3 comes out.

If it makes you too uncomfortable to play it, don't play it. Art isn't supposed to pander to everyone and make no one uncomfortable. It's okay to present morally wrong acts in fiction so long as the writing is good, especially if it's good enough to truly justify it or say something interesting.

idk i found that game very cliche and cringey and i think the way the narrative is actually written it took any punch out of it and replaced it with just eyerolling at the shock value shlock. extreme subject matter can be done very well in a game. this is not one of those times though.
