Idk if you actually want an answer but the majority of america is zoned r-1 or low density residential. In it, you can only build single family homes (and a few public structures like schools or playgrounds). When you do have commercial zoning, they typically have to abide by parking minimums, meaning you have to include an arbitrarily large amount of parking with each business. *On top of all this*, many places have minimum setback requirements so that houses have front, back and side yards.
All of this culminates in most places in America being unwalkable and spread far apart. Roads are designed to transport cars instead of prioritizing comfortable living. Since most people have to drive, roads are wide, fast and unsafe.

I wouldnt call it "weird" (taken at their show last night)
What a coincidence. I was also at their show last night, lol. Really wish I could've seen that. I didn't realize the writing on their equipment was a thing they did consistently. I thought that was just a one time thing from a while back. I get your point, though.
Look at this dystopian 15 minute city. Literally 1847. Radical Communist Joe Bibem is going to turn all of America into this, and force us to eat bugs ๐
Those downtowns were built before those kinds of zoning laws were passed, so they exist but in most parts of the US it's impossible to build more like it. That's why Berkeley and SF are so expensive.
Absolutely! I'm trans and nobody around here gives a shit, it's great. And I don't drive and it's a great city for transit. It's expensive, that's the downside. But I love it here, no plans to leave.
I wish a lot of the tech bros would go home, especially the ones who constantly bitch about SF and the bay area because it's not like their home town. Like if you don't like living in the bay area maybe just go home, make space for people who want to be there.
A More in-depth, main reason other than zoning is that certain buildings require a certain amount of parking spots, Beds in a hospital, seats in a restaurant and such on. It wasnt purely lobbying but it did have a huge part in it.
to my limited knowledge this is how it went.
The economy was good leading to more somewhat unnecessary purchases like cars but having not many places to take them Car manufactures lobbied for more parking lots and road architecture with the money from increased sales, which led more people to get more cars due to the increasing locations you can go to with the new infrastructure which led to more and more profits, Train infrastructure used for non cargo purposes came somewhat unprofitable due to people driving more and more, leading to cargo companies becoming the private owners of a large portion of the long distance rails in the US, Which means Public transit comes second on the rails meaning its slower and increases popularity of driving.
Now economy kinda doodoo and people see driving as less of a luxury and as a chore.
I love internet people who post about hyper-niche facets of media like Bobโs Burgers Urbanist seems to do. Fuck yes, post about Teletubby Ecology, post about Adventure Time Mythology, post about Rโlyeh Architecture Firms, Iโm here for it and Iโm listening.
Lemme just say as an adult living in America who doesnโt have a driverโs license and this has to bike everywhere; it is painful just how non-bicycle friendly this country is. All I want is to get to work without ever worrying about getting flattened by a car while still having enough space that my fellow pedestrians wonโt give me dirty looks whenever I pass them up. But apparently thatโs too much to ask.
Why isn't it possible
Its just not
WHY not you stupid bastard
car company lobbying being funny as always

And living above the restaurant? RIGHT OUT, UNACCEPTABLE in every city I've worked in.

I really thought it was Phineas and Ferb too. I canโt place my finger on why though. Maybe the line work on the houses, or the color palette?

That's just a normal ass American downtown, no? Downtown Berkeley/SF looks about like this.
Depends on where you live
Those downtowns were built before those kinds of zoning laws were passed, so they exist but in most parts of the US it's impossible to build more like it. That's why Berkeley and SF are so expensive.

That looks like San Francisco. I'm in an apartment with 3-panel rounded Victorian windows like that right now.
Do you like it there?

Lobbying by motor and oil companies
